WritingReading ComprehensionA greenhouse is a building made of glass which is used for keeping plants warm when the outside temperature is low. In a similar way there are several gases in the atmosphere which trap the heat produced by the sun and prevent it from escaping. These gases are known as “greenhouse gases”, and the way in which they trap heat in the atmosphere is called the “greenhouse effect”. This is not simply air pollution. Most of the main greenhouse gases exist naturally in small amounts in our atmosphere, and without them the earth would be 30 degrees colder and human life would not exist. In other words, the greenhouse effect is a natural course which is to some degree helpful to us. The problem is that in the last century and a half, we have been putting too many of these gases into the earth’s atmosphere by burning large quantities of coal and oil and by cutting down forests. The rapid increase in the greenhouse gases is making the world warmer. The world’s temperature has already gone up by half a degree this century, and the sea level has risen by 10 centimeters. If the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere doubles there will be a rise in the earth’s temperature of between 1 and 4. This may seem a small increase, but it would be enough to cause major changes in geography and agriculture. Large areas of the world would be flooded, and some areas would become dry and unable to produce crops. It is important, too, to consider that there may be a delay of about 30 years in the greenhouse effect. This means that we are probably experiencing only now the effect of the gases put into the atmosphere before the 1960s. Since then, these gases have greatly increased.1.“Greenhouse effect” means______.A.the way in which gases are used for keeping plants warmB.natural course which is to some degree helpful to usC.The way “greenhouse gases” trap heat on the earthD.The whole course in which greenhouse gases prevent heat正确答案:C解析:根据第一段第四行the way in which they trap heat in the atmosphere is called the“greenhouse effect”,可知“温室效应”是指把热量保留在大气的行为,故选C。

It found that human-influenced climate change was raising the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition (营养不良)and heal-related health problems. But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions. Along with the deaths, the report said that the lives of 325 million people, primarily in poor countries, were being seriously affected by climate change. It projected that the number would double by 2030.Roger Pielke Jr. a political scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum's report was “a methodological embarrassment” because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic losses4related to human-driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting from the growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable (易受伤害的)region s. Dr. Pielke said that “climate change is an important problem requiring our utmost attent ion. “But the report, he said, ''will harm the cause for action on both climate change and disasters because it is so deeply flawed (有瑕疵的).”However, Soren Andreasen, a social scientist at Dalberg Global Development Partners who supervised the writing of the report, defended it, saying that it was clear that the numbers were rough estimates. He said the report was aimed at world leaders, who will meet in Copenhagen in December to negotiate a new international climate treaty. In a press release describing the report, Mr. Annan stressed the need for the negotiations to focus on increasing the flow of money from rich to poor regions to help reduce their vulnerability to climate hazards while still curbing the emissions of the heat-trapping gases. More than 90% of the human and economic losses from climate change arc occurring in poor countries, according to the report.36. What is the finding of the Global Humanitarian Forum?A. 江西省专升本英语模拟试题

2020年江西省“专升本”英语统一考试模拟试卷一PartⅠListening comprehension(10points)(略)PartⅡReading Comprehension(40points)Directions:In this section there are four passages. Each of them is followed by some questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A),B),C),and D).You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Questions16-20are based on the following passage. There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with.Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with,an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual—the sort of environment in which he is brought up.If an individual is handicapped(不利)environmentally,it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable. The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins,Peter and Mark.Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster(抚养)homes.Peter was raised by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence.Mark's I.Q.was125,twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother.Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.16.This selection can best be titled____________.A.Measuring Your IntelligenceB.Intelligence and EnvironmentC.The Case of Peter and MarkD.How the Brain Influences Intelligence17.The best statement of the main idea of this passage is that_______.A.human brains differ considerablyB.the brain a person is born with is important in determining his intelligenceC.environment is crucial in determining a person's intelligenceD.persons having identical brains will have roughly the same intelligence18.According to the passage, the average I.Q.is___.A.85.B.100C.110D.12519.The case history of the twins appears to support the conclusion that_______.A.individuals with identical brains seldom test at the same levelB.an individual's intelligence is determined only by his environmentck of opportunity blocks the growth of intelligenceD.changes of environment produce changes in the structure of the brain20.This passage suggests that an individual's I.Q.____.A.can be predicted at birthB.stays the same throughout his lifeC.can be increased by educationD.is determined by his childhoodQuestions21-25are based on the following passage.By far the most common snake in Britain is the adder(奎蛇).In Scotland,in fact, there are no other snakes at all.The adder is also the only British snake with a poisonous bite.It can be found almost anywhere, but prefers sunny hillsides and rough open country, including high ground. In Ireland there are no snakes at all. Most people regard snake bites as a fatal(致命的)misfortune, but not all bites are serious, and very few are fatal.Sometimes attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be more dangerous than the bite itself, with amateurs(外行人)heroically, but mistakenly, trying do-it-yourself surgery(手术)and other unnecessary measures. All snakes have small teeth,so that all snakes can bite, but only the bite of the adder presents any danger.British snakes are shy animals and far more frightened of you than you could possibly be of them. The adder will attack only if it feels threatened,as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally,or if you try to catch it or pick it up,which it dislikes intensely. If it hears you coming,it will normally get out of the wa6y as quickly as it can,but adders cannot move very rapidly and may attack before moving if you are very close. The effect of a bite varies considerably. It depends upon several things, one of which is the body-weight of the person bitten. The bigger the person, the less harmful the bite is likely to be, which is why children suffer far more seriously from snake bites than adults.A healthy person will also have better resistance against the poison.Very few people actually die from snake bites in Britain, and though these bites can make some people very ill, there are probably just as many cases of bites having little or no effect,as there are of serious illness.21.Adders are most likely to be found_______.A)in wider parts of Britain and Ireland B)in Scotland but nowhere elseC)on wild land through Britain D)in the countryside in England22.If you are with someone who is bitten by an adder, you should______.A)try to catch the snake B)not treat the bite yourselfC)not worry too much about the victim D)operate him as soon as possible23.We are told that adders_______.A)normally friendly towards peopleB)unlikely to bite except in self-defenseC)likely to attack people whenever they see themD)not afraid of human beings24.If an adder hears you approaching,it will usually______.A)move out of your pathB)take no notice of you at allC)disappear very quicklyD)wait until you are close and then attack25.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A)Adders are more likely to attack children than adults.B)The adder prefers to bite a person with a heavy body.C)The danger of adder bites is different from person to person.D)In most cases adder bites are more serious than other illnesses.Questions26-30are based on the following passages.Only the government can ensure that the American people have clean air and pure water. Congress must pass laws to stop manufacturers from polluting the air and water with the waste from their factories.Unless anti-pollution standards are enforced for all, companies that care about a clean environment will go out of business. For example,if Automobile Company X spends money to put an air-pollution control device on their automobiles, their cars will be more expensive than the cars produced by another company.People who don’t have the extra money or who don’t care about pollution will not buy the more expensive cars.Automobile Company X will go bankrupt (破产);that is,it won’t make enough money to pay its workers and to buy materials. It will then go out of business.Of course,no automobile company will make itself go bankrupt on purpose, and the pollution of the land and air and water will go on.But if the government says that all automobile manufacturers must make cars with air-pollution control devices, the cost of all manufacturers will be equal. So the government cannot let companies decide whether or not they want to stop pollution. The government must force manufacturers to clean up the environment by setting anti-pollution standards for everyone.26.If a company cares about a clean environment while others don’t,it will have to_______.A)change the anti-pollution standards for its productsB)sell its products at a more expensive priceC)buy materials at a higher priceD)pay more money to its workers27.The writer gives the example of Automobile Company X to show that_______.A)manufacturers will not take care of pollution control on their own willB)few manufacturers are aware of the importance of air-pollution controlC)air-pollution control devices are more expensive than other devicesD)people like to buy cars that are equipped with pollution control devices28.According to the writer,anti-pollution standards ensure that______.A)no manufacturer will go bankrupt for spending money on pollution controlB)less money will be spent in buying pollution control devicesC)manufacturers know how to control pollution more effectivelyD)all manufacturers have to take measures to control pollution29.The purpose of this passage is_______.A)to describe how a company can go bankruptB)to emphasize the urgent need of cleaning up the environmentC)to stress the importance of the government’s role In preventing pollutionD)to tell how difficult it is to keep the environment free from air-pollution30.What can be inferred from thin passage?A)Companies have not been given an equal chance to develop their business.B)A company will go bankrupt if its cars have to be installed with pollution control devices.C)The US government has not set up standards on pollution control for car producers.D)It is necessary to persuade producers to take effective pollution control measure. Questions31-35are based on the following passages.Large-scale production in a large market brings advantages:mass production helps to reduce the manufacturing costs of consumer goods and the single market also makes it easier to specialize. Together, these two considerations improve businesses’chance of making profit.Within the single market, the Community(欧共体)is making clearly strict European industrial standards which help European industry compete with imported products and conquer new markets,as well as making high-quality products available to the consumer. The European commission’s competition policy serves to ensure that the common interest prevails over individual business interests. At the same time,it is flexible enough to allow co-operation between small firms.Business are being encouraged to operate outside the country in which they are based by measures designed to ensure that they are no longer taxed twice for doing so.The days when taxesare an obstacle to Europe-wide business operation will soon be gone.In addition to creating a favorable business environment, the community’s industrial policy is also concerned with developing specific strategies. The objective is to carry out long-term plans to develop industries such as the electronics industry, information technology, biotechnology(生物技术)and textiles. These measures,at national and community level, will influence the quality of products, the technology used to manufacture them, the training the workforce receives, and the development of new outlets. In short,a whole range of instruments will be created to protect the future of European technology. These projects will require extra funding at Community level for training, research and development and communications networks. The extra Community funding will be used as rationally as possible in a way which maximizes the benefit to European industry.31.The European Community has found______.A)a single market to carry out mass productionB)the Community market to produce high It found that human -influenced climate change was raising the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition (营养不良)and heal-related health problems. But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions. Along with the deaths, the report said that the lives of 325 million people, primarily in poor countries, were being seriously affected by climate change. It projected that the number would double by 2030.Roger Pielke Jr. a political scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum's report was“a methodologicalembarrassment ” because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic lossesrelated to human-driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting fromthe growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable (易受伤害的)regions. He said the report was aimed at world leaders, who will meet in Copenhagen in December to negotiate a new international climate treaty. In a press release describing the report, Mr. Annan stressed the need for the negotiations to focus on increasing the flow of money from rich to poor regions tohelp reduce their vulnerability to climate hazards while still curbing the emissions ofthe heat-trapping gases. However, a group of Dutch architects have already begun 3D printing an entire canal house in Amsterdam. Is the first 3D printed house a gimmick(喙头)?Definitely! Is it an experiment that pushes the possibilities for 3D printing technology and architecture? Maybe!3D Print Canal House is the brainchild of DUS Architects. “Kamer Maker,”Dutch for “room maker”, is their giant printer built inside a shipping container. Just a few weeks ago, Kamer Maker began printing plastic furniture and walls at an empty canal-side lot in northern Amsterdam. 58.Smaller versions of the unusual honeycomb walls have been tested on normal desktop printers, and everyone just needed to scale it up (按比例放大). Well, if only it were that easy.“The printer did not always manage to spread the plastic evenly(均匀的),making some of the ribs of the honeycomb structure of the block uneven,” reported ARN(Australian Radio Network) to the surprise of no one who has used a 3Dprinter. But the architects remain optimistic. The first few printed blocks are means to be test prices as they improve the process. It takes about a week to print a 3-meter high block right now. The project’s leaders hope to eventually get that down to two hours and finish the first of 12 rooms in a year, and the entire house in less than 3 years. Finally, 3D Print Canal House is an architecture research project, one that is very much being conducted in the public eye. You can actually buy tickets to visit the construction site for 2.50 Euros. The top floors will become more decorated, for example, as newer techniques are used. They’ll explore the possibilities of 3D printing, like honeycomb walls or an entire room recycled, redesigned, and built again. Nobody’s going to move into 3D printed house soon, but, if anyone ever dose, something might be learned from this experiment by the email.31. It projected that the number would double by 2030.Roger Pielke Jr. a political scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum's report was “a m ethodological embarrassment” because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic lossesrelated to human-driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting from the growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable (易受伤害的)region s. Dr. Pielke said that “climate change is an important problem requiring our utmost attention. Global temperatures affect the rate of economic development.B. Rates of death from illnesses have risen due to global warming.C. Malnutrition has caused serious health problems in poor countries.D. Economic trends have to do with population and natural disasters.37. What do we learn about the Forum's report from the passage?A. It was challenged by some climate and risk experts.B. It aroused a lot of interest in the scientific circles.C. It was warmly received by environmentalists.D. It caused a big stir in developing countries.38. What does Dr. Pielke say about the Forum's report?A. Its statistics look embarrassing.B. It is invalid in terms of methodology.C. It deserves our closest attention.D. Its conclusion is purposely exaggerated.39. What is Soren Andreasen’s view of the report?A. Its conclusions are based on carefully collected data.B. It is vulnerable to criticism if the statistics are closely examined.C. It will give rise to heated discussions at the Copenhagen conference.D. Its rough estimates arc meant to draw the attention of world leaders.40. What does Kofi Annan say should be the focus of the Copenhagen conference?A. How rich and poor regions can share responsibility in curbing globalwarming.B. How human and economic losses from climate change can be reduced.C. How emissions of heat-trapping gases can be reduced on a global scale.D. Yours, Li Yuan 涉及知识点:写作2.Study the following picture carefully and write an essay entitled To Bridge the Generation Gap between Parents and Children. In this essay you should: 1. interpret the meaning of the picture 2. deduce the possible causes leading to the problem 3. suggest your counter-measures正确答案:To Bridge the Generation Gap between Parents and Children The above picture presents us a common phenomenon as well as problem in our society. Nowadays there is a lack of understanding between parents and children. Parents often complain their children ‘s “unreasonable”behaviors, while children usually think their parents too “old-fashioned”. Then, when a child has a problem, he usually goes to his intimate friends for sympathy and advice, leavinghis parents totally in the dark. Through the picture, the drawer might want to attract our more attention to this problem. What are the causes behind this phenomenon? First, the two generations, having grown up at different times, have different likes and dislikes for things around them and thus have little in common to talk about. Second, parents and children, due to the misunderstanding between them, may even feel it uncomfortable to sit face to face with each other talking. Finally, with the pace of modern life becoming faster and faster, both parents and children are too busy to spare enough time to exchange ideas, even if they find it necessary to communicate. As a result, the gap between them is growing wider and wider. To bridge this so-called generation gap, both parents and children should make an effort. The children should respect their seniors. The older generation, on the other hand, should show solicitude for the young. If they take the first step by actually talking to one another, it won’t be long before the arrival of a better understanding between parents and children.解析:这则写作要求描述的是一幅漫画。

[专升本类试卷]专升本英语(阅读)模拟试卷1一、Part III Reading ComprehensionDirections: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.1 "Surfing the Internet can be as addictive as drugs, alcohol or gambling. " a university of Pittsburgh researcher said last month. In a study of almost 400 men and women in Canada, researchers found Internet addiction hooked people into spending 40 hours or more a week online, most often involved in role-playing games or engaging in chat room discussions. One 17-year-old boy was so addicted to Internet activities that his parents had to admit him to a drug-alcohol rehabilitation hospital for 10 days for treatment. One woman, described by friends, family and children as the perfect homemaker, wife and mother, became so addicted to the Internet that she would not cook, clean or do the laundry and was neglecting her children and husband because she was spending as many as 12 hours a day talking to acquaintances on the Internet. Finally her husband said, "choose me or the computer. " She divorced him.Psychologist Kimberly Young, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh' s Bradford Campus, found that 76 percent of the subjects in the study spend an average of 40 hours a week on the Internet.Of the 396 people who met Young' s criteria for addicted Internet users, 157 were men, 239 women. The men were younger with an average age of 29, the women averaged 43 years of age.The largest group of addicted users of the Internet were people who were not working outside the home : that is, homemakers, students, and those who were disabled or retired. In a presentation at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in Toronto, 82 percent of the addicted users said they had slowly drifted into their addictions.Young described the Internet as any online system such as America online, CompuServe, Prodigy, computer bulletin board systems or the Internet itself, accessed by an Internet Provider. What does this passage mainly talk about?(A)Internet can be as harmful as drugs.(B)Internet is very important nowadays.(C)People are easily addicted to Internet.(D)Women are more easily addicted to Internet.2 Following divorce, life for you and your children can be unnecessarily complicated by a variety of problems you simply hadn ' t foreseen.Yet once you understand how and why your life has changed after divorce, and what you can do about it, you can gain a fresh perspective and move in the direction of improving your life.Richard Crawford was only six years old when his mother, a beautiful 32-year-old woman, first brought him to me. She claimed that Richard had "problems" adjusting to the divorce she' s acquired only five months previously. But after several sessions, she tearfully confessed that bringing Richard to see me was only an excuse to get help for herself. "I felt shy at first about telling you the truth, but I simply have to get the whole thing off my mind. Since I divorced Clive about five months ago, my life' s collapsed. I feel so depressed, lonely, rejected, and afraid of the future!""And now you feel the divorce was a big mistake?" I asked."Yes. But I was the one who wanted the divorce, and now I feel so miserable and depressed. I guess I' m too mixed up to think in a clear way. " She replied." It' s very common for somebody to realize gradually that life after a divorce can be more hurtful, in so many unexpected ways, than the life they endured with their former spouse(配偶). Right now things looked pretty grim and hopeless. But you' 11 survive, and hopefully, start a new and better life for yourself and Richard. "You should not use Richard as an excuse not to be socially active. You ' ve a right to build a new life for yourself, to change your style of living to suit your new circumstances. Your self-confidence can be built up again through happy, pleasant, rewarding social experiences with new friends, new hobbies, and a new life style. Don' t let guilt feeling stand in your way.In this selection, the author mainly talked about______.(A)how Mrs. Crawford had divorced her husband(B)how the mother and her son felt after the divorce(C)what a single mother should do to adjust to the new life after divorce(D)his sympathy for a woman who was divorced by her husband3 One thing almost everyone is agreed on, including Americans, is that they place a very high valuation upon success. Success does not necessarily mean material rewardsbut recognition of some sort—preferably measurable. If the boy turns out to be a preacher, instead of a businessman, that' s all right. But the bigger his church and congregation, the more successful he is judged to be.A good many things contributed to this accent on success. There was the Puritan belief in the virtue of work, both for its own sake and because the rewards it brought were regarded as signs of God ' s love. There was the richness of opportunity in a land waiting to be settled. There was the lack of a settled society with fixed ranks and classes, so that a man was certain to rise through achievement. There was the determination of the immigrant to gain in the new world what had been denied to him in the old, and on the part of his children an urge to throw off theimmigrant onus(负担)by still more success and still more rise in the fluid, classlesssociety. Brothers didn' t compete within the family for the favor of the parents as in Europe, but strove for success in the outer world, along paths of their own choosing. What is the main idea of the passage?(A)Americans place a high valuation upon success.(B)There are many ways to gain success in America.(C)How success is measured in America.(D)The Puritan believe in success.4 Exchange a glance with someone, and then look away. Do you realize that you have made a statement? Hold the glance for a second longer, and you have made a different statement. Hold it for 3 seconds, and the meaning has changed again. For every social situation, there is a permissible time that you can hold a person' s gaze without being intimate, rude, or aggressive. If you are on an elevator, what gaze-time are you permitted? To answer this question, consider what you typically do. You very likely give other passengers a quick glance to size them up(打量)and to assure them that you mean nothreat. Since being close to another person signals the possibility of interaction, you need to emit a signal telling others you want to be left alone. So you cut off eye contact, which sociologist Erving Goffman(1963)calls "a dimming of the lights". You look down at the floor, at the indicator lights, anywhere but into another passenger' s eyes. Should you break the rule against staring at a stranger on an elevator, you will make the other person exceedingly uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself. If you hold eye contact for more than 3 seconds, what are you telling another person? Much depends on the person and the situation. For instance a man and a woman communicate interest in this manner. They typically gaze at each other for about 3 seconds at a time, and then drop their eyes down for 3 seconds, before letting their eyes meet again. But if one man gives another man a 3-second-plus stare, he signals "I know you," "I am interested in you," or "You look peculiar and I am curious about you. " This type of stare often produces hostile feelings. The passage mainly discusses______.(A)the limitation of eye contact(B)the exchange of ideas through eye contact(C)proper behavior in various situations(D)the role of eye contact in interpersonal communication5 In the second half of year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about a half a dozen generate the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that give them hurricane status, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large number of people. The great storms that hit the coast start as innocent circling disturbances even thousands of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, moist air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat that is converted to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to swirl in a counter-clockwise motion. The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by a hurricane' s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than sixmonths. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6 to 12 inch downpours resulting in sudden floods. So the massacre(大屠杀)on the road may be regarded as a social problem. In fact, the enemies of society on wheels are rather harmless people, just ordinary people acting carelessly, you might say. But it is a principle both of law and common morality that carelessness is no excuse when one’s actions could bring death or damage to others Researchers have estimated that as many as 80 percent of all automobile accidents can be attributed to the psychological condition of the driver. Emotional upsets can distort drivers reactions, slow their judgments, and blind them to dangers that might otherwise be evident. The experts warn that it is vital for every driver to make a conscious effort to keep one’s emotions under control. Yet the irresponsibility that accounts for much of the problem is not confined to drivers. Street walkers regularly violate traffic regulations. They are at fault in most vehicle walker accidents. And many cyclists even believe that they are not subject to the basicrules of the road. Significant legal advances have been made towards safer driving in the past few years. Safety standards for vehicle have been raised both at the point of manufacture and through periodic roadworthiness inspections. In addition, speed limits have been lowered. Due to these measures, the accident rate has deceased. But the accident experts still worry because there has been little or no improvement in the way drivers behave. The only real and lasting solution, say the experts, is to convince people that driving is a skilled task requiring constant care and concentration. Those who fail to do all these things present a threat to those with whom they share the roadside.41.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?A.To show that the motor vehicle is a very dangerous invention.B.To promote understanding between careless drivers and street walker.C.To discuss traffic problems and propose possible solution.D.To warn drivers of the importance of safe driving.正确答案:D42.According to the passage, traffic accidents may be regarded as a social problem because( ).A.autos have become most destructive to mankindB.people usually pay little attention to law and moralityC.civilization brings much harm to peopleD.the lack of virtue is becoming more severe正确答案:D43.Why does the author mention the psychological condition of the driver in Paragraph 2?A.To give an example of the various reasons for road accidents.B.To show how important it is for drivers to be emotionally healthy.C.To show some of the inaccurate estimations by researchers.D.To illustrate the hidden tensions in the course of driving.正确答案:B44.Who are NOT mentioned as being responsible for the road accidents?A.Careless bicycle-riders.B.Irresponsible manufactures of automobiles.C.Irresponsible driver.D.Mindless people walking in the street.正确答案:A45.Which of the following best reflects the author’s attitude toward a future without traffic accident problems?A.Happy and rather confident.B.Surprised and very pleased.C.Disappointed and deeply worried.D.Doubtful yet still longing for.正确答案:DThe often criticized child of the industrial age, advertising, has grown as societies have become more industrialized and, therefore, more commercialized. No modern industry or company can survive without advertising. It is the vital link between the producer and the customer. If advertising were abolished, as many people have suggested it should be, the public and the companies that advertise would suffer a considerable loss. Most people think of television as an inexpensive source of entertainment. Television’s primary purpose, however, is not to provide an entertainment service, except for government-owned network, it exists in order to promote products for companies. Unless the television industry received income from advertising, watching television would be at least as expensive as going to the movies. Like television, many magazines and newspapers exist primarily to sell products. In some sensitive cases, the stories, pictures, and editorials simply attract people to buy a particular publication. Once a person begins to read, there is no escaping the advertising. Advertising not only pays for, or helps pay for, much of the mass media; it also provides the consumer with news from industry. This news functions first to influence the buyers to choose one product over another. It also informs people of new products what are important in their lives, for example, the development of salt-free butter for heart patients, or the development of tires that prevent skidding(刹车打滑)on wet pavement. Advertising does not usually increase the total number of products sold; it does help determine which company sells more of which products. Its main function is to relay news from the manufacture to the consumer. Since this is a necessary service, advertising will remain a part of people’s everyday lives and a part of every company’s budget.46.According to the passage, modern industry or company can survive( ).A.if advertising continues to existB.if the link between the customers and manufacturers remains goodC.if “the criticized child” dies outD.if societies have become more industrialized正确答案:A47.From the passage, we may figure out that “vital”in line 3, paragraph 1means( ).A.directB.importantC.onlyD.visible正确答案:B48.According to the passage, the main purpose of television industry is( ).A.to make money from customersB.to advertise for companiesC.to provide entertainment serviceD.to persuade people to buy new types of television正确答案:B49.The main function of advertising is( ).A.promoting products for companiesB.informing public of new productsC.influencing buyersD.all of the above正确答案:D50.Which of the following is NOT true about advertising?A.Advertising does not always increase the sales.B.Advertising serves to relay information from buyers to producers.C.Advertising is and will continue to be a necessary part of everyday lives.D.It is suggested that advertising should be abolished.正确答案:DAccording to airline industry statistics, almost 90% of airline accidents are not survivable or partially survivable. But passengers can increase their chances of survival by learning and following certain tips. Experts say that you should read and listen to safety instructions before takeoff and ask question if you have uncertainties. You should fasten your seat belt low on your hips and as possible. Of course, you should also know how the release mechanism of your belt operates. During takeoffs and landings you are advised to keep your feet flat on the floor. Before takeoff you should locate the nearest exit and an alternative exit and count the rows of seats between you and the exits so that you can find them in the dark if necessary. If smoke is present in the cabin, you should keep your head low andcover your face with napkins, towels, or clothing. If possible, wet these for added protection against smoke inhalation. To evacuate as quickly as possible, follow crew commands and do not take personal belongings with you. Do not jump on escape slides before they are fully inflated, and when you jump, do so with your arms and legs extended in front of you. His book Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television is an American cult(狂热崇拜的)bestseller, and after eight editions is still generating concern and savage debate(热烈的讨论)in the USA. JerryMander, a former advertising expert is convinced that for the sake of our freedom, and mental and physical health, we should learn to live without TV. Through his advertising background Mander is aware of how much of television is concerned with advertising. He sees the planting of values for profit as “a deep, profound and disturbing act by the few against the many, for a trivial purpose”. And, even without commercials, he sees TV as disturbing because it crams people’s heads with images, which alter the way they feel and behave. Pictures formed by 300, 000 tiny dancing dots altering 30 times per second, bombard(轰击)their eyes as people scan the images 10 times a second. The brain registers stores all 30 images, but the conscious mind registers far fewer. But, argues Mander, even if you reject or doubt what you see consciously, it is too late, the crucial(极其重要的)messages have gone home. He further argues that TV is deadening experience as it is restricted to just two senses—sight and sound. “Perception(感觉,感知)is dulled and flattened, “says Mander, “when you can’t feel and smell and totally experience an event. “People are just sitting passively for up to four hours a night watching a flickering screen and listening to artificial sound. “No culture in history has spent such an enormous amount of time looking at artificial light, “says Mander, “and another worrying fact is that prolonged exposure to artificial light alters human cells, which is why it is being used for certain medical treatment. “Researchers do not know if lifelong TV exposure is a physical risk or not, but as Mander Would argue, why run the risk ? It is important that people get up now and switch off before the harm is done —they might also become brainwashed, or, who knows, they might even be approaching death.56.Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television is a book which( ).A.caused distress to many AmericansB.achieved great success overseasC.aroused nation-wide interestD.expressed the views of a fascinating man正确答案:C57.JerryMander objects to TV advertising mainly because( ).A.the underlying principles concern money-makingB.it isineffectual in getting its message acrossC.a few people are deeply disturbed by itD.the values it conveys are accepted by all正确答案:A58.Mander thinks people’s feelings and behaviour are changed because( ).A.the brain is able to make conscious decisionsB.the conscious mind is incapable of filtering images to the brainC.their eyes scan a TV screen 10 times a secondD.the conscious mind is unable to reject the images it sees正确答案:B59.By watching TV for several hours every night, Mander implies that( ).A.people would lose the use of their other sensesB.people’s experience of life would become deadenedC.people’s ability to respond to events would lessenD.people would come to depend on only two senses正确答案:C60.Mander suggests that viewing TV over long periods of time( ).A.could lead to deathB.might cause brain damageC.could endanger people’s healthD.would make cells damaged正确答案:CClozeRumor is the most【C1】______way of spreading stories—by passing them on from mouth【C2】______mouth. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.37 Peering into the 21st century, authorities on the future see extraordinary changes. New scientific breakthrough will allow machines to take on more tasks that the human brain has traditionally done.Computers, which once only remembered data, will make more decisions. Machines that tell doctors today what symptoms the patients have may soon be recommending surgery. Others will design new buildings after questioning buyers about their preferences. Increasingly, human thought processes and even values are being programmed into computers, according to Earl Joseph, president of a consulting firm. "Imagine machines which are smarter and more intelligent than humans and, with their embedded (植入的) initiative, can't wait to tell you about it," he says.In everyday life, the future will mean talking directly to computers without pushing buttons. Just tell a toaster, stove or other kitchen devices what to do, and it will hear the message. The oven may even decide itself how long to cook the roast. Tell the television, "I want to watch Channel 12 at 8 p.m. , but store the show for next week" and the job will be done. The computer will talk back, too. Already some soft-drink machines complain loudly if you don't deposit enough cash. At home, a bedside machine may someday tell you, "You forget to turn off the basement light."Away from home, the automobile of the future will think for itself. Scientists predict that drivers will feed destinations into a computer that would then explain what route to take and even tell where parking spaces are available. A city's traffic-control system might instruct the car's computer how fast to go in heavy traffic and whether to change lanes.37 This passage mainly discusses ______.(A)the history of computer(B)the different functions of computer(C)the computer in the 21st century(D)the scientific breakthroughs in the 21st century38 The passage tells us that ______.(A)computers now cannot yet tell us what symptoms a patient has(B)computers now can remind you to turn off the lights in the basement(C)the author has a car that can think for itself(D)some computers now can already make loud complaints39 From the passage we know that toaster, stove and oven ______.(A)cannot understand the author's instructions(B)are all devices used in the kitchen(C)are useless without the help of computers(D)are invented for the life in the 21st century40 What does "deposit" probably mean in the first sentence of the fourth paragraph? (A)put in(B)take out(C)change(D)possess41 Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?(A)Earl Joseph is quite optimistic about the ability of computers to do more intelligent work for people in the future.(B)Earl Joseph insisted that computers are smarter and more intelligent than human beings.(C)Nowadays drivers can feed destinations into a computer that will explain what route to take and even tell where parking space are available.(D)Both A and B.42 There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air pollution. Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels(coal and oil) is creating a "greenhouse effect"—conserving heat reflected from the earth and raising the world's average temperature. If this view is correct and the world's temperature is raised only a few degree, much of the popular ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami and New Orleans will be in water.Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth's temperature—a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degree could create something close to a new ice age, and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report drafted by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very possible). Perhaps, if we're lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world's temperature will stay about the same as it is now.42 As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution ______.(A)caused widespread damage in the countryside(B)affected the entire eastern half of the United States(C)had damaged effect on health(D)existed merely in urban and industries areas43 As to the greenhouse effect, the author ______.(A)shares the same view with the scientists(B)is uncertain of its occurrence(C)rejects it as being ungrounded(D)thinks that it will destroy the world soon44 The underlined word "offset" in the seventh line Paragraph 2 could be replaced by______.(A)slip into(B)make up for(C)set up(D)catch up with45 It can be concluded that ______.(A)raising the world's temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earth(B)lowering the world's temperature merely a few degrees would lead many major farming areas to disaster(C)almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decade(D)the world's temperature will remain constant in the years to come46 This passage is primarily about ______.(A)the greenhouse effect(B)the burning of fossil fuels(C)the potential effect of air pollution(D)the likelihood of a new ice age47 For some time past it had been widely accepted that babies—and other creatures—learn to do things because certain acts lead to "rewards"; and there was no reason to doubt that this is true. But it used also to be widely believed that effective rewards, atleast in the early stages, had to be directly related to such basic physiological(生理的) "drives" as thirst or hunger. In other words, a baby would learn if he got food or drink or some sort of physical comfort, not otherwise. It is now clear that this is not so. Babies will learn to behave in ways that produce results in the world with no reward except the successful outcome.Papousek began his studies by using milk in the normal way to "reward" the babies and so teach them to carry out some simple movements, such as turning the head to one side or the other. Then he noticed that a baby who had had enough to drink would refuse- the milk but would still go on making the learned response with clear signs of pleasure. So he began to study the children's responses in situations where no milk was provided. He quickly found that children as young as four months would learn to turn their heads to right or left if the movement "switched on" a display of lights—and indeed that they were capable of learning quite complex turns to bring about this result, for instance, two left or two right, or even to make as many as three turns to one side.Papousek's light display was placed directly in front of the babies and he made the interesting observation that sometimes they would not turn back to watch the lights closely although they would "smile and bubble" when the display came on. Papousek concluded that it was not primarily the sight of the lights which pleased them, it was the success they were achieving in solving the problem, in mastering the skill, and that there exists a fundamental human urge to make sense of the world and bring it under intentional control.47 According to the author, babies learn to do things which ______.(A)are directly related to pleasure(B)will meet their physical needs(C)will bring them a feeling of success(D)will satisfy their curiosity48 Papousek noticed in his studies that a baby ______.(A)would make learned responses when it saw the milk(B)would carry out learned movements when it had enough to drink(C)would continue the simple movements without being given milk(D)would turn its head to right or left when it had enough to drink49 In Papousek's experiment babies make learned movements of the head in order to______.(A)have the lights turned on(B)please their parents(C)be rewarded with milk(D)be praised50 The babies would "smile and bubble" at the lights because ______.(A)the lights were directly related to some basic "drives"(B)the sight of the lights was interesting(C)they need not turn back to watch the lights(D)they succeeded in "switching on" the lights51 According to Papousek, the pleasure babies get in achieving something is a reflection of ______.(A)a basic human desire to understand and control the world(B)the satisfaction of certain physiological needs(C)their strong desire to solve complex problems(D)a fundamental human urge to display their learned skills52 The human brain contains 10 thousand million cells and each of these may have a thousand connections. Such enormous numbers used to discourage us and cause us to dismiss the possibility of making a machine with human-like ability, but now that we have grown used to moving forward at such a pace we can be less sure. Quite soon, in only 10 or 20 years perhaps, we will be able to assemble a machine as complex as the human brain, and if we can we will. It may then take us a long time to render it intelligent by loading in the fight software(软件) or by altering the architecture but that too will happen.I think it certain that in decades, not centuries, machines of silicon(硅) Will arise first to rival and then exceed their human ancestors. Once they exceed us they will be capable of their own design. In a real sense they will be able to reproduce themselves. Silicon will have ended carbon's long control. And we will no longer be able to claim ourselves to be the finest intelligence in the known universe. As the intelligence of robots increases to match that of humans and as their cost declines through economies of scale we may use them to expand our frontiers, first on earth through their ability to withstand environments harmful to ourselves. Thus, deserts may bloom and the ocean beds be mined. Further ahead, by a combination of the great wealth this new age will bring and the technology it will provide, the construction of a vast, mancreated world in space, home to thousands or millions of people, will be within our power.52 In what way can we make a machine intelligent?(A)By making it work in such environments as deserts, oceans or space.(B)By working hard for 10 or 20 years.(C)By either properly programming it or changing its structure.(D)By reproducing it.53 What does the writer think about machines with human-like ability?(A)He believes they will be useful to human beings.(B)He believes that they will control us in the future.(C)He is not quite sure in what way they may influence us.(D)He doesn't consider the construction of such machines possible.54 The word "carbon"(Line 4, Para. 2) stands for" ______ ".(A)intelligent robots(B)a chemical element(C)an organic substance(D)human beings55 A robot can be used to expand our frontiers when ______.(A)its intelligence and cost are beyond question(B)it is able to bear the rough environment(C)it is made as complex as the human brain(D)its architecture is different from that of the present ones56 It can be inferred from the passage that ______.(A)after the installation of a great number of cells and connections, robots will be capable of self-reproduction.(B)with the rapid development of technology, people have come to realize the possibility of making a machine with human-like ability.(C)once we make a machine as complex as the human brain, it will possess intelligence(D)robots will have control of the vast, man-made world in space.四、Part IV ClozeDirections: There are some blanks in the following passages. For each blank there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should choose the one that best fits into the passages. Then, mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.57 There are two aspects which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the brain he is born 【B1】 Human brains differ considerably, 【B2】 being more able than others. 【B3】 no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence 【B4】 he has opportunities to learn. So the second aspect is what 【B5】 to the individual — the environment in which he is brought 【B6】. If an individual is handicapped 【B7】 , it is likely that his brain will 【B8】 to develop and he will 【B9】 attain the level of intelligence of which he is 【B10】 .57 【B1】(A)for(B)by(C)with(D)in58 【B2】(A)most(B)some(C)many(D)few(A)But (B)For (C)Still (D)And60 【B4】(A)if (B)though (C)as (D)unless 61 【B5】(A)refers (B)applies (C)happens (D)concerns 62 【B6】(B)up(C)forward(D)forth63 【B7】(A)relative(B)intelligently (C)regularly (D)environmentally 64 【B8】(A)fail(B)help(C)manage(D)stop65 【B9】(A)ever(C)even(D)nearly66 【B10】(A)able(B)capable(C)available(D)acceptable五、Part V Translation from Chinese to EnglishDirections: This part is to test your ability to translate Chinese into English.67 The bomb will blow up at any time and (你们必须尽快地离开这儿).68 Although he thought he was helping us with the job, (但他只是在碍我们的事).69 You are so interested in this matter, but (我宁愿你对此一无所知).70 (万一他失败了), we would encourage him to try again.71 (迄今为止), he has read all the books stored in the small library.六、Part VI Translation from English to ChineseDirections: This part is to test your ability to translate English into Chinese.72 They gave up their efforts to look for survivors(幸存者) (after determining that all people in the sunken ship had died).73 (To my amazement), Bob left a well-paid job to travel around the world.74 I was (in the middle of writing the essay) when my computer suddenly stopped working properly.75 The number of people borrowing from public libraries has decreased, (but book sales are rising).76 (With steady wages), he would be able to feed himself and help his family.七、Part VII Writing77 You are required to write a composition on the following topic within 30 minutes: Competition and Cooperation based on the outlines given in Chinese.
