AWill it matter if you don't take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those testes included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfast, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effort than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention in class. Contrary to what many people believe, people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce other meals.1. The title of the passage should be ________.A. the importance of breakfastB. the result of a testC. breakfast will make you cleverD. breakfast is more important than other meals2. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. Poor breakfast affects those who work with brains.B. Morning diet may cause one to get fatter.C. Reducing lunch and supper is of less value in weight-losing.D. Eating less in lunch and supper may help to lose weight.3. Munro is the writer I have loved the most and loved the longest.Munro is only the 13th woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, and she is a woman who writes—well, I can’t bring myself to say“wrote”, despite her announcement this summer that her recent collection, Dear Life, would be her last. Anyway, she is a woman who writes about women and their concerns: love, security, jealousy, ambition, husbands, aging, housework, boredom, regret, and children. The younger women in her older stories are often poor, or very nearly so; the older women in her later stories are sometimes successful, or married to successful men. She returns so often to the same territory in rural Ontario that her work has been called “Southern Ontario Gothic. ”But the fact that she writes about one particular place belies(掩饰)the diversity(多样性)of her characters’personalities and desires: To know one girl in 20th-century rural Ontario is not to know them all.Munro is a writer who has greater reputation in the West, like last year’s Chinese winner Mo Yan. Munro has won the Booker, the National Book Critics Circle, the O. Henry, and just about every other award and honor the continent has to offer. When I heard she won $10, 000 for something called the “Harbourfront Festival Prize”a few weeks ago, I smiled to myself, imagining her rolling her eyes and cashing yet another check. Not that she would ever roll her eyes: At 82, she has perfected the“overwhelming favorite acts humbly surprised upon winning” dance. “I knew I was in the running, yes, but I never thought I would win, ”she told the Canadian media in a post-Nobel phone interview this morning.1. According to the passage, we know that.A. Munro is the 13th Canadian who has won the Nobel PrizeB. Munro has decided to stop writingC. Munro is good at writing long novelsD. Munro is a young woman2. Munro’s characters in her stories.A. are similarB. have different featuresC. are girls in 20th-century rural OntarioD. all have a happy marriage3. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 means.A. if you know one person, you will know all the peopleB. one person in one place will stand for all the people thereC. all the girls are the same in one placeD. every person in one place has his/her own unique feature4. Which of the following is TRUE about Munro?A. She has won many awards.B. She is a friend of Mo Yan.C. She won $10, 000 for the Nobel Prize.D. She loves money very much.5. When she knew she was offered the Nobel Prize, Munro felt.A. astonishedB. encouragedC. movedD. excitedⅢ. 任务型阅读请认真阅读下列短文, 并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个..最恰当的单词。

bone breaks seen in victims of falls. The researchers concluded that these and other breaks in her skeleton show that Lucy, who is believed to have stood about 3 feet 6 inches and weighed about 60 pounds, fell feet first and used her arms to support herself ﹣but that the injury was too severe to have been survivable. The researchers estimate that Lucy was going about 35 miles an hour when she hit the ground after falling from a height of roughly 40 feet, according to the statement. That sounds plausible. But other scientists are doubtful."There are countless explanations for bone breaks," Dr,Donald C,Johanson, director of the Institute of Human Origins and one of the scientists who discovered Lucy, said,"The suggestion that she fell out of a tree is largely a just﹣so story and therefore unprovable." Johanson said it was more likely that Lucy's breaks occurred long after she died, saying that "elephant bones appear to have the same kind of breaks,It's unlikely they fell out of a tree. But the new research focused on "a small number of breaks" that are consistent with "high ﹣energy bone﹣to﹣bone influences" and which differ from the sorts of breaks commonlyseen in other collected bones.Kappelman responded in an email,"These appear to have occurred at or near the time of death."(1)What can we infer about Lucy from Kappelman and Dr.Richard Ketcham's research?A.She got her name from a song.B.She had more than 35,000 slices.C.She couldn't use her arms properly.D.She made an effort to save herself.(2)What does the underlined word "plausible" in Paragraph 6 probably tree.B.The newly published study was meaningless.C.The argument on how Lucy died will continue.D.Scientists will find another way to solve the A British company, called Electrotextiles, has created a wide range of clothes—clothesthat have minds of their own! Scientists, working for the company, have invented a kind of fabric that can be blended(混合)with flexible electronic materials to create intelligent clothing. The result is electronic garments. If you think the wearer has to be wired to different devices, think again. These designer clothes are wire-free, soft to touch and washable! Like any electronic device, these high-tech clothes have to be powered. Currently, a tiny nine-volt battery serves the purpose. But the researchers hope that in the near future the clothes will generate electricity by using body heat. These clothes are 100 percent shock proof, they say.The Electrotextiles team has also created the world‟s first cloth keyboard. This keyboard can be sewn into your trousers or skirt. To use this device, you will have to sit down and tap on your lap! These “lap-t ap” gadgets(器具)are all set to take over laptop computers!Another useful garment is the shirt-cum-mobile phone. This handy invention enables drivers to chat comfortably with others at the wheel!Other popular electronic wear includes the denim(牛仔布)jacket with flexible earphones sewn into the hood(风帽)and the electronic ski jacket with a built-in heater. The ski jacket is also programmed to send signals to a satellite. The main purpose of the text is.A. to advertise for an English companyB. to predict the future trend of scienceC. to show how rapidly science developsD. to introduce some intelligent clothingB(2018·绍兴统考) When people first walked across the Bering LandBridge thousands of years ago, dogs were by theirsides, according to a study published in the journalScience.Robert Wayne of the University of California, Los Angeles, and Jennifer Leonard of the Smithsonian Institute, used DNA material—someof it unearthed by miners in Alaska—to conclude that today‟s domestic dog originated in Asia and accompanied the first humans to the New World about 10, 000 to 15, 000 years ago. Wayne suggests that man‟s best friend may have enabled the tough journey from Asia into North America. “Dogs may have been the reason people made it across the land bridge, ”said Wayne. “They can pull things, carry things, defend you from fierce animals, and they‟re useful to eat. ”Researchers have agreed that today‟s dog is the result o f the domestication(驯化)of wolves thousands of years ago. Before this recent study, a common thought about the precise origin of North America‟s domestic dog was that Natives domesticated local wolves, the descendants(后代)of which now live with people in Alaska, Canada, and the Lower 48.Dog remains from a Fairbanks-area gold mine helped the scientists reach their conclusion. Leonard, an evolutionary biologist, collected DNA from 11 bones of ancient dogs that were locked in permafrost(永冻层)until Fairbanks miners uncovered them in the 1920s. The miners donated the preserved bones to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, where they remained untouched for more than 70 years. After borrowing the bones from the museum, Leonard and her colleagues used radiocarbon techniques to find the age of the Alaska dogs. They found the dogs all lived between the years of 1450 and 1675 A. D. ,before Vitus Bering and Aleksey Chirikov who were the first known Europeans to view Alaska in 1741. “The bones of dogs that wan dered the Fairbanks area centuries ago should therefore be the remains of pure native American dogs, ”Leonard said. The DNA of the Fairbanks dogs would also expose whether they were the descendants of wolves from North America.Along with the Fairbanks samples, the researchers collected DNA from bones of 37 dog specimens(标本)from Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia that existed before the arrival of Columbus. In the case of both the Alaska dogs and the dogs from Latin America, the researchers found that they shared the most genetic material with gray wolves of Europe and Asia. This supports the idea of domestic dogs entering the New World with the first human explorers who wandered east over the land bridge.Leonard and Wayne‟s study suggests that dogs joined the first humans that made the adventure across the Bering Land Bridge to slowly populate the Americas. Wayne thinks the dogs that made the trip must have provided some excellent service to their human companions or they would not have been brought along. “Dogs must hav e been useful because they were expensive to keep, ”Wayne said. “They didn‟t feed on mice; they fed on meat, which was a very guarded resource. ”6. The underlined word “remains”is closest in meaning to“”.A. leftover foodB. animal wasteC. dead bodiesD. living environment7. According to the study described in Paragraph 4, we can learn that.A. ancient dogs entered North America between 1450 and 1675 A.
