Unit 3 A taste of En glish humouri •阅读理解A(2017课标全国n ,B)I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy andthe Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn ' t want me for thefilm —it wan ted somebody as well known as Paul —he stood up for me. I don ' t know how many people would have done that; they would have liste ned to their age nts or the studio powers. The friendship that grew out of the experienee of making that film and The Sting four yearslater had its root in the fact that although there was an age differenee, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft(技艺)and focused on digginginto the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of America n actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other —but always with an un derly ing affectio n. Those were also at the core(核心、)of our relati on ship off thescree n.We shared the belief that if you ' re fortun ate eno ugh to have success, you should putsomething back —he with his Newman ' s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn ' t see each other all that regularly, but shari ng that brought us together. We supported each other finan cially and by show ing up at even ts.I last saw him a few mon ths ago. He ' d bee n in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we did n ' t talk about it. Ours was a relati on ship that did n ' t n eeda lot of words.I. Why was the studio un willi ng to give the role to the author at first?A. Paul Newma n wan ted it.B. The studio power s did n ' t like his age nt.C. He was n' t famous eno ugh.D. The director recomme nded some one else.2. Why did Paul and the author have a last ing frien dship?A. They were of the same age.B. They worked in the same theater.C. They were both good actors.D. They had similar characteristics.3. What does the underlined word “ that ” in paragraph 3 refer to?A. Their belief.B.Their care for children.C.Their success.D.Their support for each other.4. What is the author ' s purpose in writing the text?A. To show his love of films.B. To remember a friend.C. To introduce a new movie.D. To share his acting experience.BA culture ' s values can be mirrored by its humor. Humor has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who disliked humor, “ Laughter is nothi ng else but sudden glory arising from some sudden thought of feeling far better than others. ” He thought humor to bea negative quality of human narrow-mindedness.However, Mordechai Gordon, Ph.D. of Education, insists, “ Humor allows us to view the world f rom an angle that is amusing rather than serious. ” I agree with Gordon. Learning to lookat the world through humor is important. In the United States, every four years an election occurs. Without humor as a way to express their feelings, how else would Americans keep from clawing their eyes out and going the way of lemming?Television shows like“ The Daily Show ” have become important parts of American culture. They are mothering the masses by metaphorically (隐喻地) airplane-ing politics intoour mouths. They make politics fun.Of course, politics is only one type of humor. Social humor helps people through the twists and turns of the human condition. American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self-image. On the topic of self-image, Hari Kondabolu stands out. He has a joke about the popular musical group “The Pussycat Dolls ”, describing their hitsong “Don' t Cha ” as a negative representation of women. He points out an obvious offence in American culture.A study from Loyola Un iversity of Maryla nd has show n that humor is one determ ining factorfor selecting a mating partner. Amongst other things, mates look for an outstanding funny bonein a potential partner.Of course, humor is not always used for good purposes. Humor can be lin ked to vulgarity(庸俗)and racism, but, like everything else, it has potential to unite humanbeings by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connection with one ano ther.Though life may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirrorat my in creased wrin kles (皱纹)to know that there is a comedy out there that even Chapl in was n' t aware of.With that in mind, remember to laugh with huma nity and sometimes at huma ni ty.5. Hobbes believed that humor _________ .A. was only a way to laugh at others to make on eself feel betterB. resulted in n arrow-min ded ness of huma n beingsC. had the power to mirror personal glory and national valuesD. was for people to view the world from ano ther an gle6. What is the author ' s attitude towards political humor?A.Worried.B.Disappo in ted.C.Curious.D.Appreciative.7. The fourth paragraph is developed mai nly _____ .A.by exampleB.by processC.by comparis onD.by classificati on8. What can we lear n from the last two paragraphs?A. Chaplin wasn ' t aware of being laughed at.B. The author feels helpless and sad about getting older.C. Never be the one who laughs at other people.D. The author is determined to face life with a sense of humor.n.语法填空(2017广西高三5月考前模拟)阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Unit 3 A taste of English humour李仕才***阅读理解。

What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed at the entrance? Or the soft background music? But have you ever notice the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stor es, customers’ intension to purchase increased by 80 percent. When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sale. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce)has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar shops(实体店)can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this. Now, a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.1. According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of some brand store?A.Friendly assistant.B.Unique scents.C.Soft background musicD.Attractive window display.2. E-shops are mentioned in the passage to _______ .A. show the advantages of brick-and-mortar storesB. urge shop assistants to change their attitudeC. push stores to use sights and soundsD. introduce the rise of e-commerce3. Which statement would the writer agree with?A.Put different shop on the products on display.B.Ask every shop assistant to wear light perfume.C.Place fragrant flowers in the shopD.Expose some coffee bean to air inside a coffee shop.4. Unit 3 A taste of English humourMy color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me 62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.21. Now a new study has tracked how low self-control can predict poor health, money troubles and even a criminal record in their adult years. The study began with 1,000 children in New Zealand. Researchers followed them for decades. They observed the level of self-control the youngsters displayed. Parents, teachers, even the kids themselves, scored the youngsters on measures like “acting before thinking” and “persistence in reaching goals”.The children of the study are now adults in their thirties. Terric Moffitt of Duke University found that kids with self-control issues tended to grow up to be adults with a far more troubling set of issues to deal with.“The children who had the lowest self-control when they were three to ten had the most health problems in their thirties,” Moffitt said, “and they had the worst financial situation. They were more likely to have a criminal record and to be raising a child as a single parent on a very low income.”Moffitt said it's still unclear why some children have better self-control than others, though other researchers have found that it's mostly a learned behaviour, with relatively little genetic influence. But good self-control can run in families because children with good self-control are more likely to grow up to be healthy and prosperous parents.“Some of the low self-control study members are more likely to be single parents with a very low income and the parent is in poor health and likely to be a heavy substance abuser,” said Moffitt. “So that's not a good atmosphere for a child. So it looks as though self-control is something that in one generation can influence the next generation.”But the good news, according to Moffitt, is that self-control can be taught by parents, and through school curricula that have been shown to be effective. 16.According to the text, the purpose of the study is to ________.A.measure children's self-controlB.observe children's level of self-controlC.help children to exhibit better self-controlD.find the effect low self-control brings to children17.Which of the following is TRUE of the study?A.The children were tested in knowledge.B.About 1,000 children got involved in it.C.It was being carried out worldwide.D.It had lasted for about 10 years.18.It has proved that children with low self-control tend to ________.A.break the law B.earn more moneyC.refuse to be parents D.be ill at 3 to 1019.According to Moffitt, who can help children get self-control? A.Doctors. B.Teachers.C.Researchers. D.Policemen.20.According to the text, which of the following statements is NOT true? A.Children with good self-control are more likely to be rich and successful parents in the future.B.Why some children have better self-control is not completely known yet. C.Parents' genes will determine their children's self-control.D.Children's self-control can be taught through proper education.BA new study has found that making someone laugh is one of the best ways to woo(求婚) one's lover. However, researchers have discovered that not all humour is equal. The quickest path to success is to use a very specific form of wit: self-deprecation. “Many studies show that a sense of humour is attractive to women, especially to their girlfriends, but we've found that self-deprecating humour is the most attractive of all,” said anthropologist Gil Greengross. One possible explanation is that taking_the_mickey_out_of_oneself is a high-risk strategy.“It is a risky form of humour because it can draw attention to one's real faults, thereby diminishing(缩小) the self-deprecator's status in the eyes of others. But self-deprecating humour can be an especially reliable indicator not only of general intelligence and creativity, but also of moral virtues such as humility.”Anthropologist Kate Fox, the author of Watching the English, believes self-deprecation is uniquely vital for those with an English cultural background. She said, “For the English, the rules of humour are the cultural equivalent of natural laws—we obey them automatically, rather in t he way that we obey the law of gravity.”“Pomposity(夸耀) and self-importance are outlawed. Serious matters can be spoken of seriously, but one must never take oneself too seriously,” she added.“As long as everyone understands the rules, they are duly impressed both by one's achievements and by one's reluctance(不愿) to talk about them publicly.”However, Greengross warns of another danger in the use of self-deprecation. “If you are a low-status individual, using self-deprecating humour can be disastrous to you,” he said.“Think about the secondary school teenager whom nobody liked, who made fun of his shortcoming in sports. His classmates laughed at him and he was considered more pathetic(悲惨的) than he was previously. This is high-risk attraction. It is not fo r everyone.”21.What is Kate Fox?A.A film-maker.B.An official at school.C.A lawyer.D.An expert in studying anthropology.22.From the passage,we know that Gil Greengross ________.A.is attractive to women all the way, especially to his girlfriend B.believes that he himself is really the author of Watching the English C.thinks that a low-status individual can be disastrous to him/her while using self-deprecationD.loves the secondary school teenager whom nobody liked because of his shortcoming in sports23.Th e underlined phrase “taking the mickey out of oneself” in Paragraph 3 may be replaced by “________”.A.making someone laughB.self-deprecationC.obeying the law of gravityD.pomposity and self-importance24.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.The quickest path to success is to make someone laugh.B.Self-deprecation perhaps lowers its status in the eyes of others.C.The English obey natural laws without obeying the law of gravity.
