It is much easier to cook and prepare tasty and nutritious meals and snacks when everyone is working on the same goals. Here are some tips for you and your family.Be a good role model. Teens are easily affected by what they see, so it is important for family members to follow a healthy lifestyle. If parents are active and eating well, teens are likely to follow.Keep healthy food in the house. If nutritious foods are available, your family members are likely to make healthier choices. Fill the refrigerator and freezer with nutritious foods, such as fruits, vegetables, lowfat dairy products (yogu rt,cheese and milk),and whole grains.Cook and eat meals together. Learning how to cook is an important life lesson. Ask your teens to prepare healthy meals with you. Instead of fried foods, use healthier ways to prepare foods such as baking, steaming, or microwaving. Talking and connecting with your teens is an important part of family time and it will also help slow down the pace of the meal so as to prevent overeating.Eat at home most of the time. Fast food is higher in fat, salt and calories than most meals prepared at home. What’s more, portion sizes at fast food and other restaurants are usually too large, and can lead to weight gain.Make small behavior changes. Permanent changes in health happen with small steps, not with strict dieting. Focus on making small changes, such as drinking less regular soda and juice, eating more fruit and vegetables which are rich in Vitamins,or eating less fast food. Making small changes as a family can lead to great health benefits.Click here for more information.1.What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A.To give housewives advice on how to cook tasty food.B.To offer advice on how to attract teens to eat at home.C.To tell parents some ways of helping teens form healthylifestyle.D.To advise family members to do exercise to lose weight.2.Weight problems can result from________ according to the passage.A.eating outside frequentlyB.having milk regularlyC.chatting over mealsD.eating enough whole grains3.We can learn from the passage that________.A.drinking regular soda is good for losing weightB.kids usually don’t like following their parents’ lifestyleC.healthy food contains less fat and salt but more vitaminsD.you must follow strict dieting if you want to keep fit 4.Where is the passage probably taken from?A.A magazine B.A textbook C.A website D.A newspaperB“Failure is not an option(选择)” is a very wellknown saying. But my father told me that “failure has a timeline”.You have to know that my father was a true genius (天才).He designed the first jet fighter plane the US Air Force had back in 1954,the F84.You also have to know that his only son is anything but a genius.I was born in 1941,and I am still here at 68 years old. I graduated from Point Loma High in San Diego on June 15,1960,and I was “pleased” with being in the top 10% of the lower onethird of my class of about 300 students. Well,at least I graduated! Some years later in the 1960s,my Dad talked to me about failure. At the time I was very discouraged at my career plans after serving two years in the Peace Corps in Gabon,West Africa, and some time with Air America in Vietnam. I said to my Dad,“Dad,you know I’ve been a failure at everything I’ve tried in life and I just don’t know what to do now.”My dad looked at me with those “genius eyes” and said to me,“Failure is a relative (相对的) thing. It has a timeline! Now just remember that failure is not an option...IN THIS LIFETIME!” He then explained to me that failure is part of a successful path, and that I should always keep in my mind that time, failure and success all work together. To this very day,I still love, respect, and honor my dad and my mom.Maybe some day I will “grow up” and be as smart as my dad was.5.In the writer’s opinion, his father was very________.A.serious B.great C.easygoing D.different 6.According to Paragraph 4,before talking to his dad,the writer________.A.was encouraged by his career plansB.had hope for a good lifeC.was very confidentD.had probably lost heart7.Which of the following statements would the writer’s father agree with?A.Some people will never succeed.B.People should not experience failure.C.Failure at a certain period of time is acceptable.D.Success has nothing to do with failure.8.Today the writer still hopes that________.A.he will be someone like his father one dayB.he will have a chance to work with his fatherC.he will be able to make good use of failure one dayD.he will find out the connection between failure and success CAs early as 1894,the newlyformed International Olympic Co mmittee (IOC) considered ice skating as a possibility for the first modern Olympic Games which would be held in 1896.In 1911,a member of the IOC suggested that winter sports should be staged as part of the 1912 Olympics in Helsinki. Some opposed the idea. At last, the IOC decided to hold Winter Olympic Games in 1916.However,World War Ⅰ broke out in 1914.After 1920,the national governing bodies for winter sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. The town of Chamonix,in the French Alps, planned to hold a winter sports festival in 1924,at the same time Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac,a member of the IOC,suggested that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. The IOC didn’t go that far,but did agree that Chamonix could call its festival an “Olympic winter carnival”.The festival drew 258 athletes from 16 countries to compete in bobsledding (雪橇车比赛),figure skating, hockey,Nordic skiing and speedskating. Charles Jewtraw from the United States won the first gold medal,in the 500meter speed skating, but the festival’s hero was Claus Thunberg from Finland. He won five medals, three of which were gold,in speed skating.Weather has often been a major story at the Winter Olympics, and so it was at Chamonix. The festival opened with rain and unseasonably warm temperature that turned snow and ice to mud. Then temperature dropped as far as 25 below zero and the mud became ice.Despite the weather, more than 10,000 people showed up. At its yearly meeting in 1925,the IOC recognized the Chamonix festival as the first Winter Olympics and decided that the Winter Games would be held every four years, just like the Summer Olympics.9.Why was the first Winter Olympic Games not held in 1916?A.Because the IOC didn’ t agree to it.B.Because it was still under discussion.C.Because some people opposed the idea.D.Because World War Ⅰ broke out in 1914.10.How many years earlier was the first modern Olympic Games held than the first Winter Olympic Games?A.16. Seeing that there is no one in sight, John starts to scream. John’s angry mother rushes over and drives Mary away. Once his mum has gone, John helps himself to Mary’s potato. We’ve all experienced similar annoying tricks when we were young —the brother who stole your ball and then got you into trouble by telling your parents you had hit him. But Mary and John are not humans. They’re African baboons(狒狒). ___16___John’s scream and his mother’s attack on Mary could have been a matter of chance, but John was later seen playing the same tricks on others. ___17___Studying behavior like this is complicated but scientists discovered apes(猿) clearly showed that they intended to cheat and knew when they themselves had been cheated. ___18___ An ape was annoying him, so he tricked her into going away by pretending he had seen something interesting. When she found nothing, she “walked back, hit me over the head with her hand and ignored me for the rest of the day.”Another way to decide whether an animal’s behavior is deliberate is to look for actions that are not normal for that animal. A zoo worker describes how an ape dealt with an enemy. “He slowly stole up behind the other ape, walking on tiptoe. When he got close to his enemy, he pushed him violently in the back, then ran indoors.” Wild apes do not normally walk on tiptoe. ____19___ But looking at the many cases of deliberate trickery in apes, it is impossible to explain them all as simple copying. It seems that trickery does play an important part in ape societies. ____20___ Studying the intelligence of our closest relative could be the way to understand the development of human intelligence.A. In most cases the animal probably doesn’t know it is cheating.B. An amusing example of this comes from a psychologist working in Tanzania.C. And playing tricks is as much a part of monkey behavior as it is of human behavior.D. So the psychologists asked his colleagues if they had noticed this kind of trickery.E. The ability of animals to cheat may be a better measure of their intelligence than their useof toolsF. This use of a third individual to achieve a goal is only one of the many tricks commonlyused by baboons.G. Of course it’s possible that it could have learnt from humans that such behavior works, without understanding why.答案[A篇语篇解读] 本文介绍了一些培养孩子健康饮食习惯的建议。

These were Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. The youngest sister, Anne, was also a gifted novelist, and her books have the same extraordinary, quality as her sisters'.Their father was Patrick Bronte born in Ireland. He moved with his wife, Maria Bronte, and their six small children to Haworth in Yorkshire in 1820. Soon after, Mrs. Bronte and the two eldestchildren died, leaving the father to care for the remaining three girls and a boy.Charlotte was born in 1816. Emily was born in 1818 and Anne in 1820. Their brother Branwell was born in 1817. Left to themselves, the children wrote and told stories and walked over the hills. They grew up largely self-educated. Branwell showed a great interest in drawing. The girls were determined to earn money for his arteducation. They took positions as teachers or taught children intheir homes. As children they had all written many stories. Charlotte, as a young girl, alone wrote 22 books, each with 60 to 100 pages of small handwriting. Therefore, they turned to writing for income. By 1847, Charlotte had written The Professor; Emily, Wuthering Heights; and Anne, Agnes Grey. After much difficulty Anne and Emily found a publisher (出版商), but there was no interest shown in Charlotte's book. (It was not published until 1869. ) However, one publisher expressed an interest in seeing more of her work. Jane Eyre was already started, and she hurriedly finished it.It was accepted at once; Thus each of the sisters bad a book published in 1847.Jane Eyre was immediately successful; The other two, however, did not do. so well. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting“things” rather than protective habitats(栖息地). Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.Zoos claim(声称) to educate people and save endangered species(物种), but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range(分布区). The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs. The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusually and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding(圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats. Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animalsActually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. This is almost the same as the age-old question: The chicken or the egg, which came first?Usually, juicers remove the juice and some pulp (果肉) from fruits and/or vegetables. It takes a lot of fruit to make acontainer of juice. We do get all of the vitamins, minerals, beneficial plantchemicals and carbohydrates in juice out of a whole fruit. But we do not getmuch of the fiber, the part that aids our digestive process, fills us up, andmay help protect us against heart diseases and certain cancers. However, you may be surprised to discover that some juices actually contain more necessary nutrients (营养). For e_ample, apples are not a good source of vitamin C, but manytypes of apple juice are fortified with vitamin C.Juicetypically has more calories than fresh fruit due to added sugar and less fiber. If calories are your primary concern, choose fresh fruit over juice and usewater to quench your thirst. You can also look for low-calorie cranberry juice, typically sweetened with sugar substitute. We do not feel as filled up from juice because it does not contain any fiber. For many people, drinking a caloric beverage (饮料), such as juice, is not as satisfying as eating the same amount ofcalories in food. For those of us who need to increase caloric intake (such asathletes, children, or teens) juice is a GREAT choice.Kidslove the taste of pure fruit juice, and parents love it because it is a healthysource of nutrients. But avoid junk fruit beverages which are mistaken for juice blends that contain various fruits like grape, apple and pear. These juices do not have the natural levels of vital nutrients that 100 percentpure juices like orange juice provide.56. According to the passage, you’d better have _______ to help prevent heart disease.A.fruit B.juice C.calories D.minerals57.What can we learn from this passage?A. We can getout of fruit all the nutrients which aid our digestive process.B. We can hardly determine which provides more nutrients, juice orfruit.C.People may prefer juice to food in taking in the same amount of calories.D. If you wantmore calories, fruit might be your better choice.58. Theunderlined word 〝blends〞 in Paragraph5 probably means 〝______〞.A.containers B.products C.substitutes D.mi_tures59. The authorwrites the passage mainly _______.A.to remind people of negative effects of juiceB.to call on people to drink more juiceC.to help people learn more about fruit and juiceD.to persuade people to avoid junk juice containing various fruitsBThe earliest type ofmedicine in most cultures was the use of plants (herbalism) and animal parts. There is no actual record of when the use of plants for medical purposes firststarted, although the first generally accepted use of plants as healing medicine was described in the cave paintings discovered in France, which havebeen dated back to between 25000-13000 BC.Thepractice of medicine developed gradually, and separately, in ancient China, Egypt, India, Greece, Persia and elsewhere. Medicine as it is practiced nowdeveloped largely in the late 18th century and early 19th century in England,Germany and France, thanks to advances in chemistry as well as laboratory techniques and equipment. The new ‘scientific’ medicine (whose resultsare testable and repeatable) replacedmedicine in earlier times, which was based on herbalism. The modern era really began withRobert Koch’s discoveries around 1880 of the transmission of disease by bacteria, and then the discovery of antibiotics (抗生素) thereafter. The 20th century witnessed major advancesin the treatment of infectious(传染性的) diseases in western societies. The medical world is now developingmedicine that targets (面向)one particular disease process. Thus medicine is being developed toreduce the side effects to the greatest degree and to treat cancer and long-term problems such as high cholesterol(胆固醇).Today’smedicine has evolved(逐步上升) over thousands of years as each generation used and e_panded theknowledge of earlier times. This will continue to happen, and it is impossibleto say how medicine will develop over the ne_t hundred years. Our understandingof human genome(基因组)will leadto fresh treatments and new discoveries may open the door to unimaginable advances in medicine.60.Which of the following statementsabout the use of plants for medical purposes is true?A. Itsorigin is now well known to the public.B. Someearly cave paintings in Egypt showed when people began to use plants as medicine.C. It isnow generally accepted that people began to use plants as medicine at least 15000 years ago.D. In mostcultures, the use of plants came after the use of animals as medicine.61. The author mentionsancient China, Egypt, India and other countries to show that_______.A. thesecountries have a long historyB. onlythese countries began to develop medicine in the beginningC. thepractice of medicine developed separately in different countriesD. thepractice of medicine developed in the same way in different countries62. The new ‘scientific’medicine __________.A. hastestable and repeatable results B. is basedon herbalismC. isdeveloped in EnglandD. is capable of curing every disease63.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that_____________.A. the medicine in the future willin no sense be associated with that in earlier timesB. no one knows for sure whatmedicine in the future will beC. there will belittle room for the development of medicine in the future, since it is alreadyas developed nowD. herbalism willplay a great role in the development of medicine in the futureCThe following istaken from a VOA Special English Education Report on VOA, the voice of America.Read carefully and answer the questions that follow this passage:1.Todaywe answer a question from Martin in Me_ico City. It is also changing the way we interact(交流)and build relationship. These are a few of recently recognized features of email, say experts, that should cause individual and organizations to rethink the way they use email.“Email has increased the spread of careless writing habits,”says Naomi Baron,a professor of linguistics at American University. She says the poor spelling, grammar, punctuation(标点符号)and sentence structure of emails reflect a growing unconcern to the way we write.Baron argues that we should not forgive and forget the poor writing often shown in emails.“The more we use email and its tasteless writing, the more it becomes the normal way of writing,”the professor says.Others say that despite its poor prose(文字),email has finished what several generations of English teachers couldn't:it has made writing fashionable again.“Email is a critical new communication technology,”says Ian Lancashire,a University of Toronto professor of English.“It fills the gap between spoken language and the formal methods of writing that existed before email. It is the purest form of written speech.”Lancashire says email has the mysterious ability to get people who are scared by writing to get their thoughts flowing easily onto a blank screen. He says this is because of email's close similarity to speech.“It's like a circle of four or five people around a campfire,”he says.Still,he accepts that this new found freedom to express themselves often gets people into trouble.“Almost everyday I get emails that apologies of previous e mails,”he reports. In the U. S.,the number of emails sent in a day exceeds (超过)the number of letters mailed in a year. But more people are recognizing the content of a typical email message is not often exact.1. The passages mainly shows us that ________.A. people should stop using email to communicateB. experts hold different opinions about emailC. Which of the following is NOT true about email?A. It is changing the way of communication.B. It is used more than letters in the U. S.C. It helps us write better.D. It causes us to write more.4. I thought that Mary would jump on the luggage carrier (行李架) over the back tire when I was riding. Mom knew exactly what I was thinking. “Don’t ride the bike with Mary on the back,〞she said. “It’s too dangerous. You could kill yourself. Take turns.〞I nodded, but I was thinking I could handle this. The pain in my mouth was unbearable, and I tasted blood. I turned towards Mary who was on the ground, holding her knee and crying. Seconds later, it seemed that my mom’s car stopped next to us. In 1985, two days before he died, he gave that ticket to Cave —ticket number 00001. “It created a fascination (热爱) with the bridge that I have to this day,〞says Cave. And it started him on a long journey towards another Harbour Bridge first.Cave came up with a simple but daring idea — lease (租用) the bridge from the government and allow ordinary people to climb Australia’s greatest icon. “I thoug ht it would take two years,〞says Cave, 63. “What appeared like a simple job turned into some very complex activities. But in business, you just have to keep going —it’s about having self-belief.〞Indeed, it took him nine years and ten months to convince the NSW government to allow his dream to be a reality. “Six years were wasted dealing with some very restrictive officials,〞says Cave. They threw difficulty after difficulty in his path with doubts over the safety of the climbers and the motorists below — the list went on and on.Through it all, Cave held the ticket tightly. It was a constant reminder of why, to Cave, this fight wasworth winning. Finally, in 1995, came the breakthrough (打破) he’d worked for — a letter arrived from WorkCover, the state’s o ccupational health and safety insurer, backing his idea.Since opening on October 1, 1998, over 1.8 million people have climbed the 1,439 steps to the top of the bridge, making BridgeClimb a $50-million-a-year success and a major international tourist attraction.8. The text mainly tells us that .A. not every dream in our life is very easy to come trueB. you should have self-belief even faced with great difficultyC. family members always give you the inspiration for successD. life seems a long journey towards another Harbour Bridge firstDA habitat is a natural area where wildlife lives undisturbed. Most animals and plants have become endangered not because they have been killed on purpose but because their habitats are being destroyed.Human activities have changed or destroyed habitats for thousands of years. The natural habitats in almost every country in the world have been affected in some way. Let us take Britain as an example. Nowadays most of the British countryside consists of fields of grass grown for cattle and sheep or crops for humans. If you had lived about a thousand years ago, the countryside would have looked very different for most of Britain was covered with forest. Now there are only small areas of woodland across the country, one of the largest areas being the New Forest in Hampshire. Throughout the centuries humans have steadily (持续地) cut down the trees to make room for the human population which has increased greatly particularly during the past 200 years or so. The trees have been replaced by houses, factories, schools, roads, farmland etc. Hedgerows (灌木篱笆) which were planted by humans as boundaries (界限) around fields have replaced woodlands. As you may imagine, the great loss of habitats has affected the wildlife that lives in them. Large animals such as the Brown Bear and the Auroch became extinct in Britain during the 10th century mainly due to destruction (破坏) of their forest habitats. Other British species of animals and plants have become extinct during the last few hundred years and many more are endangered today. Although many organizations are working to protect wildlife, natural habitats are still being destroyed.12. The text mainly tells us .A. what a habitat isB. how to protect wildlifeC. habitat destruction makes animals endangeredD. how to prevent the environment from being destroyed13. According to the text, animals are endangered mainly because .A. people kill wild animals on purposeB. the environment is seriously pollutedC. humans haven’t worked to protect themD. the human population has increased greatly14. We can learn from the text that .A. the New Forest is the largest woodland in the worldB. the Brown Bear has been extinct for many years in BritainC. humans destroyed natural habitats mainly by growing cropsD. humans planted hedgerows to make home for cattle and sheep15. Which of the following may the writer agree with?A. Setting up reserves is the best way to protect animals.B. We can hardly stop animals from being endangered.C. Things will become better for wild animals in Britain.D. Human activities began to affect wildlife 200 years ago.第二节〔共5小题;每题2分,总分值10分〕根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最正确选项。

“aha!〞 moment regarding handwriting.I had in my hand a sheet of paper with handwritten instructions on it for some sort of editorial task.It occurred at first that I did not recognize the handwriting, and then I realized whose it must be.I finally became aware of the fact that I had been working with this colleague for at least a year, maybe two,and yet I did not recognize her handwriting at that point. It was a very important event in the computerization of life—a sign that the informal, friendly communication of people working together in an office had changed from notes in pen to instant messages and emails. There was a time when our workdays were filled with little letters, and we recognized one another’s handwriting the way we knew voices or faces. As a child visiting my father’s o ffice,I was pleased to recognize,in little notes on the desks of his staff, the same handwriting I would see at home in the notes he would leave on the fridge—except that those notes were signed “dad〞instead of “RFW〞.All this has been on my mind because of the talk about TheRiseandFallofHandwriting,a book by Florey. She shows in her book a deep concern about the fall of handwriting and the failure of schools to teach children to write well, but many others argue that people in a digital age can’t be expected to learn to hold a pen.I don’t buy it.I don’t want to see anyone cut off from the expressive, personal associations that a pen still promotes better than a digital keyboard does. For many a biographer, part of really getting to know their subjects is learning to read their handwriting. What some people advocate is teaching one of the many attractive handwritings based on the handwriting of 16thcentury Italy. That may sound impossibly grand—as if they want kids to learn to draw by copying classical paintings. However, they haveworked in many school systems.1.Why was the author surprised at not recognizing his colleague’s handwriting?A.He had worked with his colleague long Aurelious Woolfolk, however, does a lot more than sit at a desk when he is in school. He scrambles up high ladders, walks down the sides of buildings, and rides in a fire engine. He is learning to be a firefighter at the New Haven Fire Academy.Woolfolk and 28 other students are currently learning what it takes to become a firefighter. Classes at the fire academy, which is in Connecticut, last for about 22 weeks. For two days each week, the students sit in a classroom to learn science, math, and emergency medicine. They learn the science of fires, how to calculate water pressure, and how to treat medical emergencies. During the other three days, the students go outside and learn how to hook hoses to fire hydrants(消防栓), climb buildings, rescue people trapped in burning buildings, and many other things.“Firefighters have to know lots of different things,〞 said Pablo Menendez, an instructor at the school. “We have to treat medical emergencies, know how to handle dangerous chemicals, and rescue people who have fallen from cliffs.〞Teamwork is one of the most important lessons students learn at the school. “Work ing together saves lives,〞 said Capt. William Seward, the director of the academy. “Students need to learn that they are part of a team.〞Fighting fires is not easy. The suits and equipment a firefighter wears weigh about 40 pounds.Firefighters are very busy. In New Haven, they respond to32,000 emergency calls a year Each time firefighters go out, they know they might not come back. Across the United States about 100 firefighters die each year. “That’s why the lessons learned here at the academy are so imp ortant,〞said Seward. “What they learn here can save their lives.〞Firefighters know how dangerous their jobs are. Their training helps them overcome their heights and fires. “When you’re up there on the ladder looking down, it’s scary,〞 said one student. “To do this job, you’ve got to wipe out the fear.〞Firefighters overcome their fear for one reason. “I wanted to help other people,〞said Leah Harwin. “I think it is important to help other people whenever you can.〞21.According to the passage, which activity must a student at the Fire Academy complete?A. handling dangerous chemicalsB. swimming under pressureC. jumping from a buildingD. sitting in the classroom22.Why is it important for students at the Fire Academy to have lessons inside and outside the classroom?A. Firefighters need to practice emotional skills to calm people down.B. Firefighters need to practice mental and physical skills to succeed.C. Firefighters need to practice wearing heavy gear to get used to the weight.D. Firefighters need to practice climbing a ladder to overcome a fear of height23.What is the purpose of the passage?A. to describe the activities at the New Haven Fire AcademyB. to inform the reader of the dangers of being a firefighterC .to compare the New Haven Fire Academy to public schoolD. to force students to attend the New Haven Fire AcademyBSome colors people see late at night could cause signs of clinical(临床(lín chuánɡ)的)depression(沮丧). That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals(个人) who live or work in low levels of light overnight(整夜) can develop clinical depression. Doctors use the word “clinical depression〞to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide. In the new study, American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters(仓鼠(cānɡ shǔ))to different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and are active at night. The animals were separated into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their night-time period. Another group was placed in front of a blue light, a third group slept in front of a white light, while a fourth was put in front of a red light. After four weeks, the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water.Randy Nelson heads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University. He says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. “What we saw is that these animals didn’t show any sleep uneasiness(不安(bù ān)) at all but they did mess up biological clock genes a nd they did show depressive sign while if they were in the dim(微弱)red light, they did not.〞Randy Nelson notes that photosensitive(感光(gǎn guāng))cells in the eyes have little to do with eyesight. He says these cells send signals to the area of the brain that controls what has been called the natural sleep-wake cycle. He says there’s a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness.24.Researchers use hamsters in the experiment because __________.A.they are similar to humans in dealing with colorsB.they are easy to observe and studyC.they are sensitive to colors like human beingsD.they are active at night and sleep during the day25.What sign shows that the hamsters are being depressed?A.They drink less sugary water.B.They don’t sleep well.C.Their eyesight becomes worse.D.Their energy level becomes low.26.__________ tends to cause hamsters to be depressed.27.What can help people who work late at night to avoid being depressed?A.Not being exposed to dim red light when using computers.B.Equipping their computer screens to put it more in the reddish light.C.Living or working in low levels of light overnight.D.Going to see doctors of clinical depression regularly for help.CAlmost all theme park accidents can be prevented. Here, based on coverage of theme park safety, are some tips to help you and your family stay safe on your next visit. If you are visiting with a child, take a moment to explain the ride to them, and tell them how they should behave. They are depending upon you to keep them safe. Set a good example for them by following the rules of the park, and make sure that they know you expect them to follow those rules, too.Tell them to stay seated, to hold the grab bar or put their hands in the laps, and not to stick their knees and feet outside a ride vehicle. Make them look to you for the okay to get on or off a ride, too. And never put a crying child on a ride. If your child starts to cry, let others pass you in line until your child is calmed. Or, gently exit the queue and find something more relaxing to do.Young kids can’t keep an adult’s pace in a theme park. Let them take plenty of breaks.“Kids get tired,〞 said TPI reader Matt Johnson, a father of four. “Tired kids make parents even more tired. And tired kids and parents may get hurt —physically and emotionally.〞He advises that parents plan a mid-day break, perhaps a swim back at the hotel, to avoid mid-day heat an d crowds. “You will see cranky families having a miserable time while you are refreshed and having a great evening.〞28. The second paragraph tells readers that ________.A. children should be trained to be more independentB. adults should tell children some safety rules firstlyC. adults should set a good example to behave well in a theme parkD. there is a danger to take young children to visit a theme park29. Which of the following is NOT right for children who are taking the rides?A. They cannot put their hands away from the grab bar.B. They are forbidden to put their knees or feet out.C. They should ask adults’ permission first to get on a ride.D. Without adults’ okay sign, children shouldn’t get off a ride.30. If your child begins to cry just when he is going to take a ride, you should ________.A. tell him to be relaxedB. make him share your interestC. give up the present activityD. encourage him to be brave31. We may infer from Matt Johnson’s words that ________.A. he doesn’t like to visit a theme park with his childrenB. parents with many children may be tired of visiting a theme parkC. not all the families are relaxed or happy when they visit a theme parkD. visitors should arrange everything carefully before startingDWhat will power your house in the future?Nuclear, wind,or solar power?According to scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US,it might be leaves — but artificial (人造(rénzào)的) ones.Natural leaves are able to change sunlight and water into energy. It is known as photosynthesis (光用).Now researchers have found a way to imitate this seemingly simple process. The artificial leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his colleagues at MIT can be seen as a special silicon chip with catalysts (催化剂).Similar to natural leaves,it can split water into hydrogen and oxygen when put into a bucket of water. The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then stored in a fuel cell, which uses those two materials to produce electricity, located either on top of a house or beside the house.Though the leaf is only about the shape of a poker card, scientists claimed that it is promising to be an inexpensive source of electricity in developing countries. “One can imagine villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology,〞said Nocera at a conference of the American Chemical Society. The artificial leaf is not a new idea. The first artificial leaf was invented in 1997 but was too expensive and unstable for practical use. The new leaf,by contrast,is made of cheap materials, easy to use and highly stable. In laboratory studies,Nocera showed that an artificial leaf prototype (原型(yuánxíng)) could operate continuously for at least 45 hours without a drop in activity. The wonderful improvements come from Nocera's recent discovery of several powerful, new and inexpensive catalysts. These catalysts make the energy transformation inside the leaf more efficient with water and sunlight. Right now,the new leaf is about 10 times more efficient at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one. Besides, the device can run in whatever water is available;that is,it doesn't need pure water. This is important for some countries that don't have access to pure water. With the goal to “make each home its own power station〞and “give energy to the poor〞,scientists believe that the new technology could be widely used in developing countries, especially in India and rural China.32. What does the underlined word “imitate〞 in Paragraph 2 mean?A. produceB. holdC. preventD. copy33.Which of the following orders correctly shows how the artificial leaf is usedto produce electricity?a.artificial leaves split water into hydrogen and oxygenb.the hydrogen and oxygen gases are stored in a fuel cellc.the artificial leaves are put in waterd.the fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricityA.c,a,b,d B.c,b,a,dC.b,c,a,d D.c,a,d,b34.The purpose of the scientists at MIT in developing the new artificial leaf is to________.A.build up more power stations in the worldB.provide cheaper energy for developing countriesC.offer people in developing countries access to pure waterD.gain a deeper understanding of the photosynthesis process35.The main idea of this passage is ________.A.an introduction to the history of artificial leavesB.a mixture of water power and solar energyC.giving energy to the poorD.an invention copying photosynthesis第二节七选五〔一共(yīgòng)5题每一小题2分一共10分〕How to FocusImproving your focus can make you a better student or employee as well as a happier and more organized person.
