Describe something that you can’t live without.
The thing I want to talk about is my backpack.
Last year, one of my best friends gave me a backpack as a birthday gift.
This red backpack is very practical because it has many pockets and enough space to put my laptop in.
It’s made of canvas, so it’s water-resistant. When it’s raining, stuff in my bag won’t get wet. I often carry my backpack when I go to school since I need to carry all my books, my laptop, umbrella and water bottle.
Also, it’s easy to clean. If it gets dirty, I can just wipe it to get it clean. When I go picnic or go hiking with my friends, I also carry my backpack. It saves my energy and frees both of my hands. I can put snacks, my wallet, cell phone, and all the other stuff into the bag. When I go travel, either domestic or international, I like to carry my backpack as well. I have been to Hainan, Sichuan and Thailand carrying the bag.
The bag has been a part of my life since it’s practical, durable, convenient and fashionable.
Describe an ideal home that you would like to live in.
First, I prefer a big house. Well, who doesn’t? Everyone can have his/her own private space and it won’t be crowded. We don’t have to fight for the bathroom in the morning. We can have a lot of rooms
which are designed to cater to different needs such as exercise room, piano room, study and game room.
Second, there should be a huge backyard, in which I can plant many kinds of flowers and fruit trees. It’s a luxury to have your own garden for most people living in a big city. It would be the place that makes me feel peaceful and serene. There should also be a swimming pool that all members of the family enjoy using.
Third, my ideal house should be located in a good area. I’m already used to the convenience and comfort provided by the big cities. I can purchase almost anything I want from the shopping center. The transportation system around my ideal house should be much-developed. When I travel, I will have a lot of choices like bus, subway, trains or maybe light rail.
Describe a subject you didn’t enjoy in high school.
The subject that I didn’t enjoy most in high school was no doubt math.
First, I’m not so good at logical thinking. As we all know, math requires very strong ability of logical thinking and the concepts in math are also abstract. I felt that the knowledge we learn in math was not practical at all. We don’t need advanced calculus and geometry in our daily life. All we need is some basic arithmetic to deal with some simple problems. Instead, when we were in high school, we should spend more time on learning other practical subjects such as
English or Chinese, which will be used frequently in our future lives. Secondly, I really didn’t like our math teacher. She was a middle-aged woman. Her class was always so rigid and boring. She didn’t have much patience when we asked questions during her class. She also gave us a lot of homework to do and she made up tests about three times a week.
Besides the teacher, I really don’t like the idea that math being a compulsory subject in high school. Everyone has his or her own strength. Someone is good at linguistics and others are good at logical thinking. What the school should do is to maximize the strength every student has. But in China, schools try to make every student learn the same thing and be good at everything, which is not beneficial for the student’s future development at all.
Describe an important decision that took you long time to make. Last March, the State Council held a nationwide competition called “innovative project among university undergraduates in China”. Two of my classmates and me were interested in participating. We wanted to complete a survey about self-esteem of women in Chinese and Burmese interracial marriage.
However, there were some potential dangers. The most dangerous factor was the local armed conflict between different political parties. We may also encounter some other problems such as language
barrier. My parents worried that I might put myself in danger by doing the survey. I thought it was a quite meaningful project and a great challenge for me. If I complete the survey, it would be a piece of precious memory and a wonderful experience. I tried and tried to persuade my parents and eventually they approved.。
