Researchers at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found evidence that drinks at temperatures above 651, when swallowed, can cause cancer of the esophagus (食道). The researchers examined findings from other studies where tea and coffee were often served at 70℃or above. Those studies were completed in Iran, China and South America. In developed countries, health experts have linked esophageal cancer to smoking and alcoholic (酒精的) drinks. However, this form of cancer is more common in areas where people drink beverages (饮料, 酒水) at very high temperatures. In Europe and the United States, many people drink coffee and tea at temperatures around 60℃. And they often add milk which lowers the temperature greatly. However, tea drinkers in Iran and mate drinkers in South America often enjoy their beverages at closer to 70℃.The researchers find that South Americans not only drink their mate tea very hot, they also drink it through a metal straw (吸管). This sends the scalding liquid directly into the throat. The findings, however, are good news for coffee drinkers. In 1991, the World Health Organization listed coffee as possibly carcinogenic (致癌的).The WHO officials have since changed their position on that listing. They now suggest that the temperature of your hot drink is a greater risk factor than the actual drink itself. The results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible.(1).What might be the cause of esophageal cancer?A.Smoking.B.Alcoholic drinks.C.Unhealthy vegetables.D.Hot drinks.(2).Where do tea drinkers like adding milk?A.In China.B.In Iran.C.In Europe.D.In South Africa.(3).What does the underlined word "scalding" in Paragraph 5 mean?A.Sweet.B.Cold.C.Hot.D.Tateless.(4).Which of the following descriptions is TRUE?A.Once, the WHO thought coffee would cause cancer.B.Drinks below 60℃ can cause esophageal cancer.C.Temperature should not be the cause of cancer.D.Drinking milk is a much healthier way to keep away from cancer.BHave you ever wondered what wild animals do when no one is watching?Low cost, dependable and small modern cameras offered a big help. Cameras placed in hard-to-reach places have shot everything from small desert cats to larger snow-loving felines in the northern Rocky Mountains. Scientists have been able todocument the "private" moments of wildlife with leading technology.Grant Harris is a government biologist with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In his words, "there's no doubt that these wild cameras are important tools to learn new information on wildlife." Harris said some images help scientists see the effects of climate change.Researchers with the Wyoming Migration Initiative, or WMI, are among those using wild cameras along with global positioning systems, or GPS. But WMI director Matthew Kauffman says as those devices are limited, so is the amount of information they can gather from GPS. However, cameras can be left in very wild areas for days, weeks or even months. They can provide information on how many animals are moving over a given period of time.Putting those cameras in place requires careful planning. Wild video can show details about animal behavior. However, wild cameras have their problems too. Animals such as wolverines and bears sometimes attack them. Scientists do not know if the attacks are the result of anger or interest. Also, the devices have become popular tools to help hunters look for animals. Some people argue that it is unfair to use the cameras that way.Even with such problems, wild cameras are clearly an important scientific tool in researching wild animals.(1).What does the underlined word "document" in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Remind.B.Enrich.C.Appreciate.D.Record.(2).Which is a disadvantage of wild cameras?A.They cannot be left in the wild over a long period.B.They cannot be placed in hard-to-reach areas.C.They provide limited information.D.They might be stolen by people.(3).Why do some people argue against using wild cameras?A.It is difficult to fix the cameras.B.It helps hunters find animals easily.C.It is hard to achieve careful planning.D.It makes animals interested in the cameras.(4).What is the authors attitude towards wild cameras?A.Doubtful.B.Positive.C.Uncertain.D.Uncaring.CA group of blue-faced birds step through the grass shoulder to shoulder, red eyes looking around. They look like middle schoolers seeking a cafeteria table at lunchtime. Perhaps they're not so different.A new study, led by Damien Farine, an ornithologist who studies collective behaviour, shows that vulturine guinea fowls of eastern Africa, like humans, have multilevel societies. In the past, scientists assumed such social structures required a lot of brainpower. But the pea-brained guinea fowls are revealing the faults in that assumption. These large birds wander across the landscape in packs, often walking so closely that their bodies touch. They may fight each other to maintain their strict hierarchies (等级制度),but at other times they engage in friendly behaviours like sharing food.Suspecting the guinea fowl might have a social structure, Dr. Farine and his colleagues began a thorough study of their society. For a whole year, they made daily observations of 441 birds. Coloured leg bands in unique combinations let researchers tell the black-and-blue birds apart. They also attached GPS devices to the backs of 58 birds, which let them see exactly where every group went, 24 hours a day.The findings of the research suggest that vulturine guinea fowls have a multilevel society. There are groups within groups within the population as a whole. There even seem to be groups of friends within the small groups. This is the first time anyone has observed such a society in a bird. And Dr. Farine emphasizes this particular bird's tiny brain size. "They don't only have small brains relative to mammals (哺乳动物);they also have quite small brains relative to other birds," he said.According to him, living in this kind of society might actually make it easier to keep track of the social order. For example, if groups are stable and a bird can identify just one or two individuals within a group, it knows which group it's looking at — no need for a brain that can recognize every single animal. Multilevel societies also let animals adjust their group sizes based on whatever challenges they're facing. Depending on what enemies or resources are around, it might make sense to travel in a combined group rather than a smaller one."Having a multilevel structure may not require having a large brain," Dr. Farine said. There may be more birds and other animals out there that, although small-brained, have multilevel societies as our own.(1).According to the passage, what inspired Dr. Farine to carry out the study?A.The guinea fowl's social behaviour.B.Previous assumptions about birds.C.His interest in animals' brainpower.D.The faults in earlier research.(2).What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A.The research subjects.B.The research methods.C.The research findings.D.The research equipment.(3).What can be learned from the passage?plex social systems can be a disadvantage to guinea fowls.B.Guinea fowls are good at recognizing individuals in a group.C.Birds maintain the social order by travelling in combined groups.D.Small-brained animals can form multilevel societies.(4).What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To present the findings of a study of the guinea fowl.B.To explain the interaction patterns in multilevel societies.C.To introduce a new approach to observing the guinea fowl.D.To uncover clues about how complex societies are formed.DThe Art of War is an ancient Chinese military work that was written by Sun Tzu, a high ranking military general and strategist in the late Spring and Autumn Period. Composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare, it is said to be the best work on military strategies and tactics (策略) of its time, and is still read for its military thoughts. The Art of War is one of the oldest and most successful books on military strategy in the world. It has been the most famous and influential of China’s Seven Military Classics. For the last two thousand years it remained the most important military work in Asia, where even the common people knew it by name. It has had an influence on Eastern military thinking, business tactics, and beyond.Sun Tzu emphasized the importance of positioning in military strategy, and that the decision to position an army must be based on both objective (客观的) conditions in the physical environment and the subjective (主观的) beliefs of other competitive actors in that environment. He thought that strategy was not planning in the sense of working through an established list, but it required quick and correct responses to changing conditions. The book was first translated into French in 1772 by French Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot, and into English by British officer Everard Ferguson Calthrop in 1905. Leaders as diverse as Mao Zedong, General Vo Nguyen Giap, Baron Antoine-Henri Jomini, General Douglas MacArthur, Napoleon, and leaders of Imperial Japan drew inspiration from the work.1.What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text?A.To introduce Sun Tzu.B.To introduce The Art of War.C.To tell us the history of wars.D.To tell us some military strategies.2.According to Sun Tzu, ______.A.to position an army is a subjective matterB.objective conditions decide a war’s victoryC.strategy means sticking to an established planD.a general should react to changing conditions3.The author lists some famous people’s names in the last paragraph to ______.A.explain the history of The Art of WarB.advise people to read The Art of WarC.show the influence of The Art of WarD.prove The Art of War is used in many fields4.What do we learn about The Art of War?A.It is applied in more than military field.B.It has a history of about 1,000 years.C.It was translated earlier into English than French.D.It contains some business management strategies.

Having chosen family television programs and women’s magazines, the tooth paste marketer, for instance, must select the exacttelevision programs and stations aswell as the specific women’s magazines to be used.【解析】在这个有30多个词的简单句中,句首用了现在分词的完成式Having chosen family television programs and women’s magazines作时间状语,动词chosen后有并列宾语family television programs and women’s magazines;the toothpaste marketer是主语,中间for instance 是插入语,must select是谓语,the exact television programs and stations aswell as the specific women’s magazines是三个并列宾语;句末不定式to be used修饰宾语the exact television programs and stations as well as the specific women’s magazines。
河北省衡水市2024-2025学年高三上学期第二次调研考试(9月月考)英语试题
河北省衡水市2024-2025学年高三上学期第二次调研考试(9月月考)英语试题一、阅读理解Below are some strategies that can be employed in class to engage students in learning activities.Think — Pair — ShareThis technique is popular in the lower elementary grades to encourage speaking and listening skills. First, ask students to think about their response to a question, and then ask them to pair up with another person, usually someone nearby. The pair discuss their response, and then they share that response with a larger group.FishbowlA fishbowl is organized with two four student groups who sit facing each other in the center of the room. All the other students sit in a circle around them. Those students seated in the center discuss the question. Students on the outside circle take notes. In a variation, students on the outside may provide quick notes known as “fish food” by passing them to students on the inside for use in their discussion.Concentric CirclesOrganize students into two circles, one outside circle and one inside circle so that each student on the inside is paired with a student on the outside. The teacher poses a question to the whole group. Each pair discuss how to respond. After this brief discussion, the students on the outside circle move one space to the right. This will mean each student will be part of a new pair. The teacher can have them share the results of that discussion or pose a new question.PyramidStudents begin this strategy in pairs and respond to a discussion question with a single partner. At a signal from the teacher, the first pair join another pair which creates a group of four. These groups of four share their ideas. Next, the groups of four move to form groups of eight in order to share their best ideas. This grouping can continue until the whole class is joined up in one large discussion.1.Which strategy can a teacher adopt if he doesn’t want all the students to speak?A.Think — Pair — Share.B.Fishbowl.C.Concentric Circles.D.Pyramid.2.What’s a unique aspect of Concentric Circles?A.Students change partners.B.Students respond to a question.C.Students pass notes to each other.D.Students take turns to present their ideas. 3.How does Pyramid work?A.Best ideas are collected for a presentation.B.One group combines with another with each step.C.The whole class work together to carry out a project.D.Groups of four move around the classroom to share ideas.Malonga was born in Brazzaville, Congo, where his grandmother owned a restaurant. His love for food and cooking started there. He spent his teenage years in Germany and he started his career working in top European restaurants. In 2015, he competed in the French Top Chef TV show as the first Black chef to do so. But it’s more driven, more intense, than just sourcing. Malonga has visited 48 African countries, eating his way across the continent. Upon returning to Kigali, he brings back new flavors as souvenirs(纪念品). He describes new tastes like a shiny new toy. “Right now, I’m eating cassava leaves — I love it!”Malonga wants to carve out a space for African food in the global fine dining scene. This experience fired a lifelong passion for birds and conservation, leading him to specialize in ornithology and join Pronatura Península deY ucatán (PPY), an environmental conservation group in Mexico.Gomez’s work is supported by Fish and Wildlife Service grant programs that improves wetland habitats for migratory birds and promotes environmental education and research. One of Gomez’s key projects involves restoring and managing wetland habitats in the Yucatan Peninsula, which has led to the return of several species. These efforts not only support bird populations butalso reduce the vulnerability of coastal communities by improving their capacity to adapt to environmental risks.Community engagement is central to PPY’s success, with the annual Toh Festival being a key example. This festival, named after a bird of cultural significance, hosts a variety of bird-related activities from March to November, including birding marathons, photo expeditions (探险), contests, tours, and workshops. These events inspire community members to appreciate and protect the region’s rich biodiversity. As a nature photographer, Gomez approaches his work with respect for the wildlife, aiming to remain careful to avoid disturbing the birds. His photography serves a higher purpose, creating media communications that support PPY’s environmental education and community outreach initiatives. His images not only record the beauty of birds but also provide a window into their world, inspiring people to learn more about the challenges they face and the habitats they depend on.Ernesto Gomez proved to us the power of photography to inspire and educate. His work ensures that the beauty of Yucatan’s birds and habitats continues to inspire, reminding us of the vital link between people and nature.8.Where did Ernesto Gomez’s interest in ornithology come from?A.An encounter with scarlet macaws.B.A documentary on wetland conservation.C.A photography exhibition about Mexican forests.D.An educational program onenvironmental science.9.What does the underlined word “vulnerability” mean in paragraph 2?A.The stability of regional biodiversity.B.The quality of being weak and easily hurt.C.The capability of managing wetland habitats.D.The probability of being adaptive to environmental risks.10.What is a primary purpose of the Toh Festival?A.To raise funds for conservation projects.B.To engage people in bird-related activities.C.To promote bird - watching as a tourism activity.D.To recognize the work of nature photographers.11.How do Gomez’s photos contribute to PPY’s mission?A.By providing visual documentation for scientific research.B.By attracting birding marathoners to the Yucatan Peninsula.C.By creating media communications for environmental education.D.By encouraging people to face the challenges of environmental conservation.Albino redwoods, with their slightly shining white appearance, are a rare sight in California’s coastal forests. Despite lacking chlorophyll, which is used to photosynthesize(光合作用), these trees have managed to survive, puzzling researchers for over a century. However, a recent study by biologist Zane Moore from the University of California in Davis may have uncovered the secret to their existence.Redwoods rank among the tallest organism on earth and claim an existence of some 3,500 years. They are known for their complex root systems that allow them to communicate and share nutrients during tough times. Researchers have seen this firsthand by introducing dye to trees on one side of an area of redwoods and tracing it all the way to the further reaches. In summer, they become more independent, and those unable to sustain themselves are cut off from the shared system in the autumn needle drop. So, if albino red woods can’t photosynthesize, why are they able to stick around? Moore’s research suggests that albino redwoods survive by tapping into the communal root system and absorbing sugars from healthier neighbors. Contrary to the belief that they are parasites(寄生植物), Moore’s findings indicate a symbiotic(共生) relationship.Albino redwoods tend to grow in less healthy conditions and have been found to contain high levels of poisonous heavy metals in their leaves. Moore theorizes that these trees are not only surviving but also serving a purpose by acting as a “reservoir(水库) for poison”, thus protecting their healthier counterparts. This discovery could potentially make it possible to use albino redwoods in polluted areas to safeguard other trees. The study highlights the interconnectedness of trees and their ability to look out for one another, forming bonds and even recognizing their offspring. Moore’s research emphasizes the importance of considering the entire community of trees, rather than focusing on individuals, to understand what’s happening in the forest.12.What can be learned about redwoods?A.They depend on each other for nutrition in tough times.B.They have unusually strong roots that can reach very far.C.How they photosynthesize has puzzled researchers for long.D.How they communicate among individuals remains a secret.13.How do albino redwood s survive?A.They become parasites of other tree species.B.They rely on the fallen needles for their growth.C.They have developed an alternative method of photosynthesis.D.They absorb sugars from the root system of healthier redwoods.14.What role do albino redwood s play in the forest ecosystem?A.They transport water for the forest.B.They act as a source of food for other plants.C.They protect other redwood trees by absorbing poison.D.They are responsible for the reproduction of the redwood species.15.What’s the best title of the text?A.Albino Redwoods May be the Result of PollutionB.Albino Redwoods May Survive to Help Nearby TreesC.Symbiotic Relationship is Built among Albino RedwoodsD.Researchers Discovered Complex Root System of Albino RedwoodsMischief Night, also known by various names like Devil’s Night and Cabbage Night, is a tradition that has changed over time in the United States and Canada. Historically, Halloween pranks(恶作剧)were performed on October 31st. 16 However, by the 1920s and 1930s, these pranks changed into more serious acts of destruction, possibly due to the social tensions of the Great Depression. In an effort to deal with this destructive behavior, parents and community leaders encouraged the tradition of trick-or-treat. 17 This shift effectively moved the mischief from October 31st to October30th.The custom of Mischief Night is particularly popular in areas with a history of Irish and Scottish immigration, such as the northeastern United States and English-speaking communities inCanada. 18According to a Cambridge Online Survey of World Englishes, 74% of Americans surveyed do not have a specific name for this night. 19 East Michigan referred to it as Devil’s Night, parts of New Jersey and New York as Mischief Night, and Washington State as Devil’s Eye. A similar study conducted by Harvard University a decade ago revealed other names like Gate Night, which involved opening farmers’ gates to let livestock roam free.20 The term Cabbage Night, for instance, originates from an old Scottish tradition where young women would use cabbages in fortune- telling rituals on All Hallows’ Eve, leading to a tradition of throwing cabbages at neighbors’ homes. Despite the decline in the use of specific names, Mischief Night continues to be a part of local traditions.A.Yet, regional names do exist.B.They offered candy to children in costumes as an alternative.C.The origins of these names have long been a topic of discussion.D.They involved light - hearted tricks such as throwing eggs at houses.E.Children had great fun but parents were concerned about the serious destruction.F.The data suggest that the specific names for this night are gradually fading away. G.However, it is less common in the South, West, and French-speaking regions of Canada.二、完形填空My friend Julie and I had completed an incredibly complicated set of instructions which led us to our comfortable room in Tokyo. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations. It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that mu generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not b lack and write anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it wasin 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it i s concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the musi c has a wider context,” says Moran, “So I want to continue those dialogue. Those are the things I want to foster.”1.Why did UNESCO set April 30 as International Jazz Day? 考点17 易A.To remember the birth of jazz.B.To protect cultural diversity.C.To encourage people to study music.D.To recognize the value of jazz.2.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?考点17 易A.Jazz becoming more accessible.B.The production of jazz growing faster.C.Jazz being less popular with the young.D.The jazz audience becoming larger.3.What can we infer about Moran’s opinion on jazz?考点17 中难A.It will disappear gradually.B.It remains black and white.C.It should keep up with the times.D.It changes every 50 years.4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? 考点17中难A.Exploring the Future of jazz.B.The Rise and Fall of jazz.C.The Story of a jazz Musician.D.Celebrating the Jazz Day.B【来源】2017年普通高等学校招生全国统一考试(新课标I)考点17中难A build-it-yourself solar still(蒸馏器) is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas where the liquid is not readily available. Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container—perhaps just a drinking cup — to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up — and out — the side of the hole.Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圆锥体) with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸发) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment out through the tube, and w on’t have to break down the still every time you need a drink.5What do we know about the solar still equipment from the first paragraph? 考点17 易A It’s delicate.B It’s expensive.C. But the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly. Already thisyear, 115 measles cases have been reported in the USA, compared with 189 for all of last year. The numbers might sound small, but they are the leading edge of a dangerous trend. When vaccination rates are very high, as they still are in the nation as a whole, everyone is protected. This is called “herd immunity”, which protects the people who get hurt easily, including those who KS5U can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons, babies too young to get vaccinated and people on whom the vaccine doesn’t work. But herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins in. When some refuse vaccination and seek a free ride, immunity breaks down and everyone is in even bigger danger. That’s exactly what is happening in small neighborhoods around the country from Orange County, California, where 22 measles cases were reported this month, to Brooklyn, N.Y., where a 17-year-old caused an outbreak last year. The resistance to vaccine has continued for decades, and it is driven by a real but very small risk. Those who refuse to take that risk selfishly make others suffer.Making things worse are state laws that make it too easy to opt out(决定不参加) of what are supposed to be required vaccines for all children entering kindergarten. Seventeen states allow parents to get an exemption(豁免), sometimes just by signing a paper saying they personally object to a vaccine. Now, several states are moving to tighten laws by adding new regulations for opting out. But no one does enough to limit exemptions.Parents ought to be able to opt out only for limited medical or religious reasons. But personal opinions? Not good enough. Everyone enjoys the life-saving benefits vaccines provide, but they’ll exist only as long as everyone shares in the risks. 9.The first two paragraphs suggest that ____________.考点17 易A.a small number of measles cases can start a dangerous trendB.the outbreak of measles attracts the public attentionC.anti-vaccine movement has its medical reasonsD.information about measles spreads quickly10.Herd immunity works well when ____________.考点17 易A.exemptions are allowedB.several vaccines are used togetherC.the whole neighborhood is involved inD.new regulations are added to the state laws11.What is the main reason for the comeback of measles? 考点17中难A.The overuse of vaccine.B.The lack of medical care.C.The features of measles itself.D.The vaccine opt-outs of some people.12.What is the purpose of the passage? 考点17 中难A.To introduce the idea of exemption.B.To discuss methods to cure measles.C.To stress the importance of vaccination.D.To appeal for equal rights in medical treatment.D【来源】辽宁省实验中学2017届高三第四次模拟考试考点17易Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life. In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all—whether rich or poor, clever or stupid—one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees refuse to do what they think to be "low" work, and, in fact, working with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor. We can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns. In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one's work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.13. According to the passage, the purpose of education is _____.考点17 易A. to build a perfect worldB. to choose a system of educationC. to let everyone receive education fit for himD. to prepare children mainly for their future work14. Nobody knew how he got to where he was because he was discreet about that. One night in October, Bobbitt was sitting roadside with a sign in Philadelphia as usual, when Kate McClure of Florence Township, N. An American professor discovered the difference while teaching a class in a Brazilian(巴西的) university. The two-hour class was scheduled to begin at 10 A.M. and end at 12. On the first day , when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. Many students came after 10:30 A.M. Two students came after 11 A.M. Although all the students greeted the professor as they arrived, few apologized(道歉)for their lateness. Were these students being rude? He decided to study the students’ behavior. The professor talked to American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informal and a formal situation:at a lunch with a friend and in a university class, respectively. He gave them an example and asked them how they would react,If they had a lunch appointment with a friend, the average American student defined lateness as 19 minutes after the agreed time. On the other hand, the average Brazilian student felt the friend was late after 33 minutes. In an American university, students are expected to arrive at the appointed hour.In contrast, in Brazil, neither the teacher nor the students always arrive at the appointed hour.Classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the United States, but also end at the scheduled time.In the Brazilian class, only a few students left the class at 12:00;many remained past 12:30 to discuss the class and ask more questions. While arriving late may not be very important in Brazil , neither is staying late.1.The word‘punctual’ most probably means________.考点17 易A.leaving soon after classing earlyC.arriving a few minutes lateD.being on time2.Why did the professor study the Brazilian students’ behavior?考点17 易A.He felt puzzled at the students’ being late.B.He felt angry at the students' rudeness.C.He wanted to make the students come on time later.D.He wanted to collect data for one of his studies.3.It can be inferred from the professor’s study of lateness in the informal situation that __________.考点17 易A.American students will become impatient if their friend is five minutes lateB.neither Brazilian nor American students like being late in social gatheringsC.being late in one culture may not be considered so rude in another cultureD.Brazilian students will not come thirty-three minutes after the agreed time4.What is the main idea of this passage?考点17 易A.It is important to be on time for class in the United States.B.The importance of being on time differs among cultures.C.People learn the importance of time only from their own culture.D.Students being late for class should explain the reason to their teacher.B(考点17中难)Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit (联系) groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialisation, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 languages; the Americas about 1,000; Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number (中位数) of speakers is mere 6,000, which means that half the world's languages are spoken by fewer people than that.Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction (消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico (150), Lipan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.5.What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times?考点17 易A.They developed very fast.B.They were large in number.C.They had similar patterns.D.They were closely connected.6.Which of the following best explains "dominant" underlined in paragraph 2?考点17 易plex.B.advanced.C.powerful.D.modern.7.What is the main idea of the text?A.New languages will be created.考点17 易B.People's lifestyles are reflected in languages.C.Human development results in fewer languages.D.Geography determines language evolution.C(考点17中难)Australia,the last continent, was discovered by ships belonging to some European nations in the seventeenth century, these nations were less interested in changing it into a colony(殖民地)than in exploring(勘探)it.As in the early history of the United States,it was the English who set up the settlements(新拓展地 ) in Australia. This history and the geography of these two British colonies have some other things in common as well.Australia and the United States are about the same in size, and their western lands are both not rich in soil.It was the eastern coast of Australia and America that the English first settled, and both colonies soon began to develop towards the west. However, this westward movement took place more because the English were searching for better land than because the population was increasing.Settlements of the western part of both countries developed quickly after gold was discovered in America in 1849and in Australia two years later.Although the development of these two countries has a lot in common, these are some striking differences as well. The United States gained its independence from England by revolution while Australia won its independence without having to go to war.Australia, unlike the United States, was firstly turned into a colony by English prisoners and its economic development was in wheat growing and sheep raising.By 1922,for example, Australia had fifteen times more sheep than it had people,or almost half as many sheep as the people there in the United States.Yet,in spite of theseand other main differences, Australia and the United States have more in common with each other than either one has with most of the rest of the world.8.Who turned Australia into a colony?考点17 易A.BritainB.Several European countries.C.The United States of America.D.None of the above.9.In the early history of America and Australia, both colonies developed towards the west firstly for the reason that______考点17 易A.the population was increasing rapidly in the eastB.the English thought there might be richer land thereC.gold was discovered thereD.fewer people lived there10.In the early 1920s______考点17 易A.Australia had one fifteenth as many people as sheepB.there were more sheep in Australia than in the United StatesC.the population in Australia was greater than that of the United StatesD.the United States had twice as many sheep as people11.The last sentence in the last p aragraph “Australia and the United States have more in common with each other than either one has with most考点17 中难A.the United States and Australia do not have any main differencesB.the United States and Australia have much more in common than they have with other countriesC.the United States and Australia have nothing in common with the rest of the worldD.in common with the rest of the world, the United States and Australia have a lot of differencesD(考点17易)Marco Polo was born in Italy in 1254. When he was 17 years old, he traveled across Europe and Asia with his father, who wanted to do trade with the Chinese. When they eventually arrived in Beijing, they were warmly welcomed by Kublai Khan, the Yuan Dynasty Emperor. He asked Marco to serve in his court and sent him to so many important tasks across the country.Marco Polo, in turn, was amazed by how beautiful and powerful China was. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. They also felt hungrier. When sleep was restricted, dieters produced higher levels of ghrelin, a hormone(荷尔蒙)that activates hunger and reduces energy consumption.“If your goal is to lose fat, skipping sleep is like putting sticks in your bicycle wheels,"said Penev,” in our study it reduced fat loss by 55 percent. The researchers followed 10 overweight volunteers.Participants were placed on an individualized, balanced diet, with calories restricted to 90 percent of what each needed to maintain his or her weight without exercise. Each participant was studied twice:once for 14 days in the laboratory with an 8.5 hours for sleep, and once for 14 days with only 5.5 hours for sleep. They spent their waking hours engaged in work. The volunteers lost an average of 6.6 pounds during each 14-day session,During weeks with adequate sleep, average of 1.3 pounds of fat and 5.3 pounds of fat-free mass.Getting adequate sleep helped control the dieters' hunger.Average levels of ghrelin did not change when dieters spent 8.5 hours in bed. When they spent 5.5 hours in bed, their ghrelin levels rose.“Higher ghrelin levels can reduce energy consumption, cause hunger and food intake, and promote maintenance(保持)of fat, ” the director notes.“The message for people trying to lose weight is clear,” Penev said.“We have evidence that the amount of sleep makes a big difference on the results of dietary interventions.”8.What can we know from Paragraph 1?A. According to Holowka, buildings account for 65 percent of total U. S. electricity use.But green buildings can reduce energy and water use. That could be good for the environment, because cars use lots of gas and give off pollution. Green buildings are often built on developed land. so that the buildings don’t destroy forests.Marty Dettling is project manger for a building that put these ideas into action. The Solaire has been called the country's first green high-rise building.According to Dettling,“We've reduced our energy use by one-third and our water by 50 percent.”The Solaire cuts energy in past by using solar power. “On the face of the building we have solar panels(太阳能电池板)which change the sun’s energy into electricity,” Dettling explained. The Solaire also has lights that automatically turn off when people leave the room. In addition, the building has lots of windows, allowing people to use the sun for light during the day. The Solaire cuts water reusing it. Not everyone is eager to move into a green building, however. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells Nationa l Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight(感悟) on how talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wid er context,” says Moran, “so I want to continuethose dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster.”1.Why did UNESCO set April 30 as International Jazz Day?A.To remember the birth of jazz.B.To protect cultural diversity.C.To encourage people to study music.D.To recognize the value of jazz.2.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?A.Jazz becoming more accessible.B.The production of jazz growing faster.C.Jazz being less popular with the young.D.The jazz audience becoming larger.3.hat can we infer about Moran’s opinion on jazz?A.It will disappear gradually.B.It remains black and white.C.It should keep up with the times.D.It changes every 50 years.4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.Exploring the Future of Jazz.B.The Rise and Fall of Jazz.C.The Story of a Jazz Musician.D.Celebrating the Jazz Day.2、 A buld-it-yourself solar still(蒸馏器) is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas where the liquid is not readily available. Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5' 5' sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container— perhaps just a drinking cup — to catch the water. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up — and out — the side of the hole.Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s ce nter down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圆锥体) with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates(蒸发) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment out through the tube, and won’t have to break down the still every time you need a drink.1.What do we know about the solar still equipment from the first paragraph?A.It's delicate.B.It's expensive.C.It's complex.D.It's portable.2.What does the underlined phrase “the water catcher” in paragraph 2 refe r to?A.The tube.B.The still.C.The hole.D.The cup.3.What’s the last step of constructing a working solar still?A.Dig a hole of a certain size.B.Put the cup in place.C.Weight the sheet's center down.D.Cover the hole with the plastic sheet.4.When a solar still works, drops of water come into the cup form .A.the plastic tubeB.outside the holeC.the open airD.beneath the sheet3、Measles(麻疹), which once killed 450 children each year and disabled even more, was nearly wiped out in the United States 14 years ago by the universal use of the MMR vaccine(疫苗). But the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly. Already this year, 115 measles cases have been reported in the USA, compared with 189 for all of last year. The numbers might sound small, but they are the leading edge of a dangerous trend. When vaccination rates are very high, as they still are in the nation as a whole, everyone is protected. This is called “herd immunity”, which protects the people who get hurt easily, including those who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons, babies too young to get vaccinated and people on whom the vaccine doesn’t work. Those who refuse to take that risk selfishly make others suffer.Making things worse are state laws that makeit too easy to opt out(决定不参加) of what are supposed to be required vaccines for all children enteringkindergarten. Seventeen states allow parents to get an exemption(豁免), sometimes just by signing apaper saying they personally object to a vaccine. Now, several states are moving to tighten laws by adding new regulations for opting out. But no one does enough to limit exemptions.Parents ought to be able to opt out only for limited medical or religious reasons. But personal opinions? Not good enough.Everyone enjoys the life-saving benefits vaccines provide, but they’ll existonly as long as everyone shares in the risks.1.The first two paragraphs suggest that ____________.A.a small number of measles cases can start a dangerous trendB.the outbreak of measles attracts the public attentionC.anti-vaccine movement has its medical reasonsrmation about measles spreads quickly2.Herd immunity works well when ____________.A.exemptions are allowedB.several vaccines are used togetherC.the whole neighborhood is involved inD.new regulations are added to the state laws3.What is the main reason for the comeback of measles?A.The overuse of vaccine.B.The lack of medical care.C.The features of measles itself.D.The vaccine opt-outs of some people.4.What is the purpose of the passage?A.To introduce the idea of exemption.B.To discuss methods to cure measles.C.To stress the importance of vaccination.D.To appeal for equal rights in medical treatment.4、Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all—whether rich or poor, clever or stupid—one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees refuse to do what they think to be “low” work, and, in fact, working with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor. We can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns. In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can dowhatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.1.According to the passage, the purpose of education is .A.to build a perfect worldB.to choose a system of educationC.to let everyone receive education fit for himD.to prepare children mainly for their future work2.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A.It’s hard for university graduates to find jobs.B.No one would like to do work with hands.cation is not enough to build a perfect nation.D.University graduates are ashamed of their work.3.In the writer’s opinion, .A.all the social problems can’t be solved by educationB.free education for all probably leads to a perfect worldC.free edu cation won’t help to solve social problemscation can settle all of the world’s problems二、语法填空1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
