Unit 6 Going westⅠ.Brief Statements Based on the UnitThe famous British novelist Defoe once wrote a novel Robinson Crusoe, which describes the main character’s survival on a deserted island for more than 27 years. The reason why he succeeded in surviving was that he had a strong will and perseverance, had the determination to overe difficulty and conquer nature. In the history of America, the famous“Going west” tells us the spirit and perseverance the explorers had when moving west. These are just the key to their success.Similarly,in 1925 a true historical event—when many children were in desperate need of vaccine, the sea was frozen, the planes were stored and there was no railway. So the only way would be a relay of dog teams.Twenty tough drivers with their dog teams rode day and night and took only 127 hours to plete the task. What impresses us most is those true heroes—dogs. All these moving stories will tell us the truth of life—when you quit, failure will happen. To go on unit you succeed is what life is all about. This is what we will learn from the unit.Besides, the students will learn some useful words and phrases provided by the materials. In Grammar, the students will review the Attribute by doing some concerned exercises. At the end, practise writing a story. In a short,we not only improve our integrating skills in using language by listening, speaking, reading and writing, but also learn the truth of life.Ⅱ.Teaching Goals1.Talk about perseverance and success.2.Practise talking about ability.3.Review the Attribute.4.Write a story.Ⅲ.Background InformationDiphtheriaNo bacterial disease of humans has been as successfully studied as diphtheria.Hippocrates provided the first clinical description of diphtheria in the 4th century B.C. There are alsoreferences to the disease in ancient Syria and Egypt. In the 17th century, murderous epidemics of diphtheria swept Europe;in Spain the disease became known as “El garatillo”(the strangler),in Italy and Sicily as“the gullet disease”.In the 18th century, the disease reached the American colonies where it reached epidemic proportions about 1735.Often,whole families died of the disease in a few weeks. For some years, beginning about 1910,TAT(a Toxin-Anti-Toxin plex)was used for active immunization against diphtheria.TAT had two undesirable characteristics as a vaccine.First, the toxin used was highly toxic.Second, the antitoxin mixture was horse serum. In 1929,Ramon demonstrated the conversion of diphtheria toxin to its nontoxic, but antigenic, equivalent(toxoid) by using formal dehyde. He provided humanity with one of the safest and surest vaccines of all time—the diphtheria toxoid. At the beginning of last century,in the United States, diphtheria was mon, occuring primarily in children, and was one of the leading causes of death in infants and children. In the 1920’s,when date were first gathered,in the United States there were approximately 150 000 cases and 13 000 deaths reported annually. After diphtheria immunization was introduced, the number of cases gradually fell to about 19 000 in 1945.When diphtheria immunization became widespread in the late 1940’s,a more rapid decrease in the number of cases and deaths occurred.Ⅳ.Teaching Time:Five periodsThe First PeriodTeaching Aims:1.Learn and master the following words Where did they live and what do youknow about their life?History counts many cases in which settlers moved into areas thatbelonged to other people. Can you give some examples? Whathappened? The new settlements in America soon became known as the Wild West. Why?If necessary give them some backgrounds:Westward Movement is a movement of people from the settled regionsof the United States to lands further west. Between the early 17thand late 19th centuries, Anglo-American peoples and their societiesexpanded from the AtlanticCoast to the PacificCoast. This westwardmovement, across what was often called the American frontier, wasof enormous significance. By expanding the nation’s borders toinclude more than three million square miles, the United Statesbecame one of the most powerful nations of the 20th century. However, this expansion also resulted in great suffering, destruction, andcultural loss for the Native Americans of North America. Thisexpansion also meant that much of North America was dominated byEnglish institutions and ways of life, instead of Spanish or Frenchones. The Spanish and French were also exploring and settling NorthAmerica in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. For good or ill, the Westward Movement of these Anglo-Americansettlers was one of the most influential forces to shape NorthAmerica history.Step 2. However, he should learn to face reality and solve the problems. As long as he overes the difficulties and never gives up, he will achieve his goals and succeed.〞 Moreover, he has dreams in his heart. As long as he insists on and makes unremitting efforts, I believe he will make his dreams e true some day. In fact, life itself is a battle. Natural environment and nature are your enemies. If you defeat them, you can live in the world, or it is death that is waiting for you. What can we learn from the text? From this text, I learn that during our lifetime, we may run into many difficulties.
