Fear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely t o feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are co ntracting(收缩)and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scient ists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contract ion and relaxation.Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School s aid:“Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we de al with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart.”The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fe ar as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel s aid,“The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when t he heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts c an also affect what we see and what we don't see—and guide whether we see fear.”To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner to show how the brai n influences the way the heart changes a person's feeling of f ear.“We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’ to each other to change our feelings and red uce fear,” Dr Garfinkel said.“We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fea r is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be a ble to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorde rs,and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress d isorder.”1.What is the finding of the study?A. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity; others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.I have taught many children who held the belief that their s elf-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other s kills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other hu man qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succe ed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are y oungsters who have suffered under competitive pressures fro m their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I oft en observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they alw ays have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter be cause I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by them selves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that wo uld mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth . Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitorswho try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with ot hers. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic a nd often troublesome fear begins to dissolve can we discover a new meaning in competition.【小题1】What does this passage mainly talk about? A.Competition helps to set up self-respect.B.Opinions about competition are different among people. C.Competition is harmful to personal quality development. D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition【小题2】Why do some people favor competition according to the pass age?A.It pushes society forward.B.It builds up a sense of duty.C.It improves personal abilities.D.It encourages individual efforts.【小题3】What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those wit h a desire to fail ?A.One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others.B.One’s success in competition needs great efforts. C.One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills. D.One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.【小题4】Which point of view may the author agree to? A.Every effort should be paid back.B.Competition should be encouraged.C.Winning should be a life-and-death matter.D.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son.Suddenly a crow perched on the tree near their window. The father asked his son, “What is this?”The son replied, “It is a crow.”After a few minutes, the father asked his son the second time, “What is this?”The son said, “Father, I have just now told you. It is a crow!”After a little while, the old father again asked his son the third time, “What is this?”“It’ s a crow, a crow, a crow!” said the son loudly.A little after, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this?”This time the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again?’ IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?”A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23times what it was, and I replied to him all 23times that it was crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question again and again for 23times. I did not at all feel annoyed; I rather felt affection for my innocent child.”5.What does the underlined word “perched” mean in the passage?A.knocked B.hitC.landed D.flew2.C【湖北省华中师范大学第一附属中学2017届高三上学期期中考试】BEIJING—The launch of a new manned space mission brings China closer to the establishment of a permanent space station, international experts say.Chinese taikonauts, Jing Haipeng, 50, and Chen Dong, 37, were blasted off into space onboard Shenzhou-11 at 7:30 am Monday and will spend 30 days in the Chinese space laboratory Tiangong-2. The launch marks a key step toward China's plan to eventually operate a permanent space station, The successful launch of the Shenzhou-11 spacecraft is another step forward to put China among leading players in space technology, said Alexander Zheleznyakov, a Russian expert on history of space flights. China's experimental space lab will help provide solutions for spacecraft of different functions to approach and anchor, and for a long-term operation of life support system, said Zheleznyakov. Shenzhou-11 is scheduled to anchor on Wednesday with Tiangong-2, which is part of China's plan to build a permanent space station by 2022.China can now test technologies for cargo spacecraft anchoring, life support system operation and waterrecycling to ensure a long-term continuous operation of its space station in the future with less dependence on renewal from the Earth, he said. If all goes well, China will launch the unpiloted Tianzhou-1cargo ship next spring to autonomously tie up with Tiangong-2. Tianzhou-1will be capable of automatically transferring rocket fuels, a vital requirement for space station grouping and maintenance, according to a report by Columbia Broadcasting System(CBS).“That will further their anchoring abilities needed for the larger space station,” Johnson Freese was quoted. “Tiangong-2 is supposed to be able to stay in orbit for two years or longer, so that's taking them (Chinese)really close to 2019 or so. I think this will be their last big technology test phase before going to their large space station,” said Freese.31.Which of the following can repl ace the underlined phrase “blasted off” in last paragraph?A.sent up B.gave away C.swept off D.carried away3.B【山东省枣庄市第三中学2017届高三9月质量检测】It has always been thought that alcohol causes people to put on weight because it contains a lot of sugar, but new research suggests a glass a day cold form part of a diet. Looking at past studies they found that, while heavy drinkers do put on weight; those who drink in moderation can actually lose weight.A spokesman for the research team at Navarro University in S pain says, “Light to moderate alcohol intake, especially of wine, may be more likely to protect against, rather than promote, weight gain.” The International Scientific Forum on Alcohol research reviewed the findings and agreed with most of the conclusions, particularly that data do not clearly indicate if moderate drinking increases weight.Boston University’s Dr. Harvey Finkel found that the biologic mechanisms(生物学机制)relating alcohol to changes in body weight are not properly understood. His team pointed out the strong protective effects of moderate drinking on the risk of getting conditions like diabetes(糖尿病), which relate to increasing obesity. Some studies suggest that even very obese people may be at lower risk of diabetes if they are moderate drinkers. The group says alcohol provides calories that are quickly absorbed into the body and are not stored in fat, and that this process could explain the differences in its effects from those of other foods. They agree that future research should be directed towards assessing the roles of different types of alcoholic drinks, taking into consideration drinking patterns and including the past tendency of participants to gain weight. For now there is little evidence that consuming small to moderate amounts of alcohol on a regular basis increases one’s risk of becoming obese. What’s more, a study three years ago suggested that resveratrol, a compound present in grapes and red wine destroys fat cells.25.The underlined phrase “in moderation” in the first paragraph me ans_________.A.excitedly B.carefully C.frequently D.properly4.【黑龙江省大庆实验中学2017届高三上学期期中考试】One form of social prejudice against older people is the belief that they cannot understand or use modern technology. Activities like playing computer games, going on the Net and downloading MP3s are only for the youngsters. Isn’t it unfair that older people enjoying a computer game should be frowned(皱眉)upon by their children and grandchildren?Nowadays older people have more control over their lives and they play a full part in society. Moreover, better health care has left more people in their sixties and seventies feeling fit and active after retirement. Mental activity, as well as physical exercise, can contribute to better health. Playing computer games is a very effective way of exercising the brain. When personal computers were first introduced, most older people didn’t believe they would ever familiarize themselves with it. Now computers have been around for a few generations and retired people have gradually become more relaxed about using them for fun. Gamers over 65 prefer playing puzzle games and card games. Kate Stevens, aged 72, says:“I find it very relaxing. It’s not very demanding, but you still need to concentrate.”Another development that has f avored “grey games” is a change in the type of videogames available on the market. There’s a greater variety of games to choose from, including more intellectual and complex strategy(策略)and simulation(模拟)games. Internet Chess and Train Simulator are among the most popular of these. Train Simulator is based on real-world rail activities. Players can choose from a variety of challenges, such as keeping to a strict-timetable and using helper engines during a winter storm. Some people argue that “grey gamers” simply don’t have the skills required for computer games, and that teenagers are better. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Most computer games require the kind of analytical thinking that improves with practice, which means that the “grey gamers” may well be far better than gamers half a century younger than them. In games where speed is the main consideration, older people would be at a disadvantage because they may have slower reaction times. On the other hand, “grey gamers” have a preference for slower paced, mind challenging games.4.By saying “This couldn’t be further from the truth.” in Paragraph 5, the author means_________.A.mind challenging games are not suitable for older peopleB.children should improve their skills with practiceC.playing computer games requires analytical thinkingD.older people can perform well in some computer games5.【黑龙江省双鸭山市第一中学2017届高三9月月考】One day a mime(哑剧演员)is visiting the zoo and tries to earn some money as a street performer. 高考英语复习阅读理解专练记叙文5篇Passage 1(2017课标全国Ⅱ,B)I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn’t want me for the film—it wanted somebody as well known as Paul—he stood up for me. I don’t know how many people would have done that;they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers. The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft(技艺) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other—but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core(核心) of our relationship off the screen. We shared the belief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back—he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn’t see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.I last saw him a few months ago. He’d been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn’t talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn’t need a lot of words.1.Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to the author at first?A.Paul Newman wanted it.B.The studio powers didn’t like his agent.C.He wasn’t famous enough.D.The director recommended someone else.2.Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship?A.They were of the same age.B.They worked in the same theater.C.They were both good actors.D.They had similar characteristics.3.What does the underlined word“that”in paragraph 3 refer to?A.Their belief.B.Their care for children.C.Their success.D.Their support for each other.4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A.To show his love of films.B.To remember a friend.C.To introduce a new movie.D.To share his acting experience.Passage 2(2017北京,A)It was a cold March day in High Point, North Carolina. The girls on the Wesleyan Academy softball team were waiting for their next turns at bat during practice, stamping their feet to stay warm. Eighth-grader Taylor Bisbee shivered(发抖) a little as she watched her teammate Paris White play. The two didn’t know each other well—Taylor had just moved to town a month or so before.Suddenly, Paris fell to the ground. “Paris’s eyes rolled back,”Taylor says. “She started shaking. I knew it was an emergency.”It certainly was. Paris had suffered a sudden heart failure. Without immediate medical care, Paris would die. At first, no one moved. The girls were in shock. Then the softball coach shouted out, “Does anyone know CPR?”CPR is a life-saving technique. To do CPR, you press on the sick person’s chest so that blood moves through the body and takes oxygen to organs. Without oxygen, the brain is damaged quickly.Amazingly, Taylor had just taken a CPR course the day before. Still, she hesitated. She didn’t think she knew it well enough. But when no one else came forward, Taylor ran to Paris and began doing CPR. “It was scary. I knew it was the difference between life and death,”says Taylor.Taylor’s swift action helped her teammates calm down. One girl called 911. Two more ran to get the school nurse, who brought a defibrillator, an electronic device(器械) that can shock the heart back into work. Luck stayed with them: Paris’s heartbeat returned.“I know I was really lucky,”Paris says now. “Most people don’t survive this. My team saved my life.”Experts say Paris is right: For a sudden heart failure, the single best chance for survival is having someone nearby step in and do CPR quickly.Today, Paris is back on the softball team. Taylor will apply to college soon. She wants to be a nurse. “I feel more confident in my actions now,”Taylor says. “I know I can act under pressure in a scary situation.”1.What happened to Paris on a March day?A.She caught a bad cold.B.She had a sudden heart problem.C.She was knocked down by a ball.D.She shivered terribly during practice.2.Why does Paris say she was lucky?A.She made a worthy friend.B.She recovered from shock.C.She received immediate CPR.D.She came back on the softball team.3.Which of the following words can best describe Taylor?A.Enthusiastic and kind.B.Courageous and calm.C.Cooperative and generous.D.Ambitious and professional.Passage 3(2017天津,B)Fifteen years ago, I took a summer vacation in Lecce in southern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a panoramic(全景的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees, I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama.Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera, a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate the view.Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take, I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so content in her observation. I didn’t want to mess with that.Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I look at it, I think her presence in the photo is what makes the image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is engaging with it.This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who “ruined”it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure is captured(捕捉) and frozen on some stranger’s bedroom wall? A bedroom, after all, is a very private space, in which some woman I don’t even know has been immortalized(使…… In some ways, she lives in my house.Perhaps we all live in each other’s spaces. Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us.That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass.1.What happened when the author was about to take a photo?A.Her camera stopped working.B.A woman blocked her view.C.Someone asked her to leave.D.A friend approached from behind.2.According to the author, the woman was probably .A.enjoying herselfB.losing her patienceC.waiting for the sunsetD.thinking about her past3.In the author’s opinion, what makes the photo so alive?A.The rich color of the landscape.B.The perfect positioning of the camera.C.The woman’s existence in the photo.D.The soft sunlight that summer day.4.The photo on the bedroom wall enables the author to better understand .A.the need to be close to natureB.the importance of private spaceC.the joy of the vacation in ItalyD.the shared passion for beauty5.The passage can be seen as the author’s reflections upon .A.a particular life experienceB.the pleasure of travelingC.the art of photographyD.a lost friendshipPassage 4(2017课标全国Ⅰ,B)I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. She had found a youngowl(猫头鹰)on the ground. When Iarrived, I saw a 2- to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.I examined the chick(雏鸟)and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree. The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down. Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise thepresence of chicks to adults;they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all!The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings.I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park. By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around. The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk populations—major food sources(来源)for the wolf—grew rapidly. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation(植被),which reduced plant diversity in the park. In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park’s red foxes, and completely drove away the park’s beavers. As early as 1966, biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets. The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone. Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone. Elk, deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.1.What is the text mainly about?A.Wildlife research in the United States.B.Plant diversity in the Yellowstone area.C.The conflict between farmers and gray wolves.D.The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park.2.What does the underlined word“displaced”in paragraph 2 mean?A.Tested.B.Separated.C.Forced out.D.Tracked down.3.What did the disappearance of gray wolves bring about?A.Damage to local ecology.B.A decline in the park’s income.C.Preservation of vegetation.D.An increase in the variety of animals.4.What is the author’s attitude towards the Yellowstone wolf project?A.Doubtful.B.Positive.C.Disapproving.D.Uncaring.

Hidden App, which takes pictures using the laptop's built-in camera, also supplied Mr. Del Torto with images of a woman, without a headscarf in a grey-walled room.He called the local police burglary squad(小组), who had previously dusted for fingerprints to no avail, and supplied them with details of the laptop's new location.Police told him that, at 3, 400 miles away, Tehran was some distance outside of their jurisdiction(司法权). He could have reported it to Interpol, but it would have been a low-priority case. It may not have even been investigated for several years. Without any real hope of getting it back, he published the photographs on a Tumblr blog, called Dom's Laptop Is in Iran, as an “amusing story for my friends to enjoy”.But Mr. Del Torto removed the images after being contacted by the Iranian family in question. They said they had bought the laptop in good faith, were upset by the story and were keen to return the device.“As the story circulated, I started to receive messages from concerned individuals warning of privacy issues and the possible harm and distress the blog may cause the people in the photos,” he wrote.“Then one of the people in the photos contacted me and asked me to remove the pictures. They were very upset.” Mr. Del Torto has now allowed the family to keep th e laptop “given the huge error of judgment” he made in “failing to respect their privacy”.1.How did Dom del Torto know the location of his stolen laptop?________A.Through an email from a friend in Iran.B.Through a software he installed in his laptop.C.Through the evidence given by the police.D.Through some photos on the web.2.Mr. Del Torto has now allowed the family to keep the laptop because ________.A.the family have apologized to him.B.the family explained how they got the laptop.C.the family much need the laptop.D.he is sorry for harming the privacy of the family.3.What do we know about the new owners of the laptop?________A.They stole the laptop from Dom del Torto.B.They didn't know the laptop was a stolen one.C.They refused to return the laptop.D.They were angry with Dom del Torto's posts.4.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?________A.Stolen Laptop Was Found.B.The Use of Hidden App.C.The Story of a Stolen Laptop.D.Stolen Laptop Spied on New Owners.BIt's a question we often think over, especially as we age: how many years do I have left? Thanks to Brazilian physician Claudio Gil Araujo, there's now a simple test you can perform right at home, in just a few seconds, that could predict how many years you have left to live.Araujo came up with the test after noticing that many of his patients, especially older ones, often have difficulty with simple feats of balance and strength, such as picking something up off the floor, or getting up out of a chair. Since balance and conditioning problems are known to aggravate the risk of dangerous falls and accidents, which might add chances to death, he wondered if a patient's flexibility, balance and strength could be used as a measure for life expectancy(寿命).Of course, the test also needed to be simple. If it required expensive equipment or measuring devices, the test probably wouldn't be accessible to many people. So Araujo developed the sitting-rise test, or SRT. It requires no equipment and can be performed within seconds. It's recommended that you wear comfortable clothing. Begin by standing upright in the middle of a room. Without using your arms or hands for leverage(杠杆装置), carefully squat(蹲) into a cross-legged sitting position. Once you're comfortable, attempt to stand back up from the sitting position — again, without using your arms for help. The test is scored on a point range between 1and 10.Each time you use an arm or knee for help in balancing during the test, you reduce one point from 10possible points. Half a point is reduced each time you lose balance. It seems like a pretty basic test of conditioning, but Araujo found that it could predict life expectancy with alarming accuracy. He tested it on over 2, 000 of his patients aged 51to 80, and found that people who scored less than 8points on the test were twice as likely to die within the next six years. Those who scored 3points or less were five times more likely to die within that same time period.Araujo's study was only performed on patients older than 50, so the results won't mean the same thing for younger individuals taking the test. But regardless of your age, the test should provide a useful benchmark(基准) for your overall health.5.What does the passage mainly talk about?________A.The relationship between habits and life expectancy.B.A simple test that could predict how long you will live.C.Activities you can do at home to build up your body.D.Some effective tips on how to live longer and better.6.The underlined word “aggravate” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”. A.limit B.defeatC.spread D.increase7.Which of the following is TRUE?________A.SRT can't involve any leverage for participants.B.SRT is to count the time one stands from his site.C.You should wear tight clothes for standing quickly.D.If you lose balance in the test, you will lose a lot of points.8.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A.people younger than 50 are also fit for doing the test.B.the fewer points one scored, the longer one might live.C.Claudio Gil Araujo's conclusion was based on many tests.D.Araujo planned to develop another test for younger individuals.Ⅲ. The greatest glory of living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time you fall. 文中不得透露个人姓名和学校名称.2017届高考英语专题练习(十五)语法填空+阅读理解+书面表达答案Ⅰ.A1.imagination 2.music 3.to calm 4.named 5.on 6.It7.but 8.interest 9.were 10.PlayingB1.lately 2.getting 3.Worse4.has been keeping 5.long 6.After7.of 8.a 9.Because 10.FindⅡ.1~5.BDBDB 6~8.DACⅢ.Life is full of ups and downs. Blind imitation (模仿)is self-destruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth . Imitation appears attractive: to those who know their strengt h. Imitation is unacceptable. In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first learned to cook, I used recipes (菜谱) and turned out some tasty dishes. But soon I grew bored. Why follow someone else’s way of cooking when I could creat e my own? Imitating role models is like using training wheels on a child’s bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying o n them.In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously (下意识地) hold poor role models. If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results o f the weak choices of others. In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off scree n, their personal lives may be disastrous. If you are going to f ollow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character o r unacceptable behaviors.Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to c reate something unique. Think of the movies, books, teachers , and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touche d you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, n ot desperation. The world is changed not by those who do wh at has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. Creative people have an endless reso urce of ideas. The problem a creator faces is not running out of material; it is what to do with the material knocking at the d oor of imagination.Syudy your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not server.
The oddness of life in space never quite goes away. Here are some examples.First consider something as simple as sleep. Its position presents its own challenges. The main question is whether you want your arms inside or outside the sleeping bag. If you leave your arms out, they float free in zero gravity, often giving a sleeping astronaut the look of a funny balled (芭蕾)dancer. “I’m an inside guy,” Mike Hopkins says, who returned from a six-month tour on the International Space Stat ion. “I like to be wrapped up.”On the station, the ordinary becomes strange. The exercise bike for the American astronauts has no handlebars. It also has no seat. With no gravity, it’s just as easy to pedal violently. You can watch a movie while you pedal by floating a microcomputer anywhere you want. But station residents have to be careful about staying in one place too long. Without gravity to help circulate air, the carbon dioxide you exhale (呼气) has a tendency to form an invisible (隐形的)cloud around you head. You can end up with what astronauts call a carbon-dioxide headache.Leroy Chiao, 54, an American retired astronaut after four flights, describes what happens even before you float out of your seat,”Your inner ear thinks your’re falling . Meanwhile your eyes are telling you you’re standing straight. That can be annoying—that’s why some people feel sick.” Within a couple days —truly terrible days for some —astronauts’ brains learn to ignore the panicky signals from the inner ear, and space sickness disappears.Space travel can be so delightful but at the same time invisibly dangerous. For instance, astronauts lose bone mass. That’s why exercise is considered so vital that National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) puts it right on the workday schedule. The focus on fitness is as much about science and the future as it is about keeping any individual astronauts return home, and, more importantly, how to maintain strength and fitness for the two and a half years or more that it would take to make a round-trip to Mars.1.What is the major challenge to astronauts when they sleep in space?A. Deciding on a proper sleep positionB. Choosing a comfortable sleeping bagC. Seeking a way to fall asleep quicklyD. Finding a right time to go to sleep.2.The astronauts will suffer from a carbon-dioxide headache when _____.A. the y circle around on their bikesB. they use microcomputers without a stopC. they exercise in one place for a long timeD. they watch a movie while pedaling3.Some astronauts feel sick on the station during the first few days because _____.A. their senses stop workingB. they have to stand up straightC. they float out of their seats unexpectedlyD. whether they are able to go back to the station4.One of the NASA’s major concerns ab out astronauts is _____.A. how much exercise they do on the stationB. how they can remain healthy for long in spaceC. whether they can recover after returning homeD. whether they are able to go back to the station2. The production of coffee beans is a huge, profitable business, but, unfortunately, full-sun production is taking over the industry and bringing about a lot of damage. The change in how coffee is grown from shade-grown production to full-sun production endangers the very existence of, certain animals and birds, and even disturbs the world’s ecological balance. On a local level, the damage of the forest required by full-sun fields affects the area’s birds and animals. The shade of the forest trees provides a home for birds and other special(物种) that depend on the trees’ flowers and fruits. Full-sun coffee growers destroy this forest home. As a result, many special are quickly dying out.On a more global level, the destruction of the rainforest for full-sun coffee fields also threatens(威胁)human life. Medical research often makes use of the forests' plant and animal life, and the destruction of such species could prevent researchers from finding cures for certain diseases. In addition, new coffee-growing techniques are poisoning the water locally, and eventually the world's groundwater. Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations (种植园)could mean the destruction of the rainforest ecology. The loss of shade treesis already causing a slight change in the world's climate, and studies show that loss of oxygen-giving trees also leads to air pollution and global warming. Moreover, the new growing techniques are contributing to acidic(酸性的) soil conditions. It is obvious that the way much coffee is grown affects many aspects many aspects of life, from the local environment to the global ecology. But consumers do have a choice. They can purchase shade-grown coffee whenever possible, although at a higher cost. The future health of the planet and mankind is surely worth more than an inexpensive cup of coffee.1. What can we learn about full-sun coffee production from Paragraph 4?A. It limits the spread of new growing techniques.B. It leads to air pollution and global warming.C. It slows down the loss of shade trees.D. It improves local soil conditions.2. But robins are in danger of wearing themselves out by singing too much. Robins are singing all night一as well as during the day, British-based researchers say.David Dominoni, of Glasgow University, said that light from street lamps, takeaway signs and homes is affecting the birds' biological clocks, leading to them being wide awake when they should be asleep.Dr Dominoni, who is putting cameras inside nesting boxes to track sleeping patterns, said lack of sleep could put the birds’ health at risk. His study shows that when robins are exposed to light at night in the lab, it leads to some genes being active at the wrong time of day. And the more birds are exposed to light, the more active they are at night. He told people at a conference, "There have been a couple of studies suggesting they are increasing their song output at night and during the day they are still singing. Singing is a costly behaviour and it takes energy. So by increasing their song output, there might be some costs of energy."And it is not just robins that are being kept awake by artificial light. Blackbirds and seagulls are also being more nocturnal. Dr Dominoni said, "In Glasgow where I live, gulls are a serious problem. I have people coming to me saying `You are the bird expert. Can you help us kill these gulls?'.During the breeding(繁殖)season, between April and June, they are very active at night and very noisy and people can't sleep."Although Dr Dominoni has only studied light pollution, other research concluded that robins living in noisy cities have started to sing at night to make themselves heard over loud noise. However, some birds thrive(兴旺)in noisy environments. A study from California Polytechnic University found more hummingbirds in areas with heavy industrial machinery. It is thought that they are capitalising on their predators(天敌)fleeing to quieter areas.1.According to Dr Dominoni's study, what cause robins to sing so much?A. The breeding season.B. Social robots are about to bring technology to the everyday world in a more humanized way, said Cynthia Breazeal, chief scientist at the robot company Jibo. While household robots today do the normal housework, social robots will be much more like companions than mere tools. For example, these robots will be able to distinguish when someone is happy or sad. This allows them to respond more appropriately to the user. The Jibo robot, arranged to ship later this year, is designed to be a personalized assistant. You can talk to the robot, ask it questions, and make requests for it to perform different tasks. The robot doesn’t just deliver general answers to questions; it responds based on what it learns about each individual in the household. It can do things such as reminding an elderly family member to take medicine or taking family photos.Social robots are not just finding their way into the home. They have potentialapplications in everything from education to health care and are already finding their way into some of these spaces.Fellow Robots is one company bringing s ocial robots to the market. The company’s “Oshbot” robot is built to assist customers in a store, which can help the customers find items and help guide them to the product’s location in the store. It can also speak different languages and make recommendations for different items based on what the customer is shopping for.The more interaction the robot has with humans, the more it learns. But Oshbot, like other social robots, is not intended to replace workers, but to work alongside other employees. “We ha ve technologies to train social robots to do things not for us, but with us,” said Breazeal.1. A new design idea of household robots.B. Marketing strategies for social robots.C. Information on household robots.D. An introduction to social robots.。
阅读理解B专练5篇Passage 1(2017江苏,B)Before birth, babies can tell the difference between loud sounds and voices. They can even distinguish their mother’s voice from that of a female stranger. But When it comes to embryonic learning(胎教), birds could rule the roost. As recently reported in The Auk:Ornithological Advances, some mother birds may teach their young to sing even before they hatch(孵化).New-born chicks can then imitate their mom’s call within a few days of entering the world. This educational method was first observed in 2012 by Sonia Kleindorfer, a biologist at Flinders University in South Australia, and her colleagues. Female Australian superb fairy wrens were found to repeat one sound over and over again while hatching their eggs. When the eggs were hatched, the baby birds made the similar chirp to their mothers—a sound that served as their regular“feed me!”call. To find out if the special quality was more widespread in birds, the researchers sought the red-backed fairy wren, another species of Australian songbird. First they collected sound data from 67 nests in four sites in Queensland before and after hatching. Then they identified begging calls by analyzing the order and number of notes. A computer analysis blindly compared calls produced by mothers and chicks, ranking them by similarity. It turns out that baby red-backed fairy wrens also emerge chirping like their moms. And the more frequently mothers had called to their eggs, the m ore similar were the babies’ begging calls. In addition, the team set up a separate experiment that suggested that the baby birds that most closely imitated their mom’s voice were rewarded with the most food. This observation hints that effective embryonic learning could signal neurological(神经系统的)strengths of children to parents. An evolutionary inference can then be drawn.“As a parent, do you invest in quality children, or do you invest in children that are in need?”Kleindorferasks.“Our results suggest that they might be going for quality.”1.The underlined phrase in Paragraph 1 means“”.A.be the worstB.be the bestC.be just as badD.be just as good2.What are Kleindorfer’s findings based on?A.Similarities between the calls of moms and chicks.B.The observation of fairy wrens across Australia.C.The data collected from Queensland’s locals.D.Controlled experiments on wrens and other birds.3.Embryonic learning helps mother birds to identify the baby birds which.A.can receive quality signalsB.are in need of trainingC.fit the environment betterD.make the loudest call答案[语篇解读]本文是一篇科普类说明文。

One moment it was quiet and calm in the forest, the next, the air was charged with tension. The elephant had heard the distant alarm calls of animals and her mood suddenly changed.I urged the elephant deeper into the forest. We sounded like a forest fire — crackling, snapping, trailblazing. But through all the noise came a sharp warning cry.The elephant stopped and we heard it again —the telltale call of a spotted deer.I looked quickly around the shadows of the forest.Rays of sunlight shone through tree branches, beneath which the patchwork (交错) of green plants and shadowswithinshadows would make tiger stripes (条纹) look more attractive.Apart from an occasional noise from the elephant's stomach, the forest was silent.Gradually, the tension slipped from our bodies. The elephant seized a nearby branch and put it into her mouth.I reached forward and gently moved my hand over the elephant's neck; there was a soft part, free of wrinkles and hairs, behind her ear. This was my fourth time to_sense_the_aura of the forest in Corbett, although I saw no tigers in the end.Located at the foot of the Himalayan mountains, Corbett is home to about 135 Bengal tigers, but the forest seemed to be guarding their whereabouts (出没处), a silent reminder of their secrecy and rarity.Still, I was happy enough touching the elephant behind the ear.If I had so desperately wanted to see a tiger, I could have gone to a zoo. After all, spotting tigers merely confirms their beauty; tracking them can make you aware of something more.1.Which of the following was a clear signal of alarm?A.The elephant stopped.B.A spotted deer called.C.The elephant seized a branch.D.The forest was silent for a while.2.The author begins his account of the tour in the forest mainlyby________.A.describing various soundsparing different animalsC.listing different activitiesD.introducing various plants3.What does the underlined part “to sense the aura” in Para.4 most probably mean?A.To see the diversity.B.To enjoy the scenery.C.To feel the atmosphere.D.To experience the freedom.4.How does the author feel after several visits to Corbett?A.Seeing a Bengal tiger is quite thrilling.B.It is very timeconsuming to travel in Corbett.C.It is really worthwhile to study the animals in Corbett.D.The process of finding Bengal tigers is most appealing.1.

Who, What, When, Where, Why和How有关,有时跟具体的数字,如长度、速度、距离、大小、尺寸等有联系。
Arthur Miller (1915-2005) is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century. Miller‟s father had moved to the USA from Austria Hungary, drawn like so many others by the “Great American Dream”.However, he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early l930s.Miller‟s most famous play, De ath of a Salesman, is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. Benjamin was black, but he was not a slave. He and his mother and his grandmother were free.Benjamin‟s grandmother came from England. In America she got a job and worked for many years to pay for her boat trip across the ocean. After working many more years, she saved enough money to buy a farm. Benjamin lived with her for a while. She taught him to read and write and do arithmetic. Benjamin‟s neighbors knew that he was clever. They were not surprised when he built a large wooden clock. He made each piece after studying a small pocket watch. The clock made him famous, for it was one of the first clocks built in America. People from other places began to send hard problems of all kinds for Benjamin to settle.Thomas Jefferson learned of Benjamin Banneker‟s ability to settle hard problems. He asked Banneker to help build the city that was to be the capital of the United States—Washington, D.C.Banneker worked hard on the plans for the city. He markedwhere the streets and buildings—the Capital (国会大厦), the White House, and many others─should be built.Later, L‟Enfant, the Frenchman who had designed the new city, had a quarrel, and went back to France in anger. He took all of the plans with him. The workmen couldn‟t build without any plans to follow. For a while it seemed that the plans for the capital might have to be changed. But Benjamin Banneker remembered the plans he had helped draw. When you listen, they can make you happy or sad, peaceful or angry. They can make you relax or want to get up and dance. Gifted singers have the power to affect us in many ways—emotionally, physically and mentally. But becoming a gr eat singer isn‟t as easy as listening to one. It takes practice, devotion and strong lungs! Just ask the well known American opera(歌剧)star Carol Vaness. At the Metropolitan Opera in New York City where she often sings, Carol‟s voice must be loud enough to be heard by four thousand people. It must reach every person in the theater, without a microphone, even when she‟s singing softly. The reason Carol can project her voice that far is the way she breathes.“When you breathe, it‟s like a swimmer taking a deep breath before going underwater,” Carol explains. “You have to take a lot of air into your lungs.”According to Carol, the main difference between pop singing and opera is “how you breathe, how much air you take in, and how you control it coming out. Regular singing is more like speaking, and it‟s a lot softer. When I sing for children, they‟reoften surprised by how the vibrations strike their ears—like waves on a beach, ” Carol says. “In opera, the air doesn‟t just go out of your mouth—it vibrates in your chest, the way a guitar vibrates when it‟s played.”Ever since she started piano lessons at the age of ten, Carol has loved music. As she got older, she decided to become a music teacher. When she went to college, she took singing lessons as part of her studies. Her voice teacher discovered that nineteen year old Carol had an exceptionally beautiful soprano voice—the highest singing voice for women.Carol decided to make opera her goal, not only because she loved to sing but also because she loved the drama. Opera isa play in which the characters sing the words instead of speaking them. The stories of opera can be tragic or comical. They can be personal stories about two people falling in love or grand stories about kings and queens who lived long ago.
