The American Character
1.Success as a goal and materialism are among the underlying factors that make up the American Character.
a. success as a goal
One thing almost everyone is agreed on, including Americans, is that they place a very high valuation upon success. A good many things contributed to this accent on success. For example, there was the Puritan belief in the virtue of work, both for its own sake and because the rewards it brought were regarded as signs of God's love. All over America the lawyers, doctors, professors and politicians with Italian, Irish, German or Polish names testify to the urgency of success.
4. the spirit of independence
American children begin to sleep in another room when they are six months old. Every morning, you can see a boy around eleven or twelve-year-old, handing out newspapers door to door. What’s more, some little girls go to neighbour’s house to look after their children. We can see the vast majority of American grownups choose their own life, their professional career, choose their own fiancé e['fi:ɑ:nsei] or fiance.
Another
a. Money is rarely cherished for itself in America; it is rather a symbol and a tool. Look at the Who's Who entry for any prominent business man, and you are likely to find him involved in an amazing number of committees and associations organized for the public good.
6. desire to start a new life in a new place
They are easily adaptable to a new environment, so the desire to start a new life in a new place is noticeable throughout the nation. About 40 million Americans change residences every year. The average American moves fourteen times in his life time, compared to five moves for the average Japanese. The highly mobile American society leaves individuals with feeling of rootless, isolation, indifference to community welfare and shallow personal relationships.
2.the spirit of pioneering
In the mid-nineteenth century, the pioneering spirit led American settlers to travel westward by the thousands in search of land and gold. This movement has never ceased.
8. humor
The sense of humor is often the most revealing aspect of a culture. Surely humor has never been valued more highly in any civilization than in America. The minister uses it in his sermons, the doctor in his healing, the lawyer in his pleading, the teacher in his teaching. Mark Twain, in many ways our most representative writer, is admired not so much because of his skill at picturing American life as for his humor.
