But can GM technology solve world hunger problems? Even if it would, is it the best solution?Despite what it promises, GM technology actually has not increased the production potential of any crop. In fact, studies show that the most widely grown GM crop, GM soybeans, has suffered reduced productivity. For instance, a report that analyzed nearly two decades of research on major GM food crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop production.Something else, however, has been on the rise, While GM seeds are expensive, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits by saving money on pesticides (杀虫剂). On the contrary, US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall increase in pesticide use compared to traditional crops. “The promise was that you could use less chemicals and boost production. But neither is true,” said Bill Christison, President of the US National Far m Coalition. At the same time, the authors of the book World Hunger: Twelve Myths argue that there actually is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is not caused by production, but by problems in food distribution and politics. These indeed deserve our efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices results from the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a 2008 World Bank report. As a matter of fact, scientists see better ways to feed the world. Another World Bank report concluded that GM crops have little to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are available, among which “green” farming is supposed to be the first choice.28. The author develops the second paragraph mainly .A. by classificationB. by comparisonC. by exampleD. by process29.What does the underlined word “boost ” in the third paragraph probably mean?A. control.B. evaluateC.increase D.. obtain.30. GM companies promise farmers that they will benefit from ______________.A. use of less chemicalsB. practicing “green” farmingC. fair distribution of their cropsD. using more crops for fuel31. Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards GM technology?A. OptimisticB. DefensiveC.Casual D. DisapprovingD(NEW YORK) A French tourist highly praised for rescuing a two-year-old girl in Manhattan said he didn’t think twice before diving into the freezing East River. On the contrary, US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall increase in pesticide use compared to traditional crops.“The promise was that you could use less chemicals and boost production. But neither is true,” said Bill Christison, President of the US National Farm Coalition. The author develops the second paragraph mainly .A. by classificationB. by comparisonC. by exampleD. by process29.What does the underlined word “boost ” in the third paragraph probably mean?A. control.B. evaluateC.increase D.. obtain.30. John changed to our school from Greece, and seemed to be interested in sports, so I encouraged him to join our track team. I explained to him that even though he had never taken part in it before, I did believe that he could do well in any event, and I would be willing to coach him at whichever ones interested him. He accepted the offer, and began to work hard at every practice.About a month later, I had found out from other sources that John was a first-class tennis player, winning various junior awards in his home country. I went to him asking, "John, I really appreciate that you came out for the track team, but why didn't you play tennis instead? It seems that would interest you a lot more, sinceyou're so good at it." John answered, "Well, I like tennis, but you told me that you believed in me, and that you thought I could do well in track, so I wanted to try it for that reason."From then on, I often remember my student's reply. I told it to a friend and she suggested I write it down to share somewhere with more teachers. No matter how critical (不满的) students can be of them-selves, I've found that a simple "I trust that you can do it!" can go a long way!25. According to Paragraph 1, the author seems to think more about John's ________A. PE marksB. self-confidenceC. interest in sportsD. state of health26. Why did John take part in the track team?A. He had been an excellent runner.B. He was encouraged by his teacher.C. He liked running more than tennis.D. He had no tennis coach to train him.27. The purpose of this passage is probably _____.A. to build a close teacher-student relationshipB. to introduce a new way of sports trainingC. to explain the value of sports and gamesD. to show the importance of encouragement28. The passage is mainly written for _____.A. teachersB. parentsC. studentsD. playersC"How are you?" is a nice question. It's a friendly way that people in the United States greet each other. But "How are you?" is also a very unusual question. It's a question that often doesn't need an answer. The person who asks "How are you?" hopes to hear the answer "Fine", even if the person's friend isn't fine. The reason is that "How are you?" isn't really a question and "Fine" isn't really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying "Hello" or "Hi".Sometimes, people also don't say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks "Do you agree?" the other person might think, "No, I disagree. I think you're wrong…" But it isn't very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say "I'm not sure." It's a nicer way to say that you don't agree with someone.People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says "I have to go now." Often, the person who wants tohang up gives an excuse: "Someone's at the door." "Something is burning on the stove." The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person. Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people don't say exactly what they are thinking. It's an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it's part of the game of language.29. When a person in the United States asks "How are you?, he or she wants to hear " _______".A. How are you?B. Hello.C. I don't know.D. Fine.30. When a person disagrees with someone, it is polite to say "_______".A. You're wrong. I disagree.B. I'm not sure.C. I'm sure I disagree.D. No, I disagree.31. When a person says "I have to go now" "Someone's at the door", the person may be _______.A. giving an excuseB. hurting someone's feelingC. ill in bedD. asking you a question32. What does the rule of the game of language probably mean?A. Be polite.B. Don't disagree with people.C.Always say what you mean.D. Never say exactly what you are thinking.DWhen other nine-year-old kids were playing games, she was working at a petrol station. Her mother had AIDS and died when Liz was just l5 years old. The effect of that LOSS became a turning point in her life. Connecting the environment in which she had grown up with how her mother had died, she decided to do something about it.Liz went back to school.
