孝文化是中国传统文化的重要组成部分。

孝的观念，要远远早于孔子时代。

其二，在现有物质条件下，满足父母的生活所需，尽到赡养的义务，使父母吃得饱，穿得暖，生病时得到治疗，年老体弱时，生活起居有人照料。
二十四孝故事中有不少在物质条件非常困难的情况下赡养、孝顺父母的例子。
其三，在中国传统的观念里，“孝”更多地包含一种情感或态度在里面，故有“孝顺”“孝敬”等词语组合。
其四，在《论语·为政》中，孔子谈到孝时说：“生，事之以礼；死，葬之以礼，祭之以礼。
”以上三个层面讲的是父母活着时要事之以礼，孝的第四个层面即是父母去世之后应“葬之以礼，祭之以礼”，即按照当地的风俗礼节埋葬、祭奠去世的父母。
