This provides a quick review of the head positioning in front of the camera.6 3 54214 Head modelDisplays head position as tracked by the Nx Head Tracker device or yourcomputer camera. The color of the head model indicates the current quality of headtracking.∙Blue: Tracking rate is satisfactory.∙Gray: Tracking rate is too low, less than 20 frames per second. (Ifyou are using your computer’s camera for head tracking, this isusually due to poor lighting conditions).See the final section of this guide (p. 10 below for details instructions onhow to improve head tracking performance).5 PresetsThree presets are available, letting you control the level of the Nx effect:∙Voice: Minimum effect, most suitable for voice conversations.∙Multimedia: Medium effect, suitable for most content includingmusic, movies, games.∙Movie Theater: Maximum effect, most suitable for movies andgames when you want to experience the Nx effect maximally.Click on the Presets button to switch between the presets.6 Settings MenuPress this button to access the Nx settings window.Settings WindowCameraSets which camera Nx uses for head tracking.Output DevicesSets which audio playback device the Nx audio is sent to. Connect yourheadphones to the physical output of this device.Buffer SizeDetermines the amount of time (in samples) allotted to audio processing. Asmaller value provides quicker response times and lower latency. However, when buffer size is set too low, CPU-related drops or clicks may occur. In such cases, you may want to increase the buffer size.PersonalizationUse the Personalization section to enter information about yourhead dimensions: your head circumference and the distancebetween your ears (“Inter-Aural Arc”). Entering these measurementswill result in optimal Nx experience.Default settings are based on average adult head size, but since headsizes vary between individuals, it’s advised to adjust the settings toyour personal dimensions.Measurement Ranges∙Circumference: 35–75 cm (14.8–29.5 inches), Default: 55 cm / 21.6 in∙Inter-Aural Arc: 15–40 cm (6.9–15.75 inches), Default: 25 cm / 9.8 inHow to Measure Your Head:Use a measuring tape to measure the full circumference of your head, over theback of the head, just above the ears, and over the eyebrows. Enter thismeasurement in the Circumference box (in either centimeters or inches).Next, measure the semi-circumference from ear to ear (from one ear canalentrance to the other, around the back of the head. Enter this measurement inthe Inter-Aural Arc box.3. Head TrackingHead tracking greatly enhances the 3D audio experience. By tracking your head movements and adjusting the audio to the direction and orientation of your head, Nx reconstructs more realistically the three-dimensional audio experience of sounds coming at you from external sources in the real world.Head tracking can be done in two ways: using your computer’s camera, or using the Nx Head T racker.3.1 Tips for Optimal Performance When Using the CameraIf you are using the Nx Head Tracker device, you should have no issues with head tracking performance. If you are using the computer’s camera for head tracking, the head tracking rate may be come low under certain conditions. If the head tracking rate is too low to maintain proper orientation, the head model on the main Nx window will be displayed in gray. To increase the head tracking rate, try these solutions:∙Improve lighting conditions.∙Click on the Camera Preview button.∙Make sure that your face is well-lit and not shadowed. You may need to tilt the camera up a bit to increase light exposure to the face.If the Nx application regularly loses track of your head:∙Click on the Camera Preview button.∙Position the camera closer and straight in front of you.∙Remove sunglasses, hat, or anything covering your face.∙Improve lighting conditions.∙Don’t go beyond +/-30 degrees off the center axis.∙Make sure you’re within 1.2 meters/ four (4) feet from the camera.3.2 Using the Nx Head TrackerAttachingAfter you insert a standard AAA battery into the Nx Head Tracker, position thedevice at the top-center of the headphone arc, with the Nx logo facing forwards(battery in the back). The Nx Head Tracker will not track your head movementsproperly if you place it off-center or facing backwards.Wrap the strap around the headphone arc and attach it to the hook on the otherside. The strap can be disconnected at both ends for replacement: any standardrubber band can be used if needed.Button FunctionsA short press (under two seconds) in any state will place the unit in advertising mode. Inthis mode, the device can be detected and paired with your computer.A long press (over two seconds) will place the unit in sleep mode and disconnect it.BatteryThe device works with any standard AAA battery, providing approximately 40 hours ofwork. Replace the battery through the bottom hatch. The device will go to sleepautomatically after a period of time if it is not connected or not moving. In sleep mode, the battery life can last for months.LED IndicationsSleep LED offAdvertising Blinks blueConnecting Solid blueConnected Blinks blue every 15 secondsLow Battery Red instead of blueIdentifying Blinks whiteUpdating Blinks greenNx Head Tracker System RequirementsOS X:OS X 10.9.5d–10.11.5Windows:Windows 8.1 64-bitWindows 10 64-bitPlease Note: Windows 7 is not supported (no BLE support).Bluetooth compatibility:Bluetooth 4.0 or higher, with BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) compatibility. Please Note: Not all Bluetooth systems have BLE. If Bluetooth is off, go to System Preferences > Bluetooth and click on ‘Turn Bluetooth On’.WindowsIn order for the Head Tracker to connect with the Waves Nx app, you must first pair the device through Windows Bluetooth Devices settings.1.Open the Bluetooth Devices Settings menu via Start menu > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth2.Press the button on top of your Nx Head Tracker3.You should now see a device named: ‘Nx Tracker Ready to pair’.4.Click on it and select ‘Pair’Note: This process has to be done only before the initial connection to your computer. If you disconnect the Nx Tracker device from the Bluetooth settings menu you will need to pair it again.Basic instructions and guidelines (Windows and OS X):1.Open the Waves Nx app, click on the Settings icon and choose Nx Tracker.2.Press the button on top of your Nx Head Tracker.3.The Head Tracker should now connect to Waves Nx and the head model should turn blue.4.Move your head around, and watch the head model in the app window move in sync with yourmovements.5.Position yourself in front of the computer, and press the Sweet Spot. This will now be your centerposition.6.Play a song, watch a movie, or play a game with Nx on.7.Take a few minutes to let your ears adjust to the effect.8.To get the most out of Nx, it is highly recommended that you set the values in the Personalizationsection to your own individual head measurements. For detailed information on how to do this andwhy, read below. If you choose not to enter your personal head measurements, it is recommendedthat you stick with the default values, which are the average for the human population. Radicaldepartures from the recommended values will seriously distort the effect. Disconnecting the Nx Head TrackerTo preserve battery, your Nx Head Tracker will automatically shut down after standing still for 10 minutes. You can also turn it off by holding the button for more than 2 seconds3.3 Advantages of the Nx Head Tracker vs. the Camera∙The Nx Head Tracker is faster and more accurate, providing a much smoother tracking experience than a computer camera.∙With a webcam, you are limited to using Nx on a stationary device, for example a desktop computer, and you must be facing the camera at all times. With the Nx Head Tracker you can track your headmovements while you are moving around, for example using a mobile device.∙ A webcam can track your head movements in ±30 degrees only. The Nx Head Tracker can track them in full 360 degrees.∙With a webcam, only one user can use Nx software at a time; with the Nx Head Tracker, several users (each with his or her own Nx Head Tracker device) can experience Nx simultaneously on the sameaudio source.∙CPU consumption is lower when using the Nx Head Tracker when compared to using the webcam.∙Battery consumption is lighter when using the Nx Head Tracker. Here’s a more detailed compa rison:Nx Head Tracker Webcam For Use with Both stationary and mobile devices Stationary devices only (desktop or laptop) CPU Consumption Low HighTracking Angle 360° (full sphere) 60° (+/-30°)Tracking Speed (RefreshRate)50 frames per second (fps) Up to 30 fps in good lighting conditionsLighting Does not require lighting Sensitive to lighting conditionsDistance from YourDevice Approx. 10-20 feet, depending onBluetooth range3-6 feet, depending on lens field-of-view angleTracking Orientation andPosition 3 degrees of freedom: orientation only(yaw/pitch/roll)6 degrees of freedom: orientation(yaw/pitch/roll) + position (XYZ)。
Waves VU Meter
VU meters remain popular with engineers because they make sense. You measure what you care about rather than endless peaks. This gives you a more realistic understanding of the dynamics of your mix. Trust your VU meters and your levels will be comfortable—and there will be ample headroom which makes for better mastering. This doesn’t mean that you can forgo full-scale metering; you still have to avoid clips. For that, you need peak meters. But try a mix with only VU meters and you’ll likely experience a new, intuitive relationship with the dynamics of your mix.

Available in both mono and stereo configurations, it performs four different dynamics processing functions: gating, low level compression, leveling, and compression.Combining several acclaimed Waves dynamics processing technologies, MaxxVolume packs a lot of audio processing power while consolidating several controls under a small set of simple faders. Each of the dynamics functions is controlled by one or two faders for simplicity and straightforward operation. The left side of the plug-in interface (to the left of the Energy Meter) handles low gain or low signal level audio. The right side of the interface handles high signal level functions.Low Level CompressorThe Low Level Compression function is controlled by a pair of faders: Threshold, which sets the threshold under which low level compression starts, and Gain, which sets the amount of gain applied to the compressed portion of the signal.Low Level Compression can be explained in simple terms as the opposite of standard or high level compression. In a standard compression setting, any signal above the set threshold gets compressed and attenuated. With a low level compressor, any signal that goes below the set threshold gets compressed upward, resulting in increased gain. The dynamic range is thus compressed, pushing low levels up while leaving high levels as they were.If you are familiar with compression curves, low level compression looks like this (curve marked in red):GateThe Gate function is controlled by a single fader that sets the gating threshold. The gate applies gentle downward expansion, affecting any signal below the threshold.LevelerThe Leveler function, also known as auto-gain control (AGC), is controlled by the Leveler fader which sets its threshold and target. A Leveler is used to maintain constant levels over long segments of audio. Essentially, a Leveler is a compressor set to very long attack and release times, making it react to the “forest” and not each individual “tree”. A Leveler can also be viewed as an RMS compressor.MaxxVolume’s Leveler smoothly and transparently gain-rides any signal that exceeds its threshold, bringing it back down as close as possible to the desired target level (the threshold). High Level CompressorMaxxVolume’s High Level Compression function is comprised of compression with automatic makeup gain and output level control. The Compressor function is similar to that of Waves Renaissance Vox. The compressor is controlled by the Threshold fader, which sets the amount of desired dynamic range compression. An automatic gain makeup function compensates for gain reduction resulting from the applied compression. The Gain fader determines the maximum output signal level.MaxxVolume Interface and FunctionsThe MaxxVolume interface is organized around the central Energy Meter. The controls are laid out so that Low Level signal functions are on the left side of the interface, while High Level signal functions are on the right side of the interface.Low Level Compression, Gating, Leveling, and High Level Compression can each be turned on or off individually using the on/off buttons located on their respective faders, as shown below:Energy MeterDisplays the audio signal’s level after the Leveler’s processing function, and before the other dynamics processing functions.Range:0 to -96dBLow Level Compression – ThresholdSets the threshold below which low level soft-knee compression starts. The fader’s position is displayed by a hairline indicator on the Energy Meter. The fader supports an on/off button for low level compression.Range: 0 to -96dBLow Level Compression – GainControls the maximum amount of gain makeup and compression applied to the signal below the Threshold. Note that applying gain values that are higher than the Threshold value will result in a signal exceeding 0dB or clipping.Range: 0to +48dBLow Level Compression – Gain MeterDisplays the amount of low-level makeup gain.Range: 0to +48dBGateSets the level below which gating (downward expansion) is applied. The fader supports an on/off button for gating.Range: 0 to -96dBLoud/SoftChanges the ARC release times between:Loud - shorter and more aggressive release resulting in louder output signal.Soft – longer release times resulting in softer output signal.Range: Soft/LoudLevelerSets both the threshold above which leveling is applied, and the target to which the audio signal is leveled. To compensate for gain reduction caused by the Leveler, use the High Level Compressor function. The fader supports an on/off button for leveling.Range: 0 to -48dBHigh Level Compression – Gain Reduction MeterDisplays the amount of high-level gain reduction or attenuation.Range: 0to -48dBHigh Level Compression – ThresholdControls the compressor threshold, setting the amount of potential dynamic range compression. As you pull the fader down, automatic makeup gain corresponding to the resulting attenuation is applied to the signal. The fader’s position is displayed by a hairline indicator on the Energy Meter. The fader supports an on/off button for high level compression.Range: 0 to -48dBHigh Level Compression – GainControls the maximum output level.Range: 0 to -48dBOutput MeterDisplays the plug-in’s output level, including peak and clip (signal exceeding 0dB) indication. Range: 0 to -96dBThe Waves System BarAll Waves plug-ins share a common feature, the Waves System Bar, which takes care of most administrative functions you will encounter while working with Waves plug-ins. Since the WavesSystem Bar is essentially the same on all Waves plug-ins, you will always know how to file, compare, load and copy the parameters of a Waves plug-in, even if you have never worked withthat particular processor.Commands common to all Waves plug-ins:Undo Undoes the last performed action.Redo Redoes the last undone action. There are 32 levels of undo and redo.Setup A/B Toggles between two sets of parameters within the same processor. This isuseful when comparing different parameter settings in order to achieve optimalresults.A->B Copies the current settings to the second setup register.Load Allows recalling presets from files. Once a file is selected, its first preset will load and become active. Other presets in the file will be listed under the preset’sname in the Load menu. You can also load factory presets and user presets(saved using “Save into preset menu.”)Save Used for saving presets in the Waves file format (.xps)There are two options for saving:Save to new file: creates a new .xps file wherein multiple presets can besaved.Save into preset menu: saves the preset into the default list of the plug-in.Pressing the ? button will open the manual for the plug-in you are using.。
