2023-2024学年安徽省合肥市第一中学高三上学期第一次教学质量检测英语试题Generations of creators have improved our lives with everything that touches off our imagination. Here are some of the brilliant inventors.Ellen Swallow Richards (1842 — 1911)After earning a bachelor’s degree from Vassar College in 1870, Richards was accepted as a “special student”at all-male MIT, becoming the first woman in the United States to attend a science school. She conducted a huge survey of water quality in Massachusetts, an effort that led to the first state water-quality standards in US.Gregor Mendel (1822 — 1884)In the mid-1800s, he experimented with pea plants to determine how physical features pass from one generation to the next. The experiments established the basic rules needed to cross-breed (杂交繁殖) plants to create a new variety with desired characteristics.Ray Kroc (1902—1984)As the founder of McDonald’s restaurants, Kroc changed the way Americans eat. In 1954, Kroc w as selling industrial mixers and visited the California restaurant of two of his best customers, Maurice and Richard McDonald. Kroc was impressed by the methods the brothers used to make their hamburgers, cheeseburgers, French fries, and milkshakes.Kroc, an Illinois native, talked the McDonalds into allowing him to create a group of drive-in hamburger restaurants using their methods and name. The first of his restaurants opened in Des Plaines, Illinois, on April 15, 1955.Jane Jacobs (1916—2006)Jacobs w as not a formally trained urban planner and didn’t have a college degree, but her intelligent views on community planning changed the way Americans thought about cities. In her 1961 book, Death and Life of Great American Cities, Jacobs advocated human-friendly neighborhoods featuring short city blocks and mixed-use buildings that encouraged resident interaction. She also strongly opposed high-rise developments and expressways that cut through neighborhoods.1. What did Gregor Mendel do?A.He found a new fast food making method.B.He discovered the basic cross-breeding laws.C.He established the water-quality standards in US.D.He helped to plan human-friendly neighborhoods.2. Who is the founder of McDonald’s restaurants?A.Ray Kroc. B.Jane Jacobs.C.Richard McDonald. D.Maurice McDonald.3. When did Jane Jacobs publish Death and Life of Great American Cities?A.In 2006. B.In 1984. C.In 1961. D.In 1916.On July 11, 2023, scientists selected Crawford Lake in Canada to represent the start of the Anthropocene, a new geological (地质的) time period dominated by human beings instead of the force of nature. The scientists said that sediments (沉积物) at the bottom of the lake clearly show the impact of industrialized humanity on Earth from the 1950s onwards. The Anthropocene Working Group (AWG) was set up in 2009. In 2016, it concluded that human-caused changes to Earth were so great that a new geological time unit was necessary. The AWG then assessed twelve sites across the world as candidates for what geol ogists call a “golden spike”, the place where the sudden and global changes marking the start of the new geological time period are best recorded in Earth. After three rounds of voting, the AWG selected Crawford Lake.“The lake is 24 meters deep but covers only 6 acres,” said Francine McCarthy, a member of the AWG. “It is so special that the bottom waters and surface waters do not mix, except for what gently sinks to the bottom and settles down in sediments. As a result, they allow us to see the changes in Earth history.”The AWG has chosen the plutonium isotopes (钚同位素) from H-bomb tests as the key marker for the Anthropocene, as they were spread globally from 1952 but declined rapidly after the nuclear test ban in the mid-1960s, creating a spike in sediments. There are other important markers in the lake sediments, including CO2 fingerprints produced by the burning of fossil fuels in power plants.“The 1950s saw the start of a sharp increase in industrial, transport and economic activities that have had huge impacts on Earth,” added McCarthy. “But it is the sharp increase in plutonium specifically that we chose as the key marker.”Experts said the decision has social and political importance, as it would draw attention to the role that industrialized humanity plays in shaping Earth. The climate crisis is the most obvious impact of the Anthropocene, but huge losses of wildlife, the spread of foreign species, and the widespread pollution of the planet are also key features.4. Why is Crawford Lake selected as th e “golden spike”?A.It can best show the sudden and global changes in Earth.B.It is close to the testing site of the first nuclear bomb.C.It can completely separate its sediments from the air.D.It is located in one of the most industrialized countries.5. When did the Anthropocene start?A.In 1950. B.In 1952. C.In 2009. D.In 2016.6. What is considered as the key marker for the Anthropocene?A.The climate crisis. B.The losses of wildlife.C.The CO 2 fingerprints. D.The plutonium isotopes.7. What might be the significance of the adoption of the Anthropocene?A.It will play a key role in slowing down industrialization.B.It might help human beings to understand their importance.C.It would raise public awareness of environment protection.D.It can encourage the unity between the public and politicians. This summer, schools in New York City are preparing for a shift in reading instruction. Instead of reading whole books, they plan to focus on excerpts (节选). And it’s not just for lower grades, b ut for high schools as well. While it may sound alarming for the public in New York City, the shift to excerpts has been going on for more than twenty years since the Big Standardized Test was adopted as a means of measuring student achievement in reading.Of course, to dig in and reflect on the ideas contained in a whole book and to discuss with fellow readers should be a major part of every student’s education. But the basic model of the most important testing we’ve been subjecting students to for the pas t twenty-some years is this: 1) Read a short excerpt of a book that you are seeing for the first time. 2) Answer some multiple choice questions about it, and do it by yourself and right now.If the test is already set, the best way to prepare for it is with a battery of activities that most closely look like the test itself. And so as the Big Standardized Tests have spread, publishers have cranked out varieties of coaching workbooks that are all collections of short excerpts accompanied by a set of multiple choice questions. Instead of teaching students how to read a whole book, we teach them how to take a standardized test. There are certainly other forces that push teachers in the direction of excerpts over complete books. Since there are only 180 days in the year, teachers always have to decide whether to take a full six months to work through Moby Dick, or to give students just a taste. One can even point the finger at a culture in which we just read headlines instead of articles. But as long as major testing pushes a quick reaction to context-free excerpts, schools will abandon the reflective, cooperative, thoughtful deep dive into a complete book sooner or later. And that will be a loss for students.8. How does the author feel about the new policy in New York City?A.Unsurprised. B.Relieved. C.Unconcerned. D.Excited.9. What does the author most likely want students to do?A.Finish their homework immediately after school.B.Read whole books together with their classmates.C.Buy workbooks that are closely based on the test itself.D.Do more standardized reading comprehension exercises.10. Which of the following can replace the phrase “cranked out” in paragraph 4?A.charged B.canceled C.changed D.produced11. What should be blamed mainly for the shift to excerpts over books?A.The limited time. B.The government policy.C.The official tests. D.The available workbooks. In the late 1990s, a scientist named Mark Blumberg stood in a lab at the University of Iowa watching a few sleeping newlyborn rats. He found that the baby rats kept making small, sharp movements in their sleep, and that their closed eyes moved from side to side in a phenomenon known as rapid eye movement (REM). Blumberg knew that the rats were fine, because he knew people do the same during REM sleep. And scientists have long had an explanation for the twitches (抽动) and REM: They are dreaming about their waking life. However, as he dug deeper, he wondered why adult rats spend only about two hours of each night in REM sleep, while baby rats spend an unusual amount of time in REM, often sleeping for sixteen hours a day and dreaming for eight.“If dreams are hints of waking life, adult rats who have more experiences should spend more time in REM sleep. Why do baby rats, whose eyes are still shut, spend so much time in REM sleep when they have too little to dream about?” he wondered. “Why do their eyes, their legs, tails and whiskers move hundreds of thousands of times during their sleep?”In the end, Blumberg concluded that it might be the other way around — perhaps the movements were sending signals to the brain to help it learn about the body.“You wouldn’t think that the body is something a brain needs to learn,” he wrote in a paper. “But we aren’t born with maps of our bodies. We can’t be, because our bodies change by the day. But in waking life, we cannot move only a single muscle. Even the simplest act of swallowing (吞咽) employs more than thirty pairs of nerves and muscles working together. Our small and sharp movements in sleep, by contrast, are exact and precise: They involve muscles one at a time. In other words, such movements allow the muscles and nerves to form one-to-one connections that otherwise would be impossible. It’s a process that’s most important for the brain to lear n about the body as we grow, suffer injuries and learn new skills.12. What was the previous explanation for REM?A.It was just an outward sign of dreams.B.It showed the difficulty in sleeping.C.It was an indicator of terrible dreams.D.It only occured to sleeping baby rats.13. What can be learned from paragraph 2?A.Baby rats have to spend all night in REM sleep.B.REM sleep just accounts for part of the sleeping time.C.It is unnecessary for baby rats to sleep 16 hours a day.D.It is not enough for adults to have two hours of REM sleep.14. What is a feature of the movements in REM sleep according to Mark Blumberg?A.They teach the brain new skills and heal injuries.B.Muscles have to work together to start the movements.C.Each of them just involves a muscle and a nerve at a time.D.They are less exact and precise than our daily movements.15. What is the text mainly about?A.The importance of REM sleep.B.The latest discoveries about dreaming.C.The relationship between dreams and waking life.D.A different explanation for the twitches during sleep.Small talks are the short conversations we have at parties, at family events or at work. These small talks can open doors that lead to larger, more meaningful conversations. 16 . Here are some tips for them to improve their small-talking ability.Have some conversation starters ready. If you have seen a really good movie or have read a really good book, you can talk about that. You can also talk about something that both of you are interested in. 17 , it will be a very good conversation starter. Or you simply notice and comment on what’s going on around you. If you are at a party and a song comes on that you like or that reminds you of something, you can talk about that.18 . Nobody knows everything. So, if someone brings up something about which you know nothing, just tell them! This lets the other person become the teacher. They feel good about sharing their knowledge and you get to learn something. It’s a win-win situation.Ask open-ended questions. 19 . If you ask questions that need more details to answer, the conversation will go on longer. For example, if you are at a summer pool party, don’t ask a person if they like summer. 20 .This week, I will hike along the Appalachian Trail alone to look for what can be hard to find in the city: solitude. The reason why Keith Limbert learned to drive at his old age was a touching love story, as he was forced to face the lessons for driving a car for his wife. 79-year-old Keith from West Yorkshire put all his efforts into passing the driving test, so that he could take his wife for treatments every day.Even though he had attempted (尝试) driving when he was 25, he couldn’t get through the first two tests. Since then, his loving wife Anne had always driven him around. However, when 58-year-old Anne’s health took a turn for the worse, he had to go back to the driving school again. After Anne had a stroke (中风) in 2015, leaving her in a wheelchair, the couple had to rely on others for their travels. Annoyed with many difficulties, Keith realized that it was time for him to take up learning to drive again. Eventually, it became a necessity when Anne was diagnosed (诊断) with breast cancer in late 2016.Unfortunately, his wife’s condition required regular trips to and from hospital and he was Anne’s full-time caregiver. He loved his wife so much that he did his best to pass his driving test on the third attempt. This time, his hard work paid off. Keith passed his driving test at the age of 79, so he could take his poor wife to hospital by himself. Now this loving couple is leading a comfortable life and on most days, he takes himself to the gym and takes his wife for a coffee.“I don’t feel like I am 79 at all,” Keith is happy to keep his youthful spirit with a pleasant smile on his face.4.Why did Keith try his best to get his driving’s license?A.He didn’t want to waste money.B.He could travel to work conveniently.C.He was persuaded by his family to do so.D.He wanted to drive his wife for her treatments.5.What made Keith’s wife sit in a wheelchair?A.That she fell from a high place and injured her legs.B.That she couldn’t move around due to her breast cancer.C.That a blood tube in her brain burst or became blocked.D.That she had a serious traffic accident and became disabled.6.How can we best describe Keith according to the text?A.Optimistic and considerate.B.Hardworking and generous.C.Shy and cautious.D.Stubborn and bad-tempered.7.What can be the subject of the text?A.Old man realizes his dream of owning a car.B.Old man learns to drive for his beloved one.C.Self-help is better than help from others.D.Never too old to learn to drive.Researchers have found a chemical from a kind of worm (蠕虫) can break down one of the most common forms of plastic. The finding could open up new ways to deal with pollution. There have been several studies showing that microorganisms can release enzymes (酶) that cause the plastics to start to break down, but that process may take a long time. The recently-discovered enzymes were found in the saliva (唾液) of the waxworm. They appear to act in only a few hours.Federica Bertocchini is one of the researchers, who is also a beekeeper and always stores honeycombs, which are built by bees to store honey. One year Bertocchini found her honeycombs full of waxworms. She cleaned the honeycombs and put the worms in a plastic bag. When she returned later, she found that the bag was full of holes. She wondered if the worms were eating the plastic, or if there was a chemical reaction that caused the holes. “We checked and found that the plastics had been broken down,” she said.In her latest research, Bertocchini and her co-workers found two enzymes in the worm’s saliva. The enzymes appeared to break down plastics in only a few hours.Bertocchini’s team is still trying to understand how the worms break down the plastics. They know much more research is needed before the findings can be used to process plasticwaste. However, Bertocchini said the enzymes could be put into a water mixture and then put “over piles of collected plastics” in a waste center. She said that, in the future, the enzymes could be used in homes, where families could deal with their own plastic waste.8.What can we learn about the microorganisms in para. 2?A.They are fond of eating small pieces of plastics.B.They are widely used to deal with plastic pollution.C.It takes long for their enzymes to break down plastics.D.They can easily produce a large amount of useful saliva in a short time.9.How did Bertocchini make the discovery?A.By accident.B.By keeping waxworms.C.By doing experiments.D.By studying bees.10.Why were there many holes in Bertocchini’s bag?A.The bees flew to and bit it.B.There was a chemical reaction.C.There were some sharp things in it.D.The worms chewed and swallowed the plastic.11.What does the author think about the new method of breaking down plastics?A.It’s a theoretical possibility, but it won’t happen.B.It may replace the usual ways soon.C.It is getting increasingly popular.D.There is still a long way to go.People of San Francisco and visitors now have a place to learn and study the largely forgotten history of Chinese workers who helped build the US’ first transcontinental (横贯大陆的) railroad. The Chinese Railroad Workers History Center, near the southern entrance of San Francisco’s Chinatown, is expected to serve as a “gathering place” for people to learn about Chinese Americans’ heritage (遗产) in the US, according to the founder, Florence Fang, a Chinese community leader in the Bay Area. “The center’s purpose is to remember the Chinese railroad workers’ contribution to this country. The goal is to give voice to the voiceless, and the spirit is to remember the past and inspire the future,” said Fang. The building of the Transcontinental Railroad, originally known as the Pacific Railroad, was completed on May 10, 1869.It was considered one of the most remarkable engineering achievements of the 19th century. The railroad greatly changed the nation as it not onlyexpanded the American economy but also increased national confidence. The Chinese workers made up more than 80 percent of the railroad workforce. “What is important to remember is the sweat and the tears and sometimes the lives of the Chinese workers who built the most treacherous, difficult part of the Transcontinental Railroad,” said California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, “Now it will go down in history along with so many other unbelievably important contributions of Chinese Americans.”Kounalaki s and other elected officials in the state and the city joined community leaders on Wednesday at the center to commemorate the 154th anniversary of the completion of the railroad and pay tribute (致敬) to the Chinese workers.“This center joins several other institutions in San Francisco, like the Chinese Historical Society and the Chinese Culture Center, to attract visitors and to teach Chinese American history and culture,” said Peskin, president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.“It comes at a critical time for us. It comes as Chinatown and the home of San Francisco have experienced three very difficult years, Chinatown in particular, not only with the economic harm, but with the rise of Asian hate,” he said. “The center will help teach future generations and make San Francisco proud,” said Peskin. “It will help promote the economy of Chinatown.”12.What is the main idea of the second paragraph?A.The inspiration of designing the center.B.The intention of opening the center.C.The process of building the center.D.The cost of building the center. 13.What is the possible meaning of the underlined word “treacherous” in paragraph 4?A.Unimportant.B.Interesting.C.Expensive.D.Dangerous. 14.Why does the center come at a critical time, based on Peskin’s words?A.There is an increasing feeling of dislike for Asians.B.The economy of Chinatown is developing at a faster speed.C.Other institutions such as Chinese history and literature are being damaged.D.Americans in San Francisco begin to appreciate the Chinese workers’ contributions. 15.What is a suitable title for the news report?A.A railroad transforms American history into what it is todayB.Chinese workers help build US’ first transcontinental railroadC.San Francisco has a new center to remember Chinese railroad workersD.People commemorate 154th anniversary of US’ first transcontinental railroad二、七选五Online marketing means advertising and marketing by using the Internet to drive sales of a product or service. Many European 25 that had been fighting against Nazi Germany came together to 26 ways of rebuilding the 27 system after the war was over. Since then, the organization has expanded (扩大) beyond Europe to include all 28 of the United Nations while keeping to their 29 goal of achieving 30 through the intellectual and moral education of humanity.I had high expectations for this event, which 31 to be an evening of music, dance and a display of arts by three countries along the Silk Road. The performances were indeed excellent. The three musical performances by the Kazakh band, filled with wonderful music and low drum beats, had everyone on the edge of their 32 . I also enjoyed the hanfu fashion show which was the final performance for the evening. The history of hanfu was 33 by models wearing clothes from different Chinese dynasties. They walked onto the stage while the host explained the details of each hanfu style. I feel there are a number of reasons for this. Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded(包围)by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chickens and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food. There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives. There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime, it is also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports. The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore, we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.56. According to the text, what kind of children may eat more unhealthy food? ________ .A. Those who often take exerciseB. Those who often watch TVC. Those who often have meals at homeD. Those who often walk to school57. The author thinks that children are becoming overweight in that ________.A. their parents often cook meals for themB. they are too busy to go out and playC. they can’t choose what to eatD. there are too many fast food shops around58. The word “ steering” underlined in the last paragraph most probably means ________.A. forcingB. guidingC. drivingD. moving59. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.A. tell a storyB. provide factsC. give adviceD. compare opinionsBDavid, a typical American, stays home on workdays. He just plugs into his personal computer terminal(终端)to link up with his office. After work, he watches a movie on his home video recorder, or challenges himself to a game of electronic baseball. On many days, David does not talk to any other human beings, and he doesn’t see any people except the ones on television. David is imaginary, but his lifestyle is very possible. The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting off from contact with our fellow beings. The world of business is one area in which technology is isolating(隔离) us. Experts predict, for example, that many people will soon be able to work at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as insurance agents, secretaries, and accountants(会计) could do their jobs at display terminals in their own homes. They would never have to actually see the people they are dealing with. In addition, the way employees are paid will change. Workers’salaries will automatically(自动地) be credited(计入…名下) to their bank accounts. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their checks. Personal banking will change too. Customers(客户) will deal with machines to save or draw money from their accounts. Bank loans(贷款)will be approved or refused, not in an interview with a loan officer, but through a display screen.Another area that technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for example, was once a group experience. People listened to music at halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now, however, music is a solitary(孤独的) experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their living room, they wear headphones to build a wall of music around them. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to appear on television or are renting videocassettes(录像带) to watch at home.Instead of being involved with the laughter, applause, or hisses(尖叫声) of the audience, viewers watch movie in the isolation of their living rooms. Our games and sports are so changing. Rather than play hide-seek games or baseball after school, children now rush to the local video arcade(有拱顶的楼) to stare attheir individual(个人的) electronic playing fields. They are no longer interested in competing or interacting with each other.Technology, then, seem to be driving human beings apart. Soon, we may no longer need to communicate with other human beings to do our work, entertain ourselves, or play the games we enjoy. Machines will be the co-workers and partners of the future.60. The first paragraph presents the reader with a description of David’s ________ .A. comfortable lifeB. isolated lifeC. modern lifeD. well-organized life61. Technology is changing the world of business because________ .A. machines will take over the work usually done by human beingsB. labor(劳动)and time will be savedC. people will be able to work at homeD. people will be kept well-informed through a display on a computer screen62. From the passage we can conclude that________ .A. the author welcomes modern technology with open armsB. modern technology is faultless in the author’s eyesC. the author only looks the dark side of modern technologyD. the author is strongly against modern technology63. Which of the following is FALSE according to the passage? ________ .A. The changes of modern technology are bringing to people’s lifeB. There are a lot of side effects of modern technologyC. People are becoming more and more solitary with modern technologyD. None of the aboveCKate Piple and I have just graduated from Columbia University. We will travel for four weeks and will tour the United States and part of Canada. We have decided to camp in summer because it does not cost as much as vacationing in hotels. We had to plan very carefully. First, the car we are going to drive is very small, so we decided to take only one small suitcase each and as few camping things as possible. We will take some medicine with us, to prevent insects from hurting us, and also food for picnics. Second, there is a lot to see in the United States and Canada, so we have to decide on the direction we wanted to drive. The date we are leaving is August2. We want to see and do many things on our camping tour. We want to climb in the mountains, visit famous caves, and swim in cool mountain rivers. We want to visit many cities and talk to many people. They can’t help but stay in the hotel for the nightDBelieve it or not, every day, life is made and lost. Every day, life goes on.Every day we experience some of the most important parts of life and may not even realize it: Love, generosity, and perseverance. These values aren’t just important to us; they make the world what it is.Scientists say that gravity force(重力) makes the world turn, but some people say that love makes it go round. Love can be found anywhere: in families, friends, even complete strangers. Even if you can’t see it, it does exist there, and you are aware that it is there.Love may connect people all over the world, but what would the world be without generosity? Whether after a nation disaster, or a school fund-raiser, one thing is certain---it is better to give than to receive. Generosity is found everywhere and whether it is a large or small act, it makes a difference. Most of all, being generous is not something you need any qualifications (资格)for, but no matter what you do, it can make a difference. Sometimes, though, it takes effort to be generous, which leads us to perseverance.Founding a country, riding a bike, or finishing an essay, these are all finished with perseverance. Perseverance is the one thing that can help us achieve whatever you want. It is what helps scientists to discover cures for diseases, and athletes to become champions. You may fail, but every time you make a mistake, that is one less to make the next time. There is an infinite(无穷的) number of things we value, but without love, generosity, and perseverance, we just don’t think that our life or the world would be the way it is.68. The reason why the author thinks the values of love, generosity, andperseverance in our life are not just important to us is that ________ .A. there are many other important aspects in life we should pay more attentiontoB. the world is too complicated for us to understandC. It is these three factors that make the world the way it is, though wehave too many things to deal withD. these three things are just thought of as ordinary as other parts of theworld we live in69. Which of the following is TRUE according to the author? ________ .A. Perseverance is the only thing that can help us to achieve successB. People don’t understand the life they are experiencing at allC. We can find love in even complete strangers sometimesD. What the world is like depends on gravity, love, generosity, andperseverance, in the opinion of the author70. What would be the best title for the passage? ________ .A. Success and FailureB. Three ValuesC. Endless LoveD. Life full of Hope71. We find the passage expresses a(n) ________ attitude to us when we readbetween the lines.A. negativeB. positiveC. humorousD. objectiveEThe huge traffic jam(阻塞) on Friday in Seatle, which happened after a light snow, could be attributed to the low temperature and poor city preparations, said meteorological(气象的) officials yesterday. The snowfall began around 1 p.m. on Friday and was only 1 millimeter deep, said an expert with the Seatle Meteorological Observatory, adding that it was just “a little snow”.However, the snow caused the city’s entire transportation system to come to a stop until early Saturday morning.“Low temperature is one of the reasons for the rare situation.”Said the expert. Historical records of the observatory showed that the temperature at this time of year in Seatle is generally a little above 0°C. But the average temperature since Thursday has remained 3 degrees lower than that in the same period of past years. On Friday, the highest temperature on the road surface was only minus 1 degree, making it easy for the snow to pile up and soon turn to ice after cars rolled over it.Last Tuesday, a 0.45 millimeter snow hit this city but didn’t stop transportation because the highest temperature that day was 0.9°C.Another reason for the recent traffic jam lies in the failure of the observatory to issue a warning about the expected snowfall, which left the city’s street cleaning department and traffic policemen unprepared.Street cleaning vehicles(车辆) didn’t begin preparations until 4 p.m. and began to thaw the snow at 6 p.m.. 30 vehicles were sent to remove snow but many were stalled in traffic while on their way to spread a new environmentally friendly chemical that Seatle has employed this year to shaw snow. The hotline 911 phone number for reporting traffic accidents broke down due tothe heavy surge in calls, and countless vehicles came in and out of Seatle on Friday afternoon.72. What created the huge traffic jam in Seatle? ________ .A. The low temperatureB. The poor city preparationsC. The heavy snowD. Both A and B73. Why was there no traffic jam on last Friday? ________ .A. Because street cleaning vehicles cleaned the snow in timeB. Because the temperature was above 0°CC. Because there was not much traffic that dayD. Because the traffic policemen prepared it well74. How many hours did the street cleaning vehicles spend making preparations? ________ .A. 1 hoursB. 2 hoursC. 4 hoursD. 5 hours75. Why did the hotline 911 phone number break down? Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, buildself-esteem(自尊)and motivate others to do their best.Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.【小题1】The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________.A.not sticks and stones but words will hurt usB.inspiring words give us confidenceC.negative words may let us downD.words have a lasting effect on us【小题2】There is no sense for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because _______A.almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselvesB.we can benefit from talking to ourselvesC.talking to ourselves always gives us courageD.it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alon e【小题3】The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely _______ .A.praise ourselvesB.remind ourselvesC.make ourselves relaxedD.give our selves amusement【小题4】The author would probably hold the view that ___________ A.encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offersB.negative words may encourage us to make more progressC.people tend to remember friendly wordsD.it is better to think twice before talking to others4.假如你班要就“如何为高考做准备”开一个班会,请根据以下内容写一篇发言稿,谈谈你对高考备考过程中要注意的事项及建议理由:1.保持良好的心态有助于减轻焦虑,还能增强克服困难的勇气;2.目标明确、正确评价自己。
