From that moment, my life has been pretty much devoted to the game. When I play golf, there’s always a chance of making something magical happen-whether it’s breaking a personal record or potentially making a hole-in-one. This is the aspect of golf that attracted me in growing up. However, I had to take a break because I couldn’t really afford to play while in college, suffering from burnout. I’d still go out once in a while to play with friends, but for the first time since my teens, I was away from my community.Several years later, my enthusiasm for playing golf was inspired again. I became familiar with the game again after playing on and off at Langston Golf Course. From the moment I arrived. this place felt like one of the courses where I grew up: A modest spot where people of all working-class backgrounds came to experience the game, eat lunch or have a drink. A place where golfers who are Black, brown and women are welcomed. The sense of community I’ve regained with the game is more than I could’ve ever imagined.I like hiking around, chasing a little white ball around a golf course. I also like connecting with old friends and meeting new ones. Some I’ve been playing with since high school, and our text threads are loaded with trash talk about who’s playing well and who isn’t. They’re usually the ones spurring me to practice and get better. We share experiences on the golf course that are memorable and have stories for days: My circle only seems to be expanding, and I’m excited to see what the future bolds.4.Why was the author once away from his golf community?A.He couldn’t spare time to play golf.B.He didn’t feel a sense of achievement.C.He wanted to make more new friends D.He tried to get out of his parents’ control 5.What does the author say about Langston Golf Course?A.It carried his past memories B.It reminded him to keep modestC.It offered him a sense of belonging.D.It witnessed his accomplishments6.What does the underlined word “spurring” in paragraph 4 mean?A.Hating.B.Warning.C.Forbidding D.Pushing.7.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Golf: My Journey to Greatness B.Golf: More Than a Game to MeC.Discovering Enthusiasm for Golf D.Pursuing Perfection Through GolfSome languages are rapid-fire and others more unhurried but there is no difference in the speed at which information is shared, according to the new research. The world's 7000 or so languages differ greatly not only in their range of available phonemes-the units of sound that make up speech, but also in the pace at which these building blocks are thrown together in speech. But the new research into the information content in speech shows that languages allow their speakers to communicate about the same amount of information per second despite wide variations in the speed of speech. To understand this better, researchers led by Christophe Coupé from the University of Lyon and Yoon Oh from the University of Canterbury studied recordings of 170 native adult speakers of 17 European and Asian languages. Each speaker read a set of standardized texts containing about 240, 000 syllables (音节). The researchers found that the fastest language hit 9.1syllables per second, and the slowest a mere 4. 3. But this was cancelled out by the amount of information, measured in bits, that each syllable contained. This varied significantly from 4. 8 bits per syllable for Basque to 8. 0 bits per syllable for Vietnamese. The study found languages that pack a lot of information into sounds and syllables tend to be spoken more slowly, while those with a low information density (密度) are delivered more rapidly. While speech rat and information density fluctuate (波动) widely, the information rate-the speed at which information is delivered-stays consistently around 39. 15 bits per second. The researchers say this appears to represent a optimal (最佳的) rat for giving and receiving information. Languages seem to stably inhabit an optimal range of information rates, away from the extremes that can still be available to individual speakers. Of course, not everybody speaks at the optimal information rate. We all know people who talk too quickly or slowly, and the new research may cast light on why we find listening to them hard work.8.What has the new research found out?A.Languages tend to convey information with similar efficiency.B.Languages have nearly the same range of available phonemesC.The number of languages has gradually decreased to about 7000.D.The speed of speech is determined by the information content.9.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?A.A further explanation of the research methods.B.A brief introduction of the research process.C.Potential application of the research findings.D.Supporting evidence for the research results.10.What can we learn from the finding of Christophe’s study?A.More words in speech convey more informationB.The information rate remains at a reasonable level.C.The speech rate can affect the information density.D.Languages with more syllables are delivered faster11.What can be inferred about the optimal information rate?A.It can lead to smooth communication.B.It may result in the difficulty of listening C.It stays the same for individual speakers.D.It prevents speakers from going to extremes.Out in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 60 miles off the northwest coast of Africa, lie the Canary Islands. In the 1950s, the boom in package tourism showed promise as a new cash crop. But while the Canary Islands had the sunshine, warm climate and ease of access from Europe needed for this new industry, they were missing a vital element picture postcard sandy beaches. So the developers on Tenerife in the Canary Islands constructed a breakwater (防波堤) over half a mile long. And then, from the Western Sahara on Africa’s northwest coast, they shipped in 270, 000 tons of sand. By 1973, the project was complete. As anticipated, tourists arrived. Along the engineered beach, rows and rows of tourists relax on beach chairs under umbrellas or walkacross soft sand to cool down in the water.Unanticipated was what their presence gave to one of the world’s most endangered fish species, angel sharks — visibility. The gentle wind creates tiny waves on the water’s surface, a magical cover for what lies beneath — an angel shark nursery. Female angel sharks regularly migrate to these ideally sheltered waters to give birth to pups (幼崽), who remain in the shallows for about a year. Feeding on small fishes, they grow to around the same length as a newborn human baby.Surveys have shown that other beaches in the Canary Islands are also potential nursery sites. Interestingly, most of them have been remade to make them more attractive to people. Playa Chica has another long sweep of imported sand. It’s an attraction for divers as well as angel sharks, so the number of sightings of mature angel sharks of this shoreline is one of highest in the islands.Normally, massive, environmentally disruptive projects are bad for wildlife. But what’s clear is that after the breakwater was built and the sand arrived, people followed, and in the calm, shallow waters they began to see baby angel sharks. And unlike how many an association between humans and wildlife ends-in conflict and dead animals, this time it led to conservation.12.Why did the developers on Tenerife carry out the project?A.To build a base for shipping.B.To boost the local tourism industry.C.To fight against the rising sea.D.To protect the island’s eco-system. 13.What was an unexpected result of the project?A.It caused the disappearance of some fishes.B.It made a magical tourist attraction.C.It gave angel sharks a home.D.It created conflicts between sharks and tourists.14.What is the author’s attitude toward the engineered beach?A.Favorable.B.Doubtful.C.Unclear.D.Intolerant. 15.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A.To highlight the financial benefits of tourism.B.To introduce potential human-wildlife coexistence.C.To explain the situation of endangered species.D.To emphasize the importance of wildlife conservation. If you’ve ever tried something big, then you’ve probably had to deal with doubt at a certain point. 安徽长丰县2016高考英语阅读理解【二轮】编练(4)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。
【2014模拟冲刺试题】Reading is a great way to improve your English. You'll learn new words, revise previously-taught structures and absorb thousands of useful expressions and phrases... without any effort. By reading, you are receiving valuable language input. And this is how you learn! Remember, language learning is a combination of input + practice. As you're reading, you're taking in language naturally, and you're seeing how it all fits together. This is crucial to your learning. The great thing about reading is that learning takes place subconsciously. There are no exercises to do, no grammar rules to learn, no tasks to complete... it's all natural. The language flows in through your eyes, and gets registered(记录) in your brain. What could be easier? The key to effective reading is to read things that you want to read. There are millions of books, magazines and websites out there. You couldn't possibly read them all. So, the important thing is to find things that you like reading. Then, you'll be motivated to read. And then the reading won't be difficult. It'll be easy! And then you'll learn. It's simple.Remember: read what you want to read. What you like reading. What motivates and inspires you. But where can you start? Well, you could read a book that you've already read in your own language. Simply find a translated version of a book that you have read and enjoyed. This will make processing the content in the target language much easier as you’ll al ready know what the book is about! You could also read the news. This is great as you can read the news in your own language first, then in English. You'll see that it won't be too difficult as you'll be familiar with the topics and stories. Magazines are also great. Find one that covers a topic you're interested in: business, clothing, guns, horses, houses, housekeeping, stocks and shares, sports, computers, electronics, designing, cooking... you name it, they'll have it. If not, look for information on the internet. There are also websites for every topic underthe sun! Why not join a forum? They're a great source of English input as the language is often written in a simple, spoken style. Go to Google Groups, which has discussion groups based on common interests. Just type in the topic that interests you and join the chat. Finally, how you read is also important. The best thing is to read without using a dictionary. Let the words flow over you. Just skip the parts you don't understand. If you make your reading feel too much like work, it'll stop being fun. Of course, you could make a note of any new words and phrases that you like or see repeated frequently, but try not to break your concentration too much. Also, set yourself mini-objectives. For example, if you're reading a novel, read 20 pages a day. Very soon, you'll have been exposed to thousands of useful phrases and words. Have fun reading! You'll learn so much!50. The underlined word “crucial” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to _________________.A. easyB. importantC. difficultD. suitable51. The key to effective reading is _________________________________________.A. to read millions of booksB. not to learn grammar rulesC. to be motivated to readD. to read easy things52.You can start to read by ______________________________________________.A. reading a book that you've already read in EnglishB. reading the news in English firstC. going to Google Groups to practice spoken EnglishD. reading magazines containing topics you are interested in53. From the passage we can learn that __________________________________.A. when you read you needn’t look up every new word in the dictionaryB. the great thing about reading is that you can read without any effortC. to read is as much fun as to workD. you should make notes of every new word and phrase while reading54. The best title of the passage can be ____________________________________.A. How To Read English NovelsB. How To Learn English By ReadingC. How To Absorb Expressions And PhrasesD. 【2014二模】Best bike-sharing cities in the worldWhen Citi Bike rolled onto the streets of New York this Memorial Day, it was treated as a national event and even international media took notice. In advance of the launch, one blog post on Le Monde’s website claim ed, “Bike share to conquer America.”The next major development was in Copenhagen, which introduced a coin-operated system in 1995 called B klen, or “City Bike.” For 17 years, these bike s zipped through the streets of Denmark’s capital until the program was shut down late last year—it’s getting an upgrade to third generation technology.Sponsored by media giant Clear Channel, the French city of Rennes brought the next generation of bike share to the world in 1998 by replacing coin operation with card access and electronic booths. From there the technology has progressed, picking up GPS and real-time tracking along the way, and has spread throughout Western Europe—and the world.According to the Bike Sharing World Map, maintained by DeMaio and Russell Meddin of Bike Share Philadelphia, there are 553 bike share programs in operation worldwide and another 193 in planning or under construction. And they’re no t just in Europe and North America. The worldwide leader in bike sharing, as measured by the number of bikes, is China. According to data collected by the Earth Policy Institute, 20 of the 25 largest bike share programs are Chinese. Its largest one, in the city of Wuhan, has twice the number of bikes as all of France’s shares combined.Although most of the systems share several characteristics—bikes with low theft value, electronic docking stations, ranked payment scales—different cities are trying different ways to make bike sharing work.Take a look at Hangzhou, China, this city of 6.2 million near Shanghai, and you’ll see what just may be the best bike share in the world. Although now second on the planet (and China) by size, the Hangzhou Public Bicycle system is one of the densest shares, and probably the most extensively used one, anywhere, largely because of its mixing into public transport: a single card grants access to subway, bus, ferry, taxi and bike share. Residents and tourists alike can put down a deposit of 200 ChineseYuan (about $33) and ride for an hour for free in this scenic city on the Yangtze Delta. Each additional hour is the equal of only $0.15—one reason why riders put in a quarter-million rides a day. By 2020 it’s projected to have 175,000 bikes.71. What does the blogger mean by the underlined part “Bike share to conquer America.”?A. Bike share is a national event.B. Bike share attracts international media.C. Bike share is popular in America.D. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity; others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied onhow well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve can we discover a new meaning in competition.【小题1】What does this passage mainly talk about?A.Competition helps to set up self-respect.B.Opinions about competition are different among people.C.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition【小题2】Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?A.It pushes society forward.B.It builds up a sense of duty.C.It improves personal abilities.D.It encourages individual efforts.【小题3】What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a desire to fail ?A.One’s w orth lies in his performance compared with others.B.One’s success in competition needs great efforts.C.One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills.D.One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.【小题4】Which point of view may the author agree to?A.Every effort should be paid back.B.Competition should be encouraged.C.Winning should be a life-and-death matter.D.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.2016高考英语阅读理解--人生百味类What I like to advise people is to find out what it is that makes them happy. What do you love to do? If you truly love what you do just go ahead and try to make a living by doing it. People will throw money at you to do it. But you will always have to work hard at it. I have to draw every single day of my life. I have to draw about 20 ideas. My advice is to put aside a certain amount of time every day and make you draw or whatever, especially when you don’t feel like it. Only in this way will you be able to perfect your talent. The first step you take is to go to your local library and ask for the publications issued in the current years. When you get these publications, try to find the names of the top people concerned and their presidents. After you find these, write down their names and addresses. Keep this list and update it every year. Next thing you want to do is to create at least 40 cartoons. Get a grid(格子) from one of the strips in the newspapers, enlarge it to whatever size you wish and draw inside this grid. Now take the best 20 of your ideas and make them into finished pieces. To do this, you would want to copy them in ink because if you were a professional cartoonist, that was what you should do. Now you can reduce the size of the finished cartoons to fit onto a regular comic’s page. By compa ring yours with the others already in print, it gives you a good idea of clarity to your cartoon. The next step is to write letters to presidents of the publication. In the letters, explain who you think would read your work, or in other words, what group do you think you would target. After you complete these, send all of your information enclosed with letters in the appropriate envelope. Now as soon as you send out these letters, start to create a brand new strip with all new characters. Don’t get married to one idea because if your idea gets turned down then you will give up. And always remember. If you receive a rejection from any of them, keep in mind that you are working on something better. You will be working on something new and more exciting and the rejection letter will not have any impact. With this in mind…【小题1】What is the advice from the writer in the first paragraph when you want to succeed in your life?A.Stop doing anything until you find something quite suitable for your future career.B.Put aside a certain amount of time every day to consider how to make a living.C.Make a living by something that you truly like to do as your profession and work hard at it.D.Perfect your talent only by drawing some cartoons.【小题2】The purpose of writing a letter to the president was to ____.A.get some money to support the later careerB.enclose the information on how to become cartoonists with the letterC.focus his attention on the workD.explain who would be the readers of the work【小题3】The unde rlined phrase “get married to one idea” in the last paragraph probably refers to ______.A.having a strong desire to get marriedB.fixing all attention on one ideaC.marrying someone is a good ideasD.refusing one idea to get married阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。

【2014模拟调研】Many of you should not own dogs. It’s that simple. The reason is that, if you own a dog,you must train a dog, and many dog owners out there, it is safe to say, have little or no controlover their dogs, because they do not train them.Strong words? Maybe. But they are simple, honest words, as untrained dogs living inresidential neighborhoods bark at will, run loose, and visit and damage neighboring propertieswith th eir owners’blessings as they deliberately let them run.Take note of the fact that you, the dog owner, cannot control your dog causing a continual nuisance(麻烦事)that damages the quality of life in your neighborhood. There’s nothing more annoying to most people than a dog that barks and nothing more confusing than trying to understand the deficient(有缺陷的)mentality of the dog owner who allows his dog to do so.After all, the irresponsible dog owner hears the barking too, and so those who must put up with it are continually left wondering-what are they thinking, are they deaf? Many dog owners believe it is not possible for their dog to be trained, an indication that the owners themselves lack self discipline, and most likely have never really tried to apply discipline to other issues in their lives, not with consistency, or that they are simply lazy and inattentive to their own adult responsibilities at the expense of others.Irresponsible dog owners, though, do train their dogs. A dog is a reflection of its owner.Whatever a dog does (run loose, bark at will, jump on guests entering the front door, soilneighboring lawns) is a result of the decisions of the owner. The choice not to do something isindeed a choice. The good news is that with mere consistency, a dog can be trained rather quickly, in acouple of weeks if the owner takes his responsibility seriously. Again, that process will be areflection of the owner's behavior, and the primary ingredient(要素)in that behavior is notallowing the dog, not even once, to repeat the bad behavior without consequences when told and directed not to. You can stop your dog from barking with simple firm voice commands, direct eye contact, and force of will in a relatively short time, provided you are consistent and a reasonably mature person.Dogs, what,s more, love this training because pleasing you, their owner, is what they arc all about. The upshot(结果,要点)will be that you have a more connected relationship with your dog, a better dog that is suited to its environment.56. Which is NOT the reason for dog owners to have little or no control over their dogs?A. They are lazy and unwilling to train their dogs.B. They think their dogs can act well without training.C,They lack self-control over many issues in daily life.D. They don't give enough attention to their responsibilities.57. What's the author's attitude towards owners of untrained dogs?A. Prejudiced.B. Unclear.C. Disapproving.D. Curious.58. This article is mainly written to_.A. instruct dog owners how to train dogsB .call on dog owners to train their dogsC. sing high praise for responsible dog ownersD. analyze the relationship between dog owners and their dogs59. It can be concluded from the passage that_.A. responsible dog owners can put up with dogs’barkingB .irresponsible dog owners deliberately train their dogs to do something wrongC. we should not own dogs because they can damage the quality of our daily lifeD .whether a dog can be trained properly may depend on the dog owner's behavior 【参考答案】56--59 BCBD2016高考英语阅读理解--人生百味类I've always felt a bit sad for weekend fathers, who are divorced and must maintain a bond with their children through visits on the weekend. Not having the opportunity for a lot of quality time, they go in for quantity giving lots of gifts and taking the children on non stop outings. But now I can understand.I'm a weekend mom.My child, Henry, is a dog.Henry just returned to his father, Jack, after a happy stay with me.For ten days, I fed him the best food, canceled plans to stay home with him and let him sleep on the bed every night.Jack and I broke up a year ago.But neither of us wanted to part with Henry, so we share him.Not surprisingly, Henry is a willing participant in our contest for his love.Jack doesn't let Henry sleep on his bed, so that's where I can always gain big points.I feed Henry higher quality food.I am always replacing his expe nsive “thingy" ,a cotton knot he likes chewing on.It' s his favorite toy, and the only one he has is at my house.Score another one for me.Jack now has a girlfriend, Lucy.At first she was afraid of dogs, which secretly delighted me.But that Henry, just trying to be polite(the way I taught him to be),won her over.If truth be told, as time passes, there has been a slight change in Henry' s behavior toward me.The worst was one day when Jack dropped him off for atwo week stay.Henry and I were in the backyard playing as Jack was driving off. When he heard Jack's truck, he ran after it for two blocks until Jackhad to stop and bring him back. That hurt, especially since I had friends over at the time.In a rare conciliatory (安抚的) mood, Jack said to me, "You know, I' m his best friend, but you'll always be his mom."Whatever it takes, I plan to make sure it stays that way.【小题1】At the writer's home, Henry________.A.does a lot of runningB.enjoys high quality foodC.has many expensive toysD.is not allowed to sleep on her bed【小题2】The writer feels hurt because________.A.Jack has got a girlfriendB.Lucy doesn't like Henry at allC.Jack doesn't treat Henry as well as beforeD.Henry' s attitude to her has changed slightly【小题3】This article is mainly about________.A.the tips on keeping dogsB.the writer' s happy life with a dogC.the writer' s efforts to win a dog's loveD.the relationship between the writer and Jack【小题4】The writer wrote the passage in a/an_________way.A.humorous B.serous C.angry D.painful2016高考英语阅读理解--人生百味类The Truth Can Set You FreeI recently got pulled over for speeding not far from my new home in Virginia.I hadn’t been paying attention, and I had driven a few miles an hour over the speed limit.“Can I see your license and registration?” the police officer asked me. I e xplained that I had just moved to Virginia, and I hadn’t had time to re-register yet.“So what brings you here?”He had asked a direct question. We’ve moved down here to be close to my wife’s family.”“So you’ve got cancer,” he said flatly. He was trying to figure me out. Was I really dying? Was I lying? He took a long look at me. “You know, for a guy who h as only a few months to live, you sure look good.”He was obviously thinking: “Either this guy is pulling one big fat line on me, or he’s telling the truth.” He was trying to question my honesty without directly calling me a liar. And so he had forced me to prove that I was being honest. “Well, officer, I know that I look pretty healthy. I look great on the outside, but the tumors(肿瘤)are on the inside.” And then, I don’t know what possessed me, but I just did it. I pulled up my shirt, showing the operational scars. He looked at my scars. He looked in my eyes. He now knew he was talking to a dying man. Well, he wasn’t taking this any further. He handed me back my license. “Do me a favor.” he said, “Slow down from now on.”The awful truth had set me free. As he went back to his police car, I had a realization. However, according to the global Internet survey done by the UK Sleep Council, thesiesta(午睡)was the right idea all along. The UK Sleep Council called on the country'sbosses to end nine-to-five working in favor of more flexible hours. They believe what would really increase the workers' productivity is a nice afternoon nap, rather than those bonuses.Forty-one percent of the 12,000 people who responded to the council's survey said they were most productive in the morning, while 38 percent said theyhit their stridein the evening. "This means most of them cannot fully pay attention to what they do in the middle of the day," said sleep expert Dr. Chris Idzikowskii. "We must conclude from this survey that the traditional nine-to-five working day does not suit most workers." He suggested that allowing workers to follow their natural sleeping habits would actually benefit employers by allowing them to expand their working hours and be more productive.Fortunately, being a college lecturer, I don't have to go to work everyday. I only work three days a week, but during the three days I work really long hours and have no time for a little siesta. I'm usually so tired and sleepy in the afternoon, which really affects thevitality(活力)of my classes.I think Dr. Chris Idzikowskii's idea is worthwhile. When people have flexible working hours they could reach their highest productivity. On top of that, flexible working hours mean thatpeople don't have to work all at the same time. That way we could avoid traffic jams. Therefore, it's really killing two birds with one stone!8. What can improve the workers' productivity, according to the UK Sleep Council?A. More bonuses.B. The flexible working time.C. Working for long hours.D. Working in a relaxing way.9. What does the underlined part probably mean in Paragraph 2?A. Were most sleepy.B. Were most flexible.C. It could solve most of the traffic problems.B. He finds Dr. Chris Idzikowskii respectable.C. He thinks the idea can benefit the society.D. It allows him to work for fewer hours.DSome people take their holiday decoration very seriously. And some take it to the next level. The Griffith family in Kenova, West Virginia, is in this camp. They put on a display that shows they’re just filled with Halloween spirit. Each year, this family displays 3,000 pumpkins (南瓜) in front of their home for the Halloween season. Yes, you readthatright. People can’t help but come to the area, walking along the sidewalk outside the house to get that perfect Halloween experience.“Locals take great pride in it, and then there are people from around the country who plan fall trips and include it in their trips so they can see it,” said Tyson Compton, president of the Cabell‑Huntington Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s really something.”“It’s become a tradition for many people in our area, and it feels good to keep that going,” Griffith said.12. In some cultures, people will have a daily nap — thisis fine. The warning comes when people start sleeping during the daytime, when they did not before. There is certainly a good reason to believe that daytime sleepiness — as in the Alzheimer's study — can be a marker of an underlying condition. For most people, napping during the day is mainly a sign that you are not getting enough sleep at night, says Dr. Neil Stanley, a sleep expert. "If you feel sleepy during the day, you should think about taking a nap. That is what the body needs — it doesn't need to be kept awake with caffeine, it needs sleep. "The feeling to notice is "sleepiness", he says, not "tiredness", which could be more psychological and linked to stress. So how do you nap well? The key thing, says Stanley, is how long your nap lasts. Choose either a 20-or 90-minute nap. "When you fall asleep, you'll quickly go through the lighter stages of sleep into your first period of deep sleep. You don't want to wake up in deep sleep because that's when you wake and feel worse than you did before. "Napping for 20 minutes means you will wake up before you go into deep sleep; napping for 90 minutes means you'll complete a sleep cycle.Once you factor in the time it takes to fall asleep — some people are better at napping than others but, says Stanley, "a healthy adult will fall asleep in between 5 and 12 minutes" — you can set an alarm, allowing a 30- to 40-minute period for a short nap, and up to two hours for a longer one.A good time to nap is during the body's natural dip in the afternoon, between 2 pm and 4 pm. "You don't really want to be napping much pastthatbecause then you are going to be eating into your night-time sleep," Stanley says. The point, he stresses, is to get good night-time sleep, which would ensure you probably don't need to nap at all.4. What does an afternoon nap indicate for most people?A. Caffeine addiction.B. Psychological stress.C. Insufficient night sleep.D. Potential physical illness.5. What is the key to a good nap?A. Duration.B. Surroundings.C. Health.D. Stages.6. What does the underlined word "that" in the last paragraph refer to?A. A 30- to 40- minute period.B. Between 2 pm and 4 pm.C. Between 5 and 12 minutes.D. A 20- to 90-minute period.7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Why to phase a napB. When to take a good napC. What to learn from a napD. How to have a successful napCLight pollution is a significant but overlooked driver of the rapid decline of insect populations, according to the most comprehensive review of the scientific evidence to date.Artificial light at night can affect every aspect of insects' lives, the researchers said. "We strongly believe artificial light at night — in combination with habitat loss, chemical pollution.invasive (入侵的) species, and climate change — is driving insect declines, " the scientists concluded after assessing more than 150 studies.Insect population collapses have been reported around the world, and the first global scientific review published in February, said widespread declines threatened to cause a "catastrophic collapse of nature's ecosystems".There are thought to be millions of insect species, most still unknown to science, and about half are active at night. Those active in the day may also be disturbed by light at night when they are at rest. The most familiar impact of light pollution is moths (飞蛾) flapping around a bulb, mistaking it for the moon. Some insects use the polarisation of light to find the water they need to breed, as light waves line up after reflecting from a smooth surface. But artificial light can scupper (使泡汤) this. Insects areimportant prey (猎物) for many species, but light pollution can tip the balance in favour of the predator if it traps insects around lights. Such increases in predation risk were likely to cause the rapid extinction of affected species, the researchers said. The researchers said most human-caused threats to insects have analogues in nature, such as climate change and invasive species. But light pollution is particularly hard for insects to deal with. However, unlike other drivers of decline, light pollution is ly easy to prevent. Simply turning off lights that are not needed is the most obvious action, he said, while making lights motion-activated also cuts light pollution. Shading lights so only the area needed is lit up is important. It is the same with avoiding blue-white lights, whichinterfere with daily rhythms. LED lights also offer hope as they can be easily tuned to avoid harmful colours and flicker rates.8. What is discussed in the passage?A. Causes of declining insect populations.B. Consequences of insect population collapses.C. Light pollution: the key bringer of insect declines.D. Insect declines: the driver of the collapsed ecosystem.9. What is the 5th paragraph mainly about?A. How light travels in space.B. How light helps insects find food.C. How the food chain is interrelated.D. How light pollution affects insects.10. What does the underlined word"analogues"in Paragraph 6probably mean?A. Selective things.B. Similar things.C. Variations.D. Limitations.11. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?A. To offer solutions.B. To give examples.C. To make comparisons.D. To present arguments.DI was in the second year of my Ph. D. program when a colleague asked what I would do if I had an extra hour every day. Without much consideration, I said I would use it to help others. The question kept coming to my mind. Like many graduate students, I was overwhelmed (难以承受的) with research, teaching, coursework, and some attempt at a personal life. Still, I asked myself, "Do I really need a 25th hour to help other people-or do I need to make better use of the 24 hours I have?"I needed something to help me return to my old self. After that conversation with my colleague, I googled (谷歌搜索) “volunteer opportunities near me”. A local organization that drives people to stores or appointments was looking for volunteers. Having grown up in a rural village where everyone knew oneanother and my grandparents were always close by, I thought serving senior citizens in my new hometown might be just what I needed.A short time later, I started to volunteer for an organization that provides transportation for senior citizensand people with disabilities. To my surprise, adding this activity to my busy life was just what I needed to calm the confusion I was feeling as a first-generation international graduate student.I started to volunteer about 3 hours every weekend, the time I otherwise would have wasted oversleeping or scrolling (滚屏) through social media. Sharing stories with my riders was much more rewarding. What they told me about their lives helped me realize that in every corner of the world, humans are connected with the languageof emotions. And seeing how eager my riders were to spend time out and about inspired me to think about how to spend my time, which used to slip away. My previously overwhelming schedule began to feel manageable.I'm proud of who I have become, and I continue to reflect on how I'm using the most valuable thing in life: my time.12. Why did the author ask himself the question in Paragraph 1?A. He wanted to return to normal life.B. He was busy but wanted to help others.C. He couldn't bear too much school work.D. He couldn't answer his colleague's question.13. How did the author find the volunteer job?A. A colleague recommended it.B. A local organization offered it.C. He got it from his grandparents.D. He got it by surfing on the Internet.14. What made the author feel his volunteer job was worth doing?A. Communicating with his riders.B. Improving his language learning.C. The youngest of five brothers, I took on the role as a “maintenance (维修) man” at an early age for our family’s small grocery store. Often my dad wouldn’t give me a clear idea of how something shouldbe done, so I just had to figure it out by researching or through trial and error.Fast forward to 2016 and those problem-solving skills would become the focus of Tippecanoe High School’s Homebuilding class. I knew I wanted to teach the students skills that went beyond just being able to hammer nails or cut pieces of two-by-fours. The problem was that we didn’t have the resources at the time to do much else. The idea of attracting some type of funding seemed very important. Designing, building and selling a tiny house on wheels seemed like the perfect project to accomplishthe task. I reached out to a number of local businesses and most of them responded with the greatest support for what x k w we were doing. This year we added a new element to the program. Through one of our partners, we were able to connect with the nonprofit Veteran’s Ananda Incorporated. Students in the Homebuilding class are leading the design and production of micro houses to be donated to this organization. The new partnership gives the students another focus to consider when designing and building the houses. There has been no shortage of students since our first year. Three years ago we had 41 students, the next 191, and this year it was limited to just over 160 students so we could have a safe and manageable classroom environment. The number of girls taking the class has risen steadily over the last few years as well. This class offers something for everyone and the skills are universal.1. Simard grew up in Canadian forests as a child of loggers before becoming an ecologist. She's now a professor of forest ecology at theUniversityofBritish Columbia.Trees are linked to neighboring trees by a network of fungi below the surface of the earth that resembles the nervous networks in the brain, she explains. In one study, Simard watched as a Douglas fir tree that had been injured by insects appeared to send chemical warning signals to a pine nearby. The pine tree then produced defense enzymes to protect against the insect.“This was a breakthrough,” Simard says. The trees were sharing “information that actually is important to the health of the whole forest.”In addition to warning each other of danger, Simard says that trees have been known to share nutrients at critical times to keep each other healthy. She says the trees in a forest are often linked to each other via an older tree she calls a “mother” or “hub” tree.“In connecting with all the trees of different ages, the mother trees can actually ease the growth of these young trees,” she says. “The young trees will link into the network of the old trees and benefit from that huge resource capacity. And the old trees would also pass a little bit of carbon and nutrients and water to the young trees, at crucial times in their lives, that actually help them survive.”The study of trees took on a new resonance for Simard when she suffered from breast cancer. During her treatment, she learned that one of the medicines she relied on was actually obtained from what some trees produce for their own mutual defense. She explains her research on cooperation in the forest, and shares her personal story in the new bookFinding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of theForest.4. How could a Douglas fir tree send chemical warning signals to a pine nearby?A. By an underground network of fungi.B. By the nervous networks in the brain.C. By making cooperation with each other.D. But one family has survived four generations and hopes to continue long into the future. The year was 1933 when Ed VanderWal's father first stepped onto the farm. Now 80 years later, Ed carries the passion(热情) his father gave him for farming every daywhile working the fields on the family farm in Volga.“Well, I was in the first grade when my dad moved here to this farm and I grew up on the farm. And that's what I was interested in doing more,” Ed said. But that love of working the land didn't stop with Ed. He's passed it down to his six sons. Some of them run farms of their own now, but two of them, Scott and David, still work side by side with their dad every day. Some people might worry that working sun up to sun down with family seven days a week would lead to a few family spats(争吵). But for the VanderWals, the constant time together works just fine.“When families work together on a farm, it's a challenge at times getting along. Everyone has to pull their weight and do their share. And that, of course, transfers from one generation to the next,” Scott said. And while they all get along like any family, with good days and bad, it's tradition that keeps each generation teaching the next.“But we taught them to work with animals at a young age, like most farmers do. So it's nice to be able to passthat tradition onto the next generation,” Scott said. The youngest generation of the VanderWals, Ed's three grandsons and a granddaughter, all started learning farming techniques at a young age.8. A 34-year-oldUSman recently ended up in hospital after eating a Carolina Reaper—the spiciest chili in the world. After taking just a single bite of one, the man suffered from serious headaches in the following few days, reported BBC News.In fact, reports of stomachache and headache caused by eating spicy food are not something unusual. But if chilies are harmful, why is it that human beings are the only animals to eat this vegetable? According to thewebsite Huanqiu, about 600 million Chinese people—almost half of the national population—are chili eaters. So what makes people love chilies so much? The human body reacts to the burning feeling that comes from eating chilies by releasing natural chemicals that “produce a sense of happiness” , noted BBC News. And the benefits go even further than just personal enjoyment. A survey conducted by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences found that the death rate of those who eat spicy food once or twice a week is 10 percent lower than those who eat it less than once a week. The number decreased to 14 percent for those who eat spicy food six to seven times a week. And another study done by theUniversityofVermontcame to a similar conclusion. “The data encourages people to eat more spicy food to improve health and reduce death risk at an early age,” Liu Qi, a nutritionist at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, told BBC News.Chilies have anti-cancer quality and the ability to increase our metabolism (新陈代谢). So, don't worry if you love spicy food. It seems that chilies are actually good for us—except for the Carolina Reaper, perhaps.12.

They are used as painkillers and there are some researches showing that they promote weight loss,” said Agustin Zsogon from a Brazilian university, a co-author of a new article arguing for the benefits of engineering hot tomatoes.Writing in the journal Trends in Plant Science, the researchers say peppers are difficult crops to grow and low productive. Worse still, it is tricky to keep the pungency of the fruits table. By contrast, tomato production is high and the plant is well-studied. “You could produce the capsaicinoids in a more cost-effective manner,” said Zsogon.Tomatoes and peppers developed from a common ancestor, but separated about 19 million years ago. “All these genes to produce capsaicinoids exist in the tomato, they are just not active,” said Zsogon. “Using gene-editing technology, it is likely to switch these genes back on in tomatoes, making the fruit more special”, he said.4. Why are the tomatoes made hot by the researchers?A. To test the gene-editing technologyB. To improve the amount of the tomatoesC. To explore ways to harvest more capsaicinoids.D. Under the surface, the earthquake caused strong currents that swept away and mostly killed off diverse ecosystems of creatures living along the Kaikoura underwater canyon. As a result, whales had to dive deeper and longer to find food—“a major shift” in their behavior, says co-author Liz Slooten, a marine biologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand. The impact earthquakes have on land animals has been well documented, but scientists know ly little about what happens underwater. Such research is important for government agencies, which may need to take recent earthquakes into consideration when considering fishing quotas(限额), notes Rochelle Constantine, a marine mammal ecologist at the University of Auckland. The canyon’s upper reaches are rich in creatures, supplying food for the fish that make up the whales’ diet. So when these smaller life forms were washed away, it had “severe consequences for the community around there”, says study co-author Will Rayment. “That effect flowed all the way through the food chain.”As part of their ongoing study, the scientists were tracking 42 individual whales. After the earthquake, in all, the team managed to record data on 40 whales, showing that the abundance of whales in the general area didn’t change after the earthquake. However, the whales changed how they used their habitat.A year after the earthquake, the researchers observed the whales returning to their previous surface-breathing intervals. This could have been because the communities of animals that make up the whales’ food began to recover. “It gives you an idea of how resilient(有复原力的)these deep-sea communities are,” says Rayment. But he and his colleagues will continue long-term monitoring to see if there are effects they missed. Whale activity in the area had already been declining, though it’s unknown whether it is due to natural changes in food abundance, whale-watching tourism, fishing, or warming ocean temperatures. “There is something going on in Kaikoura,” says Rayment.8. What happened after the Kaikoura earthquake in the Kaikoura canyon?A. Several destructive tsunamis struck the area.B. Whales had to swim to other oceans to find food.C. Nearly all marine creatures in Kaikoura were killed off.D. Strong currents washed away many smaller creatures.9. Which is one of the findings of the study?A. Earthquakes can make it easier for whales to find food.B. The whales changed their habitat after the earthquake.C. It usually takes whales a year to adapt to their new diet.D. The number of whales in the area dropped sharply after the quake.10. What does Rochelle Constantine think of the study?A. It can help government agencies to make some decisions about fishing.B. It can help government agencies to solve problems in the fishing industry.C. It is a breakthrough in research on what happens underwater after an earthquake.D. It offers a detailed description of the impact earthquake have on marine mammals.11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Something is affecting the whale activity in Kaikoura.B. Fishing quotas have been increasing in recent years.C. The team missed some effects in the research process.D. The scientists will continue studying earthquakes.DIn order to develop the pandemic-stricken economy, China recovered the street vendors(商贩)in a new nation-wide method known as “street stall economy'', allowing residents to set up open-air shops on the sidewalks or other available public spaces.Street vendors were once an important part ofChina's economy and urban landscape. However, sinceChina's economy took off in the last decade, street vendors have gradually disappeared from the streets and many of them opened shops of their own.Fast forward to today, street vendors have come into our sight again after cities such asChengduand Yantai succeeded in creating hundreds of thousands of jobs by giving street stalls permission to operate.China's tech industry was quick to jump on the street vendor trend, with tech giants including Alibaba, Tencent, Meituan and flocking todish outcheap loans, offer support and payment solutions to millions of owners of newly established small businesses.Ant Financial, Alibaba's fintech arm, promised its mobile wallet app Alipay will give interest-free loans to 30 million vendors, and 70 billion RMB of interest-free credit line to consumers to make purchases everywhere, including street vendors. provided 50 billion RMB worth of quality goods for street vendors, and provided each one of them with a maximum 100,000 RMB interest-free loan to stock up.Tencent's WeChat announced to offer payment solutions, marketing supports and even training for up to 50 million street vendors, with the end goal of digitally transforming them to increase their income.Guangzhoucity partnered with WeChat this month to hold a live streaming shopping festival to improve sales of local produce. In attempts to promote various live streaming platforms, many tech CEOs also made their own live streamed e-commerce debuts(首次亮相)selling goods coming from all over the country.12. 安徽长丰县2016高考英语书面表达【二轮】新练(3)书面表达(满分25分)请阅读下面短文,并按要求以Our Life Rests on Our Choice为题,用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。
Life is a matter of choice. Seemingly, it means a choice of concrete (具体的) things. But in fact, it means choosing a way of life. Life is to be lived and enjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the threat from the life-and death disease --- SARS. Yet, even during those dreadful times, some suffering people remained optimistic. Instead of wearing white masks, some people turned to colorful ones, and thus displayed a happy mood. And some creative people dubbed SARS to mean “SMILE AND REMAIN SMILING.” People who survive these kinds of circumstances decide in their minds to carry on in spite of the hardships.Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoid unexpected disasters and adversities (逆境), we do have the right to choose to live optimistically, to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approach life that day.【写作内容】1.用约30个单词写出上文的概要;2.用约120个词就“Our Life Rests on Our Choice” 谈谈你的看法和感受,内容包括:(1)简要叙述你对“Our Life Rests on Our Choice”的理解;(2)请举例说明你会选择怎样的人生态度;(3)简要叙述你这样选择的理由。
