【普及】教你分清Abbey、Cathedral、Chapel和Church⼤⼤⼩⼩的教堂遍布英国的各个⾓落，静静矗⽴在繁华城市的街头，或是掩映于村落的树影⼭麓中。

⽆论你是虔诚的教徒，古⽼建筑的迷恋者，还是只是四处旅⾏的游客，教堂威严⼜平静的魅⼒，都能带给你以极⼤的享受。

其中有些教堂的艺术成就也是相当的⾼，⽐如St. Paul’s Cathedral、Westminster Abbey还有York Minster等等。

可是细⼼的朋友⼀定发现了⼀个问题，那就是，中⽂我们可以都叫教堂，但是英⽂咋不都叫Church呢？这个问题也困扰了我好久。

除了Church以外，还有Chapel、Cathedral、Abbey和Basilica到底这都是啥，有什么区别啊？我们从最⼩的开始说吧~ChapelChapel是所有教堂建筑中最⼩的结构，在中⽂中的正式翻译是“⼩堂”。

诶有些同学问了，说不是叫“礼拜堂”么？也对也不对，因为“礼拜”⼀词是在新教中专⽤的，⽽不在天主教中使⽤，然⽽天主教堂也是有Chapel的，因此“⼩堂”更为准确。

这个⼩堂啊，就是纪念不同圣徒所建的房⼦，甚⾄也可以是在⼤教堂的⼩回廊中分割出的⼩房间，⽐如Westminster Abbey中的著名的“爱德华⼩堂”，和伦敦塔⽩塔旁的Chapel of St. John Evangelist，这种⼩堂是⼀般没有本堂神⽗的。

Church这个Church才是我们⼀般最熟知的词，⼴义所说的“教堂”，可以看作是所有宗教活动（如弥撒）发⽣场所的统称。

⽽事实上，church更适合被翻译成教会，不仅仅单指⼀座建筑，⽽是堂区所在了。

Cathedral我们常听到对于Cathedral的翻译是“⼤教堂”，难道⼤⼀点的教堂就叫Cathedral么？答案是否定的，要不这个“⼤”也没法规定啊……其实Cathedral的正确翻译是“主教座堂”。

它的原意是指“主教的座位”，是⼀个教区⾥主教所在的地⼉。

但是后来正如许多人感受到的，这些ladies们八卦的同时，更多会表现出对镇里大小事务的关心，对邻居的关爱。

有说法是，她们“错误”地以为觉得自己是比较高贵的ladies。

但是我觉得并没有“错误”。

也许从social status来说，她们真不算什么noble的人，也不富有。

但是她们的确是respectable ladies。

她们严格要求自己的品行，恪守principles，坚持她们认为Nobel的行为，虽说有时有点滑稽，但是一方面没损害别人的利益，另一方面的确也体现出一种向往追求高贵的精神。

这样的例子在剧中有很多，从一开始为手术contribute candles, 到送上尉的女儿出殡，到后来最为震惊地大家筹钱给Matty . 而且还很considerate，不让Matty知道是她们给的钱，而且还假装很支持她开茶叶店。

练口语的好材料：美剧VS英剧

推荐几部适合英语学习的美剧和英剧学习英语的材料太多了，个人觉得美剧在作为学习的效用上超过了欧美电影，因为其持续的时间长，可以对一个范围主题内的英语内容进行长时间的反复学习，需要一直重复某些内容，有利于英语输出能力的培养，例如写作和口语。

另外由于趣味性，和生活化的内容，学习的适应性也大于各大欧美媒体的有声新闻。

个人认为美剧而言，最好的学习材料是老友记Friends 和绝望主妇Desperate Housewives。

可能有的人认为这两部比较容易，但是对于口语来说却不是这样。

这两部戏的口音比较纯正，发音清晰，而且语速适中，比较适合模仿，而且内容和词汇量都很适中，没有太大的难度，正是口语学习模仿的好材料。

就是听力来说也可以应付一般的日常的听力了，对付较难或者不熟悉的内容也可以较快的适应。

对于以下11部美剧的评价：1. Friends：《老友记》是一部很好的帮助我们学习英语口语及常用短语、日常用品的单词的连续剧，就我个人而言，我会在第一遍不看字幕过一遍，第二遍借助字幕理解第一遍不清楚的地方，第三遍把印象深的短语句子写下来，反复读记，第四遍再过一遍。

比如：snow-in-a-can 雪花罐；working on commission 赚佣金；look no further！不要再找了；take you forever to find ...(要花费很长时间找到某件物品)2. Desperate housewives：《绝望的主妇》时而压抑、时而诙谐、人物性格刻画得鲜明，只是觉得剧情不是那么贴近生活，不过里面的句子还有哲理性，几个主演的英语也是非常标准，是一部学习英语值得推崇的super soup。

3. How I met your mother：《老爸老妈的浪漫史》也算比较适合学习口语的剧集，青年人的话语比较多一些，本年度最佳的情景喜剧。

4. Sex and the city：《欲望都市》是很有内涵的片子，不是一般肥皂剧比得了的。

DOWNTON ABBEY
