It is something that all humans have, and it tells the body what to do. DNA is the reason that we look like our parents, because we get some of their DNA to make our own. People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time.In 1860, Mr. Mendel discovered why we look the same as other people in our family. It is because of small things called “genes” in our body. In 1953, two scientists, Watson and Crick, found out that those small parts are really messages. They’re written in the DNA with a special language. In 1961, another two scientists found the first “word” that they could understand in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell to build its parts. So far, scientists have found all the words in the DNA map, but we still do not understand what they all d o. By understanding what just one “word ”means, we can help to save people from several illness. So the more we understand, the more doctors will be able to do.Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine and help sick people. Other people worry that when we learn more “words” and find out more information, we will use it in the wrong way.16. Mr. Mendel discovered ____.A. DNA is a map of bodyB. the first word in DNAC. what DNA doesD. genes in human body17. Since 1961, scientists have ____.A. clarified the function of all the words in the DNA map.B. discovered medicines for longevity.C. found all the words about DNA.D. understood that genes are written in the DNA with a special language.18. If we understand more “words” in the DNA map, we can make ____.A. better medicineB. more jobs for themC. maps for themD. them attractive19. Which of the followings statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?A. We look like our parents because of “genes” in our body.B. We have understood what all the words in the DNA maps do.C. DNA is the whole “map” of the human body.D. DNA tells the cell to build its parts.20. People think generally this research about DNA is ____.A. ridiculousB. astonishingC. worthlessD. beneficialPassage 2Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.“We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.“Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is part of the ageing process.”What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s.“This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart,” said Goldspink. The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that womenalso need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.21. The underlined wo rd “longevity” in the second paragraph probably refers to “____”.A. healthB. long lifeC. agingD. effect22. The text mainly talks about ____.A. men’s heart cellsB. women’s aging process caused by heart cellsC. the gender differenceD. the effects of gender difference to heart aging23. According to the text, the UK scientists have known that ____.A. women have more cells than men when they are bornB. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beatC. the female’s heart loses few of th e cells with ageD. women needn’t to do exercise to prevent aging problem24. If a man wants to live longer, a man should ____.A. enable his heart to beat much fasterB. find out the reason for ageingC. exercise regularly to keep his heart healthyD. prevent his cells from being lost25. We can know from the passage that ____.A. the reason why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart has been found outB. scientists are on the way to finding out why the female heart loses more of the cellsC. the te am had found out that the health of men’s heart can be improvedD. women over 70 could lose more heart cells than those at the age of 20Passage 3Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and animals possess, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear did not, a child would burn itself again and again, because fear would not warn the child to keep away from the fire that had burnt him or her before. A really fearless soldier-and some do exist-is not a good soldier because he is soon killed;and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which men and animals might soon die out.In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: a plane may crash on your house, or ants may eat away some of the wood in your roof, and they later may fall on you, or you may get cancer! The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent a plane from crashing into your house, and you may not want to go and live in a desert where there are no plants. In this case, fear has given you its warning; you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of this particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.26. Children would play with fire until their hands were burnt away if____.A. they were not well educated at schoolB. they had never played with fire beforeC. they had no sense of painD. they were fearful of pain27. Human beings will be extinct if ____.A. they use fear to guide their lifeB. there is too much dangerC. fear rules themD. there are not fear and pain28. People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding danger because____.A. they have gained experienceB. they are warned of the danger and take quick actionC. they jump out of the way in timeD. they are calm in face of danger29. What is implied but not stated in the passage?A. too much fear is unnecessary.B. Fear is always something helpfulC. Fear is something that can be avoidedD. Fear ought to be used as our guide in our life.30. The best title for this passage should be ____.A. No Pains, No GainsB. Pains and ActionsC. The value of FearD. The Reason Why People FearPassage 4Summer Cultural Exploration in FranceThe Summer Cultural Exploration program in Amboise, France, provides students with the opportunity to study French in a friendly historic atmosphere while experiencing a taste of French culture.AmboiseAmboise is a charming small town on the Loire River in central France.
The Function of the Heart。
The heart is an essential organ in the human body. Itis a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the cells and removing waste products. The heart is located in the chest, between the lungs, and is about the size of a fist. The heart has four chambers: the right atrium, theright ventricle, the left atrium, and the left ventricle. The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the body and pumps it into the right ventricle. The right ventricle then pumps the blood to the lungs, where it is oxygenated. The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungsand pumps it into the left ventricle. The left ventricle then pumps the blood out to the rest of the body. The heart is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, which regulates the heart rate and the strength of theheart's contractions. The sympathetic nervous system increases the heart rate and the strength of the contractions, while the parasympathetic nervous system slows down the heart rate and the strength of the contractions. The heart also has an electrical system that controls the rhythm of the heartbeats. The sinoatrial node (SA node) is the natural pacemaker of the heart, and it generates electrical impulses that cause the heart to beat. The electrical impulses travel through the atria and reach the atrioventricular node (AV node), which delays the impulses before they reach the ventricles. This delay allows the atria to contract before the ventricles, which maximizes the efficiency of the heart's pumping action. The heart is a vital organ that plays a crucial role in maintaining the body's overall health. It is important to take care of the heart by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Regular check-ups with a doctor can also help detect any potential heart problems early on, which canimprove the chances of successful treatment. In conclusion, the heart is a remarkable organ that is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. It has four chambers, an electrical system, and is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. It is important to take care of the heart to maintain overall health and wellbeing.。

Riders attempt to keep hold oftheir water horses long enough to makeit to the finish line. Some riders live; manydie. At nineteen, Sean Kendrick is thereturning champion. He’s a young manof few words, and if he has any fears, hekeeps them buried deep, where no oneelse can see them.Puck Connolly is different. She nevermeant to ride in the Scorpio Races. Butfate hasn’t given her much of a chance. Soshe enters the competition—the first girlever to do so. She is in no way preparedfor what is going to happen.DisCussioN PoiNTs1. What did Sean Kendrick notice was different about his father on the day he waskilled? What would you do if you noticed a close family member or friend notacting like him or herself?2. How many people live on Thisby? How would you describe the physicalcharacteristics of the island, and how do they contribute to the narrative?3. Water is prominently featured throughout the story. Name three things that thewater symbolizes.4. When they first meet, Sean tells Puck to keep her pony off the beach. Why do youthink he says this to her? Was he looking out for her or only for himself?5. The recurring themes of trust and love run throughout the story. Sean warns Pucknot to trust Corr, yet he loves him. Do you think it is possible to love without trust? Why or why not?calm Corr, Sean ties knots in his mane. He always ties the knots in the same uence of numbers. What were the numbers and what do they represent?Sean trust Corr? Do you think he should have trusted him? If you were in Sean’s ition would you be able to put your faith in a water horse?w did Puck get the money to buy better grains to feed Dove? Do you think Puck’s ions were justified? Why or why not? Dou think Puck’s mom would have supported her decision to join the race? Is there y evidence in the story that shows Puck’s mom may have supported her decision race?s Mutt Malvern jealous of Sean Kendrick, or do you think that he was just a bully?g Gratton mentioned that she did not think everyone was meant to live on Thisby. at did she mean by this? On Thisby it’s lessabout wanting, and more about being.” What do you think she feels are thedifferences between “wanting” and “just being?”20. Why did Puck think that riding a water horse in the race was disloyal to her parents?24. Benjamin Malvern is depicted as a spiteful, mean, and unloving man. Does he haveany good qualities? Do you think that a person can be truly bad?25. Sean shares his winning strategy with Puck: “There are many people on horsebacktrying to prove themselves. They haven’t discovered yet that it’s not the fastest who made it to race day. You only have to be the fastest of those who are left.” Explain Sean’s theory. Do you agree or disagree with it? Did Puck follow his advice?26. George Holly was an outsider, yet he seemed to take the place of Sean’s father. Inmany ways he was the antithesis of Benjamin Malvern. Compare and contrast the two men’s personalities and their actions toward Sean.27. Who did you think had the biggest advantage in the Scorpio Races? Do you think it’seasier to compete at something as the frontrunner or the underdog? Have you ever felt this pressure?28. Throughout the story, Sean’s words and actions inspire Puck. Describe two of theseinstances.29. When Puck goes to settle her debt with Mr. Malvern, she also asks him for a job.Why does she want to work for him? Is this something that you think you could ever do? Why or why not?30. What is the significance of Sean’s statement: “My father rode him and my father losthim, and then I found him again. He’s the only family I have.”31. Why do you think Corr returned to Sean instead of returning to the sea?32. If you were in Sean’s position and had to race against Puck in a Scorpio Race, howwould you feel? Would you want to beat her?33. How did the Scorpio Races help the people of Thisby? Were there any negativeconsequences from the tourists coming to town? Would you consider visiting Thisby if you could?34. How does reading both Puck’s and Sean’s narratives make the story more complete? How would the story have been different if the reader only heard it told from either Puck’s or Sean’s point-of-view?35. When Corr stayed with Sean in the water, he saved his life and proved his devotionto Sean. When Sean released Corr back into the sea, he showed his love for Corr in return. Sometimes we have to let animals and people go even if we love them. Do you agree with this? Has there ever been a time when you had to let someone or something go even though you didn’t want to?36. Do you think that Thisby should hold the Scorpio Races every year? Do you thinkthe races truly preserve the culture, or is it a dangerous and archaic tradition? What would you do if you lived on Thisby—would you race?37. What year does The Scorpio Races take place—do you think it takes place in the pastor the future?
Windows2000 advanced Server

Heartbeat is not as good as action. This is a very common saying in Chinese, and it means that instead of just feeling excited or moved by something, it's better to take action and actually do something about it. I think this is a very important principle to live by, and I havedefinitely experienced the truth of it in my own life. One example of this is when I was in middle school, I had a crush on a classmate. I would always feel my heart race whenever I saw them, and I would daydream abouttalking to them and getting to know them better. However, I never actually did anything about it. I never worked up the courage to strike up a conversation or ask them out on a date. As a result, nothing ever came of my feelings, and I regret not taking action when I had the chance.Another example is when I wanted to learn how to playthe guitar. I would often watch videos of people playing amazing songs on the guitar, and I would feel so inspired and moved by their talent. However, I never actually took the step to sign up for lessons or practice on my own. As a result, I never made any progress in learning the guitar, and my passion for it eventually faded away. These experiences have taught me that it's not enough to just feel excited or passionate about something. It's important to take action and make an effort to pursue our dreams and desires. Whether it's asking someone out on a date, learning a new skill, or pursuing a career goal, we have to take the initiative and put in the work to make it happen.

Heartbeat is not as good as action. This is a very true saying. Sometimes we are attracted by something or someone, but we don't take action to pursue it, which is a pity. For example, I once had a crush on a girl in my class. I thought she was very beautiful and had a good personality. However, I never dared to talk to her or express my feelings. As a result, I missed the opportunity to get to know her better and maybe even start a relationship with her.In fact, this kind of thing happens a lot in our lives. We are often hesitant or afraid to take action, even though we really want something. Maybe it's because we are afraid of failure or rejection, or we are just too comfortable with our current situation. But we should remember that if we don't take action, we will never know what could have happened. So, if you have a dream or a goal, don't just let it be a fantasy. Take action to make it a reality. If you like someone, don't just admire them from afar. Talk to them and get to know them better. If you want to learn a new skill, don't just think about it. Take a class or find a tutor to help you. Only by taking action can we achieve our goalsand live a fulfilling life.
