Ever since this planet has developed, it has surprised us human beings. No matter how much we human beings have developed technologically, we cannot ever create this kind of natural planet. The human race can only discover some amazing facts about it. Let us find out what some of themare. On September 13, 1922 El Azizia, a place in Libya, recorded a temperature of 136 degrees Fahrenheit. This was the highest temperature ever measured (测量) on the planet Earth. The highest waterfall in the world is Angel Falls in Venezuela, which drops from an amazing height of 3,212 feet. The waterfall drops over the edge of Auyantepui in the Canaima National Park. The gravitational pull (万有引力) of the Earth can be escaped if someone moves at a speed of 6.95 miles per second. At such a speed, one could travel from New York to Philadelphia in just 20 s econds. If the entire water in the world’s oceans evaporated, the salt we got from these oceans could cover the entire planet with a 500-foot deep layer of salt. The deepest lake on Earth is Lake Baikal in Russia. Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake in t he world, containing about 20% of the world’s unfrozen surface fresh water. The Andes in South America spreads over 4,525 miles. This is the longest mountain range (山脉) in the world.Did you know that the biggest valley in the world is the Grand Valley in Mesa County, Colorado and Grand County, Utah? It is about 30 miles (48 km) long and 5 miles (8 km) wide, along the Colorado River. The amazing facts about the earth are too many to be told completely above.1. The underlined word “evaporated” in Paragraph 2 most probably means“_____”.A. became salt graduallyB. became clear slowlyC. changed into warmer waterD. changed into gas or disappeared2. Where is the longest mountain range in the world?A. In Russia.B. In Libya.C. In South America.D. At the Oregon-Idaho border.3.We can learn from this passage that _____.A. Lake Baikal is the biggest lake in the worldB. the highest temperature ever measured was 136 ℃C. the Angel Falls drops from a height of 3,212 metersD. one end of the Grand Valley is in Colorado and the other in UtahBThis is an open letter to the three people who stole my handbag from the department store where I am employed as a shop assistant. When you took my bag, I don't know what you thought you were going to get. With my wages, there's not much left on a Tuesday. I hope the £5 was useful to you . I have informed the social security office so you won't be able to cash the child benefit next week. I hope that won't leave you too short. But if you really need a couple of pounds, I suppose you could always cash one of the two checks left in my check book. Of course,I phoned the bank right away and the check-casing card is no longer valid, so it won’t be much use to you.Actually I don't mind about the money too much. We single parents who work to support our families understand only too well what it means to be short of cash. However, I don’t suppose it went very far among the three of you. Sorry about that!I wish you had left the bag behind and just taken the wallet and check book. There were all kinds of papers in it, and notes and things that I really need. I really think that was very inconsiderate of you. I mean, how would you like something like that to happen to you?Well, perhaps the bag will turn up. It wasn't even an expensive one, just a plain, old brown leather shoulder bag. You probably dumped it in the nearest rubbish bin or threw it into the bushes. We've looked around, of course, but no one saw which way you went after you left the shop.I'm not really angry with you. I know how the pressures of modern living can affect us, but I am sad at the loss of my personal things. I feel violated and helpless. The police were very icy, and they just shruggedtheir shoulders. "It happens all the time," they told me. Some small comfort, I suppose. But I've lost just a little more faith in human nature. And as my young son said when I told him what had happened, "Why? Mummy, why us?" I couldn't answer that question. I wonder if you can.4.In writing Paragraph 2, the writer wants to .A. describe the contents of the bag in detail.B. give some suggestions to the three thievesC. tell the thieves hardly any money was availableD. state the fact that she was careless with the money5.Which of the following is the most valuable to the writer?A. To give the thieves a serious warningB. To complain about the fall of moralityC. To call people’s attention to their belongingsD. To express her affection for her valuable bagCParents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests they both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?’” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits(轨道).Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. And parent—child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood. But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There’s still a lot of strictness and authority(权威) on the part of parents out there, but there is a change h appening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these changing roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic(民主的) process that encourages everyone to have a say.“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after’ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily achieved by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”8. The underlined word “gulf” in Para.3 most probably means _________.A. distanceB. interestC. similarityD. cooperation9. The change in today’s parent-child relationship is _________.A. more confusion among children.B. less respect for parents from children.C. new equality between parents and children.D. more strictness and authority on the part of parents.10. The benefits are obvious; they firm the soil, soak up (摄取) extra water and take carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) our of the atmosphere. However, it now turns out that planting trees could add to global warming.Tree roots do a great job of keeping soil firmly on t he ground and out of the wind’s power. The problem is that some of those dust clouds play an important part in soaking up carbon dioxide.Huge dust storms blow out over the oceans from dry parts of North Africa and central Asia. Tons of dust are lifted and left as a thin film over the ocean surface. The dust fuels oceanic life.Dust from China is carried east and left in the Pacific Ocean. If a tree-planting program there is successful and the dust supply reduced, the net result may be that less carbon dioxide gets locked away in the ocean.Andy Ridgwell, an environmental scientist from the University of East Anglia, has spent the past few years studying dust and says his work “shows clearly the complexity of the system and the importance of not tinkering(粗劣地修补) with it without understanding the results. For this reason the need is to focus(集中) on cutting carbon dioxide giving off rather than monkeying (瞎弄) about with the land surface.”An American scientist, Robert Jackson, has shown that when native grassland areas are invaded(侵入) by trees, carbon is lost from the soil. “We are studying why the soil carbon disappears, but one theory is that trees do a lot more of their growing above ground compared to grasses, so less carbon goes directly into the soil fro m trees, ” says Jackson. In wet areas of the world, the gain from trees absorbing carbon dioxide above ground seems to舒中高一英语第4页(共8页)be outweighed(超过) by the loss of carbon from the soil below ground. Countries that plan to combatglobal warming by planting trees may have to think again.Solutions to environmental problems are often more complex than they first appear, and understanding the Earth’s climate is a very great challenge.12.People usually hold the opinion that .A.huge dust storms can destroy carbon dioxideB.huge dust storms can destroy the oceans on the earthC.huge dust storms can’t do anything beneficial for manD.planting trees is the only way to control huge dust storms13.Andy Ridgwell, the environmental scientist, believes that .A.dust plays a more important part than treesB.trees shouldn’t have been planted in dry placesC.carbon dioxide is harmful to everything on the earthD.environmental problems are more complex than expected14.R obert Jackson’s experiment proves that .A.grassland areas should be covered by forestsB.trees hold more carbon than grassesC.carbon can turn grass into dustD.less carbon can make trees grow faster15.The underlined w ord “combat” in the last paragraph means .A.learn about B.fight against C.live with D.give up第二节(共五小题,每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

ANew Zealand is an English-speaking country, but the government recognizes another language, too. This is the Maori language. English sailors began to visit New Zealand after 1770.They found the Maoris, a dark-skinned people, living there. They had come from islands in the Pacific Ocean 400 years before— in the 14th century. For a long time the British Government was not very interested in these far-away islands. It was made a British colony(殖民地) in 1840. In this year the first British people came to settle in the new country. More and more settlers came from Britain later. The Maoris were friendly to the first settlers. But soon the new settlers wanted the Maoris’ land. So in1844 there was fighting between them. This was the first of several wars between the two peoples. The next fifty years was very bad for Maoris. Many were killed in the wars. Many more died from diseases brought by the British. In 1840 there were 200,000 Maoris. By 1996 this number had fallen to 42,000.For many years, the British New Zealanders looked down upon the Maoris. In the 20th century the two peoples have lived in peace. They have equal rights and the Maori language is one of the languages of the country. Today there are about a quarter of a million Maoris, which is about 9% of the population. Most of them live in NorthIsland. They have a rich culture and a great love for singing and dancing.1. I don’t think so. “Health is the greatest wealth,” wise people say. You can’t be good at yo ur studies or work well when you are ill.If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold,or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor. The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funny story. An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn’t smoke more than one cigarette a day.A month later the gentleman came into the doctor’s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.“But you know, doctor,” he said, “it’s not easy to begin smoking at my age.”4. Mr sPrag, the mother, was told that I played chess; and she begged me to give her young son a game. ‘He's only ten.’she said, ‘I've been told that he plays quite well.’“Well,as you can guess, I wasn't too happy. A player likes the opponent (对手) to play as well as he does. But it was holiday time and I agreed to play. We placed the board (棋盘) in the garden. The game began. I hoped it would be quick──and so it was.“Isoon knew that David Prag was no learner. After ten minutes his sister came outside and began to play tennis against a wall. The boy seemed to lose interest in our game. He moved a piece (棋子) without care. I gave my attention to the board."“Call me when you are ready, Mr Watson,” he said.“When I was ready?I looked up.He had gone off to play with hi s sister.I studied the board──and found I was driven into corner. So it went on with David: a quick move, then tennis, back to the board, then back to his sister.
