But plenty of others, like me, have good intentions but get overloaded. I try my best, but some nights I just run out of time or brain power before finishing everything. Or I get stuck on a really hard problem and my parents can't help me. Does that mean I shouldn't get any credit at all for the parts I did complete?In my opinion, giving a straight zero for unfinished work is way too extreme. It doesn't recognize any of the effort I put in or knowledge I demonstrated on the portions I did do. If I missedjust one or two questions out of 20, is it really fair to act like I didn't even try at all? A zero implies zero effort, but often that's not the case - we gave it an honest shot but just couldn't cross the finish line for whatever reason.I think teachers should instead give partial credit based on what we did manage to finish. Like if I got 15 out of 20 questions right but didn't have time to attempt the last 5, instead of a zero I should get a 75% for the work I showed. That seems a lot more fair to me and motivates me to try my hardest to get as much done as possible.Maybe some teachers think giving zeros will make kids feel enough panic and fear that we'll be more motivated to always get it all done on time. But for me and lots of other students I know, it has the opposite effect - those zeros are so discouraging that we start feeling like we'll never be good enough no matter how hard we try. A harsh zero scores makes us want to give up altogether.Instead of punishing us so extremely, teachers should try to understand the reality of our lives and all the demands on us. A little empathy and flexibility, like accepting that some assignments may need to be turned in incomplete sometimes,would go a lot further in terms of reducing stress and keeping us engaged in the learning process.And teachers definitely shouldn't assume that incomplete work automatically means we weren't making an effort or don't care enough. Sometimes circumstances just get in the way despite our best intentions. Like one time, my baby sister got really sick during the night and my parents had to take her to the emergency room. Of course under those stressful conditions, with everyone getting low sleep and worrying about my sister's health, homework wasn't my top priority that night. But it wasn't because I was slacking off - stuff just comes up in life sometimes, even for kids.I also think teachers need to consider that different kids have different abilities, learning styles, and challenges. For some of us, certain school subjects come more naturally than others. So even when putting in a similar level of effort, we may be able to finish all problems in one subject area but get stuck and run out of time in another subject area that's harder for us. It doesn't seem right to penalize the whole assignment so harshly just because of a few problem areas we struggled with more.Lastly, giving zeros for incomplete work can reinforce a fixed mindset where kids start thinking they're either "good at" asubject or just "bad at it." But the reality is, we're still learning and developing our abilities. Harsh zeros can lead some kids to conclude "I'm no good at math" and then start tuning out or stop trying at all in that subject because they've decided they can't get better at it. But a growth mindset is so important - we need to feel like we can improve our skills through continued effort over time. Partial credit acknowledges our efforts and keeps us motivated to keep chipping away at it.So in conclusion, while I understand teachers' desire to hold us accountable for our work, giving a flat zero score for incomplete assignments is really demotivating and demoralizing for us students. It often doesn't reflect the real effort we put in. Partial credit for what we did complete is a much better policy that recognizes our hard work, keeps us engaged, reduces discouragement, and respects the realities of our lives as kids juggling many responsibilities.
