ALess than 60 percent of students now entering fouryear American colleges are likely to graduate. The completion rate is lower than almost any other wealthy country, and worst for poor and minority students. On Tuesday President Obama gave a nationally broadcast speech to students about the importance of staying in school. He spoke on the first day of classes at a high school in Virginia. He talked about personal responsibility, and took himself as an example of someone who overcame difficulties.“My father left my family when I was two years old,and I was raised by a single mother who had to work and struggled at times to pay the bills and wasn’t always able to give us things the other kids had. There were times when I missed having a father in my life. There were times when I was lonely and felt like I didn’t fit in,” said President Obama. But he told students that problems in their own lives should not stop them from learning.“There’s no excuse for talking back to your teacher,or cutting class or dropping out of school. There’s no excuse for not trying.”This was not the first presidential speech to students.Ronald Reagan spoke from the White House in 1988.And George H.W.Bush spoke from a school in Washington in 1991.But many conservatives(保守派) criticized plans for the speech. Some called it “socialized education” or federal interference(干预)in local schools.Others feared it would be too political. Some schools decided not to show the speech. But the White House released(公布) the text on Monday, and that calmed a lot of critics. On Sunday,on the CBS program “Face the Nation”,Education Secretary Arne Duncan said 30 percent of students do not graduate from high school. He called the dropout rate “staggering(令人难以置信的)”.It represents more than a million students every year who entered the ninth grade but did not complete the 12th grade.1.President Obama gave a nationally broadcast speech on Tuesday to .A.criticize the students who talked back to their parentsB.tell the students how he struggled to go to school in his childhoodC.encourage students to drop outD.persuade the students to go on with their studies even if they have problems答案D解析细节理解题。

高考阅读理解冲刺练习题附答案高考阅读理解冲刺练习题原文Laws that would have ensured pupils from five to 16 received a full financial education got lost in the wash up. An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.At school the children are taught to add up and subtract(减法) but, extraordinarily, are not routinely shown how to open a bank account —let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial education a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to 16 should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the Children, Schools and Families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called “wash-up” earlier this month — the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed. Consumer and parent groups believe financial education has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum. As the Personal Finance Education Group (Pfeg) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven- to11-year-olds are savers but by the time they get to 17, over half of themare in debt to family and friends. By this age, 26% see a credit card or overdraft(透支) as a way of extending their spending power. Pfeg predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school.”The UK has been in the worst financial recession(衰退)for generations. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.高考阅读理解冲刺练习题61. No one can takeit entirely to themselves; nor is itforeignto any one. This was the decision of John Marshall, chief Justice of the United States from 1801 to1835. The Americans said that the seals wereAmerican possession because they often came into the Alaskan shores owned by the UnitedStates. International judges disagreed with this reasoning. 高考冲刺英语阅读理解课堂练答案解析6

高考冲刺英语阅读理解课堂练答案解析6

2020高考英语:阅读理解课堂练(3)Passage Five(The only way to travel is on foot)The past ages of man have all been carefully labeled by anthropologists. Descriptions like ‘Palaeolithic Man’, ‘Neolithic Man’, etc., neatly sum up whole periods. When the time comes for anthropologists to turn their attention to the twentieth century, the y will surely choose the label ‘Legless Man’. Histories of the time will go something like this: ‘in the twentieth century, people forgot how to use their legs. Men and women moved about in cars, buses and trains from a very early age. There were lifts and escalators in all large buildings to prevent people from walking. This situation was forced upon earth dwellers of that time because of miles each day. But the surprising thing is that they didn’t use their legs even when they went on holiday. They built cable railways, ski-lifts and roads to the top of every huge mountain. All the beauty spots on earth were marred by the presence of large car parks. ’The future history books might also record that we were deprived of the use of our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another, we failed to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird’s-eye view of the world – or even less if the wing of the aircraft happens to get in your way. When you travel by car or train a blurred image of the countryside constantly smears the windows. Car drivers, in particular, are forever obsessed with the urge to go on and on: they never want to stop. Is it the lure of the great motorways, or what? And as for sea travel, it hardly deserves mention. It is perfectly su mmed up in the words of the old song: ‘I joined the navy to see the world, and what did I see? I saw the sea.’ The typical twentieth-century traveler is the man who always says ‘I’ve been there.’ You mention the remotest, most evocative place-names in the world like El Dorado, Kabul, Irkutsk and someone is bound to say ‘I’ve been there’ –meaning, ‘I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else.’When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at someother place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you suspend all experience; the present ceases to be a reality: you might just as well be dead. The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives constantly in the present. For him traveling and arriving is one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical weariness. He knows that sound. Satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travellers.1.Anthorpologists label nowaday’s men ‘Legless’ because _______.A people forget how to use his legs.B people prefer cars, buses and trains.C lifts and escalators prevent people from walking.D there are a lot of transportation devices.2.Travelling at high speed means ________.A people’s focus on the future.B a pleasure.C satisfying drivers’ great thrill.D a necessity of life.3.Why does the author say ‘we are deprived of the use of our eyes’ ?A People won’t use their eyes.B In traveling at high speed, eyes become useless.C People can’t see anything on his way of travel.D People want to sleep during travelling.4.What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage?A Legs become weaker.B Modern means of transportation make the world a small place.C There is no need to use eyes.D The best way to travel is on foot.5. What does ‘a bird’s-eye view’ mean?A See view with bird’s eyes.B A bird looks at a beautiful view.C It is a general view from a high position looking down.D A scenic place. The only way to travel is on foot.【参考译文】旅游的唯一方法是走路。

(整理版高中英语)高考英语(阅读理解)25分钟冲刺训练(6)及答案解析

高考英语〔阅读理解〕25分钟冲刺训练〔6〕及答案解析(第***篇)Lisa was running late. Lisa, 25, had a lot to do at work, plus visitors on the way: her parents were coming in for Thanksgiving from her hometown. But as she hurried down the subway stairs, she started to feel uncomfortably warm. By the time she got to the platform,Lisa felt weak and tired —maybe it hadn’t been a good idea to give blood the night before, she thought. She rested herself against a post close to the tracks.Several yards away, Frank ,43, and his girlfriend, Jennifer, found a spot close to where the front of the train would stop. They were deep in discussion about a house they were thinking of buying. But when he heard the scream, followed by someone yelling,“Oh, my God, she fell in!〞Frank d idn’t hesitate. He jumped down to the tracks and ran some 40 feet toward the body lying on the rails. “No ! Not you ! 〞his girlfriend screamed after him.She was right to be alarmed. By the time Frank reached Lisa,he could feel the tracks shaking and see the light coming. The train was about 20 seconds from the station. It was hard to lift her. She was just out. But he managed to raise her the four feet to the platform so that bystanders could hold her by the arms and drag her away from the edge. That was where Lisa briefly regained consciousness, felt herself being pulled along the ground, and saw someone else holding her purse.Lisa thought she’d been robbed. A woman held her hand and a man gave his shirt to help stop the blood pouring from her head. And she tried to talk but she couldn’t,and that was when she realized how much pain she was in.Police and fire officials soon arrived, and Frank told the story to an officer. Jennifer said her boyfriend was calm on their 40minute train ride downtown—just as he had been seconds after the rescue, which made her think about her reaction at the time. “I saw the train coming and I was thinking he was going to die,〞 she explained.[语篇解读] 本文讲述了Frank在地铁站,冒着被列车轧死的危险救助了因身体虚弱而失去知觉的Lisa的经过。

高考英语阅读理解冲刺(6)及答案

天津市河东区2014高考英语阅读理解冲刺(6)及答案阅读理解-Today, the world is rapidly urbanizing. With half of the world population expected to live in cities by the early part of the 21st century, the Shanghai 2010 World Expo's focus on a better city bears profound meaning. What might future cities look like 28 years from now? Here are some scenarios: things to come, things to go.Zero wasteWaste disposal is one of the biggest headaches for cities.Apart from recyclable waste, everything is buried or incinerated, only to pollute the environment.Plastic waste remains underground for several decades. The world produces much more garbage that it can dispose of.Now at the Expo, all waste is delivered to a compression station where the waste is sorted, filtered, decontaminated, deodorized and compressed before finally being disposed of at designated spots. In Beijing, people living in the Asuwei area turn their household waste into organic fertilizers which are used to grow plants at residence communities. No more transportation problems during Spring FestivalThe Spring Festival, the most important Chinese holiday when everyone returns home, has caused headaches for millions of Chinese.More than 2 billion people travel at the same time, making obtaining travel tickets and the journey difficult. But in 28 years.Spring Festival travel may not be a problem at all.China plans to have more than 120,000 kilometers of railway and a rapid transportation network that will serve 90 percent of the population by 2020.And because most of China will be cities, people will not have to go to other places to find a job, so migration will no longer be so large-scale.Newspapers to disappearAmerican scholar Philip Meyer predicts that newspaper will come to an end in 2043.Utagawa Reizou, former editor-in-chief of The Mainichi Daily News.believes that the newspaper will be gone in 2030.This kind of prediction may worry those in print news business. In the U.K., the circulations of national newspapers are declining.Major Japanese newspapers have gone into debt.In the US, declining circulations and ad revenues have forced several newspapers to stop printing paperEditionsMedia tycoon Rupert Murdoch thinks the future of media relies on interaction through the Internet. In the future, digital newspapers will be sent to portal web terminals through wirelessly.Readers can discuss issues with journalists and editors.Information will move faster.Oil to run outIn August 2009, Fatih Birol, chief economist of the International Energy Agency, said that oil is running out faster than expected and that the world will likely feel the tightness in supply in the next five years.Scientists have found substitutes for oil as fuel, coal, natural gas, solar power, nuclear power and even water can replace oil as sources of energy.Flammable ice reserves alone can support humans for the next 1,000 years.71.By now, the world population in cities has grown to about _____.A.6.9 billion B.0.75 billion C.3.5 billion D.1.3 billion 72.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Everything buried or incinerated, besides recyclable waste, pollutes the environment.B.People deal with their household waste in an environmental-friendly way in the Asuwei area, Beijing.C.More than 2 billion people suffer from headaches during the Spring Festival in China.D.By 2020, 90 percent of the population will have to go to other places to find a job.73.According to the American predictor Philip Meyer, what will happen in 2043?A.Newspaper will disappear.B.Japan has to stop printing newspaper.C.Digital newspaper will be sent to portal web terminals.D.Information will move faster.74._____ can replace oil as sources of energy in the future.A.Coal and natural gas B.Solar power and nuclear powerC.Water and flammable ice reserves D.All the above75.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A.The Shanghai 2010 World Expo B.What will city life be like in 28 yearsC.A rapidly urbanizing world D.Things to come, things to go【参考答案】71-75 CBADB【2014界黑龙江省哈三中高三上第三次验收考试】BPeople who averaged fewer than seven hours of sleep per night in the weeks before being exposed to the cold virus were nearly three times as likely to get sick as those who averaged eight hours or more, a new study found.Researchers used frequent telephone interviews to track the sleep habits of more than 150 men and women aged 21 to 55 over the last few weeks. Then they exposed the subjects to the virus, quarantined (检疫隔离) them for five days and kept track of who got sick.Besides sleeping more, sleeping better also seemed to help the body fight illness: Patients who fared better on a measure known as “sleep efficiency”—the percentage of time in bed that you’re actually sleeping—were also less likely to get sick. The results held true even after researchers adjusted for elements such as body-mass index, age, sex, smoking and pre-existing antibodies (抗体) to the virus. The researchers aren’t exactly sure why sleeping better makes you less likely to develop a cold. But they do try to give an answer: “Sleep disturbance influences the regulation of symptom mediators (调节因子) that are released in response to infection.” In plain English, maybe tossing and turning when you’re infected with the cold virus contributes to the symptoms that define a cold. The researchers were based at Carnegie Mellon, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Virginia, and the study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.60. According to the passage, what does the underlined word “subjects” mean in paragraph 2?A. areas of knowledge in a schoolB. people being studied in an experimentC. research topicsD. animals being tested61. Sometimes these rights are called "due process of law". In using these rights, a person should have the help of a lawyer. You have a right to protect against unreasonable searches and seizures. The police generally may not search you or your home, or take things you own, without a "warrant". A warrant is a paper which states, very exactly , the place to be searched and the things to be taken. Sometimes, however, the police will not need a warrant to search you or your property. If an officer sees youcommitting a crime, or if he has a good reason to believe you have committed a serious crime, he may arrest you and search you and the area right around you without a warrant. If you invite a police without a warrant to come into your house and he finds proof of crime, the evidence may be used against you in court. If you do not want an officer to search you or your home and he does not have a warrant, tell him that you do not give him the right to search. However, if the officer will not listen, do not try to stop him. It is dangerous to resist and it may be illegal to do so. Any evidence which a policeman gets during an unlawful search and seizure cannot be used against you.Police officers must act reasonably and fairly at all times. They should use physical force only when it is needed to arrest someone to enforce a law. They may not use physical violence to "teach someone a lesson".43. According to the passage, a "warrant" is______.A. an identification cardB. an access cardC. a special licenseD. an official written order【参考答案】43-46 DACB【2014界黑龙江省哈三中高三上第三次验收考试】CThe Happiest Cities On EarthIf you’re looking for a cheery destination for your next vacation, consider these four spots and get ready to take notes on how to really live the good life.SingaporeWith one of the highest population densities(密度)in the world and residents known for being workaholics, it’s hard to imagine the city-state of Singapore having one of the happiest populations on earth. And yet in a recent survey, 95% of them said they were either very happy or quite happy. They give their city high marks for cleanliness and safety—subways are pristine (洁净的) and unfailingly arrive on time, and police are seen as helpful and good at their jobs. What’s more, they feel they can count on their neighbours—all 5.1 million of them.Arhus, DenmarkThe residents of Arhus cheerfully part with 68% of their income in taxes, knowing that in return they will be guaranteed free healthcare, free daycare, and a top-notch (第一流的) education for their children. An energetic city of 300,000 with a lively cultural scene and a diverse number of religions represented, the sense of equality (the range in incomes is narrow), as well as easy access to the nearby sea and surrounding countryside, make Arhus seem more like a small town.San Luis Obispo, CAAccording to a 2008 Gallup-Healthways study, people who live in San Luis Obispo are more likely than residents of other U.S. cities to smile and experience joy and are less likely to experience pain or depression. About 64,000 of the 260,000 people in the greater metropolitan area (都市区), located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, volunteer at over 11,000 non-profit organizations.Few journeys to work are longer than 10 minutes (one reason its members rank in the upper third for job satisfaction), so “it’s easy to be involved,”resident Pierre Rademaker said. Business signs are unobtrusive (不显眼的) by law, fewer than 11% of residents smoke—the lower rate in the U.S.—there are lots of bike lanes, and the city’s plaza draws crowds of people for free concerts on summer Fridays. What’s not to love?Monterrey, MexicoThe people of Monterrey don’t enjoy high household incomes or access to good healthcare. Instead, there’s a profound sense of gratitude for the new political freedom enjoyed since the oppressive Institutional Revolutionary Party lost power in 2000—the first time in nearly a century—as well as an emphasis on social life over work.Another reason Monterrey residents may be so happy is their faith in God and family, and their ability to tough it out through bad times.“We laugh at sickness, poverty and even death,”says Basanez, a political scientist who lives inMonterrey. “We even have a holiday to celebrate death. November 2, the Day of the Dead, is one of the biggest holidays of the year.”63. According to the passage, what do the residents in the four cities have in common?A. All the residents can make great fortunes by working hard.B. The residents there are mostly educators.C. All the residents enjoy enough material wealth.D. The majority of the residents are satisfied with their current life.64. According to the passage, we can infer that _______.A. the people of Singapore expect their neighbours to come to their help when necessaryB. the people of Monterrey even observe one’s death on a special day of a yearC. the residents of Arhus happily pay 68% of their income for their children’s education feeD. the people who live in San Luis Obispo have job satisfaction because they can enjoy good workingconditions65. According to the passage which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A. The people of Monterrey didn’t enjoy political freedom until 2000.B. The residents in Singapore feel happy because of its low population density.C. The people of San Luis Obispo can enjoy free concerts in summer.D. Arhus is handy to the seaside and countryside.66. What can we learn from the underlined part “the sense of equality”?A. The residents of Arhus have no racial discrimination.B. Arhus is considered as a family sharing everything with each other.C. There is no wide gap between the rich and the poor in Arhus.D. The residents of Arhus can depend on their neighbours to help.【参考答案】63-66 DABC。
