While the trip sounds exciting, it would take years and years to reach your destination. So in the future, bedtime for astronauts may be more than a few hours of regular shut eye. They would have to sleep for years.European researchers are now conducting hibernation experiments. The study may help them understand whether humans could ever sleep through the years it would take for a spaceflight to distant planets."If there was an effective technology, it could make deep space travel a reality,"said Mark Ayre of the European Space Agency last month. What seems like a science fiction is not completely unlikely.Researchers have been able to use chemicals to put living cells into a sleep like state where they don’t age. They have now moved on to the small, non hibernating mammals (哺乳动物)like rats.A major challenge is the fact that cells can be very simple systems, whereas body organs are far more complex (复杂的)."It’s like moving from a simple Apple computer to a supercomputer," said Marco Biggiogera, a hibernation researcher at Italy’s University of Pavia.Just like bears and frogs, the hibernation of human beings would cause a person’s metabolism (新陈代谢)to lower so they would need less energy.Medical research, however, is just half of a spaceflight hibernation system. There is a challenge of designing a suitable protective shelter (栖身所).Such a shelter would provide the proper environment for hibernation, such as the proper temperature. It would also have to monitor (监控)life functions and serve the physiological needs of the hibernator.According to Ayre, the six person Human Outer Planets Exploration Mission (使命)to Jupiter’s moon (木星的卫星)Callisto, could be an opportunity to use human hibernation. The mission aims to send six persons on a five year flight to Callisto, where they will spend 30 days, in 2045.5.According to the article, the hibernation research _______.A.is just an idea B.is always a science fictionC.has already finished successfully D.has made some progress6.In a hibernating state, a person needs ________.A.less sleep B.more food C.less energy D.more movement7.The first try of the hibernation technologythe six person Human Outer Planets Exploration Mission to Jupiter’s moon Callisto.A.will be B.has been planned forC.is certain to be D.may be8.What is the best title of the article?A.Hibernation study for space travel B.Welcome to our space travelC.To hibernate, to live longer D.Welcome to the Milky Way非选择题一、短文改错How I dislike acting dishonest in exams! Suzhou classical gardens are parts of China's precious cultural heritage (遗产) (all the 9 gardens are on the list of World Cultural Heritage) as well as a necessary part of the life of Suzhou citizens, not to mention they are also world-famous tourism resorts (胜地). In fact, their unique historical and cultural background serves to contribute to their ranking among national parks. The earliest classical gardens in Suzhou can date back to the Song Dynasty. However, the gardens impress their visitors not only with their age-old history but also with their delicate scenes, particularly Canglang Pavilion, Zhuozheng Garden, Lion Grove and Liu Garden, the most famous four that represent different styles of dynasties of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing.In 1978, an imitation〔仿造物〕 of a Suzhou classical garden was set up by Chen Congzhou (the author of the book Suzhou Classical Gardens) in the City Museum of Art in New York, US, which was the first time ever to directly introduce Chinese ancient architecture to Westerners.9.________parks and gardens are selected as National Parks in the first group.A.9 B.8C.20 D.410.Which of the following statements about Suzhou classical gardens is NOT true?A.They are parts of China's precious cultural heritage.B.They are world-famous tourism resorts.C.They are a necessary part of the life of Suzhou citizens.D.They came into being at the same time.11.Which of the following can best explain the meaning of the underlined word "delicate"?A.astonishing B.deliciousC.beautiful D.impressive12.The first imitation of a Suzhou classical garden was set up in ________.A.London B.New YorkC.Paris D.TokyoOn November 14, 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt was on a hunting trip in Mississippi while trying to settle a line(边界) problem between Mississippi and Louisiana. Being an expert outdoorsman, he liked to hunt large animals. However, his hunt was going poorly that days, and he couldn’t seem to find anything worthy of firing his gun. His followers, trying to help him, caught a Louisiana black baby bear for the President to shoot, but he refused. The thought of shooting a bear that was tied to a tree did not seem sporting, so he spared the life of the baby bear and set it free.A famous political cartoonist for the Washington Star, Mr. Clifford Berryman, drew a cartoon titled, Drawing the Line in Mississippi, which used the story of the President refusing to shoot the bear. The cartoon in the Washington Star showed Teddy Roosevelt, gun in hand, with his back turned on a pretty baby bear. Morris Michtom, owner of a Brooklyn toy store, got the idea from the cartoon and make a toy bear. Planning to use it only as a display, he placed the bear in his toy store window, and next to it placed a copy of the cartoon from the newspaper. To Michtom's surprise, he was surrounded by customers eager to buy it. He asked for and received President Roosevelt's permission to use his name for the bears that he and his wife made, and the Teddy Bear was born! Michtom soon made Teddy bears by the thousands. The money from selling Teddy bears made him, in 1903, form the Ideal Toy Company.13.Why did Theodore Roosevelt come to Mississippi?A.To go on a hunting trip. Most young Japanese women simply don’t seem interested in having many children. Now what began in Japan is happening globally. As David Brooks wrote, birth rate is becoming smaller in much of the world, from Iran —1.7 births rate per woman —to Russian, where low birth rates connected with high death rates mean the population is already shrinking. And this includes US, which has long had higher birth rates than most developed nations. Aging countries will face the burden of caring for large elderly populations without a larger resource of young workers. It’s true that global aging is going to present some major challenges. Who will take care of the elderly? Will an older world be less active and slower to change and adapt? It’s all true. Sometimes I worry about a coming generational war over resources, just as I worry about how I will take care of my own parents in their old age, just as I worry about who might take care of me.But here’s the thing: an older world may have less pressure on the environment. As we all know, the environment is the real victim of overpopulation. So maybe a world that grows slower and grows older will put less pressure on the environment, and buy us a few more years to ensure our energy use, along with our birthrates, reaches a sustainable〔可持续的〕level. After all, we’re supposed to get smarter as we got older. Hopefully that holds true for the planet as well.17.The population issue in Japan was mentioned to ________.A.show young people’s preference to marriageB.introduce the topic of global birth rate becoming smallerC.indicate the deeper cause of Japan’s depressionD.emphasize the revolution of Japanese women18.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to David Brook?A.The birth rates all over the world are becoming smaller.B.The most developed countries have higher death rates.C.America is the only developed country with higher birth rate.D.Birth rate’s becoming smaller means a grea t risk to aging countries.19.Which will be caused by low birth rates according to the passage?A.Aging society. B.Environmental problems.C.High death rates. D.Low employment rates.20.What’s the author’s attitude to the worldwide birth rates becoming sma ller?A.Anxious. B.Disappointed.C.Hopeful. D.Doubtful.二、七选五Are you having trouble concentrating when you’re reading a book or listening to a lecture? This list of activities might help to improve your study habits.Make a List. Many people enjoy foods high in fats and sugars. 23. They might give you a temporary burst of energy. However, that energy is soon followed by a crash.Reduce Screen Time. Participating in a sport trains your brain to concentrate on specific tasks, and shut out other thoughts.A.Be active.B.Practice more.C.These foods can provide enough energy for focusing.D.But these foods can’t be helpful enough when it comes to focusing.E. Do you argue whether it’s cold outdoors or whether the car in front of you is going faster than the speed limit (限速)?If you get into such arguments, try to think about the story about the six blind men and the elephant. The first blind man who felt the elephant’s trunk (象鼻) said it was like a snake. The second who felt the elephant’s side said it was like a wall, while the third said it was like a spear( 矛) as he touched the animal’s tusk. The fourth, who took hold of the elephant’s tail insisted that it was like a rope. The fifth man said it looked liked a tree as he put his arms around one of the elephant’s legs. The last, who was tall and got hold of the elephant’s ears, said it was like a huge fan. Each man’s idea of the animal came from his own experience. So if someone disagrees with you about a “simple fact”, it’s often because his experience in the matter is different from yours. To see how hard it is for even one person to make up his mind about a “simple fact”, try this simple experiment. Get three large bowls. Put ice water in one. Put hot water in the second. Put lukewarm water (温水)in the third. Now put your left hand in the hot water. Put your right hand in the lukewarm water. Your right hand will tell you the water is cold. Your left hand will tell you it is hot.36. The man who touched the elephant’s ears must be very_______.A. heavyB. thinC. tallD. strong37. The underlined word “it” in the last line of the paragraph refers to _______.A. your left handB. your right handC. the waterD. the bowl38. What makes people think about simple facts differently?A. People’s wrong ideas.B. People’s different experience.C. Simple facts are different sometimes.D. People often disagree with each other.39. It can be inferred from the passage that we should__________.A. learn from the blind menB. not agree about simple factsC. never think about simple factsD. never decide anything with one sideBEach year the Pritzker Architecture Prize (普立兹克建筑奖) goes to a star designer with a long list of attractive buildings around the world. This year’s win ner is a little different.Shigeru Ban has designed museums, homes and concert halls. But Ban is best known for a more simple kind of work: the temporary (暂时的) buildings for people who became homeless after disasters.Ban may be the only designer in the world who makes buildings out of paper —cardboard paper tubes (管). Ban actually tested the strength of cardboard tubes, and said he was surprised by what he had discovered. He has used them to build temporary buildings in Japan, Haiti, China and elsewhere.“After a disaster, the building material is going to be more expensive,” Ban explains. “But the paper tube is actually not a building material. It is cheap and plentiful. We can get the material easily anywhere. And unlike costs for traditional building materials, the price of paper tubes doesn’t jump after an earthquake or flood. The tubes are also lightweight, so you don’t need heavy machines to work with them.”Ban started using cardboard paper tubes in the 1980s. At that time he had just graduated from the architecture school, and he was looking for a cheap substitute for wood. So he started reusing the paper cardboard tubes that were left over from rolls of paper in his office.Ban was born in Tokyo and studied architecture in the U.S. before moving b ack to Japan to start his practice. Some of Ban’s temporary buildings have bee permanent (永久的), like the paper church he built after the 1995 earthquake in Kobe, Japan.40. The author uses the first paragraph to .A. raise an argumentB. give an introductionC. give an exampleD. offer a description41. What is special about Shigeru Ban?A. He failed to get this year’s architecture prize.B. He graduated from the best architecture school in the U.S.C. He is good at building houses for homeless people.D. He builds special houses for special groups of people.42. Why did Shigeru Ban choose cardboard paper tubes?A. Because they are cheap and easy to take away.B. Because they are strong and last for a long time.C. Because they are plentiful and look very beautiful.D. Because they are mon and hard to break.43. What does the underlined word “substitute” probably refer to?A. A new way of building houses by using wood.B. A new method of producing cardboard paper tubes.C. A new kind of building material to take the place of wood.D. A new machine to produce a new kind of building material.CTwo men were sitting together in a plane. They were on a long journey. Their father died young and they had very little money to live on. Elizabeth and her sisters taught at school. Then a woman dying of cancer urged Elizabeth to study medicine, saying that a woman doctor would have saved her from her worst sufferings. Nearly everyone said a girl should not go to medical school, but she managed to enter Geneva College in New York State. She graduated in 1849 at the headof her class and received the first medical degree ever given to a woman.Next, Dr. Blackwell went to Paris. Her only chance of training was in a hospital where women came to have their babies. Four months later, while she was working in the French hospital, her left eye became dangerously infected (感染). She lost the eye. She was very disappointed. But she was soon back at work again, this time in London, England. There she met many famous scientists. In 1859, Elizabeth Blackwell was officially recognized as a doctor in Great Britain —the first woman to be honored. She was the inspiration of Elizabeth Garrett, who began the women’s medical movement in England. AOn my first day of high school,I asked an eleventh grader where my class was. And he told me it w as “on the fourth floor, next to the pool.〞 I found out five minutes later that we don't even have a fourth floor and there's no pool either! Besides that,I didn't have any trouble with the older kid.I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load (工作量) and size of the school. I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours,so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 550,but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade. The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I've prepared for the night before, gotten an A,and not remembered anything later. I've changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Don't take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful! While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools, they're also around in high school. I have a lot of friends who promised they'd never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun〞 and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when you're applying for (申请) college. AGeorge Gershwin, born in 1898, was one of America’s greatest composers. He published his first song when he was eighteen years old. During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs. Many of Gershwin’s s ongs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of his songs have remained popular as ever. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way — from jazz to country. In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music. Could jazz, some people asked, be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestraleader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. And in that short time, he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular. In 1928, Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition (作曲)with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him. She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics (评论家)were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life, to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It sill remains one of his most famous works.George Gershwin died in 1937, just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old. Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages. People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written.1. What did Gershwin do during his stay in Paris?A. He created one of his best worksB. He studied with Nadia BoulangerC. He argued with French criticsD. He changed his music style2.What do we learn from the last paragraph?A. Many of Gershwin’s works were lostB. The death of Gershwin was widely reportedC. A concert was held in memory of GershwinD. Brain cancer research started after Gershwin’s death.3. Which of the following best describes Gershwin?A. Talented and productiveB. Serious and boringC. Popular and unhappyD. Friendly and honestBOn a hill 600 feet above the surrounding land, we watch the lines of rain move across the scene, the moon rise over the hills, and the stars appear in the sky. The views invite a long look from a comfortable chair in front of the wooden house. Every window in our wooden house has a view, and the forest and lakes seldom look the same as the hour before. Each look reminds us where we are. There is space for our three boys to play outside, to shoot arrows, collect tree seeds, build earth houses and climb trees. Our kids have learned the names of the trees, and with the names have come familiarity and appreciation. As they tell all who show even a passing interest, maple〔枫树〕makes the best fighting sticks and white pines are the best climbing trees. The air is clean and fresh. The water from the well has a pleasant taste, and it is perhaps the healthiest water our kids will ever drink. Though they have one glass a day of juice and the rest is water, they never say anything against that. The seasons change just outside the door. We watch the maples turn every shade of yellow and red in the fall and note the poplars’〔杨树〕putting out the first green leaves of spring. The rainbow smelt fills the local steam as the ice gradually disappears, and the wood frogs start to sing in pools after being frozen for the winter. A family of birds rules our skies and flies over the lake.4. What can be learned from Paragraph 2?A. The scenes are colorful and changeable.B. There are many windows in the wooden house.C. The views remind us that we are in a wooden house.D. The lakes outside the windows are quite different in color.5. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家),encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.8. The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because___. .A. they lived healthily in a dirty environment.B. they thought bath houses were too dirty to stay inC. they believed disease could be spread in public bathsD. they considered bathing as the cause of skin disease9.Which of the following best describes Henry IV’s attitude to bathing?A. Afraid.B. Curious.C. Approving.D. Uninterested.10. How does the passage mainly develop?A. By providing examples.B. By making comparisons.C. By following the order of time.D. By following the order of importance.11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To stress the role of dirt.B. To introduce the history of dirt.C. To call attention to the danger of dirt.D. To present the change of views on dirt.DIn a recent announcement, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 〔MIT〕said that they have joined forces to offer free online courses in an effort to attract millions of online learners worldwide.Beginning this fall, a number of courses developed by teachers at both universities will be offered online through a new $60 million program, known as edX. “Anyone with an Internet connection anywhere in the world can use our online courses,〞 Harvard President Drew Faust said during a meeting to announce the plan. What gift is worth the most? This Christmas I was debating what to give my father. My dad is a hard person to buy for because he never wants anything. I pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mom saying that we were leaving for Christmas shopping for him when I came across a message on my phone that I had locked. The message was from my father. My eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming. and underneath a poem by William Blake. The flower, a lone dandelion standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me. My dad had been reciting those words to me since I was a kid. That may even be the reason why I love writing. I decided that those words would be my gift to my father.I called back. I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift. I sent the photo of the cream-colored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. As I was arranging the details another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe; my dad recited it as much as he did the other. I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. The poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching I found the perfect picture. The image was painted with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. As I watched both poems passing through the printer, the white paper coloring with words that shaped my childhood. I felt that this was a gift that my father would truly appreciate.Christmas soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad's face as he unwrapped those swirling black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame, I knew I had given the perfect gift.32.
