The resulting RO permeate water then enters the Elix ®Bacteria and their by-products interfere with chemistry assays and enzyme immunoassays, typically leading to unstable analyzer calibrations, high absorbance of blanks, reference drifts, and errors on mean patient values. In the Milli-Q ® CLX 7000 Series, UV lamp sanitization occurs at three stages:• During water production , a 254 nm bactericidal UV lamp inactivates bacteria.• In the tank , a UV lamp (ASM, Automatic Sanitization Module) regularly irradiates stored water and the tank walls, preventing bacterial growth and the formation of biofilm.* When CO dissolved in feed water is less than 30 ppm.5Optimize water consumption with an environmentally responsible system containing E.R.A.® technologyMilli-RX™ system(1992)Elix system (2003) with RO recovery loop Today’s Mili-Q CLX 7000Series system with E.R.A. technology10000m 900080007000600050004000300020001000WASTE (m )CLRW (m )Over the last 25 years, we have dramatically reduced water purification system water consumption, enabling laboratories to save up toseveral thousand dollars per year on tap water expenses . The graph shows water consumption and the split between CLRW produced and reject water for three of our water purification systems over a seven-year period (production of 1000 L/day of CLRW-quality water, 312 days per year). The Milli-Q ® CLX 7000 Series incorporates our E.R.A.® (Evolutive Reject Adjustment) technology — providing users with even greater savings. With its innovative and efficient reverse osmosis (RO) recovery loop, the Milli-Q ® CLX 7000 Series optimizes water consumption by recycling part of the waterrejected to the drain, thus reducing water waste and also extending RO cartridge and Progard ® pack lifetimes.Furthermore, depending on the feed water qualityanalysis, the Milli-Q ® CLX 7000 Series will calculate the best water recovery and will automatically optimize water consumption by means of motorized valves. No matter what the feed water temperature, inlet pressure, or conductivity may be, E.R.A.®technology’s automated valves ensure that the Milli-Q ® CLX 7000 Series flow rate and water recovery remain constant.* Users no longer need to manually adjust valves to maintain production flow rate and protect RO cartridge lifetime. These latest RO technologies illustrate our dedication to developing environmentally responsible waterpurification solutions to reduce tap water and system consumables use. The solutions reduce maintenance time, as well as the risk of human error — letting users save money on system operation, and also enjoy peace of mind with higher reliability, and optimized water purification system/analyzer uptime.* Please refer to Feed Water Requirements in the Specifications Table.6User-friendly system interface with all relevant information at a glanceWith its large, innovative touchscreen, the system is designed for intuitive operation, with all information available at a glance in a dashboard format.

(CLSI) guideline: “Preparation and Testing of Reagent Water in the Clinical Laboratory;Approved Guideline – Fourth Edition” (CLSI C3-A4)23Constant- and reliable-quality degassed clinical laboratory reagent water (CLRW)Degassing for clinical applicationsGases such as oxygen and nitrogen are naturally soluble in water. Like all gases dissolved in liquids, however, they become less soluble at higher temperatures. As the temperature of the water feeding an analyzer increases to the typical clinical assay temperature of 37°C, these gases form bubbles that can interfere with the analyzer’s optical measurements, and, in some instruments, can cause inaccurate dispense volumes.AFS ® D water purification systems contain integrated degassing technology designed to provide a solution for applications requiring removal of these soluble and insoluble gases prior to analysis. Degassing successfully prevents the formation of bubbles near optical sensors and in tubing. We use a hollow fiber degassing technique for maximum effectiveness, resulting in fast, effective reduction of soluble gas.®4AFS ® D Systems' Water Purification Pathway® D systems for ® D system® polishing A cost-effective solution for your degassed clinical water purification needs1.

UV Lamp 254 nm (UV System)19. Product Water20. Reservoir12Type 2 pure water is one of the most common reagents. It is used by scientists, researchers, and engineers everywhere in environments as diverse as academic, hospital, and quality control laboratories. In spite of its importance, many water purification systems on the market are not able to reliably provide pure water of consistent quality in the daily volumes required by users. In contrast to these other systems, EMD Millipore’s Elix® Essential systems have been developed to ensure delivery of constant- and reliable-quality Type 2 water. By incorporating proven, patented Elix® EDI technology with other advanced complementary water pu-rification techniques, Elix® Essential systems make the best use of existing purification technologies. In the Elix® Essential system water purification sequence, potable tap water is first treated with a Progard® pack, and then purified by reverse osmosis to produce RO Type 3 wa-ter. This water enters the Elix® electrodeionization module , where ion-exchange resins are continuously regenerated by a small electrical field. This process requires only very small amounts of water and energy, and results in consistently high-quality pure water - with no need for external chemical regeneration of the resin beads. In Elix® UV systems, a bactericidal 254 nm UV lamp is available to sanitize the pure water before it is stored in a polyethylene reservoir.EMD Millipore’s Elix® module: unique technology based on anion-permeable and cation-permeable membranes; high-quality ion-exchange resin; and activated carbon beads. Elix® Essential system water purification sequenceEMD Millipore’s current Elix® EDI module is the result of over twenty years of concentrated activity by our Lab Water Research & Development teams. Today, our extensive worldwide installed base of Elix® systems provides the assurance that Elix® EDI technology is robust, reliable andefficient: you can trust Elix® Essential systems to supply the solution to your pure water needs.High-quality pure water to match your specificationsElix® TechnologyConsistency and reliability in pure water quality is crucial in laboratory applications.Pure water, such as the water produced by Elix® Essential systems, is used throughoutthe lab for:④Feed to laboratory equipment (e.g., Milli-Q® Type 1 ultrapure water systems, weatherometers, autoclaves, glassware washers, and dissolution testing units)④Preparation of microbiological media, buffer and pH solutions④Histology④Chemical reactions run in water④Manual glassware rinsingRegulatory bodies have defined the minimum quality requirements for pure water through specific and rigorous standards. Elix® Essential systems are designed to meet or exceed requirements as described by ISO® 3696 (Grade 2 water); ASTM® D1193 (Type II resistivity and TOC Table I specifications); and by the United States, European and Japanese Pharmacopeias for Purified Water. With resistivity values that are greater than 5 MΩ·cm at 25 °C, and with less than 30 ppb TOC, the quality of Elix® Essential water exceeds that of double distilled water. In general, water that has been purified using Elix® technology is suitable for use with analyses at the parts per million (ppm) or high parts per billion (ppb) levels. The graph shows the superiority of Elix® technology over systems using ion-exchangeresin packs. Resistivity drops dramatically when packs are exhausted.3Budget-conscious users will also appreciate Elix® Essential systems for their low and predictable running costs:④Integrated Elix® electrodeionization technology requires no costly resin replacement or regeneration.④Only a single Progard® pretreatment pack is needed to remove particles, free chlorine and colloids from tap water.④Electricity consumption is 200 times less than that of conventional distillation equipment.④The system’s efficient RO-reject water recirculation loop significantly reduces tap water use and helps extend the lifetime of the Progard® pack.④No strong chemicals must be purchased for resin regeneration or cleaning purposes.④There are no transportation and storage costs (as with bulky and cumbersome resin cartridges or bottled water).Low and predictable running costs 4User-friendly systemsElix® Essential systems have been designed for easy, effortless operation.Intuitive controls on the system cabinet simplify use, and provide essentialdetails — you see just the information you need, such as product water qualityand reservoir water level. When necessary, icons inform users of any actionsthat should be performed (i.e., changing the Progard® pack, sanitizing the sys-tem, or taking corrective measures in case of an alert or alarm). To ensure optimal system operation, icons and the backlit LCD screen changecolor to visually signal maintenance alerts or alarms. For example, fifteen daysbefore the purification pack should be replaced, the Progard® icon will turnyellow. As the date for pack change approaches, the LCD screen will switch fromits normal blue background color to yellow. For more important warnings, thescreen will turn red to indicate an urgent action is required. When there hasbeen no user interaction with the screen for 15 minutes, and there is no alert oralarm, the system’s screen saver will be activated automatically.Additional information on system operation and maintenance is provided by theQuick Reference Guide and User Manual stored on the water production unit.5Easy and carefree maintenanceLow maintenance Elix® Essential systems free you to concentrate on your laboratorywork. Elix® technology eliminates the need for extra polishing packs or conditioningcartridges, so there is just one Progard® purification pack to change — and the system’snew ergonomic pack locking system makes this easier than ever to do.Just pull up on the locking handle to remove the exhausted pack, position the replace-ment pack in the cabinet, and push down on the handle to lock the new pack in place— it’s as simple as that! This is followed by an automatic 15-minute flush cycle, andyour system is once again ready for use.Automatic self-maintenance functions (i.e., flush mode, rinsing mode, sanitization cy-cle) keep the system’s reverse osmosis membrane in top operating condition, and ensureoptimal water quality. System sanitization is recommended approximately four times ayear, and takes just a few minutes to perform.Full control over pure water qualityIn comparison to centralized water delivery installations with a “loop” configuration,stand-alone, reliable Elix® Essential systems give users direct “hands-on” control overwater quality. After each purification step, important parameters are checked by thesystem, including:④Feed water pressure and conductivity④RO pressure, RO water quality, RO membrane efficiency (% ion rejection), Elix®Essential water quality and temperatureElix® Essential system monitoring equipment is best in class. Reliable resistivitymeasurement provides control with features such as low cell constant, flow-throughresistivity cell design, and temperature compensation at 25 °C.Key values can be displayed on the easy-to-read Elix® Essential system LCD display, letting users check water quality status whenever needed. Any system anomaly is im-mediately signaled by a change in the color of the highly visible LCD backlight (yellowfor alert mode; red for alarm mode). On another level, RFID technology prevents insertion of an incorrect purification car-tridge in the Elix® Essential system, and also ensures traceability by registering thecatalogue and serial numbers of a new Progard® pack in system memory. For enhanced data management control, remote access capabilities, and long-term electronic archiving, users can also opt to use their Elix® Essential systems withMillitrack® software.6The best use oflaboratory space With their small footprint, Elix® Essential systems aredesigned to make the best use of laboratory space. Sys-tems can be placed on or under the bench or wall-in-stalled, depending on your needs. Systems provide 3,5,10, or 15 liters of pure water per hour.Select from a range of high-quality polyethylene reservoirs(30-100 liters) to match your water usage. Reservoirsmaintain consistent purity of stored water and provideeffective protection against airborne contaminants. Anoptional Automatic Sanitation Module (ASM) can fur-ther protect the integrity of stored water with regular exposure to a bactericidal 254 nm UV lamp.Confidence in your water purification system supplierAs one of the top three R &D investors in the Life Science Tools industry and with more than 50 years of experience in water purification systems manufacturing, EMD Millipore is a partner you can count on.Elix® Essential systems are manufactured in an ISO® 9001 v. 2008 and ISO 14001-v. 2004-registered manufacturing site,* and are certified for safety and electromagnetic compatibility (CE, cUL; FCC).Additionally, to optimize the performance and lifetime of your water purification system, EMD Millipore offers a complete portfolio of Watercare Pact Service Plans ranging from a single annual checkup to a full system cover.* Certificates are available upon request. For more information, please visit our website:/labwaterMillipore, Elix, Progard, Milli-Q and Millitrack are registered trademarks of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, and EMD Millipore and the M mark are trademarks of Merck KGaA.
