Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition(认知) after controlling for differences in parents’ income, education and the amount of parent talk, Levine said. The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.“The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not, on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转) and translate shapes,” Levine said in a statement. The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of the children in the study played with puzzles at one time. Higher income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skill. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than the parents of girls. The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.24. The top half of this fish looks like a small horse. But looking at th e sea horse’s tail, you might think “sea monkey” is a better name. Then there’s the sea hors e’s pouch(袋). “Sea kangaroo” might also be a good name for this fish.Sea horses live in warm ocean waters all over the world. They keep safe from other fish by hiding in plants and grasses that grow under the sea. They can also change colors to match their surroundings(环境). A sea horse remains in one place for hours at a time by winding(缠绕) its tail around a plant. It feeds on live food, such as small shrimp. For a fish that doesn’t move around much, the sea horse eats a lot—in just one day, a sea horse can eat 3,000 shrimp!A sea horse keeps the same mate for its whole life, and it’s the male(雄的) sea horse that gives birth to baby sea horses. How does this happen? Baby sea horses start out as eggs, which come from the female’s body. The male carries the eggs in its pouch for about three weeks until they hatch(孵化). Soon after the babies are born, the female gives her mate a new set of eggs. The male sea horse spends most of its life carrying eggs.Sadly, the number of sea horses is becoming smaller. Why is this happening? Some places where sea horses once lived have been filled in to make new land. Also, many sea horses are caught and sold as aquarium(水族馆,养鱼缸) fish. This really is not a good idea because most sea horses don’t live long in aquariums. The best place for a sea horse is the ocean.4. The sea horse got its name because of its .A. headB. tailC. skinD. pouch5. We can learn from the text that sea horses .A. like to move aroundB. live in cold ocean watersC. feed on small sea animalsD. change colors with the temperature6. What does a female sea horse do with her eggs?A. She puts them in the male’s pouchB. She hides them in sea grasses.C. She carries them around.D. She hatches them.7. Why is the number of sea horses becoming smaller?A. They grow at a very low speed.B. Their homes are being destroyed.C. They are killed by people for food.D. Their food is becoming less and less.Passage 3Amazon has changed the way we shop — you can get anything on the site, right? Actually, the retail(零售) giant has to draw the line on some products. Here are the items you’ll have to find elsewhere.PetsThankfully, you cannot expect to purchase the family pet on Amazon. Pets, livestock, and marine mammals are strictly prohibited from being sold on the site and with good reason — primarily being that none of these should be kept in a warehouse awaiting an order. If you’re prepared to adopt an animal, one option is to search Petco’s listing of adoptable pets in your area. And, of course, rescuing an animal from a local shelter will do a world of good for both your family and its newest member.Lottery(彩票) ticketsMost of us wouldn’t turn down an opportunity to strike it rich, but you’re still going to have to wait in line if you want to score a lottery ticket. On Amazon’s list of prohibited items are lottery tickets. Rules and regulations about selling lotto tickets vary by state and merchants must apply to become a retailer of lottery tickets. For example, the California Lottery asks that potential sellers have more than 200 customers daily, be able to accommodate official lottery equipment, and be in a retail setting like a grocery or gas station, among others.TobaccoYou can find a variety of things for a smoking habit, like ashtrays, pipes, and cigarette paper, on Amazon, but don’t expect to find any actual tobacco products. E-cigarettes, regardless of whether or not they contain nicotine, are also a no-no on the site. It would simply be boring for the company to check the age of buyers ordering tobacco products online.8. Why is there a ban on selling pets on Amazon?A. Because selling pets on the Internet is illegal in the world.B. Because animals can’t be put in the storehouse to sell.C. Because it’s not safe to buy animals on the Internet.D. Because animals can only be bought from local shelters.9. What can you do if you want to buy a lottery ticket?A. Accommodate official lottery equipment yourself.B. Apply to become a retailer of lottery tickets yourself.C. Queue at a lottery ticket store to get one on the spot.D. Live a life yourself near a grocery store or gas station.10. What can you buy on Amazon according to the text?A. E-cigarettes.B. Marine mammals.C. Lottery equipment.D. Cigarette paper.Passage 4“This isn’t Disneyland, I’m not a novelty(新奇), this is as real as it gets.” sing The Sisters of Invention. The young women—Annika, Michelle, Jackie, Aimee and Carolme—are a pop group with a difference. All have learning difficulties and some have extra disabilities. The five are based in Adelaide, Australia, and met in 2010 when they sang together in a choir(合唱队) run by Tutti, an organization which supports disabled artists. Tutti saw they had talent and invited them to form a group. Now they perform together two or three times per month, and this is how they make a living.Michelle is 25 and has cerebral palsy(脑瘫) and a mild learning disability. She says, “We choose the name The Sisters of Invention because we are like sisters and we support each other on and off stage. For the invention part, we are trying to change people’s view of people with disabilities. We are reinventing the rules.”All their songs are based on the members’ own experiences and were written as a group in their twice weekly meetings at Tutti. “We would arrive in the morning and I’d say, ‘What do you want to talk about today?’” says their manager and producer Michael Ross. He then noted down everything they said until lyrics took shape. Ross says that putting “their truth” out there is important. He says, “What I’m interested in is that we get to see the world in a way that people in pop culture almost never get to see. It is creative gold.”When they perform their songs, the physical side of their disabilities is more obvious, but Ross says, “They’re not up there to show their barriers or difficulties. They’re up there to show their strengths.”11. What do we know about The Sisters of Invention?A. All its members are disabled.B. It was founded all by five girls.C. It has existed for less than ten years.D. They perform not in order to make money.12. The girls choose the name The Sisters of Invention because .A. they all have great talentB. they help each other like sistersC. they have the same experiencesD. they are good at inventing things13. How does Michael Ross produce lyrics for The Sisters of Invention?A. By talking with the girls.B. By asking the girls questions.C. By learning about pop culture.D. 第一部分阅读理解(共20小题;每题2分,满分40分)第一节:阅读以下短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出最正确选项。

AThousands of people began pouring into Pennsylvania from other states. They wanted to buy lottery tickets(彩票).The tickets cost only $0.9 each. But that small spending could bring them a reward of $90 million. That was the second largest lottery jackpot(积累奖金) in history.More than 87 million tickets were bought for the Pennsylvania lottery drawing. Those who bought tickets had to choose seven numbers from 1 to 80.The chance of winning was one in 9.6 million, but that little chance certainly didn’t affect ticket sales. In the last few days before the drawing, tickets were selling at the unbelievable rate of 500 per second. Experts say many people buy lottery tickets because they just want to have a piece of the action.Others say the lottery is a stock market for poor people. It allows them to dream about wealth they’ll probably never have. But many people believe lotteries are no better than legalized(合法化的) gambling. Some critics note that most people who play are poor and may not be able to afford the tickets. There are also many addicts who take the game seriously. They may pour their life savings into lottery tickets. Some clubs have been formed to help them kick the habit.Politicians like lotteries because they provide money that would otherwise have to come from new taxes. The profits from lotteries are usually used to pay for education or programs for senior citizens. But critics say this arrangement just allows states to legalize vice(恶习), under the name of social progress. No matter whether you regard state lotteries right or not, you cannot refuse to accept their extreme popularity with many Americans. 1.The main idea of the passage is that ______.A.lotteries are of great benefit to everyone who buys themB.playing a lottery is just like investing in the stock marketC.many people buy lottery tickets, but lotteries cause disagreementD.lotteries are nothing but legalized vice2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.Politicians like lotteries because they don’t have to pay extra taxes.B.The popularity of lotteries in America actually is social progress.C.Some critics don’t like lotteries because many poor people waste money on them. D.People love the lottery because it is a stock market. 3.In just one hour in the last few days, the Pennsylvania lottery sold tickets totaling ______.A.$1.62 million B.$1.82 millionC.$9.6 million D.$87 million4.People who are addicted to playing lotteries should ______.A.join a support group B.kick the habitC.win the lottery D.save every centBWhen a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins, do you hurry on, not knowing what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money? What should our attitude to beggars be? There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories. It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from.It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars.Certainly, most of the world’s great religions (宗教) order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally (道德方面) right in the old days, when one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea.Quite a few people will not give to beggars.Let us look at their arguments.First, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living from begging.Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil (恶行).Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs.Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one’s sense of pride and self-dependence. Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help.It is hard to come to any final conclusion; there are various cases and we must deal with them differently.A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take sway the moral goodness of the giver.5.What is mainly discussed in the passage?A.Moral deeds of people.B.Religious activities of the church.C.Moral goodness of the giver.D.Arguments on giving to beggars.6.What can we infer from the sentence “But has the world changed ?”in the second paragraph?A.People no longer know who suffers misfortune in the village.B.Some people will not do what was morally right in the past .C.We don’t meet with those who need help any more.D.Now it is the government’s duty to help the beggars.7.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?A.Some people dress up to pretend to be beggars.B.Some beggars want money to help their children go to school.C.Some beggars use the money to buy drugs.D.Some beggars have no excuse for begging.8.In the last paragraph, the writer thinks that it is hard to come to any final conclusion, because .A.the cases can be so different B.there are so many beggarsC.there is so much money wasted D.there are so many different argumentsCTim Welford, aged 33, and Dom Mee, aged 30, both from England, were keen on (=like...very much) rowing boats. They made a plan to row across the Pacific Ocean from Japan to San Francisco. The name of their rowboat was “Crackers”.It was about seven meters long. They set out from Japan on May 17,2001.They had rowed nearly 5,500 miles when their boat was hit by a fishing ship on September 17,2001.Luckily they both escaped unharmed, but their boat was badly damaged and they had to abandon( = stop)their journey. In a radio interview, Dom expressed his disappointment and explained how the accident took place.“A fishing ship came towards us with nobody on the bridge and ran us down.It all happened so quickly.I managed to dive into the water.Tim felt it would be safer to stay on board. He was trapped inside as the boat was driven under the water. Finally some people appeared on the ship and saw me in the water.I shouted at them to stop the ship and to get Tim out. When the ship stopped, I eventually saw Tim, and I was very, very disappointed that we were still alive. We were very disappointed that we couldn’t reach San Francisco. But we are alive. That above everything is the most important.”9.How long had Tim and Dom been at sea when their boat was hit by a fishing boat?A.For one month B.For two months.C.For three months.D.For four months.10.Dom said that the most important thing in this accident was that________.A.their rowboat was not damagedB.both of them existed after a dangerous timeC.they enjoyed this journeyD.they failed to reach San Francisco11.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A.Some people on the fishing ship saved them.B.Tim and Dom were going to San Francisco in the rowboat because they had no money to buy airplane tickets.C.Dom dived into the water when the accident happened because he thought it would be dangerous to stay on board.D.Dom told people about their dangerous experience when he was interviewed on the radio.DOnce upon a time two brothers who lived on neighboring farms fell into conflict(对抗).It was the first serious one in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed. Then the long cooperation fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence. One morning there was a knock on John’door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox.“I’m looking for a few days’work,”he said.“Could I help you?”“Yes,”said the older brother.“I do have a job for you.Look across the creek(河沟) at that farm. That’s my neighbor, in fact, it’s my younger brother.Last week there was a meadow(草地) between us and he took his bulldozer(推土机) to the levee(堤) and now there is a creek between us.Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I’ll go him one better.I want you to build me a fence—an 8-foot fence —so I won’t need to see his place anymore.Cool him down, anyhow.”The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation.I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”The older brother had to go to town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day.The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, nailing.About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job.Thefarmer’s eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped. There was no fence there at all.It was a bridge— a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work—and his younger brother was coming across, his hand outstretched.“You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I’ve said and done.”The brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hand. They turned to see the carpenter lift his toolbox on his shoulder.“No, wait! Stay a few days.I’ve a lot of other projects for you,”said the older brother.“I’d love to stay on,”the carpenter said, “but, I have so many more bridges to build.”12.What was life like for the two brothers before the conflict?A.They lived a poor, miserable life.B.They were friendly neighbors, helping each other.C.They never spoke to each other.D.They lived together as one family.13.Which of the following best describes the carpenter?A.He was skilled but dishonest.B.He was hardworking but unskilled.C.He was clever, hardworking, but cold hearted.D.He was clever, helpful and skilled.14.The best title for this passage is ________.A.A Fine Piece of WorkB.A Clever CarpenterC.A Conflict between Two BrothersD.Two Brothers15.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A.The younger brother used his bulldozer to dig a creek.B.After the conflict John was angry with his younger brother.C.At first the carpenter planned to build an 8-foot fence as John asked him to.D.The two brother made peace at last.第二节根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The dark green walls andthe dirty white ceiling make the room seem dark, and thus even smaller than it is. As you walkinto the room, you are stopped short by my bed which fills half of the room. The two largewindows over the bed are hidden by heavy dark gold drapes. Against the wall on your left, pushed into a corner behind the head of the bed, is a large bookcase which is crammed withpapers , books, and knick-knacks, Wedged in between the bookcase and the wall opposite thebed is a small grey metal desk. It has a brown wooden chair which seems to fill the left end ofthe room. Stuffed under the desk is a wooden wastepaper bas ket over —flowing with paperand debris. The wall above the bookcase and desk is completely taken up with two smallposters. On the right hand of the room is a nar row closet with clothes, shoes, hats, tennisracquets, and boxes bulging out of its sliding doors. Compare theAdvantages of These Two Kinds of Friends. Which Kind of Friends Do You Prefer? Explain Why.许多人喜欢异性朋友,然而许多人喜欢同性朋友,你喜欢哪种?Some People Like Different Friends. Others Like Similar Friends. Compare the Advantages ofThese Two Kinds of Friends. Which Kind of Friends Do You Prefer? Explain Why.It is universally known that friendship is one of the eternalthemes in the literature of alllanguages. This is because human beings were born to need the warmth and laughter offriends. However it is impossible for us to make friends with everybody. We have to choosetrue friends. Some of us like similar friends, while others different friends. Personally, I preferboth. It goes without saying that having similar friends has many advantages. We can feel a sense ofstrength when we have a group of old friends who would share our sufferings and happiness. Mor eover, old friends always know how to maintain mutual trust and how to avoid potentialfriction. I always feel delighted when I meet an old friend after a long departure. Immediately, hearty laughter fills the atmosphere.Never theless I believe that a mixture of friends is equally advantageous. In the first place, frequent contact with dif ferent friends broadens my wor ld outlook. For instance, I have foundit a real treasure to have so many friends on the campus who often help me reinforce mybeliefs. Secondly, I have found that different friends cannot only lead to new adventures butalso show me new avenues in life. Thirdly, they can help me with whatever difficulties Iencounter in life.To conclude, I prefer to have both types of friends and as many as possible. Of course, I willnot forget to choose friends wisely .英语六级作文篇31. 目前社会上有许多人喜欢购买彩票2. 分析产生这种现象的原因3. 提出你的建议【范文】Why Do People Like to Buy Lotteries?Nowadays, there exist all kinds of lotteries in our society, such as welfare lottery, sports lottery, computer lottery, and soforth. Anyone, whether men or women, the young or the old, may buy lottery tickets. But why do so many people like buying them? The following reasons can account for the popularity of lotteries. First of all, most people are trying their luck on lottery tickets. They have a long-cherished dream of making big money overnight. In addition, there are some people who want to make donation to public welfare by buying lottery tickets. Besides, some people buy them just for fun.As far as I am concerned, there are some risks in buying lotteries. People never should count on making big money by buying lotteries. Furthermore, lotteries to some extent are similar to gambling, so people should not spend too much money and energy on them. In a word, people should keep a clear head when buying lotteries.英语六级作文篇4Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled “My View on University Ranking” You should write at least 150 words .以”高校排名之我见“为题,写一篇不少于150字的短文,30分钟。

彩票和赢钱Every week millions of people buy lottery tickets, hoping their small investment will make them rich. They often believe that if they won a million dollars, their troubles would be over. If they actually got the money, would their dreams come true?Whether people live "happily ever after" when they win the lottery probably depends on what their dreams are. Money can buy some things but not others.Cash buys houses, cars, and college educations; it pays for medical treatment and clears up overdue bills. Money also purchases travel and new experiences. A million dollars could allow someone to quit a tough, boring job and try for something better. It could provide a feeling of security. On the other hand, winning so much money could actually cause some problems. A person who quit working might eventually become bored or lose some self-respect. Family members might squabble over what should be purchased. Long-lost friends, relatives, and even complete strangers are likely to want a handout. The winner must then decide whom to help and whom to offend.Despite all these drawbacks, I would rather win the money than not. The difficulties of having to manage a million dollars are troubles I would like to have.2. Sample essay:有孩子好吗?"After the baby is born, things will never be the same." People say that to expectant parents-and they are right! It will be a long time before those parents can again sleep late in the morning. A baby wakes early, screaming for food. The toddler thinks 6 a.m. is the right time to start the day. After that come early school mornings. It will be years before the parents can go anywhere together on the spur of the moment. Every outing must be planned ahead so that a baby-sitter can be found. The budget will be stretched, the work load will get heavier, and by the time parents can be alone, they may be too tired to talk.Still, people want children. Why?One reason is that children are a link to the future. They will probably be here after the parents are gone. In addition, their children will live after them.A deeper reason for wanting children, perhaps, is that the more people we have to love, the more fulfilled our lives can be. By giving to a child, people enrich their own lives. In the end, we live not only for ourselves, but for others.税收的作用It hurts to look at a paycheck and see how much of it was taken out for income tax. That money could have paid some important bills. It is easy to dream of doing away with the income tax and keeping all that money for ourselves. If there were no income tax, however, the government would have a lot less to spend. The money we send to Washington seems to fall into a black hole and disappear. Actually, though, many people depend on it. The money pays the salaries of government employees, who provide services from drug control to highway building. It supports our military defense. Also, much of the money is returned to people in the form of student loans, veterans' benefits, and payments to farmers, for example. The government has been working to cut its budget lately. With every cut, someone complains loudly. So if the income tax were eliminated, other taxes would have to make up for it. Paying those other taxes would also hurt. Sales taxes fall most heavily on poor people. Taxes on manufacturers only result in higher prices to consumers.Income taxes are not fun to pay. But doing without them would be worse. In my opinion, income taxes should be made as fair as possible. Then we each must "bite the bullet" and do our share.4. Sample essay:电视Television has changed both the way we spend our time and what we know about the world. Some of the changes brought by television have improved our way of life, but others have made it worse.People today on the average spend several hours a day watching television. In times past, they would sit on their front steps and visit on nice evenings. This neighborly visiting built close friendships, but it seldom takes place any longer. Even though families may all watch TV together, they may not communicate much. Some women have called themselves "sports widows" because their husbands spend every spare minute watching televised football, baseball, and other sports. On the other hand, people have learned more about the world because of television. People in small towns know more about the city, and people in cities have learned about the country. Politicians, celebrities, wars, and disasters appear in the living room. Programs take viewers to the bottom of the sea, the tops of mountains, and even outer space. Some people think television leads to violence, immorality, and greed for possessions. I am not sure whether this is true. However, good or bad, TV is here to stay. It is up to each of us to make the most of its opportunities and avoid its problems.5. Sample essay:关于致富When lack of money prevents us from having something we want very much, it is tempting to dream of being rich. It is hard to keep in mind that Americans are already wealthy compared with people in many other parts of the world. Our modern conveniences would have been the envy of kings in times past. Just the same, most people would like a larger. Whether most people are capable of making a lot of money is another question.People in average circumstances can often get ahead through education, hard work, and careful money management. But getting ahead is not the same as actually becoming rich.Only a small percentage of Americans could be called truly wealthy. Some people joined this group from ordinary beginnings. Usually they have done it by carefully riding some major development in the economy on its way up. In the past, great fortunes have been made in oil, steel, and railroads. Recently, some people have made millions in computers and real estate.Usually, though, it takes money to make money. Big investors often start rich and then get richer. Most of us cannot strike oil or start the next new technical breakthrough. Most people are not born into wealthy families, either. In America it certainly is possible to become more prosperous. But unless someone wins the lottery, real wealth is not very likely to come along.6. Sample essay:独居You come home alone after a long day at work. You open the door to your home. No one is there. Is it blessed silence you hear - or echoing emptiness? The millions of people who live alone today may have either experience. Some love living alone, yet others wish they didn't have to.When they open that door at night, people who live alone do not have to put up with demands or listen to someone's noise or meet anyone's dinner deadlines. They do not have to debate about which TV program to watch or stay off the phone because someone else is expecting an important call. No one else messes up their kitchen. But when they are sick, no one else will bring them an aspirin or call the doctor. Preparing dinner for one can be difficult, and eating dinner for one night after night can be very lonely. Perhaps no one really cares what they did all day. If they are feeling sad, there may be no one to cheer them up. Some people who live alone say the worst times come when something very good happens because there is no one to share the joy.During the course of a lifetime, one may sometimes live with others and sometimes live alone. Each way of life has its advantages. Learning to take advantage of them is one key to contentment.7. Sample essay:赢很重要吗?Sports includes both national teams and the teams for the rest of us. The national teams are mainly concerned with winning and with money. The other teams are mainly concerned with winning and with money. The other teams provide different satisfactions.Being on a team helps people learn teamwork - to rely on others and to do their own part as well. Players learn both to win and to lose. When the team loses, the members learn that they can come back from a loss. They look for the reasons they were beaten, work on their weaknesses, and try again. When the team wins, the members can learn to be gracious winners and good sports.Sports are also for play. Most of us have work to do most of the time. Now and then we need to have fun. Sports can provide the time to relax. If a team helps people learn to work together, lose win, and have fun, it's a winner regardless of the score. But if players on a winning team have not worked together, if they feel that winning makes them better than others, if there was no joy in the sport, those winners are losers.Having the winning score is important. Being a winner as a person is worth even more.8. Sample essay:贬低对手有用吗?Advertisers who directly attack their competitors may amuse me if they do it cleverly. However, they have probably lost me as a customer.Companies who attack their rivals remind me of people who boost their egos by criticizing others. When people do this, I often suspect they have little to offer and may even have something to hide.I would rather find out what is good about a person, not what is bad about someone else.Similarly, I like advertising that lets me know about products that might meet my needs. I don't place much faith in ads telling me what may be wrong with a rival product. I tend to suspect that the information could be biased.I also believe advertisers are foolish to name their rivals because by doing so they give the competing product free publicity. If the competition is worth attacking, I tend to think it may actually have something to offer. In advertising, as in life, I believe we should try to be the best we can be, without belittling the next person - or the rival product.9. Sample essay:几代同堂的问题Three generations living together can have both financial and personal advantages. On the other hand, it can also have personal disadvantages. In years past and today, three generations have probably lived together mostly out of economic necessity or advantage. Sometimes a young family moves in with the older generation because the husband and wife can't afford a place of their own. Sometimes grandparents move in because they aren't well enough or can't afford to live alone anymore. Occasionally, grandparents come to take care of the children so both parents can work. In times past, and sometimes today, three generations have lived together because they all depended on the same farm or business.Usually these arrangements do help solve financial and practical problems. Everyone has a roof over his or her head. Children and old people in need of care are likely to get it. Often a family can get ahead financially by sharing the work and the bills. In addition, a strong sense of family and of belonging can develop in everyone. What may be harder to work out are questions of who's in charge. If grandparents don't let go of some authority, the middle generation is likely to resent it. On the other hand, ailing grandparents may force their children to be parents to them and to their own children as well. If parents and grandparents disagree on discipline, children may be confused or angry. The personal disadvantages can be overcome. For three generations to live together successfully, everyone's needs must be respected.10. Sample essay:Television news shows are dramatic and interesting. Watching them is pleasant and does not require the effort of reading. If television did not cover the news, some people would know nothing about what is going on in the world. However, television newscasters cover only the events that they have time for, and they prefer stories that include some dramatic pictures. Viewers are quickly bored with reporters who sit and talk into the camera. As a result, a complicated story is often cut short.Newspapers and magazines do a better job of explaining complex events. They can include details, and a person with a special interest can take the time to read them. Others can stick to the headlines.Reading allows more freedom of choice than television. The TV audience cannot decide which stories to watch. In broadcasting, "one size fits all". However, a person who reads newspapers and magazines can choose to spend time on business, sports, health, or the school board election, depending on special interests.Television provides a useful glance at what's happening. However, a person who has individual interests and who wants the whole story needs newspapers and magazines as well.11. Sample essay:Some people live in one community all their lives, while others move around almost as much as nomads. Both experiences have their advantages and disadvantages.People who stay in one spot can develop lifelong friendships, and such friends may lend a hand if trouble comes. They know each other's life history, and they judge each other for the kind of person each is, not for the image each projects.Yet spending a lifetime in one location can also lock a person into a limited way of life. Personal change may become very difficult. People with few experiences may develop a narrow outlook and find it hard to understand those who have different ethnic, racial, or religious backgrounds. On the other hand, moving to different parts of the country is usually stressful. A person may feel lost and uprooted in a place where streets, stores, schools, and churches all are different. At first there are no friends to help. However, those who do move learn that people in other places have a variety of outlooks. There is a chance to appreciate different ways of life and even to choose the way one likes best. For a person who moves to a different place year after year, the disadvantages of moving probably outweigh the advantages. But a few moves are probably worth the effort. By staying in each place for a length of time, people can broaden their outlook but have enough time to make adjustment and form friendships.12. Sample essay:The automobile has probably changed people's way of life more than any other invention of the last century. More than electric lights, television, air travel, or even computers, automobiles have changed where people live and work, how they make a living, and even how they find a mate. Before there were cars, people generally traveled on foot or by horse and buggy over unpaved roads. Whether they lived in the city or the country, they rarely went farther than a few miles from home. They saw the same people and places year after year. The car opened up whole new worlds. Roads were paved, and motorists went to see different parts of the country. Some decided to stay. People with cars could live farther from their jobs, and so the age of commuting began. New suburbs sprang up around the cities. The auto industry boomed, and millions of Americans made a living manufacturing, selling, servicing, or insuring cars.As more people got cars, your people began driving them. No longer was courtship confined to the girl's front porch, under the watchful eye of her parents. The automobile began the sexual revolution. Some people believe that commuting, suburban life, and courting in cars are mixed blessings.Whether the changes are good or bad, they seem to be here to stay.13. Sample essay:Many people complain that modern society is too materialistic. Other people, they say, place too great an importance on material property. Rather than value values, these critics insist, people today value things. There is no doubt that we live in a material, consumer-oriented society. In economic terms, consumers use products; in everyday language, they acquire things: TVs, cars, clothes, furniture. This kind of materialism can actually be good for a society since it helps create jobs. When people have jobs, they acquire self-respect along with the money they need to provide the material things they and their families require. It is true, on the other hand, that many people have taken healthy consumerism too far. Materialism is evident when an otherwise intelligent person goes into debt charging things that he or she cannot pay for. Materialism is evident when people insist on buying a particular designer label even though the same quality can be found in a cheaper product. Materialism is evident when people are judged and admired for what they own rather than what they are or can do.Even if society has gone too far in the direction of materialism, as some say, the individual person doesn't need to surrender. He or she can still value honesty, integrity, freedom, talent, quality, and all the other values there are to value and leave the materialism to others.14. Sample essay:People spend a great deal of time, money, and energy to see or read about movie stars, TV actors, singers, and athletes. Such celebrities often become idols. Posters, T-shirts, fan clubs, and attendance at live performances prove that. What do celebrities do to merit this attention?Celebrities create excitement. They create excitement because they have done something or can do something that supposedly not everyone else can do. Raising a child, waking early to go to work each morning, building a home and a place in the community-these achievements actually deserve more admiration than rolling through Beverly Hills in a limousine or jetting across the Atlantic to star in a new movie. Yet because these achievements are part of many people's everyday lives, they are not considered special. Celebrities help us dream by lifting us out of our everyday lives and imagining ourselves doing other than everyday activities.Celebrities also set styles. They become models for behavior, clothing, and hairdos. Just consider Elvis Presley or the Beatles, for example. Celebrities also influence politics, as Bob Hope and Robert Redford have done.Celebrities' roles as "special people" and trendsetters, then, are the reason for the attention many of us lavish on them. In many ways, the celebrities of today have merely replaced the kings andqueens of old.15. Sample essay:Most people want to be successful in life, but success can come about in four ways: fame, money, knowledge, and pleasure. Success is also usually characterized by the word more; to be successful, people feel they have to be more famous, have more money, absorb more information, or enjoy life more.Success does not need to be characterized by quantity, however. Instead, you can measure the success of your life by its quality. It is not important, for example, how many people know you but who knows you and for what. Working in your community or on good relationships with family and friends can bring quality fame. Earning less money but spending it wisely and learning the joy saving is another way to succeed. Learning more so that you can turn around and teach someone else produces quality knowledge. And finally, all the above will most likely bring you quality success in enjoying the pleasures of living.Success, in conclusion, can be seen in different ways by different people. Only one thing is sure. No matter what other people see, the only one who knows whether you're succeeded is you.16. Sample essay:Every year billions of dollars are spent on advertising. Many approaches are used to persuade consumers to buy a product. Some seem to work better than others. One approach, for example, is to try to make the reader or viewer identify with the people shown using the product. These people seem to be glamorous, loved, successful, elite, clever, or sexy. Supposedly, anyone who uses the product can expect the same reward. Another approach is to let the product speak for itself; people are attracted to scrumptious food, beautiful clothing, and sleek new cars. Sometimes good prices and special deals are the focus. Ads for complicated products, such as computers, may provide a lot of information. Endorsements by celebrities are especially common. In general, many of the ads succeed. People do tend to buy what they see advertised. However, some advertising can backfire. People may be offended, for example, by ads that are overly sexy or ones that viciously or sarcastically attack competitors' products.Advertising can be a useful aid for the consumer. It helps a person learn what is new or in style or handy to have around, what things cost, and where to buy them. To use this information effectively, however, a person must learn to look past the emotional appeals and find the facts.17. Sample essay:Some animals are pets, some are wild, and many of them provide us with food. All have adifferent - and important - role in our lives. It is easy to forget that the steak at the supermarket once formed part of a steer. But without domestic animals such as chickens and cattle, we would all be vegetarians, or a great deal of our time would need to be spent hunting.Wild animals attract sport hunters. For some people they are even an important source of food. When urban people visit the wild, deer, bears, and other wild animals remind them of an older way of life.Pets, however, are the animals that are especially significant for most of us. They are undemanding companions; they love us when we are not at our best. A pet can be a great comfort when life seems hard. For children, pets can be both fun and instructive. If a child cares for a pet, he or she learns to take responsibility for another being. Watching kittens or puppies being born can be a natural form of sex education. For children, as for adults, pets are loving companions and a help in tough time.As I recall, an Indian chief once said, "Without our brothers, the animals, we would all be very lonely." I believe he was right.。

Today Id like to share my personal experience of happiness andbitterness of being an English teacher. I remember, five years ago, when I stood at the teachers desk for the first time, maybe because I was too young, maybe because I was too inexperienced, the students in my class paid no attention to me, didnt behave themselves at all. I felt ashamed and helpless. In order to save my face, I just criticized the students seriously whenever they talked in class or even moved a little. I thought sooner or later, they would listen to me.Yes, I could control the class now, but the students and the atmosphere became strange. No, they were not listening to me. It was too quiet. The breathless silence urged me to consider the way I was teaching. Then 1 August 20xx, I got the chance to study the New Course of English. Until then could I realized that it was my frozen eyes that make the students flinch, it was my stiff face that trod out the enthusiasm in the childrens hearts. How to stimulate my class and show my warmth, so that they can enjoy their study in English? I had a deep thought. Its smile. There is a kindness called smile. It is the most beautiful language in the world. It can make distance no distance. Just awake the students with a smiling face!I said to myself. The next day, when I stood on the stage with a smiling face, when I asked the questions with a smile, when I encouraged the children in a friendly way, the students were just shocked! But I could find there was more happiness and excitement in their eyes! Gradually, they got used to it, and participated in my teaching. As I predicted, that class became a lovely one. I was moved, and saidThank you for listening, boys and girls! In the following days, I keep on working even harder. I prepare my lessons carefully. I use Flash, pictures, riddles, and interesting stories to make great efforts to help the students to learn more. But Iwill never forget one thing: smile, give them a smile, to give them strength, to let them feel happy, to make them confident. The children do enjoy the English lesson now, when they tell me the answers in great excitement, I can feel their gladness, and my smile is more sincerely than ever! There is kindness called smile. From the childrens yearning eyes, I understand, it is smile that makes my students and I get closer, it is smile that fills the kindness to my English class, it is smile that shapes me popular English teacher finally. Thats all. Thank you very much! Smile, and sometimes can be a life to retain power. To retain the life of laughter, tells the story of a place in the true story of the war years, in the story, a huge smile to show her magic.War, a number of German soldiers found guilty of a terrible mistake had been closed to general, including one soldier in particular would like to go out alive, but this possibility is too remote. He was informed of his life in the death of the ultimatum had been issued - and three months would be shot, so he does not pin any hope on the survival of the. Two weeks later, he calmed down.He visited every day to face the smiling general, the generals began to ignore him, then, he has a little goodwill, and began to talk to him ... ... three months after the date on the blink of an eye later, shot By the time this is a very strange shot: General cite shot on the left hand, right hand to give back to the team that can be a continuation of the war.His turn, he closed his eyes, waiting for death to e, this time, his generals to see, he slowly raised his right hand ... ...This is the life-saving force, which is hard to imagine the magic! Every day to a general apology to smile, even from its own bottom line back to the original point of death, this not the great power of a smile? If we are able to smile in the face of every person and every thing, the success or failure of honor in the face with a smile, a smile in the face of all with a smile of genuine spiritual insights better life, it would be very happy and well-being.Jan-mouth, will be able to draw a beautiful arc, which is how simple things! However, we do every day to add a smile to my soul? Did not - did not test test, simply Poguanposhuai; search is unsuccessful, they feel depressed; to buy lottery tickets with the first prize was only a figure on the stomp beat their chests ... ...Strictly speaking, these trivial little too! But sometimes we do these things to worry all day, affecting many of the stem.Smile is a force used to be a smile, a smile used to the things people will not be led by the nose, facial expression is not just a smile or a state of mind, it should be a smile from the heart. The story of the soldiers that if only the blunt expression, that the general will be more than just a pleasing. So smile is a positive state of mind, you have a smile on other people, other people will also answer your smile.Smile is in the hearts of the Yi Shuguang, the hearts of bright, full of hope. Smile is embedded in the heart of love, the magic of love. In the face of your life with a smile! We find that the world is so beautiful.关于微笑的英语演讲稿篇6:Smile and the World Smiles With YouGood morning, ladies and gentlemen. Dear teachers, please let a smile every day!微笑的英语演讲稿篇4There is a kindness called smile Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen!Today I’d like to share my personal experience of happiness and bitterness of being an English teacher. I remember, five years ago, when I stood at the teacher’s desk for the first time, maybe because I was too young, maybe because I was too inexperienced, the students in my class paid no attention to me, didn’t behave themselves at all. Until then could I realized that it was my frozen eyes that make the students flinch, it was my stiff face that trod out the enthusiasm in the children’s hearts. How to stimulate my class and show my warmth, so that they can enjoy their study in English? I had a deep thought. It’s smile. There is a kindness called smile. It is the most beautiful language in the world. It can make distance no distance. “Just awake the students with a smiling face!”I said to myself. 最幸运一天英语作文

最幸运一天英语作文My Luckiest Day。

I have had many good days in my life, but the luckiest day of my life was the day I won the lottery. It was alife-changing experience that I will never forget. It all started when I decided to buy a lottery ticket on a whim. I had never bought one before, but I thought it would be fun to try my luck. I didn't think much of it at the time, but little did I know that my life was about to change forever. The day of the lottery drawing was a normal day for me.I went to work, came home, and checked my ticket online. I couldn't believe it when I saw that I had won the jackpot!I was in shock and didn't know what to do. I called my family and friends to share the news, and they were just as surprised as I was.The next few days were a blur of excitement and disbelief. I met with the lottery officials and collected my winnings, which were more than I could have ever imagined. I was able to pay off all of my debts, buy a new car, and take a dream vacation to Europe. It was a surreal experience that I will never forget. But the best part of winning the lottery was being able to help my family and friends. I was able to give back to the people who had supported me throughout my life, andthat was the most rewarding part of the experience. I was able to make a difference in their lives, and that made me feel truly lucky. In conclusion, winning the lottery was the luckiest day of my life. It was a life-changing experience that allowed me to fulfill my dreams and help the people I love. I will always be grateful for that day and the opportunities it brought me.。

小编精心收集了有关诚信的英语故事,供大家欣赏学习!有关诚信的英语故事篇1A Story about Honesty一个诚实的故事On February twelfth, a Friday night in New York in winter, a poor handsome young man called Jay stood near the railway station, playing a small concert on his violin. The music was so excellent that many people slowed down, sometimes gave a cheer or praise, and put some money into his hat.On Saturday, Jay came again. He took out a large piece of paper and laid it on the ground. Then he began playing with speed, lively and proud, in this public space. It seemed more pleasant to listen to, a perfect program of music. Before long, many people came, looking at the paper. Many pointed at it, wondering. It said, “Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat. Please come to claim it soon.” Jay knew the man was somewhere out there.Seeing this, people wondered what it could be. After about half an hour, a middle-aged man rushed through the many people to the young man and said, “I’m George. I knew you’d come here!”Then George explained the whole story. He bought a lottery ticket a few days ago. Yesterday he found that he won a prize of $500,000. He was very excited to be a winner. On his way home, he felt the music was so wonderful that he took out $100 and put it into the hat. However, the lottery ticket with his name on it was also mistakenly thrown in.Jay was a student at an arts school in Paris. He had booked a flight on an airplane that would leave from the airport that morning to go across the Atlantic. However, when he happened to find the ticket holder had won the lottery, he cancelled the flight and came back to the railway station. He knew to whom the ticket belonged. George, the owner of the object said that Jay was his hero.Later, after hearing the tale, someone asked Jay, “What a huge discovery! Why didn’t you take the lo ttery ticket for yourself?” He said, “Although I don’t have much money, I live happily in general; but if I lose honesty, I won’t be happy forever.I cannot afford to do that.”2月12日星期五的傍晚,在纽约,一个英俊而又贫穷的年轻人站在地铁站门口,他叫杰,正拉着他的小提琴开着属于自己的演奏会。

(双十一)有关买的英文表达词汇

(双十一)有关买的英文表达词汇

(双十一)有关买的英文表达词汇buy既可以作名词,也可以作动词,意为“购买,采购”。

常用句型:”buy sb. sth.”或“buy sth.for sb.”意为“为……买……”。

例:I am going to buy the birthday present for my friend.我要去为我的朋友买生日礼物。

shopping名词,意为“购物,买东西”。

常用短语:go shopping意为“去购物”。

例:Why not go shopping with me?和我一起去买东西吧?afford动词,意为“买得起,给予,提供”。

例:I can only afford the cheapest one.我只买得起最便宜的那一个。

如果表示“买不起,负担不起”,可以直接用cannot afford来表达。

例:He said he cannot afford a big house.

chop off hands意为“剁手”。

return/refundreturn作动词时,意为“返回”“把…..归还”等,作名词时,意为“返回”“恢复”“归还”。
