A few months ago my grandfather woke up complaining of chest pains, so my grandmother rushed him to hospital. Waiting to hear the result was a long and fearful experience, and finally the doctor came to tell us “it was a heart attack”. After many tests were done, the conclusion came that he would have to be operated on. I knew this was not good, for he was pretty old. My family sat down with him and told him it was his only choice. After talking with the doctors he made up his mind to go through with it.
The day before his surgery I was driving home, and as I stopped in the driveway I prayed to God. “Please just be with him, keep him safe, and make him healthy,”
I asked. “Please don’t take him away from me, for he is the greatest man in my life.” I sat there for a while and when I looked across my passenger seat I saw a big butterfly sitting there, moving its colorful wings. I reached over and put my fingers out, and the butterfly touched my hand. I started to cry. My grandpa would be certain to be all right. Otherwise, how could the butterfly have gotten into my car? I rolled down the window and let the butterfly out.
That night the doctors came in and said, “We have good news.” After looking deeper into his test result, they felt the operation would not be necessary, and claimed the heart damage had been fixed itself. As we all sat there looking around in total shock we knew we had just fixed blessed. Grandfather was able to come home the next day. I now wonder whether my praying worked, or Grandfather was stronger than we thought.

No one knows why we sleep, but it's certain that we need to. People who are prevented from sleeping begin to suffer obvious effects after a few days-they think less clearly, and they fall asleep during the working hours ; some may have hallucinations (幻觉).
There are no rules about sleep. Generally speaking , grown-ups sleep about 7 and half hours each night and probably more than 60 per cent get between seven and eight hours. But perhaps eight per cent are quite happy with 5 hours or less, and four per cent or so find that they want ten hours or more. If you feel all right, you're probably getting enough sleep. The important thing is not to worry how much other people get-their needs may be different. Exercise doesn't seem to increase the need sleep-office workers, for example, sleep for about as long as people doing physically active work.
Children sleep more than grown-ups----perhaps 14 to 18 hours soon after birth, going down to grown-up levels by early teen-age. Sleep patterns also tend to be different in the elderly, who may sleep less at night than they did when younger, find sleep getting more broken, and often make it a rule to sleep during the daytime.

A. they have hallucinations

C. Quite a few people need only 5 hours or less for them to sleep
D. No grown-ups sleep more than ten hours
62. Whether you have got enough sleep is judged by .
A. how many hours you have slept
B. how many hours you need to sleep
C. whether you do exercise and physical work
D. whether you feel fresh and energetic
63. According to the passage, a boy of 14 years old sleeps .
A. as long hours as a grown-up
B. much longer hours than a grown-up
C. for 14 hours each night
D. for less than 8 hours per night

My father
By Erma Bombeck
When I was a little kid, a father was like the light in the refrigerator.
Every home had one, but none really knew what either of them did once the door was shut.
My dad left the house every morning and always seemed glad to see everyone at night.
He opened the jar of pickles(泡菜)when no one else could.
He was the only one in the house who wasn’t afraid to go in the basement by himself.
He cut himself shaving, but no one kissed it or got excited about it. It was understood that whenever it rained, he got the car and brought it around to the door. When anyone was sick, he went out to get the prescription(处方)filled…
I was afraid of everyone else’s father but not my own. Once I made him tea. It was only sugar and water, but he sat on a small chair and said it was delicious. He looked very uncomfortable…
Whenever I played house, the mother doll had a lot to do. I never knew what to do with the daddy doll, so I had him say“I’m going off to work now, ”and threw him under the bed.
When I was nine years old, my father didn’t get up one morning and go to work.
He went to the hospital and died the next day…
I went to my room and felt under the bed for the father doll. Wen I found him, I dusted him off and put him on my bed.
He never did anything. I didn’t know his leaving would hurt so much.
I still didn’t know why.

A letter to Edward, a columnist (报刊专栏作家)
Dear Mr. Expert,
I grew up in an unhappy and abusive (辱骂的,咒骂的) home. I always promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now, at the age of 20, I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I’ve achieved.
Here’s the problem:several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine so much so that they make mine theirs.
It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me. But now they
seem to take it for granted that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.
I enjoy having my friends here sometimes—it makes the place feel comfortable and warm—but this is my home, not a party house. I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy(隐私)?
Joan
Edwa rd’s reply to Joan
Dear Joan,
If your family did’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.
And if you’ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere(气氛),you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with—or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s Okay to put your own needs first from time to time.
Be clear about the message you want to send. For example,“I really love your company but I also need some privacy. So please call before you come over.”
Edward
68. We can infer from the first letter that____.
A. Joan considers her friends more important than her privacy
B. Joan’s friends visit her more often than she can accept

A. She is afraid of hurting her friends.
B. She does not understand true friendship.
C. Her family experience stops her from doing so.
D. She does not put her needs first.
70.The underlined word “conflict” in the second letter means____.
A. dependent life
B. fierce fight
C. bad manners
D. painful feeling
71. The second letter suggests that Mr. Edward____.
A. is worried about Joan‘s problem
B. warns Joan not to quarrel with her friends
C. advises Joan on how to refuse people
D. encourages Joan to be brave enough

Every day we go to school and listen to the teacher, and the teacher will ask us some questions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask for your opinions of the work
of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about
these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are
not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends—they will
remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say. In the class, you must speak
so that they can hear you—loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to
shout or appearing to force yourself.
Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you.
The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease (not worried) but the
situation is somewhat different from that of an ordinary conversation. You must
take special care that you can be heard.
72. Usually, when you speak to the class, the class is____________.
A.noisy B. quiet C. having a rest D. serious
73. The situation in the class is _____than in your house.
A.not very different from
B. sometimes the same as
C. sometimes not different from
D. not the same as
74. If you are having a conversation with an official, the most important thing for you
is _________.
A. to show your ability
B. to be very gentle
C. to make sure that you can be heard
D. to put the official at ease
75. The main idea of the passage is _________.
A. that we should not talk in different ways in different situations
B.that we must speak loudly to make ourselves heard when stating our opinions
in serious situations
C.that we must keep silent at any time
D.that we must talk with the class

Last weekend I went on an eco-travel with a travel agency. All the way we enjoyed the beautiful scenery and fresh air. But a few of
us picked flowers while going sightseeing. Some even tried to catch
the birds they saw. What was worse, many tourists threw rubbish here
and there. The rubbish may do harm to wildlife there.
A true eco-travel should be like this: take nothing away but your
good memory; leave nothing behind but all the green trees and the
clean water.。
