It encourages people and organizations totry harder and do their best. That is why American society is largely organized around competitive battles. But a balance is needed. When there is too much competition, everybody loses.Take business as an example. When companies try to win at all costs, people often suffer. Companies fighting for survival may lower their prices, which is good for customers. But companies locked in competition also free workers, which can hurt thousands of families. Sometimes managers feel driven to use unfair tactics, as when companies exploit employees by failing to pay overtime wages. Competition that is out of control can hurt average Americans. Politics is another field where competition has gotten out of hand. At one time, competition in politics took place only during elections. Now it is constant. Politicians call one another names, accuse one another of crimes, and run ads attacking each other. The high cost of campaign ads makes it hard for candidates who aren’ t rich to be elected. No wonder many Americans say they have come to hate politics. Now competition has even come to the T V screen. Today’s most popular shows are ―reality‖ shows where people lie, cheat, and hurt each other. What kind of lesson about life does this send to young kids who may be watching? We will never do away with all competition – and we should not try to. But too much of a good thing can be bad and this is true of competition.

SAT Writing SampleThe SAT writing section is a crucial part of the exam, as it tests your ability to express ideas clearly and effectively. In this article, we will provide you with a sample SAT writing essay to help you understand the format and expectations of the test.Prompt: Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority? In today's society, questioning the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority is more important than ever. While some may argue that blindly following authority figures is the best course of action, I firmly believe that questioning authority is essential for progress and positive change.First and foremost, questioning authority encourages critical thinking and independent thought. When individuals are encouraged to challenge the status quo, they are more likely to come up with innovative solutions to complex problems. For example, throughout history, many groundbreaking scientific discoveries and socialadvancements have been made by individuals who dared to question the prevailing beliefs of their time.Furthermore, questioning authority helps to prevent abuse of power and corruption. When people in positions of authority are held accountable for their actions, they are less likely to engage in unethical behavior. In a democratic society, it is the responsibility of citizens to question the decisions of their leaders and ensure that they are acting in the best interests of the public. In addition, questioning authority fosters a culture of transparency and open communication. When leaders know that they will be held to a high standard and their decisions will be scrutinized, they are more likely to engage in honest and open dialogue with the public. This can lead to greater trust between the government and the people, as well as more effective and responsive leadership. Some may argue that questioning authority can lead to chaos and disorder. However, it is important to note that questioning authority does not mean disregarding it entirely. Rather, it means holding authority figures to a high standard and ensuring that their decisions are well-reasoned and in the best interest of the community. In conclusion, questioning the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority is not only important, but necessary for a healthy and functioning society. By encouraging critical thinking, preventing abuse of power, and fostering open communication, questioning authority is essential for progress and positive change. As citizens, it is our responsibility to hold our leaders accountable and ensure that they are acting in the best interests of the public.。

其中用on one hand,on the other 过渡。
过渡句对realism重定义:although commonly acknowledged as XXX, in most cases this word could also be acknowledged as XXX(我们要的定义)。

SAT Essay Sample (700 words)Prompt: Is it better to take risks or to play it safe?Taking Risks: A Pathway to Growth and SuccessWhen it comes to making decisions in life, people often find themselves standing at a crossroad between taking risks or playing it safe. While some advocate for a cautious approach to minimize potential failures and ensure stability, I believe that taking risks is essential for personal growth and success. In this essay, I will discuss how taking risks not only allows individuals to step out of their comfort zones, but also helps them to discover their true potentials and achieve greater heights.First and foremost, taking risks is crucial for personal growth and development. By challenging oneself and stepping outside of the familiar, individuals have the opportunity to learn and expand their horizons. When a person plays it safe, they remain within their comfort zones, limiting their exposure to new experiences and hindering their growth. On the other hand, taking risks exposes individuals to new challenges and opportunities, enabling them to learn and develop new skills. For example, an aspiring musician who takes the risk of performing in front of an audience not only gains valuable experience but also builds confidence and improves their skills. This growth and personal development would not have been possible if they had chosen to play it safe.In addition to personal growth, taking risks also allows individualsto discover their true potentials. Many people have talents and abilities that lie dormant or unrecognized until they take a leap of faith. By taking risks, individuals give themselves the opportunity to explore new avenues and uncover their hidden potentials. For instance, someone who has always had a passion for writing may never realize their talent until they take the risk of submitting their work for publication. Taking this leap of faith not only helps them to discover their writing abilities but also opens up new career opportunities that they may have otherwise missed out on. It is through taking risks that individuals uncover their true passions and talents, which can lead them to a path of fulfillment and success. Moreover, taking risks is essential for achieving greater success in life. History has shown that many of the most successful individuals are those who were willing to take risks. Whether it be entrepreneurs starting their own businesses or scientists pursuing revolutionary ideas, taking risks is often the catalyst for innovation and success. By taking calculated risks, individuals are able to break free from mediocrity and accomplish extraordinary feats. In contrast, those who choose to play it safe often find themselves stuck in a cycle of average and predictable outcomes. Taking risks opens the door to new opportunities and allows individuals to achieve success that would otherwise be unattainable. However, it is important to note that taking risks should be done intelligently and after careful consideration of the potential consequences. Blindly rushing into risks without assessing the risks involved can lead to detrimental outcomes. Therefore, individuals must strike a balance between taking calculated risksand playing it safe.In conclusion, taking risks is not only necessary for personal growth and development but also essential for discovering one's true potentials and achieving greater success. By stepping out of comfort zones and embracing new challenges, individuals can learn, grow, and excel in ways they never thought possible. While playing it safe may offer a sense of security, it often leads to a life of mediocrity and missed opportunities. As the saying goes, "with great risk comes great reward." Thus, it is better to take risks and seize the opportunities for growth and success that lie outside of our comfort zones.。
例如:Prompt (背景):A better understanding of other people contributes to the development of moral virtues. We shall be both kinder and fairer in our treatment of others if we understand them better. Understanding ourselves and understanding others are connected, since as human beings we all have things in common。
Assignment (任务,题目):Do we need other People in order to understand ourselves?
Assignment
我们需要注意的是SAT的Official Guide中清楚地说明“The essay readers are not lookin g for one correct viewpoint。
SAT 写作满分标准之结构参考SAT 写作满分标准中的第二个要求:is well organized and clearly focused, demonstrating clear coherence and smooth progression of ideas. Thesis. Sentence previewing three examples.P2 Transition + topic sentence. Support sentence. Additional support . Closing sentence summarizingthe paragraph .P3 Transition + topic sentence. Support sentence. Additional support. Closing sentence summarizing the paragraph .P4 Transition + topic sentence. Support sentence. Additional support . Closing sentence summarizingthe paragraph .P5 Conclusion.

Essay FormatsFORMAT I: the one-example essaySelect one suitable illustrative example from your personal experience, or your reading, or knowledge of current affairs, history, science etc. and use this as the basis for a discussion of the topic. The examp le should be specific and ‘real’ rather than invented. It is best to avoid religion or politics or anything controversial. There is no word limit but a limited space is provided. The space you have to fill is approximately one and a half sides of A4 paper. The space is sufficient to write a five-paragraph essay. You will have to write in pencil.Format of the essay:Paragraph 1: Introduction•Try to create interest in the topic. The introduction can be general but must include a thesis statement to point the reader in the right direction.Paragraph 2: Part I of the example•Describe the situation and cover about half the “example” here.Paragraph 3: Part II of the example•Finish the “example”.Paragraph 4: Discussion/analysis•Explain what your example shows. Extract the conclusions/moral lessons to show how it supports your thesis.Paragraph 5: General conclusion•Show how the example leads to more general conclusions about the topic. (If possible, relate to material from the introduction to round the essay off.)Sample essay 1 is an essay that uses this formatOne of the memorable images from Eisenstein’s classic silent film on the Russian Revolution is the toppling of a statue. The destruction of the statue symbolizes the throwing out of the old order along with its heroes and replacing it with a new. Considering this human tendency to ‘ring out the old and ring in the new’ it is surprising that any heroic figures from the past surviv e in the history books, but they do. There are some heroes who do not get erased from the pages. One of my personal all-time heroes is Marie Curie, the first woman to win the Nobel Prize. At a time when women were not allowed to enter the University of Warsaw, her home city, Marie worked as a governess beforegetting the opportunity to enroll in the Sorbonne in Paris. She graduated at the top of her class and became the first woman to take a degree in physics from the Sorbonne. But it is not simply for her breaking out of traditional molds that she is remembered. Her scientific work on radiation led to her two Nobel Prizes: the first joint with her husband, the second alone, after Pierre Curie’s death. She nearly did not get the second prize because of rumors of ‘misconduct’ in her private life. But she bravely went to Stockholm, despite opposition, and said that she believed that there was no connection between her private life and her scientific work. She died of cancer caused by exposure to radium, one of the elements that she discovered. Many great people from the past have had their reputations destroyed by exposure of their human frailties. But some, like Marie Curie, achieve such greatness that they will be remembered for their achievements. She symbolizes the human quest for knowledge and the capacity to sacrifice self for a higher goal. Women everywhere will gain strength from seeing one woman who could not he suppressed by outdated conventions. We need our heroes for the inspiration they offer to us and to future generations. Names such as Curie should not, and in fact cannot, be erased form the History books: they tell us so much about the human capacity to strive for excellence.FORMAT II: the two-example essayParagraph 1: Introduction•Explain, in your own words, what the issue is. Include a thesis statement, which is a clear statement of your point of view.Paragraph 2: Point one in support of your thesis•Explain the point you are making with the aid of a specific example.Paragraph 3: Point two in support of your thesis•Explain the point you are making with the aid of a specific exampleParagraph 4: Qualification•Explain that, under certain circumstances, the opposite point of view might be correct. (This is to show that you are aware of all aspects of the issue, even though you are 80-90% convinced of your thesis.) [Sometimes this paragraph is replaced by another point and/or further discussion or reasoning.] Paragraph 5: Reinforcement of thesis•Show how your viewpoint, despite the qualification you have just made, is more persuasive under the present circumstances.Sample essay 2 is an essay that uses this formatEvery age, and every culture has its heroes. In some times and places the heroes have been gods or god-likecreatures from mythology, or mortals apparently much above the mass of humanity. But today, sports stars, film stars, and political leaders with clay feet have replaced Ram, Achilles, Cleopatra, and Alexander. In fact there are almost no heroes of any age that can withstand our tendency to debunk. There are figures who will always be in the history books, but they won’t always be regarded as heroes.Let’s consider Julius Caesar – a hero in his own time but rega rded, thanks mainly to Shakespeare’s play, as a man with mortal failings: vain, superstitious and arrogant. He can no longer be thought of as a hero – just a man who came to prominence for his actions at a certain point in history. He has his place in the history of the Western world and his face on ancient coins, but scarcely fits our need for a hero for all times whom we can revere.Even Shakespeare himself, the writer of immortal plays and poetry cannot fit our need for a heroic figure. He created heroes but cannot qualify as one himself: we know too little about him. History will always try to heap accolades on the man who wrote such sublime words, but that doesn’t stop critics from trying to take away his glory. There are those who claim that he didn’t even write the plays.Of course the history books are full of great men and women who are long gone, and no doubt we can all find our personal heroes from their pages. But the dead cannot defend their reputations and so every biography and every film chips away at their greatness. Alexander the Great will never seem so great once we have seen the film. Finally, we must agree that very few ‘heroes’ will be revered for all time. The man who saves a child from a tsunami will find himself lauded in the newspapers for a few days, the sports superstars will last a little longer. But no modern human, except for a very few such as Mother Theresa, will be guaranteeda page in the book of all-time heroes.
