Secrecy obviously evaporates ##3## the invention is sold or used, and there is always the risk that in the meantime another inventor, working quite independently, will ##4## and patent the same discovery. A ##5## patent is the result of a bargain struck between an inventor and the ##6##, whereby in return for a limited period of monopoly (16 years in the U.K.), the inventor publish full details of his invention ##7## the public. Once the monopoly period expires, all those details of the invention pass ##8## the public domain. ##9## in the most exceptional circumstances is the life-span of a patent extended to alter this ##10## process of events. The longest extension ever granted was to George Valensi: his 1933 patent for color TV receiver circuitry was extended ##11## 1971, because for most of the patent’s normal ##12## there was no color TV to receive and thus no hope of reward for the invention. But even short extensions are normally extremely ##13## Because a patent ##14## perpetually published after it has expired, the shelves of the library ##15## to the British Patent Office contain details of literally millions of ideas that are free for anyone to use and, if ##16## than half a century, sometimes even re-patented. Indeed, patent experts often advise anyone wishing to avoid the high ##17## of conducting a search through live patents that the one ##18## way of avoiding infringement of an y other inventor’s rights is to plagiarize a ##19## patent. Likewise, because publication of an idea in any other form permanently invalidates further patents on that idea, it is traditionally safe to cull ideas from other ideas of ##20##. Much modern technological advance is based on these presumptions of legal security.1.A)coursesB)seriesC)arraysD)groups2.A)maintainB)graspC)keepD)attain3.A)beforeB)thatC)owingD)once4.A)installB)makeC)doD)build5.A)grantedB)offeredC)suggestedD)advised6.A)nationB)governmentC)stateD)country7.A)toB)forC)onD)of8.A)asB)intoC)forD)onto9.A)OnceB)WhileC)AsD)Only10.A)notionalB)noticeableC)normalD)natural11.A)toB)untilC)byD)before12.A)powerB)strengthC)vigourD)life13.A)hardlyB)seldomC)rareD)scarce14.A)remainsB)maintainsC)keepsD)holds15.A)relatedB)attachedC)linkedD)tied16.A)longerB)fartherC)elderD)older17.A)costB)priceC)valueD)expense18.A)legalB)sureC)worthyD)existing19.A)dyingB)diedC)dieD)dead20.A)characterB)wordC)printD)letter阅读理解People’s tastes in recreation differ widely. At a recent festival of pop-music in the Isle of Wight, crowds of teenagers flocked to listen to their favorite singers and musicians. They went with single railway tickets and slept in the open, a very risky thing to do in the climate of Britain, even in August. They were packed together like sardines for four days. There were innumerable thieves, a gang of roughs tried several times to break things up, and police were everywhere. At the end of the festival many young fans found themselves broke, with no money left, and they had difficulty in getting back home. Most people would consider these conditions a nightmare of discomfort: the fans appeared to enjoy it all enormously. Even in the overcrowded United Kingdom there are large tracts of open unspoilt country, where people with more traditional tastes can go for quiet, and for the sense of freedom they derive from contact with nature. In the national parks especially, modern development of housing and industry is strictly controlled. Visitors may walk for miles through landscape of the greatest beauty and wilderness, and often of considerable historic or scientific interest. Along the coasts of some of the maritime countries, public pathways have been created; these paths stretch for many miles along cliffs that look out on the Atlantic Ocean or the English Channel. Another path, lying inland, goes along the range of mountains in the north of England. It is called the Pennine Way. Here, the long distance walker and the nature lover can find much to enjoy, without feeling hemmed in by large numbers of their fellows. Yet few people make full use of the national parks established for everyone’s benefit. The commonest thing nowadays is for family groups to motor out to a beautiful spot and park their cars in a lay-by. A picnic basket is produced, along with a folding table and chairs, a kettle and a portable stove. They then settle down to a picnic in the lay-by beside the car. Apparently their idea of enjoyment is to get into the fresh air and amongst thecountry sights and sounds without having to walk a yard. They seem almost to like to hear and to smell the traffic.1. In Britain it is very risky to ______.A)go with a single railway ticketB)listen to pop-music at festivalsC)sleep in the openD)pack together in crowds2. Most people would think that this way of living was very _______.A)uncomfortableB)riskyC)difficultD)enjoyable3. Even in the overcrowded United Kingdom there are large _______.A)tracks through the open countryB)areas of country without soilC)areas of countryside not developedD)expanses of land where nobody works4. The Pennine Way _______.A)is built along the coastB)follows the length of the mountainsC)goes for miles along the cliffsD)is hemmed in by the mountains5. Family groups nowadays like to _______.A)have meals out of doors by the road-sideB)go for a walk away from homeC)drive out past the beautiful placesD)hear and smell the animalsBecause Ireland is an island geographically near the mainland of the United Kingdom, English rulers have fought since the Middle Ages to retain political control over it. Attracted by the lush farmland, English and Scottish landowners settled there, and in time of famine or political unrest, the local workers suffered, while their landlords were cushioned by their wealth. The history of modern Ireland is, in fact, largely a story of antagonism and resentment between the Ireland and their English and Scottish rulers. Since the 1920’s, Ireland has been divided into two parts: Northern Ireland (Ulster) and the Republic of Ireland (Eire). The north is still part of the United Kingdom and is predominantly Protestant; the south is an independent republic and is mainly Catholic. The majority in Ulster accept this political compromise, but the active and mainly Catholic minority are fighting for union with the independent republic of Southern Ireland. The IRA, the Irish Republican Army, have mounted bombing campaigns on military and civil targets in Ulster and England, they have sent letter-bombs to public figures, they have shot fellow Irishmen who support the British or belong to opposing, and now equally militant Protestant groups. As a result of this, the British have stationed an army in Belfast, the IRA have been outlawed, and several of them have spent many years in prison or have died in support of their cause. Whether this level of violence and repression is justifiable, and whether the violence that could result from political change would be worthwhile are the controversial issues that divide everybody involved.6. This passage suggests that the central problem is _________.A)many centuries oldB)about three centuries oldC)about eighty years oldD)a few years old7. The IRA is _______.A)part of the British armyB)part of the Ulster police forceC)a group of militant priestsD)a terrorist organization8. The writer feels that the controversy is about ______.A)the use of violenceB)political changeC)injusticeD) freedom9. The writer’s attitude towards the Irish is ________.A)intolerantB)sympatheticC)aggressiveD)militant10. The passage is ________.A)informationalB)descriptiveC)academicD)literaryThink of the computers in science-fiction films that can do everything, like those in The Matrix. In reality, even the superest of the supercomputers can’t read the way we do. They can’t learn or reason like us. Creating a computer that can read and learn at a sophisticated level is a major goal of artificial intelligence researchers. The US Pentagon’s Defense Advanced ResearchProject Agency (DARPA) is backing two Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) professors who are trying to build a machine that can learn by reading. “We have such a complex military now, it’s so high-tech, we need AI to help us,” said Selmer Bringsjord, director of RPI’s Artificial Intelligence and Reasoning Lab. He believes that artificial intelligence (AI) machines might be able to read military plans or manuals and adjust automatically in the midst of a heated battle. AI is already a part of our lives. It’s in programmes used by banks in evaluating borrower credit ratings, software that suggests corrected spellings for unrecognized words, and investigative programmes that search databases for non-obvious relationships. It’s complicated But reading is difficult for machines. Sentences must be converted into formal logic equations or other computer-friendly formats. Computers can do this on a modest scale. What has proved more elusive, however, is the software that can make sense of the verbal groups contained in a long, complicated sentence. “Natural language is very ambiguous,” said Boris Kats of MIT’s (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. “If you go beyond sentences like ‘John loves Mary,’ to something like a paragraph from The Wall Street Journal … there are some complex phenomena in language that are pretty hard to represent.” Bringsjord and fellow professor Konstantine Arkoudas want to create algorithms. These are mathematical formulas that might allow their “Poised-for-Learning” machine to convert sentences into formal logic. The next step would be to create an additional set of algorithms. These would allow the machine to use information it takes in to figure things out. Be quick please “In order to succeed, we’ll need systems that can remember where they’ve been and what they’ve seen and improve themselves over time,” said Ronald Brachman, director of DARPA’s Information Processing Technology Office. Machines that might be asked to help make battle-related decisions can’t adjust to quickly changing conditions in the field, Bringsjord said. He envisions AI robots of the future taking in all the relevant cultural, historical, and geographical data about an area. It’s not that crazy. Some people consider machines already cognitive (knowledgeable), depending on the definition of the word. In Texas, Cycorp has been building a “knowledge base” wit h the goal of becoming a store of human knowledge that can make intelligent decisions. Machines already exist that understand spoken words, recognize faces and make inferences based on experience. But, if you are worried about an all-knowing computer, you might be too early. Katz believes a computer that can reason at the level of even a baby is far off. “I’m still looking for that common sense that 3-year-olds have,” MIT’s Katz said.11. According to Selmer Bringsjord, the US military is so that they need AI to help them.A)very artificial and intelligentB)very investigative and non-obviousC)very complex and high-techD)very elusive and automatic12. The statem ent that “reading is difficult for machines” is true in that .A)sentences must be converted into formal logic equationsB)sentences must be converted into computer-friendly formatsC)the software that can understand long, complicated verbal groups is elusiveD)all of the above13. Selmer Bringsjord and his fellow professor plan to enable their “Poised-for-Learning” machine to figure things out by .A)using information it takes inB)creating two sets of algorithmsC)making formal logic formatsD)converting sentences into formal logic14. To MIT’s Boris Katz, a computer th at can reason at the human level .A)is still a long way from nowB)is already availableC)is still a great distance awayD)comes too early15. In reality, even the superest of the supercomputers can’t read the way we do.A)understand or interpret spellingsB)recognize written wordsC)obtain meaning from a printed textD)say the printed words。
河北工业大学商务英语试题2014春--经济(含答案)
2014 春1.What do you think globalization means? What global companies can you think of? What industries are they in? Do global companies do more harm than good?In my opinion, globalization means a company set up subsidiaries in the other countries and make them into local compani es.Also setting up new companies means the transferring of technology and capital. When offering to global companies ,we may easy to think of P&G,KFC,AIRBUS,NOKIA and so on.these companies are in different industries, some in instant fo od industries, some in heavy industries, some in aviation industries. It may different to say absolutely global companies do more harm or do more good.It obviously that global companies give us much cheaper ang higher quality products which m ake us enjoy a more comfortable life. Also global companies introduced more advanced technology and management skills .But on the other hand, with the strong competition, some national companies is eliminating and our national cuture is also dispearing with the step of globalization.2.Are you influenced by brands when you choose products or services? (Why or why not?) Would you consider buying a new brand of product newly introduced to the market? (Why or why not?) What do you think a company should do to create brand awareness for a new brand?I think whether I influenced by the brands depend on different kinds of things. When I choose something I use everydaysuch as shampoo,I will firstly take brands into consideration.Because I think shampoo is a kind of chemical product, some small companies may add put some unhealthy addition ,which may have a bad influence on my health. But when I choose cloths ,I think style and quality are important than brands.Generally I don’t want to have a try to a new brand of product, because I think it is not worthy for me to try a product with un certainty. But if there are some discount or free-trying,I’d like to have a try. For a company who want to create brand awareness,I have some suggestions.Firstly it’s necessary to make a product rocognisale.Secondly, the company should associate with specific quality with his brand.thirdly, forming a customer loyalty is impotant for a company.3.What is important when arranging a business trip abroad?✓Type of transport✓Accommodation✓Contact personOk. I think when arranging a business trip abroad there are three things to consider. First, you must choose the type of tran sport. As overseas travels involve long distances, the plane is the best choice for reaching your destination rapidly. Secondl y, you should also consider what accommodation best suits your purposes. Choosing a hotel with all modern conveniences and communication facilities will help you accomplish your tasks much better. Lastly, you should have a contact person w ho has important local connections and up-to-date local business information. C4.Do you think that the advertising practices described below are acceptable? Why?∙Using children in advertisements∙Using film stars in advertisements∙Promoting alcohol on TV∙Comparing your products to your competitors’ products5.Which of the following statements do you agree with? Why?✓People remember advertisements not products.✓Advertising raises prices.✓Advertising has a bad influence on children.I think people sometimes remember advertisements but not the uarally if a advertisement is too attractive ,the people who watch it may pay more attention to the advertisement rather than the product.but usually, people will remember the product also because there is a high frequency of broadcasting advertisement.actually advertusing will arise the price ofproduct,as we all know, advertising is very expensive,so the advertising increase the tolly cost of the product ,so the produc t will be sold at a higher price.but on the other hand ,advertising reduce the seeking cost of customers, customers can easily to fing out what they are want tobuy and avoid buying a wrong product,so it is difficult to say advertising raises prices ab solutely. I think there may be bad influence on children, because some companies in order to promote their sales, they may add some unhealthy factors to advertisement to draw children’s attention.so this may had bad influence on children.6.What is dress code? How important is personal appearance at work? For example? Think about formal clothing, uniforms, men with earrings and tattoos, etc.Dress cold is how you dress in certain place. For example if you work in the police-office ,you need to wear uniform. But if you work is designing something you need to wear casually as you want. I think the personal appearance have great relation to the work. If you work as a accountant ,your personal appearance should be neat and tidy. We usually see some barber with earring in order to show that they are fashion. But if a policeman withearring s we may think that he shuoldn’t be a good policeman. It will be amussing that a barber dressed in a uniform. That may also have bad influence on their job.7.Is free trade always a good thing? Do you think it leads to the creation of jobs, or to unemployment? Should certain industries be protected? If so, which? As everything in the world have two sides, free trade is not the exception. On one hand free trade may make our product i mport more easily, meanwhile, the product from the other countries will import to our country more easily . if the product we produced have a competitive advantages ,free trade may leads to creation of jobs. But if we don’t have advantages ,our factories may go to bankrupt, and a lot of people will out of work. In my opinion some indutries such as energy industrie s and military industries should be protected. Because these industries is the economic lifeline of our country. In ord er to get a good economy order ,we should protect these industries.8.What are most people’s main personal assets? How can a sole trader get the capital to set up a business? If a private limited company goes bankrupt, do the shareholders lose their personal assets? Why?House/building, land, investments, money, equipment, vehicles. Save personal capital, acquire personal capital (redundancy money/inheritance/lottery win), new mortgage, venture capital (money invested in a business for development or expansion by a third party as a commercial undertaking), bank loan, take on a partner. No, because the risk limited to loss of original investment.9.You have a shortlist of people for the post of Sales Manager. One of the female candidates is clearly the best qualified person for the job. However, you know that some of your best customers would prefer a man. If you appoint a woman you will probably lose some sales. What should you do?In my opinion, I prefer to choose the lady because of the following reasons.First of all, I strongly against sexual discrimination in business world. I believe male and female have no difference concer ning their abilities and have equal right to work, to get promotion and to lead a company. Instead, I think female is someti mes more suitable to be a leader. A female is more patient and easy-going. She can communicate with various people in all levels and solve complex problems between employees.Second, the female candidate is clearly the best qualified person for the job. I think my decision should bring the most ben efit to my company. So as to the common good of the whole company I insist to choose the best candidate. Last but not the least, I believe the lady can handle relationships with our main customers well. I think the customers are not very familiar with the new female Sales Manager at the beginning. We can guarantee our main customers that they will still have the spe cial privilege like before. For example the preferential price, the sole agency right and presell order. And after doing busin ess with each other for some time, our main customers will gradually find that female manager is as good as male. And our sales is not likely to lose.10.W hat is your opinion of the following strange inventions:✓The petless leash can mew or bard—depending on whether you want a non-existent cat or dog.✓Ice cubes that crackle louder according to the strength of your drink have been developed in Japan.11.W hat are the methods of communication to staff in most companies? (How?)In companies ,people often use telephone ,MSN and e-mails to communicate about work.People also use telephone to communiate how to do the work. They use e-mails to repot to leader what work they have finished. It is important to let my manager know your ideas about work. Because through communicate the work id eas ,my manager will get further understangding with me ,which may give me a hand on my work. I think people can be tr ained to communicate more efficiently. For example they use the same format to send and reback e-mails. If there is a mee ting people should give suggesttion in turn and should not interrupt other ‘s talking .12.D iscuss this list of unethical activities. Talk about your opinion for three of them: 1) avoiding paying tax; 2) Claiming extra expenses; 3) Using work facilities for private purposes; 4) Accepting praise for someone else’s ideas or work; 5) Selling a defective productNowadays, there are some unethical activities, such as avoiding paying tax, Claiming extra expenses, Selling a defective product and so on. Why are there so many unethical activities? In my opinion, Most of people avoiding paying tax is for the benefit of more. People Claiming extra expenses is to properly reduce the paper profits and taxes, so that they can increase the real profits. People selling the unqualified products, on the one hand, it is not only because the cost is low, but also because of the low prices can attract more consumers. But on the other hand, this can only lead to temporary economic growth, and can't maintain the long-term development of the enterprise. So, in order to the long-term and stable development of economy, we should try our best to avoid these unethical activities.13.H ow important is each of the following for showing a person’s status in an organisation? A reserved parking space;an office with a window; a uniform; a personal business card; your own office; a company car; your name on your door. There are many ways to show a person’s status in an organization. And the second is a company car, for you can do you jod more convenient. And next is a personal business card. As is known to all, a personal business card have a person of position, it is of course shows a person’s status in an organization. Other ways to show a person’s status in an organization are A reserved parking space; an office with a window; a uniform; your name on your door and so on.14.W hat’s important when choosing offices to rent?✓Location✓Facilities✓CostWhen it comes to rent offices, it is important that we take location , facilities and cost in to consideration. After a period at sea she must be overall checked and any necessary repairs must be made. There are also instances when a ship must be converted from being one kind of carrier to another. Most of today’s oil, for example, is carried by huge super-tankers. The smaller tankers, many of which are still in good condition, can be converted into bulk carriers(散货船)for the transport of sugar, coal or ore.Conversion or repair work is carried out in a dry dock, a huge hole cut into the ground and lined with concrete. At one end are large gates separating the dock from the river or sea. When these gates are opened, water pours into the dock andfills it. A ship can then enter the dock, where it is carefully fastened in an upright position. When the ship is positioned inside the dock, the gates are closed and the water is pumped out. The vessel slowly settles on to wooden blocks. Wooden supporters are put in position between the ship and the sides of the dock to prevent her from rolling over. Great care is taken to make sure that the shiprests evenly on the keel(龙骨)blocks to prevent damage being done.As soon as the ship is firmly positioned, repair or conversion work can begin on her body or superstructure.6. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. Choose the correct answer and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage OneHow much living space does a person need? What happens when his space requirements are not adequately met? Sociologists and psychologists are conducting experiments on rats to try to determine the effect of overcrowded conditions on man. Recent studies have shown that the behavior of rats is greatly affected by space. If rats have adequate living space, they eat well, sleep well, and reproduce well. However, if their living conditions become too crowded, their behavior patterns and even their health perceptibly change. They cannot sleep or eat well, and signs of fear and tension become obvious. The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and even kill each other. Thus for rats, population and violence are directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well? Is adequate space not only desirable, but also essential for human survival?51. This passage is mainly about ______.A) living space and behaviorB) population and living conditionsC) interesting experiments on ratsD) a natural law for human society52. What is the purpose of the experiments described in the passage?A) To determine how much living space a rat needs.B) To see what happens when rats live in a limited space.C) To know the likely effects of inadequate living space on human beings.D) To find out the relationship between population and living conditions.53. How would rats behave when their living conditions become too crowded?A) They eat a lot and become friendly to others.B) They sleep little and act quite peacefully.C) They eat little but sleep soundly.D) They become nervous and tend to be war-like.54. The passage suggests that overcrowded conditions ______.A) are directly related with populationB) may cause an increase in violenceC) may lead to high birth rateD) may bring about pollution problemsPassage TwoMany people hope that the whole world will one day speak a common language. Over the Years, people have made up new languages with this aim. At least six hundred languages have been developed in the search for a language which all human beings would be able to speak. The most famous one, Esperanto ( 世界语) , was the idea of Ludwig Zamenhof, a doctor in Warsaw. He published a book about his new language in 1887.To encourage people to learn the Language, he made it as simple as possible. Esperanto has never been accepted as an official world language, but it has been suggested as an auxiliary language. By 1950 it had been taught to one and a half million speakers, and it was spoken in six hundred schools. Today Esperanto is spoken by about eight million people, and more than one hundred newspapers and magazines in the language are published regularly throughout the world. Thousands of books have been written in Esperanto, including those translated from other languages.Today the need for a new auxiliary language like Esperanto seems less obvious. Throughout this century English has grown more and more important. It has become a second language for many millions of people. The fact that more are learning English shows that the use of English is still growing worldwide. No one would deny the usefulness of world language, but not many people think that Esperanto is likely to play such a role.55. Over the years, people have made up new languages in the hope that ______.A) all people will be able to speak a common languageB) people will learn a foreign language betterC) people can understand each other betterD) people will be able to speak several languages56. Zamenhof made the language as simple as possible because ______.A) he wanted people to learn it quicklyB) he hoped more and more people would be willing to learn itC) he wanted everyone to speak it without any difficultyD) he hoped it would be accepted as an official world language57. Which of the following is NOT true of English?A) It is widely taught in schools.B) It has become a second language for many millions of people.C) Many books have been written in English.D) It is less popular than Esperanto.58. What is the best title of the passage?A) The language made by one man.B) A talk about the world language.C) English as a second language for everyone.D) Esperanto—a better language than English.Passage ThreeAfter the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had news to report: The damage and death toll could have been much worse. More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25 ,000 victims.Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a. m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city ’ s buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.Despite the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints for improved quake - resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place. In the past, making structures quake - resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, that bend without breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations. The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports. Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake’s vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction. The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.59. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low was that ______.A) new computers had been installed in the buildingsB) it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highwaysC) large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holidayD) improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways60. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to ______.A) counterbalance an earthquake’s action on the buildingB) predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracyC) help strengthen the foundation of the buildingD) measure the impact of an earthquake’ s vibrations61. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing the damage caused byearthquakes attention should be focused on ______.A) the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital constructionB) the development of flexible building materialsC) the reduction of the impact of ground vibrationsD) early forecasts of earthquakes62. The main purpose of this passage is mostly to______.A) compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the U. S.B) encourage civil engineers to make extensive use of computersC) outline the history of the development of quake - resistant building materialsD) report new developments in constructing quake - resistant buildingSection BDirections; Match the Chinese sentences in the left column with the English in the right column, mark the corresponding letter on the Answer with a single line throughDirections: Put the following sentences into Chinese. (A)Forget planes trains or automobiles — if Joan Pick wants to go anywhere she runs. And she eats nothing but raw food. Is her lifestyle extreme or the future we must all face up to?W e all know we should reduce our carbon footprint but I don’ t think tha t many people would be prepared to go as far as Joan Pick. She hasn’ t driven a car since 1973. Her gas supply was cut off and her electricity usage is minimal. She eats only raw food and the only items she ever buys are new trainers—because she gets around by running everywhere. Pick,a scientist for many years,is 67 and claims her lifestyle keeps her healthy.Much as I admire Pick’ s low impact on this frazzled earth is her lifestyle all a bit extreme? She shrugs her shoulders. “Does it look like a hovel?“ she says looking at her flat. It doesn't; it is neat and tidy and the furniture is classic 1960s that she has had for 40 years. She listens to Classic F M and Radio 4 on an old secondhand stereo system. The only electricity she uses is a single light (low-energy bulbs of course) for the evenings and her kettle which not only makes the tea she drinks allclay but provides the hot water for laundry — which she does by hand 一 and bucket baths.Pick doesn't have heating. Doesn't she get cold? “Sometimes,”she s ays. How does she keep warm?“Clothing and exercise”she replies. She decided to start living like this “because I realized we have got the energy question totally wrong. I decided to imagine that the earth was a business in need of sound management. Weare all members of the board a shareholder a consumer and an employee. W e believed that fossil fuels were infinite but they are finite.”Her world has shrunk to the distance around her flat in south London that she can run to (which isn’ t small — she can run to Tower Bridge several miles away). These days Pick spends her time going to the library to read the papers —“It takes longer on a Thursday because I have to read the New Scientist as well but it' s so awful”— and looking through W h o ' s W h o and Google to find the addresses of the politicians scientists and industry leaders she wants to write to.Doesn' t she ever want to go on holiday? “Oh no”she says. “I’ ve never enjoyed going on holidays. You can learn about places by reading about them.”I wonder if her life isn’ t a bit isolating. She has never married and doesn' t have a partner. She admits that her friends and neighbors do think she's a bit mad. Maybe she is but perhaps we will all have to live like Pick one day.She follows a raw vegetarian die t. She says “I had tried every diet in the hook so I decided to try a raw-food vegetarian diet.”We go into her kitchen where she opens a large tub full of mixed seeds and nuts which forms the basis of her diet along with fruit and wheatgerm. “It' s very ea sy to live like this. I couldn't t imagine living any other way now”,she says.It seems a bit joyless to me hut Pickisn,t a joyless person; far from it—she' s delightful. I've made her late for her daily two-hour run. W e walk down the stairs together (she never uses the lift) and she runs off into the afternoon sunshine.Decide whether the following statements are True (T) or False (F).(1). Looking in the science fiction section,I saw the book Men Are from Mars,Women Are from Venus. Just as I opened the book Doctor McCoy from the Star ship Enterprise appeared at my side.“McCoy what are you doing here?”“I was caught in a temporal rift and now I am here to help you understand the d ifference between men and women.”“Wow that's great. I guess this book tells me all I need to know; men are from Mars andwomen are from Venus.”“Ofcourse,it is just that simple.”“Wait a minute ” I said. “Remember,we are in the science fiction section. I am not so sure men and women are quite this simple.”“Look Jim”McCoy began “I have been to both Mars and Venus and I have met men and women from all parts of the galaxy. Men and women are totally different. Men are from Mars ; they are obxxxxjective logical and competitive. Women are from Venus ; they are sensitive relational and loving. You can' t change that. Men and women speak totally different languages. All you can do is to try to understand it and live with it.”“But I don't get it “ I said.“I know a number of men who are relational subjective and loving and if I had to pick their planet of origin I would have to say Venus. And I also know a number of women who are logical obxxxxjective and as competitive as any man. If I had to pick their planet of origin I would have to say Mars. So what gives?”“Jim,I' m a doctor not a sex role philosopher. You know that men and women are totally different. Why are you trying to confuse things?”“Who is doing the confusing here? Why do we have to put all men on one p lanet and all women on another planet? It seems to me that all men and women are a combination of both Mars and Venus qualities in different degrees and combinations and each man and woman is totally unique. If you tell men that they are from Mars alone, then they will never look at or use their Venus qualities. If you tell women that they are from Venus alone then they will never look at or use their Mars qualities. Then men will let women do all the Venus work of life and women will look to men to do all the Mars work of life and then you have the most unfortunate situation of men and women setting up artificial roles for the sexes. It gets very had.,“You have a problem with that you silly-looking Earthling!”McCoy bellowed.“That view is utterly and totally unreasonable.”“Besides that?”“No besides that I have no problem.”“Good. I think.”“Tell you what “ I said trying to get out of a messy confrontation with an interstellar hero. “Why don' t we simply retitle the book.Let,s call it,Men are from Mars Women are fromVenus but Some Men are from Venus and Some Women are from Mars and All of God' s Children Have Both Mars and Venus Qualities Within Them.”“I don,t know ” McCoy sighed. “I am not sure it will sell. People want simple answers.”“When it comes to God's children” I whispered “there are no simple answers only great and wonderful mysteries.”McCoy looking old and tired sighed again. “Give them science fiction Jim give them science fiction. People like it and it sells.”“I know Doctor I know.”“Beam me up Scotty.”Decide whether the following statements are True (T) or False (F).(1). 2013年11月河北省成人本科英语真题试卷(题后含答案及解析)
2013年11月河北省成人本科英语真题试卷(题后含答案及解析)题型有: 2. Reading Comprehension 3. V ocabulary and Structure 5. Cloze 6. Translation 7. WritingPart I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Insurance is the sharing of risks. Nearly everyone is exposed to risk of some sort. The house -owner, for example, knows that his property can be damaged by fire; the ship -owner knows that his vessel may be lost at sea; the breadwinner knows that he may die at an early age and leave his family the poorer. On the other hand, not every house is damaged by fire nor every vessel lost at sea. If these persons each put a small sum into a pool, there will be enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer loss. In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance. Those who pay the contribution are known as “insured” and those who administer the pool of contributions as “insurers”. Not all risks lend themselves to being covered by insurance. Broadly speaking, the ordinary risks of business and speculation cannot be covered. The risk that buyers will not buy goods at the prices offered is not of a kind that can be statistically estimated - and risks can only be insured against if they can be so estimated. The legal basis of all insurance is the “policy”. This is the printed form of contract on paper of the best quality. It states that in return for the regular payment by the insured of a named sum of money, called the “premium”(保险费), which is usually paid every year, the insurer will pay a sum of money or compensation for loss, if the risk or event insured against actually happens. The workding of policies, particularly in marine insurance, often seems very old - fashioned, but there is a sound reason for this. Over a large number of years many law cases have been brought to clear up the meaning of doubtful phrases in policies. The law courts, in their judgments, have given these phrases a definite and indisputable meaning, and to avoid future disputes the phrases have continued to be used in policies even when they have passed out of normal use in speech.1.According to this passage, insurance is possible because______.A.everyone at some time suffers lossB.only a small proportion of the insured suffer lossC.nearly everyone suffers lossD.only insured people suffer loss正确答案:B解析:细节题,由第一段第五行If these persons……of the many可得出答案选B。

Recent studies haveshown that the behavior of rats is greatly affected by space. What is the purpose of theexperiments described in the passage?A) To determine how much living space a rat needs.B) To see what happens when rats live in a limited space.C) To know the likely effects of inadequate living space on human beings.D) To find out the relationship between population and living conditions.53. How would rats behave when their living conditions become too crowded? A) They eat a lot and become friendly to others.B) They sleep little and act quite peacefully.C) They eat little but sleep soundly.D) They become nervous and tend to be war-like.54. The passage suggests that overcrowded conditions ______.A) are directly related with populationB) may cause an increase in violenceC) may lead to high birth rateD) may bring about pollution problems Passage TwoMany people hope that the whole world will one day speak a common language. Today Esperanto isspoken by about eight million people, and more than one hundred newspapers and magazines in the language are published regularly throughout the world. No one would deny the usefulness of world language, but not many people think that Esperanto is likely to play such a role. 55. Over the years, people have made up new languages in the hope that ______. A) all people will be able to speak a common languageB) people will learn a foreign language betterC) people can understand each other betterD) people will be able to speak several languages56. What is the best title of the passage?A) The language made by one man.B) A talk about the world language.C) English as a second language for everyone.D) Esperanto—a better language than English.Passage ThreeAfter the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had news to report: The damage and death toll could have been much worse.More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25 ,000 victims.Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a. m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years havestrengthened the city ’ s buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.Despite the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their successes. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low was that ______.A) new computers had been installed in the buildingsB) it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highwaysC) large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holidayD) improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways 60. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to ______. A) counterbalance an earthquake’s action on the buildingB) predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracyC) help strengthen the foundation of the buildingD) measure the impact of an earthquake’ s vibrations61. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing the damage caused by earthquakes attention should be focused on ______.A) the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital constructionB) the development of flexible building materialsC) the reduction of the impact of ground vibrationsD) early forecasts of earthquakes62. The main purpose of this passage is mostly to______.A) compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the U. S.B) encourage civil engineers to makeextensive use of computersC) outline the history of the development of quake - resistant building materialsD) report new developments in constructing quake - resistant building Section BDirections; Match the Chinese sentences in the left column with the English in the right column, mark the corresponding letter on the Answer with a single linePart IV Translation Section A Directions: Put the following sentences into Chinese. She had a pupil who finished his work before all the others and needed a challenge. “Could he help in the library?” she asked, I said “Send him along.”Soon a slight, sandy-haired boy in jeans and a T-shirt appeared. I told him about the system used for shelving books. He picked up the idea immediately. Then I showed him a stack of cards for lone-overdue books that I was beginning to think had actually been returned but were misshelved with the wrong cards in them. He said: “Is it kind of detective job?” I nodded yes. Later, when he asked to be a librarian on a regular basis, it was easy to say yes. He worked untiringly. After a few weeks I found a note on my desk, inviting me to dinner at the boy’s home. At the end of the evening, his mother said that the family would be moving to another district. Her son’s first concern was leaving the library. When the time came, I said a reluctant goodbye. Though initially he had seemed an ordinary kid, his zeal had set him apart.I missed him but no for long. A few days later he popped through the door and joyfully announced, “The librarian over there doesn’t let boys work in the library. My mother got me transferred back to View Bridge. My dad will drop me off on his way to work. And if he can’t I’ll walk.”I should have had thought such focused determination would take that young man wherever he wanted to go. They left what was said to be a software log that included part of a user’s identification number, but it was partially masked “to hide the users who make this possible.”Monday’s attack was the most serious against a government World Wide Web site since the start of the year and similar in audacity to attacks last year against the Web site for the FBI, Senate,U.S. Army and White House.36. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You are required to choose the ONE that best fits into the statement. Mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Questions 16--20 are based on the following passage.Have you ever seen a movie in which a building was burned down or a bridge was destroyed? Have you seen films in which a train crashed or a ship sank into the ocean? If so, you may have wondered how these things could happen without harming the people in the film. The man who knows the answer is the “special-effects” man. He has one of the most important jobs in the film industry. He may be ordered to create a flood or to make a battlefield explode. But he may also be asked to create a special effect which is much less exciting, though just as important to the success of the film.In a scene for one movie, there was a big glass bowl filled water in which small fish were swimming. The director of the movie wanted the fish to stop swimming suddenly while they seemed to stare at an actor. Then the director wanted the fish to stop staring and swim away. But fish cannot be ordered to do anything. It was quite a problem. The special-effects man thought about this problem for a long time. The result was an idea for controlling the fish with a harmless use of electricity. First, he applied electricity to the fish bowl, causing the fish to be absolutely still. Then he rapidly reduced the amount of electricity, allowing the fish to swim away. Thus, he got the humorous effect that the director wanted. As in other parts of movie making, there are those who have developed particular skill in creating certain kinds of effects. For fires, the special-effects man does not trust the normal burning process of wood or other materials. He does not have time to wait until large flames appear. Usually he places metal pipes in the area that is to be burned. Gas flowing through the pipes burns instantly but can be kept under control easily by opening or closing the pipes. All this requires training, skill, and experience. It also adds a great deal to the expense of producing the film. It helps explain why so many movies are very expensive to make.16. All the following scenes are probably the results of special effects in films except that_____.A. a bridge was destroyedB. a building was burned downC. a person wondered how not to harm peopleD. a ship san into the ocean17. The job of a special-effects man is_____.A. most importantB. always excitingC. less importantD. very rewarding18. The special-effects man used electricity to control the fish in a bowl because_____.A. the fish cannot swim and stop freelyB. the fish cannot stare at the actorC. the fish cannot stay stillD. the fish cannot be ordered to do anything19. The special-effects man creates the effects of fire by_____.A. burning wood or other materialB. burning metal pipesC. opening and closing gas pipesD. waiting for large flames20. The passage is mainly about_____.A. the importance of a special-effects manB. the way to make special effectsC. the expense of special effectsD. the needs of special effectsPassage 2Questions 21-25 are based on the following passageBefore a new airliner goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests that are more important than all the others. One of them is very strange and the other is very dangerous. The first of these is called the “tank test”. A modern airliner must fly at very high altitudes. Air must be pumped into the place so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air, or “pressured”, the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure on a small window, for example, is like a huge foot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to crack, the plane would explode in the sky. This is what happened to the first Comets. In order to test the structure of the plane, it is lowered into a huge tank of water. Then it is filled with air. The pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is in the air. Finally, there is an explosion. Engineers can discover which part of the plane has cracked. This part is made stronger. The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flight in the air. The test pilot must find exactly what happens when all the engines are shut off at once. He takes the plane up very high. Then he shuts the engines off, the plane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilot’s job to find out how he can get control of the plane again. These two tests are examples of how planes are made safe before they ever carry passengers.21.The purpose of the “tank test” is to find out_______.A. how much air passengers need to breathe at certain altitudes.B. how much air can be pumped into the plane.C. what would happen if the plane crashed in the water.D. if there are any weak parts in the plane that would burst under pressure22. It can be inferred that during the test, ______.A. water is pumped into the plane instead of airB. more air is pumped into the plane than usualC. water exerts great pressure on the skin of the planeD. the weaker parts receive greater pressure23.The test is carried out under water because______.A. the pressure under water is greater than in the airB. the first Comets exploded in the waterC. it will be easier for engineers to find out where the crack isD. it can protect the testers from being injured24.A test flight is dangerous because the test pilot has to_____.A. fly his plane at a very high altitudeB. secure a safe landing in a plane crashC. find out how to handle a plane when its engines stop workingD. fix the damaged engines during the flight25. The passage implies that modern airlines are ________A. reliableB. dangerousC. complicatedD. efficientPassage 3Questions 26-30 are based on the following passageAmerican this year will swallow 15,000 tons of aspirin, one of the safest and most effective drugs invented by man. The most popular medicine in the world today, it is an effective pain reliever. Its bad effects are relatively mild, and it is cheap. For millions of people suffering from arthritis (关节炎), it is the only thing that works. Aspirin, in short, is truly the 20th-century wonder drug. It is also the second largest suicide drug and is the leading cause of poisoning among children. It has side effects that although relatively mild are largely unrecognized among users.Although aspirin was first sold by a German company in 1899, it has been around much longer than that. Hippocrates, in ancient Greece, understood the medical value of the leaves and tree bark which today are known to contain salicylates, the chemical in aspirin. During the 19th century, there was a great deal of experimentation in Europe with this chemical, and it led to the introduction of aspirin. By 1915, aspirin tablets were available in the United States.A small quantity of aspirin (two five-grain tablets) relieves pain and inflammation (发炎). It also reduces fever by interfering with some of the body's reactions. Specifically, aspirin seems to slow down the formation of the acids involved in pain and the complex chemical reactions that cause fever. The chemistry of these acids is not fully understood, but the slowing effect of aspirin is well known.Aspirin is very irritating to the stomach lining, and many aspirin takers complain about upset stomach. There is a right way and a wrong way to take aspirin. The best way is to chew the tablets before swallowing them with water, but few people can stand the bitter taste. Some people suggest crushing the tablets in milk or orange juice and drinking that.26. This passage discusses ________.A. only the good things about aspirinB. only the bad things about aspirinC. both the good and bad things about aspirinD. neither the good things nor the bad things about aspirin27. The information in Para. 2 shows that ________.A) aspirin can be dangerousB) aspirin is always safeC) aspirin has been around a long timeD) aspirin is very cheap28. In Para. 3, the word "salicylates" means "________".A) leaves and tree barkB) the chemical in aspirinC) aspirin tabletsD) the name of a German company29. The author of this article seems to be ________.A) in favor of aspirinB) against the use of aspirinC) not interested in aspirinD) experienced in how to take aspirin30. A good title for this passage would be ________.A) The Side Effects of AspirinB) Why I Take AspirinC) Aspirin: The Most Popular Medicine in the WorldD) The Commercial Value of AspirinSection B(15 points)Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. Part I Reading ComprehensionQuestions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Students can travel in the United States without spending too much money if they follow these suggestions.A travel agent can give you information on special economy fares for trains, buses and planes. Think about hiking or biking for a part of your trip, too. You’ll not only save money, but you’ll also see a lot more of the country. Some students may want to travel by car. Be sure to think about going with other students —many colleges have “ride boards” that list when and where other students plan to travel. Many radio stations provide the same sort of service —they announce who’s driving where, when, how many riders they will take and what the expenses will be.There are many inexpensive, older hotels near bus or train stations. Check your travel guide for names of the best. Many parts of the country also have youth hostels where young people can stay for only a few dollars a night. You don’t have to eat in restaurants all the time, but we don’t recommend a diet of candy and cola, either. You can usually get a healthy, cheap breakfast in a restaurant. If the weather is warm, you can buy food in supermarkets or at roadside stands and have a picnic for lunch. After a period at sea she must be overall checked and any necessary repairs must be made. There are also instances when a ship mustbe converted from being one kind of carrier to another. When these gates are opened, water pours into the dock and fills it. Great care is taken to make sure that the ship rests evenly on the keel(龙骨)blocks to prevent damage being done.As soon as the ship is firmly positioned, repair or conversion work can begin on her body or superstructure.6.
