I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, “Hi, girl! My name is Rose. I'm 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?”I laughed and enthusiastically(热情地)responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave mea giant squeeze.“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel!”“No seriously,” I said. I was curious what may have motiva ted her to be taking on this challenge at her age.“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!” she told me.Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us.“We do not stop playing because we ar e old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only two secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die!” she said.“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn 20 years old. If I am 87 years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn 88. Anybody can grow older. But every minute counts for young men,” she added.“The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change.Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do.The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”She concluded her speech by courageously singing The Song of Rose. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics(歌词)and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago.One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.11.Rose made herself known to the author in a________ manner.A.serious B.coldC.humorous D.crazy12.From the information provided in the passage, we know ________.A.Rose finished the college degree within a yearB.Rose did realize her dream of meeting a rich husband and getting married through college educationC.Rose enjoyed her campus life very muchD.Rose grew so old that she stopped playing13.Rose delivered the speech________.A.at the graduationB.which she prepared carefullyC.ended with The Song of RoseD.to challenge all the other speakers14.According to her speech, ________.A.even you have a dream, you won't succeedB.all people don't grow up while growing olderC.Rose usually regretted having done somethingD.a nineyearold is as old as an 87yearold if he doesn't do anythingBEarlier this month, the United States Library of Congress named Katherine Paterson the national ambassador for young people's literature. Unit 3 a taste of English humour reading课时作业Ⅰ.阅读理解(2018·福建莆田八中第二次月考)Imagine if our doctors are as easy to contact as our online friends and we can talk to them whenever we like to talk about our health concerns. With doctors already working so hard to provide the universal healthcare we all depend upon,it seems like the realm(领域) of science fiction. But telehealth(远程医疗),bringing care into the patient’s home,is now one of the popular words worldwide. In a population where more and more people, often the elderly, have long-term health problems, such as heart disease or breathing problems, the greater part of a doctor’s work can be done in the home.In the Internet age,the best way to do that is to have a doctor on a computer signed in to a network of patients in the same way we are connected to our Facebook friends.ParkinsonNet is a special website which links Parkinson’s disease sufferers with doctors and nurses. The professionals communicate on the website, where patients can also find information about treatment and can also request an at-home consultation via video link in their homes.Since it was introduced in 2004,ParkinsonNet has expanded into 66 regional networks.Evidence suggests that the website improves the quality of care, shifts care away from institutions and into the community and lowers healthcare costs.Patients also appreciated being linked to experts on their condition, rather than having a long wait to see a specialist.A patient with a long-term problem coming to a hospital for something routine is a waste of time for him and a waste of money for the hospital;so the more that can be done in the home, the better.England was developing similar models of care for more conditions and called ParkinsonNet “a very clear signal of the Unit 3 A taste of English humour第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

AI learnt to fly in a balloon in a race across the Atlantic Ocean in 1992 and became extremely interested in the sport. In the same way that a mountain climber dreams of climbing the world's highest mountain, I dreamed about flying non-stop around the world.I spent six years planning the flight and failed twice before I and my team managed to succeed. For some reason, we had to go first to North Africa to catch the right winds. That added 10,000 kilometres, and another week, to our journey. But because of this, our flight broke all the records for distance and time spent in the air.The most memorable part of the trip for me is that we lived in the air for 20 days and that the rising sun was the most amazing thing we saw. We had to go out of the balloon's capsule (舱), in which we were transported, three times while in the air to repair the fuel (燃料) system. We didn't have any safety equipment but when you are in a situation like that, you just do what you have to do without thinking about feeling afraid.Landing was a fantastic moment. I remember that when I got out of the capsule, I looked at my footprint in the sand. I remembered the astronaut Neil Armstrong, who was so happy to put his footprint on the moon, so far away from Earth. At that moment, I was so happy to have my foot back on Earth!21. The author became interested in ballooning because of _____.A. a cross-ocean raceB. a mountain climbC. a childhood dreamD. a long sea journey22. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2 about the author and his team's flight?A. They set a new record.B. They shortened their flight.C. Their flight went very smoothly.D. Their flight covered 10,000 kilometres.23. Why did the balloonists get out of the capsule during the flight?A. To fight their fear.B. To do some repair work.C. To admire the rising sun.D. To check safety equipment.24. The author mentioned Neil Armstrong to show his _____.A. regretB. surpriseC. respectD. pleasureBYou probably laugh at something you find funny, but how much do you really know about jokes and humour? Reader's Digest (RD) questioned several experts to give us some facts about them.RD:What’s the oldest joke in the world?“We can't know the oldest joke in the world because it would have existed earlier than writing,” says Christie Davies, professor of sociology at the University of Reading in the UK. The oldest joke book that's been found so far is the Greek Philogelos. It dates from the 4th century AD, although the jokes date from an earlier time. According to psychologist Steve Wilson, director of National Humor Month (April in the US), it contains 265 jokes.RD: Do some people fail to develop a sense of humour?Rod Martin, professor of psychology at the Western University in Canada, believes that while everyone is born without a sense of humour, as we develop, humour and laughter begin to appear. “Of course, some children are more serious, quiet, and less likely to laugh frequently, but this doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humour.” And according to Steve Wilson, there are no adults who don't have asense of humour. “Almost everyone is able to develop a sense of humour, and I teach people how,” he says.RD: Do people share a sense of humour unique to their own nation?Sense of humour does differ a lot by country, according to an author named Scott Weems. British humour is thought to be absurd (荒谬的) in nature, while American humour has an aggressive quality. According to a study, Germans are found to find everything funny.25. What do we know about the oldest joke book?A. It remains unknown.B. It was written in Greek.C. It was found in the UK.D. It contains the oldest joke.26. What does Rod Martin agree with about people's sense of humour?A. Nobody is born with a sense of humour.B. Some adults lose it when they grow up.C. Childhood is the best time to develop such ability.D. Children have a poorer sense of humour than adults.27. What kind of humour has an aggressive feature?A. British humour.B. German humour.C. Canadian humour.D. American humour.28. Where can you probably find the text?A. In a popular magazine.B. In a research paper.C. In a personal diary.D. In a textbook.CWhen people communicate, they use more than words. People's body language shows important information just like speech does. When someone lies with theirwords, their body language often tells the truth. The next time you wonder if someone is telling you the truth, try watching their hands.A person who is being honest will usually turn one or both of their palms (手掌) towards the other person. If a person is beginning to “open up” or share important information, you may notice them turn their palms towards you. Like most body language, this unconscious (无意识的) gesture usually gives the other person the feeling that the speaker is speaking honestly. When people lie, they tend to hide their palms by putting their hands behind their back or holding them. Others will keep their hands in their pockets if they are lying or trying to hide information. Salespeople are sometimes trained to watch out for this specific example of body language when a person is saying that they can't afford a product or service. Sometimes professional liars try to use open-palm gestures to fool others. But a careful listener may tell it is a lie through their body language such as lack of eye contact and touching the nose.Research has also suggested that if people normally turn their palms to face their listeners, they tend to be more honest themselves. If you want people's honesty, talk to them and ask them questions while keeping your palms turned out. This will put pressure on the people you are talking to.Human body language, emotion, and communication are directly connected. By showing that you are honest, with your palms towards people, your body language pushes others to tell you the truth.29. Turning one's palms towards others is a symbol of _____.A. confidenceB. politenessC. patienceD. honesty30. How is Paragraph 3 mainly developed?A. By telling stories.B. By giving examples.C. By making comparisons.D. By providing explanations.31. Talking with your palms open will encourage others to _____.A. behave activelyB. gesture carefullyC. be honest with youD. forget their pressureDThe famous website known as Facebook began as a Harvard University dropout's hobby. Unit 3 A taste of English humour Ⅰ.阅读理解(2017·成都外国语学校高三模拟)Something that has always interested me about Abraham Lincoln is, not surprisingly, his sense of humor. As far as I can tell, he's the first American President to have one. That's because the term “sense of humor” really wasn't in common usage until the eighteensixties and seventies. In the eighteenforties and fifties, it was called “the sense of the ridiculous”, and didn't have the positive connotations(隐含意义)that “sense of humor” has today. Back then, what was ridiculous was what invited ridicule(讥笑). Funniness and cruelty went hand in hand. Of course, they still do a lot of arminarm walking in our day as well.Lincoln's humor was very different, because, for one thing, it was actually “humor”as what the word meant in his time. We don't make the distinction between “wit(风趣)” and “humor” anymore; but in the nineteenth century people did. Wit was unpleasant and offensive while humor was pleasant and sympathetic. It's the difference we note now when we distinguish between “laughing with” and “laughing at”. Lincoln was much more about “laughing with” than “laughing at”. And when “laughing at”, it was often himself he was teasing. In the famous LincolnDouglas debates, when Douglas accused Lincoln of b eing twofaced, Lincoln replied, referencing his plain looking, “Honestly, if I were twofaced, would I be showing you this_one?” And, in a way, Lincoln's face itself tells us much about his sense of humor. You can comb through thousands of photographs of politicians, soldiers, and the like from Lincoln's time and not find a single smile.True, the long exposures(曝光)required for photographs of that time made smiling difficult. Yet Lincoln alone, as far as I can tell, overcame that difficulty.Interestingly, while having a sense of humor, or at least the appearance of one provided by comedy writers has become a necessary characteristic for an American President in our time, in the nineteenth century, too much humor was considered problem. And that was the c ase for Lincoln. A journalist covering the LincolnDouglas debates commented that “I could not take a real personal liking to the man, owing to an inborn weakness... that he was extremely fond of jokes, anecdotes and stories.”1.We can infer from Paragraph 2 that ________.A.the American President could influence the use of EnglishB.the term “sense of humor” wasn't invented until the 1860sC.what is funny to someone might be offensive to someone elseD.the concept of humor remains the same despite the passing of time2.The underlined words “this one” in Paragraph 4 refer to “________”.A.Lincoln's unattractive faceB.Lincoln's sense of humorC.the debate they were havingD.cruelty that went with funniness3.We rarely see people from Lincoln's time wear smile in their photos because ________.A.being humorous was considered inappropriateB.they found it quite funny to smile before cameraC.not smiling for photographs was the fashionD.photography technology then was not advanced4.What might the writer think of the journalist covering the LincolnDouglas debates?A.His comment accurately reflected his time.B.He created a false picture of Lincoln.C.He was prejudiced and selfcentered.D.He was brave to point out Lincoln's weakness.答案与解析本文主要介绍了林肯的幽默。

It might be a girlfriend,a marketing company, a boss,a policeman or a criminal.Whoever it is,they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen—the 21st century equal to being caught naked(裸露的).Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, though it's important to reveal(透露)yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages,at appropriate times.Actually few boundaries remain. The digital breadcrumbs(面包屑)you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like.In some cases,a simple Google search can reveal what you think.Like it or not, increasingly we_live_in_a_world_where_you_simply_cannot_keep_a_secret. The key question is:Does that matter? For many Americans, the answer apparently is“no”.When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found a majority of people are pessimistic about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is“slipping away, and that bothers me”.But people say one thing and do another.Only a small part of Americans change any behavior in an effort to preserve their privacy.Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths(收费亭)to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that contracts(跟踪) automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards.Privacy economist Alessandro Acquits has run a series of tests that reveal people will submit personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cent-off coupon(优惠券).But privacy does matter—at least sometimes. It's like health: when you haveit, you don't notice it.Only when it's gone do you wish you'd done more to protect it.16.From Paragraph 2,we can infer________.A.criminals are easily caught on the spot with advanced technologyB.people tend to be more frank with each other in the information age C.in the 21st century people try every means to look into others' secrets D.people's personal information is easily accessed without their knowledge 17.What would psychologists advise on the relationships between friends?A.There should be a distance even between friends.B.There should be fewer quarrels between friends.C.Friends should always be faithful to each other.D.Friends should open their hearts to each other.18.Why does the author say“we live in a world where you sim ply cannot keep a secret”?A.There are always people who are curious about other's affairs.B.Many search engines profit by revealing people's identities.C.People leave traces around when using modern technology.D.Modern society has finally developed into an open society.19.What do most Americans do with regard to privacy protection?A.They change behavior that might disclose their identity.B.They talk a lot but hardly do anything about it.C.They rely more and more on electronic equipment.D.They use various loyalty cards for business deals.20.According to the passage, privacy is like health in that ________.A.its importance is rarely understoodB.it is something that can easily be lostC.people will make every effort to keep itD.people don't treasure it until they lose itBSince we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human condition is our tendency to give and receive support from one another under stressful circumstances. Social support consists of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to cope with major life changes and daily hassles(困难). People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over a range of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, reveal that the presence of social support helps people fend off(抵挡,避开) illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives, and co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others despite our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find socialcompanionship supportive. Engaging in leisure-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting(转移……注意力) us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support—financial aid, material resources, and needed services—that reduces stress by helping us resolve and cope with our problems.21.Interpersonal relationships are important because ________.A.they are indispensable(不可缺少的) to people's social well-beingB.they awaken people's desire to exchange resourcesC.they help people to cope with life in the information ageD.they can cure a range of illnesses such as heart disease, etc.22.Research shows that people's physical and mental health________.A.relies on the social welfare system which supports themB.has much to do with the amount of support they get from othersC.depends on their ability to deal with daily worries and troublesD.is closely related to their strength for coping with major changes in their lives23.Which of the following is closest in mea ning to the word “cushions”(Line 1, Para.2) ?A.Adds up to.
