If they hated me they didn't talk to me about it," says a young German manager at a media firm in Frankfurt. Still, he says it was noticeable that when an employee 20 years older than him thanked him for buying lunch he had to swallow twice before adding the word "boss".Older workers sometimes envy being managed by a younger colleague. Precocious (老成的) youngsters, too, can feel awkward about bossing their elders around. But in Germany a shortage of skilled workers means that such situations are becoming even more common. The country's population is projected to shrink. As more Germans retire, fewer youngsters are entering the work-place to replace them. As a share of the working population the number of 15-to-24-year-olds has fallen by ten percent since the 1980s, says the German Federal Employment Agency. Firms competing to hire young talent have to promote them earlier as a result. A paper by professors at the university of Cambridge and WHU, a German business school, to be published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior, suggests this could be a problem. As in many countries, German work-places are legally obliged to overlook age when deciding whom to promote. Yet according to Jochen Menges, one of the authors, when an ordinary worker leap-frogs a more experienced one it can leave the latter with feelings of "anger, fear and disgust." People tend to judge their own standing by the success of their peers, and to see failure in being bossed about by someone younger. The relationship between feelings of anxiety and the age of the boss is clear, according to Mr Menges. A manager who is younger by one year is somewhat unsettling; a gap of 20 years is far more discouraging.German firms certainly shouldn't return to a system in which age equals to rank. But young people tend to be sensitive about managing upwards. And older workers should be encouraged to see the bright side of learning new skills. Daimler, a big German car firm, says it promotes age- mixed teams, so that knowledge can be transferred between generations. It also supports young managers by asking retired employees to provide temporary support.(1)For what does the author mention a young German manager and his experience in Paragraph 1?A. To introduce the topic.B. To present an argument.C. To attract readers' interest.D. To describe his own idea.(2)Why are some precocious youngsters bossing their elders around in Germany?A. Precocious youngsters are all skilled workers.B. Such situations are becoming more common.C. Fewer youngsters would like to do hard work.D. Companies compete fiercely to hire young talent.(3)In which of the following situations might an employee regard himself as a failure according to the passage?A. When he has to decide whom to promote.B. When he leap-frogs a more experienced worker.C. When he is being bossed about by someone younger.D. When he experiences feelings of anger, fear and disgust.(4)What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mean?A. A younger boss is more likely to be nervous and anxious.B. An employee with a younger boss tends to suffer from anxiety.C. There is a connection between anxiety and the age of promotion.D. The age of the boss and anxiety are closely related.(5)What can we learn from the passage?A. Qualified workers should be promoted to boss.B. Older workers should support younger managers.C. Older workers are no better than younger colleagues.D. You are never too old to learn, or too young to manage.【答案】(1)A(2)D(3)C(4)B(5)D【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,由于德国年轻人数量下降,竞相雇佣年轻人才的公司不得不更早地提拔年轻人来做管理人员,拥有一位年轻的老板对员工无形中也产生了焦虑感。

1A schoolgirl saved her father's life by kicking him in the chest after he suffered a serious allergic(过敏的)reaction which stopped his heart.Izzy, nine, restarted father Colm's heart by stamping(踩)on his chest after he fell down at home and stopped breathing.Izzy's mother,Debbie, immediately called 999 but Izzy knew doctors would never arrive in time to save her father,so she decided to use CPR.However, she quickly discovered her arms weren't strong enough,so she stamped on her father's chest instead.Debbie then took over with some more conventional chest compressions(按压)until the ambulance arrived.Izzy, who has been given a bravery award by her school, said:“I just kicked him really hard.My mum taught me CPR but I knew I wasn't strong enough to use hands.I was quite scared. The doctor said I might as well be a doctor or a nurse. My mum said that Dad was going to hospital with a big footprint on his chest.”40.What's the right order of the events?①Izzy kicked Colm.②Debbie called 999.③Izzy learned CPR.④Colm's heart stopped.A.③①②④B.④②③①C.③④②①D.④③①②解题:根据第六段中的My mum taught me CPR可知Izzy能实施急救是因为她母亲以前教过她急救措施,故此动作是最早的;再根据第二段中的stoppedbreathing,第三段中的called 999...so she decided to use CPR和第四段中的she stamped on her father's chest可知接下来的顺序。

阅读理解Mars(火星) appears to be flowing with small streams of salty water, at least in the summer, scientists reported Monday. "It suggests that it would be possible for there to be life today on Mars," NASA's science mission chief, John Grunsfeld, said at a news conference on September 28, 2015.The streams are about 12 to 15 feet wide and 300 feet or more long, scientists said. "What we're dealing with is wet soil, thin layers of wet soil, not standing water," said Aifred McEwen of the University of Arizona at Tueson, the principal scientist for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's high-resolution imaging experiment.Because liquid water is essential to life, the findings could have major implications for the possibility of Martian life. The researchers said further exploration is needed to determine whether microscopic life exists on the planet. The presence of liquid water could also make life easier for astronauts visiting or living on Mars. Water could be used for drinking and for creating oxygen and rocket fuel. NASA's goal is to send humans there in the 2030s.The evidence of flowing water consists largely of dark, narrow streaks(条痕) on the surface that tend to appear and grow during the warmest Martian months and fade the rest of the year.Mars is extremely cold even in summer, and the streaks are in places where the temperature is as low as minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit. But salt can lower the freezing point of water and melt ice.The source of the water is a mystery. Scientists noted it could be melting ice. I visited Elba last June, joining Mary and John on a bicycling vacation. They made the arrangements for the car, hotel and bicycles. I studied the history of the island, which of course particularly features Napoleon.Napoleon (now I know) picked Elba as a place for peace when he was forced to give up the throne (王权) as Emperor of France in 1814. Far from being a prison island, Elba is beautiful with towering mountains, thick forests and sweeping bays and beaches. It is also an island filled with treasure. Very early on this island, locals discovered rich deposits of iron. Soon outsiders, too, discovered the iron and 150 other valuable minerals on this little piece of land. Long before Etruscans and other Greeks set foot on it, Dorians had moved in by the tenth century B. C. and were mining the island. The Romans ruled next, obtaining the minerals and building grand houses overlooking the sea. From the twelfth century until the nineteenth, the island was traded back and forth and was passed to France in 1802. Then came Napoleon, the new ruler of Elba.I was eager to visit his house in Portoferraio. The Emperor lived with his court and his mother, but his wife, Marie Louise had ensconced herself in the splendid Viennese palace of her father, Emperor of Austria. She lived safely there and showed little interest in visiting her husband in his mini-kingdom. Apparently, Napoleon wasn't troubled much by this. He was too busy riding everywhere on horseback, building roads, modernizing agriculture and, above all, sharpening his tiny army and navy into readiness for his escape. In the formal gardens behind the house it seemed to me that I could imagine the exiled (流放的) conqueror's anxious thoughts. He might gaze over where I stood now, toward the lighthouse of the Stella fort, the sandy bay, and across it, the green mountains of the Tuscan coast. Napoleon spent only ten months here before making his victorious return to France and the throne.(1)What did the author do for the visit to Elba?A. He did research on its past.B. He arranged transportation.C. He planned bicycling routes.D. He booked accommodation.(2)Who might be the earliest outsiders to Elba according to the text?A. Napoleon and his army.B. Etruscans and other Greeks.C. Dorians.D. Romans.(3)What does the underlined word "ensconced" probably mean?A.Settled.B.Locked.C.Cured.D.Controlled.(4)What came to the author's mind during his visit to Napoleon's gardens?A.Beautiful views on Elba.B.Terrible living conditions on Elba.C.Napoleon's ambition to regain power.D.Hardship of Napoleon's return to France.【答案】(1)A(2)C(3)A(4)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇记叙文,作者讲述了对拿破仑曾经流放地Elba岛的参观之旅,作者介绍了Elba岛的历史背景与拿破仑在岛上的生活事迹。

But that doesn't stop hikers from attempting the 1.3-mile hiking to the top of the city's famed Camelback Mountain. Signs warn that the trail is "extremely difficult". If you continue, a posted checklist suggests at least a liter of water per person. And if you're still not stopped, another sign farther up declares: "If you're halfway through your water, turn around!"Unfortunately, many people to not take the warnings seriously. Fortunate y, Scott Cullymore does. The 53-year-old Cullymore can be found hiking up and down Camelback a couple of times a day, giving out cold bottles of water to worn-out hikers. He has helped hydrate so many hikers that he has earned a heavenly nickname: the Water Angel.Cullymore was on Camelback Mountain one day in 2015 when a British tourist died after being lost for nearly six hours in the July heat. "You think you know the heat, but then you get out here in the desert and it surrounds you like a blanket," said Austin Hill, who was hiking with a high school friend. A few years back I worked in a university building that also housed a department full of psychologists, all of whom seemed to see us as perfect guinea pigs(豚鼠) for their latest theories. If an eager graduate student showed up in my office bearing desserts and asked me to pick one, I'd cast a careful glance and ask "Why?" before grabbing the apple pie.So one day, when someone from the Psychology Department posted instructions in the bathroom persuading all of us to "Think about five things for which you're grateful every day for a week!" my response was frankly doubtful. I did the math. Five things a day for seven days is a lot of brainpower to expend without so much as the promise of an apple pie.I wandered into the office of Heidi Zetzer, the director of our school's Psychological Services Clinic. "What's with the gratitude thing?" I asked. You don't ask an academic question-even a simple one unless you're prepared for a long answer. Heidi came alive, and I sat down. That's when I first heard the term "positive psychology". The gratitude thing, as I had called it, was but one small and simple element of the practice. "Kind of like training the brain to focus on joy," my friend Heidi explained. "It's only a week," she urged. "Try it." I did. And guess what? It worked. Every day for a week, I found five distinct things for which I was thankful. They had to be different every day. I couldn't get away with just being grateful for my wonderful husband. But I could, suggested Collie Conoley, another positive psychologist, express my gratitude for specific aspects of a certain person each day. He's a great cook. He always puts our family first.Life will never be perfect. I still see new stories that annoy me. The traffic in my city is maddening. I wish I could speed up my recovery. But with just one simple exercise, I'm rediscovering the peace of that old saying: accepting the things I can't change, working without complaint to change what I can, and being wise enough to know the difference. And all it took was a little gratitude.(1)What's the author's attitude toward the student with desserts?A. Cautious.B. Respectful.C. Indifferent.D. Supportive.(2)Why was the author doubtful about the instructions?A. Because she thought it wasn't worth the effort.B. Because she didn't like expressing thanks often.C. Because she needed to ask her friend to do it first.D. Because she could do five things every day easily.(3)What does Collie Conoley suggest the author should do?A. Be grateful to her wonderful husband.B. Be thankful for things but not people.C. Be a great cook and put her family first.D. Be specific about what she's thankful for.(4)What's the best title for the text?A. Don't Be Bothered by Small ThingsB. We Can Change Everything If We WantC. Practicing Gratitude Changed My LifeD. Being Grateful to One Good Person【答案】(1)A(2)A(3)D(4)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文,在一个星期的时间里,作者坚持每天都能发现五件她特别感激的事情,而且每天都有所不同。

以when, where, what, which, who, how much, how many等疑问词开头引出的问题;2. 以According to …… 1) Certain animals change their choice of food when _______.2) Daylight Saving Time was introduced in Tasmania _______.3) The writer thought Amery ―a fair game‖ because the boy _______.4) Mr. Dunlop established his business _______.

2021高考英语二轮复习优选练阅读理解提升练细节理解题2(限时:25分钟)ATips for Cycle TripsCycling has many advantages as a form of travel, as it isthe fastest way to travel by human power, and slow enough to allowthe type of local involvement that is impossible with poweredtravel. Cycle travel is also a cheap form of transportation.DistanceOn level terrain, without a headwind, a cyclist of average fitness on a touring bike can comfortably cover 60-120km a day. Distances of up to 250km a day are possible, but anything much beyond 120km will require considerable physical tension and not allow many stops to enjoy the places you visit. For many, 80-100km a day will be the most suitable distance to aim for, as it will give a sense of achievement and also leave plenty of time for meals and activities.GeographyThe gradient (坡度)of the trip will reduce your range. A basic rule is that for every 100 metres of altitude you climb, you should add an extra 15 minutes to your journey time. In hilly or mountainous areas, the easiest routes for cycling are downstream along major rivers, as overall they will be downhill. A long, roundabout route along a river will usually be easier than a short, direct route over a hill or mountain pass. However, it is worth bearing in mind that the most scenic routes often come from hilly terrain.EatFood choice depends largely on where you are, so see the respective sections for more information about foods. As you will be working hard, it's important to get enough energy in your food. On long trips away from major towns there may be little quality food available, so be prepared to live on candy bars, prepared meat products and the like if the need arises.SleepWhile you can take a tent with you, many hotels and especially campsites can accommodate cyclists. However, there are also some hotels that may be less used toaccommodating cyclists. If you are exploring an unfamiliar world, asking about the accommodation spares you the search for a new place to stay after a long exhausting day of travel.[语篇解读] 本文介绍了关于骑车旅行的距离,地理位置及过程中的饮食和睡觉等注意事项。
