An Appreciation of English and American Literature

（Course Introduction）

I. Aims of Learning

1. To provide the learners with a brief outline of the history of British and American literature as well as a knowledge of major literary schools and masters;

2. To consolidate and extend the learners’ knowledge and fluency in English through interaction with literary texts;

3. To introduce the learners to imaginative use of English and help them towards an appreciation of literary language and literature;

4. To cultivate in the learners a literary and cultural awareness and receptivity which should help them live and work better in the present globalizing age;

5. To prepare the learners for the study of literature in English at a higher level;

6. To help the learners develop an interest in and, hopefully, the habit of reading extensively for the pleasure as well as enrichment of their life.
