One day a man was walking in the street when he met a penguin (企鹅). It was a handsome bird, and not timid at all.
It seemed to take an immediate liking to the man, because it waddled (摇摇摆摆地走) up to him and then followed him wherever he went.
This was amusing for a while but eventually became rather embarrassing.
“Go away, you silly bird,” the man said to the penguin, but the bird ignored (不理) him. It simply would not leave him alone. Wherever he went, the bird went, too.
At last, in desperation, the man walked into a police station.
“Excuse me, officer,” he said, “but I need some advice. I met this penguin in the street, and I don't know what to do with it.”
A bored policeman looked up from what he was writing and said, “Just take it to the zoo, sir.” “Oh, all right,” the man said.
The next day the man was walking along the street, still accompanied by the penguin, when he met the policeman he'd spoken to the day before.
The policeman was not pleased to see them.
“I thought I advised you to take that animal to the zoo,” he said.
“Well, yes, officer, you did. And I did take him to the zoo,” the man explained. “And we had a great time. But we can't go to the zoo every day. I thought today I'd take him to the movies.”

June 26, 2000—the Human Genome (基因组) Project, a great $3 billion, 15-year task aimed at drawing the genetic (遗传的) map of humans, is now more than 90 percent completed. The scientific and medical communities (团体) are very excited about the chances genetic research provides for getting rid of diseases and prolonging (延长) human life. But those communities and policy makers are also careful about the scientific door they are opening as
the project uncovers the mysteries of life.
For the last few years, the genetic advances in the fast developing field of biotechnology (生物技术) have provided material for all kinds of work, but the developments of modern science in unlocking the secrets of the human genetic code (密码) have opened a world of possibilities for human health, as well as for the popular imagination.
While European and Japanese researchers are making rapid progress in decoding (解码) human DNA, the leading organization for genetic research is in the United States, which began in 1990, is “unlocking the code” of the human body to learn how to defeat fatal diseases. Already the Human Genome Project has become widely known and praised for finding the genes connected with as yet terrible diseases, and making progress toward separating the genes that show a sign of breast cancer or AIDS.
Once these genes are found and studied, researchers can develop new ways to attack infections (传染) and genetic diseases. Medical companies are very interested in mapping the human genome, as they expect to develop a lot of new drugs for these illnesses.

LEEDS, England—A Leeds University psychology professor is teaching a course to help dozens of Britons forgive their enemies.
“The hatred (strong dislike) we hold within us is a cancer,” Professor Ken Hart said, adding that holding in anger can lead to problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.
More than 70 people have become members in Hart's first 20-week workshop in London—a course he says is the first of its kind in the world.
“These are people w ho are sick and tired of living with the memory. They realize their bitterness is a poison they think they can pour out, but they end by drinking it themselves,” said Canadian-born Hart.
The students meet in groups of eight to ten for two-hour workshop with a visit to an adviser every night.
The course, ending in July, is expected to get rid of the cancer of hate in these people.
“People have lots of wrong attitudes towards forgiveness,” he said, “people can't tell forgiveness from forgetting.”
“Forgiveness is something of changing from a wrong attitude to a right one.”
Hart and his team have created instructions to provide the training needed.
“The main idea is to give your guidelines on how to look at various dangers that affect you, and how to chang e your attitude towards the person you are angry with,” said Norman Claringbull, a senior expert on the forgiveness project.
Hart said he believes in the forgiveness project.
Hart said he believes forgiveness is a skill that can be taught, as these people “want to get free of the past”.
36. From this passage we can find that with hatred, people likely have trouble connected with _________.
37. If you are angry with somebody, you should _________.

We often hear the phrase: “You've a greater chance
of being struck by lightning(闪电).” It is used to
describe something that hasn't got much chance of
happening. However, the common saying undermines (掩盖)
the very real 41 of lightning.
Last Friday, at least 5 people were killed by
lightning in Nepal 尼泊尔).
Lightning strikes are the 42 most common cause of deaths during natural disasters in the US. The first is floods. Around 400 people nationwide are struck by lightning each year, and of those, 73 people die. And more people are 43 by lightning than by tornadoes and hurricanes.
Because lightning kills only one or two people at a 44 , its danger does not receive as much attention as other disasters.
So to raise awareness, the US has made June 22—28 National Lightning Safety Week. It aims to warn the 45 of the dangers of lightning and provides safety tips during thunderstorms.
“If you hear thunder, you are in danger from lightning,” said Rocky Lopes, a
disaster educator at the American Red Cross.
“Thunder means that lightning is close 46 to hit you
at 47 minute, so you should move indoors immediately and stay
there 48 after the storm has ended. The single 49 important thing to remember is to seek shelter (庇护),” Lopes said.
Summer is the peak time for lightning storms, so when lightning
strikes 50 the sky, remember these 51 tips:

(57) The people in Algeciras have long hot summers and they forget how cold it can be in the few short weeks of winter. In these weeks it can be very cold at night. The fire was hardly big enough to give warmth to two people, but as soon as I moved my chair towards the fire, the stranger moved his chair to one side.
“Don't move,” I said. “There's plenty of room for two.”
I took out a cigar and lit it. (58) Then I turned to the stranger and gave him a cigar. They were very good cigars and people did not often refuse one.
“That's very good of you,” the stranger said and took the cigar from my hand.
(59) From the way he spoke, I realized that he had been born in Glasgow. A person from Glasgow speaks in a kind of singing way.
When you give someone a cigar, it is usually an invitation to talk. But apart from these few words of thanks, the stranger said nothing. He huddled over his half of the fire and returned to his thoughts.

My Mother
My mother is the loveliest person in the world. She loves me but not excessively. She is always kind and gentle to me. Every mother is kind to her children but my mother's kindness to me is unlike others.
She seldom gets angry and never loses her temper. When I am naughty and turn a deaf
ear to her advice, she only pretends to be angry and walks away. After a while she will come back to me and ask me whether I'd like to be a good child. But if I make a big mistake, she would scold and even beat me. She used to say “Spare the rod and spoil the child”. But when she is scolding or beating me, she herself weeps because she knows what it is like to be scolded or beaten. This makes me obey my mother, not so much for fear of being scolded, or beaten as for saving her tears.
My mother is busy all day. She has
too much to do in bringing me up. She
cooks for us, washes our clothes and also
helps me with my homework. Her face is
wrinkled and she is not very strong, but
she works as hard as ever. She works in
this manner without any reward. Her only
reward is to see me growing up.
I love and respect my dear mother.

B) One possible version:
The Balance of Nature
Here we see some animals and a kind of flower. They live under the same sky. They seem to have peaceful life, but actually they are not so friendly to each other. Butterflies live on flowers. When a butterfly appears over a frog, it may be killed by the frog. And a snake enjoys swallowing a frog. As a hawk catches sight of a snake, it would have the snake for
its good dinner. They obey such a natural law all the time. So we shouldn't break the balance of nature. Only in this way can we see various animals and plants on the earth.
How important and necessary it is for us to keep the balance of nature!。
