13、Have you ever heard of "a ball of energy"? People often use it to describe very active children. But today we tell about an invention called the soccket, that is a real soccer ball of energy. Julia Silverman explains that in fact the soccket is a portable generator(便携式发电机).
Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews developed the soccket as part of a group project for an engineering class at Harvard University.
There are mechanisms(装置) in a soccket. When you kick, hit or throw it, energy is then kept in it by these mechanisms instead of disappearing into the environment.
Then the user can put something directly into the ball, like a lamp, or a mobile phone charger so that they can get energy from it.
For every fifteen minutes of the game play, the soccket can provide enough electricity(电) for an LED lamp for three hours, and the ball can store(储藏) up to 24 hours’ electricity.
The International Energy Association reported last year that nearly one and a half billion people in the world had no electricity to use, and most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa and in India and other countries in Asia.
Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews both had experiences in developing countries before they began the project. They knew that power shortages are a serious problem in really areas.
There’s an energy crisis in the world. One out of every five people in the world don’t have any electricity. And besides that, there are a lot of health problems because what people use instead of the electricity are harmful choices like
kerosene(煤油) lamps, which produce a lot of smoke.
Julia Silverman says the soccket ball is one small solution(解决方法) to a big problem.
Jessica Matthews and Julia Silverman hope their soccket ball will shine more light on the problem of power
short ages. It offers people a chance to put their energy into the world’s most popular sport and get some energy in return.

16、London used to be “foggy”--- the “fog” was in fact smog, a mixtureof smoke and fog. In other words, it was caused by air pollution. In London, some of this pollution came from factories, but a lot of it came from the coal that people burnt i n their houses to keep warm during the winter. By the 1950s, London’s smog problem had become so bad that the government decided to do something to clean up the air. It didn’t allow people to born coal in any British city. A few years later, the air became much cleaner.
Today many Chinese cities face the same problem with air pollution that London faced sixty years ago. However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve. One reason is that more of pollution comes from big factories, rather than from the coal burnt in people’s houses. If these factories were suddenly closed, it would harm the economy and lots of people would lose their jobs. Another reason is that changing from coal to cleaner fuels is quite expensive.
However, the air in many cities will become cleaner, as the government and ordinary people pay more and more attention to protecting the environment.

17、Are you having a problem going to sleep? Have you tried many ways such as drinking a glass of warm milk or listening to some soft music or counting sheep but it still does not work? Cooling down your brain may be a great way to help you get good sleep.
A new study has found that you might fall asleep quicker if you try cooling down your brain. Daniel and Eric from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School led the study. They examined twelve people who had insomnia. The other twelve had no problems in sleeping. Each of them wore a cap on their heads at bed time.
The caps had tubes (管) inside filled with water. The researchers moved the water through the tubes and then changed the temperature of the water. People had trouble sleeping (called “patients” in the following parts of the passage) often had more chemical reactions (化学反应) in their brains. The researchers thought lowering the temperature of the head might help.
On the first two nights of testing, the patients wore no water caps. During the next two nights, the caps were worn, but the water was not cooled. Then the researchers cooled the water a little for another two nights. On the final two nights of the study, the temperature of the water was made much cooler.
The situation of the insomnia did not become better until the temperature was about 14ºC.Most of the patients fell asleep faster and slept better when the coolest water was moving around their heads.
This is the only beginning of the head temperature study. But they believe they have discovered something important that needs more research.

19、What can you do for your school?
As we all know we will leave school in June. So this week our class hold a class meeting. We discussed about what we can
do for our school. All of us gave our own ideas. Students in Group 1 thought that we could present our used books and school things to the students in Grade 7 and Grade 8. Especially, we can give them to the poor students. They need our help. Students in Group 2 thought that we could raise our pocket money. The books in library are old and little. So we can use the money to buy some new books for the school library so that more students can get more and latest information from books. Students in Group 3 thought we can plant some plants and flowers in the school. That may make our school more beautiful. Anyway, we have studied here for three years, we love our school. We hope our school will be better and better and we should study hard and one day our school will be proud of us.。
