June 12, Sunday
Today is Sunday. I didn’t get up early as usually. In the morning after I finished my homework, I do some washing. Then I telephoned one of my classmate and invited him to see a film.
And unfortunately, when we got to the cinema at 3:00 pm we found all the tickets had sold out. Then we went to our school and played the football. Later, we were about to go home when we saw our English teacher, Mr. Wang, came through the school gate. He told us we had made many progress in English this term. He also suggested that we read more and wrote more. We promised to him that we would follow his advice.

三、阅读理解
18. Some time ago I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a whole lot of antique(古董) shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly receptio n. I was quite wrong. The man wouldn’t even look at my chair.
The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth, so I decided that my approach must be wrong, and I should try another way.
I entered the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper,“Would you like to buy a chair?” He looked it over carefully and said,“Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir?” “Twenty pounds,” I said. "OK,” he said,“I’ll give
you twenty pounds.” “It’s got a slightly broken leg,” I said. “Yes, I saw that, it’s nothing.” Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.” I’ll buy it,” I said.“What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me,” he said.“Yes, I know but I’ve changed my mind. I am sorry. I’ll give you twenty-seven pounds for it.” “ You must be crazy,” he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.”“You’re right,” I said.“And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, “Would you mend this chair for me?”“I wouldn’t have agreed to do it,” he said.“We don’t do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. But I’ll mend this for you, shall we say for a fiver(五英镑钞票)?” He was a very
nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing.

19. For decades, it is generally believed that middle children-----those born in between older and younger siblings(兄弟姐妹)---tend to have a hard time growing up.
Within their families, middle children are said to be neglected. Their place in the birth order is seen as one of the disadvantages, since they do not receive the same attention that is given by their parents to their siblings.
Therefore, according to the long-established idea, they are likely to become shy, quiet and lacking in confidence. In this way, middle children are far more likely to become outside. And they are not so successful or happy as their brothers and sisters.
As we discovered during our research, however, the ideas do not fit the facts. Far from being thought of as failures, middle children are more likely than their siblings to be successful and enjoy strong social lives and successful careers.
The disadvantages they experienced in childhood turn out to be beneficial, in many cases giving them features of independence, creativity and ability to express themselves very clearly. Many famous people, such as the film star, Julia Roberts, are “middles.”
One of the most successful people of modern times, the Microsoft genius, Bill Gates, is also a middle. His remarkable ability to think outside the box and take proper risks are features often found in middle children.
And consider this: of all the US presidents since 1787, no fewer than 52 percent were middle children. This is not only a far higher proportion(比例)than the numbers in the overall population, but it also changes the traditional belief that the eldest sons always have the strongest personalities and therefore are natural-born leaders.
46. The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to _________.
A. give some ways to solve a problem
B. show the reasons why something happens
C. report on the finding of a study
D. give some suggestions to people
47. According to long-established ideas, middle children ________.
A. tend to be lacking in confidence
B. get the most attention from the family
C. often like to play with others
D. usually do well in their studies
48. The percentage given in the last paragraph mainly shows that ________.
A. education is important in a president’s family life
B. the parents of presidents were able to keep good order
C. the eldest sons are natural-born leaders
D. middle children seem to have a stronger personality
