1、Objectives
This course will discuss the definition of sustainability and the theoretical factors that doom human society to misery (Malthusian demographics, finite resources, disease, poverty) and how (and if) they were overcome. This course will also give you a outlook of the main present challenges to global sustainable development in more detail, including the energy, food, water, population and disease issues
2.Basic Requirements
(1) Main Contents
The main contents include: classical trade theory, neo-classical trade theory, Intra-industry trade theory the new-new trade theory, tariff and non-tariff barriers, international factor mobility, regional integration, free trade and protectionism, and so on.
(2)Teaching Method
This course teaches the theory and case studies taken combined. Teaching content of each chapter to take into account the combination of both social realities and trends, and also have the focus, combined with cutting-edge issues of sustainable development.
(3) Assessment:Examination
The course assessment will combine attendance, group work and final paper. Among them, final paper: 50%; group work: 40%; attendance: 10%.
(4) Learning Requirements
Before learn this course, Students should grasp the knowledge of international economics as a basis. In order to achieve the purpose of teaching applied courses, this course will organize lectures and panel discussions; theory of learning requires the ability to memorize the history of the development of international trade theory and the important theoretical content, group discussion topics for the exchange of international trade-related issues.

The definition of sustainable development.
Chapter2 A brief history of human population and income, 1800-present
(1)Learning Objectives
This chapter show students the different population growth pattern between
pre-industrialization time and after-industrialization time.
(2)Key points
Population growing very slowly before industrialization, referred as Malthusian trap and growing way faster after industrialization, especially after 20th century.
(3)Basic Requirements
The basic fact of population growth pattern transition.
(4)Difficult parts
Malthusian trap.
Chapter3 Modern growth, investment and technological progress
(1)Learning Objectives
The relationship between economic growth, investment and induced technology change.
(2)Key points
Investment is a main factor drive economic growth. And because investment is directly caused by the saving, so saving is important for economic growth.
Improvements in production technologies (and other intangible influences on resource productivity)
The implication of economic growth, especially the implications for international trade flows and national economic well-being or welfare
(3) Basic Requirements
The student will have to combine the theoretical knowledge with real economy. Group discussion will be launched basis on specific country’s growth.

(1)Learning Objectives
Two way relationship between health and economic development.
(2)Key points
Health matter human capital and thus economic development.
Economic growth will enhance the life-expectancy.

Understand the two way relationship between health and economic development.
Chapter 5 The persistence of poverty
(1)Learning Objectives
Economic convergence is fundamental characteristic of globalization. However, some country leave further behind.
(2) Basic Requirements
Understand what is poverty trap.
Chapter 6 Exhaustible resources and overshooting
(1)Learning Objectives
This chapter is about the current situations of exhaustible resources. The price of those has dramatically increased since this century.
(2)Key points
Overshooting of exhaustible resources.
(3) Basic Requirements
Understand how to manage exhaustible resources.
(4)Difficult parts
Public good, Privatization.
Chapter 7 Global ecosystems and natural resources
(1)Learning Objectives
The basic need of human being is provided by ecosystem rather than manmade production, such as fresh air, water, food. The whole global ecosystem is in danger.
(2)Key points
Current situation for global ecosystem and nature resources.
Chapter 8 T he global food system and water crisis
(1)Learning Objectives
This chapter will analyze global food system and water crisis that happened recently.
(2)Key points
The reason of surge of food price and current situation for water crisis.
