Although bacteria are among the simplest autonomous forms of life, they show a remarkable ability to sense their environment. They are attracted to materials they need and get
away from harmful substances(物质). Most types of bacteria swim very erratically(不规则的); short smooth runs in relatively straight lines are followed by brief tumbles(混乱),
after which the bacteria shoot off in random directions. This leaves researchers with the question of how such bacteria find their way to an attractant(引诱剂) such as food or light, if their swimming pattern consists only of smooth runs and tumbles, the latter resulting in random changes in direction.
One clue comes from the observation that when a chemical attractant is added to such bacteria, the bacteria swim along a grade of the attractant, from an area where the concentration(浓度) of the attractant is weaker to an area where it is stronger. As they do so, their swimming is characterized by a decrease in tumbling and an increase in straight runs over relatively longer distances. As the bacteria come across increasing concentrations of the attractant, their tendency to tumble decreases, while bumbling increases whenever they move away from the attractant, The net effect is that runs in the direction of higher concentrations of the attractant become longer and straighter as a result of the decrease of tumbling, while runs away from it are shortened by an increased tendency of the bacteria to tumble and change direction.
Biologists have suggested two ways that bacteria might use in detecting changes in the concentration of a chemical attractant. First, a bacterium might compare the concentration of a chemical at the front and back of its cell body. If the concentration is higher at the front of the cell, then it knows it is moving up the concentration grade, from
an area where the concentration is lower to an area where it is higher. Alternatively, it might measure the concentration at one
instant and again after a brief stop, in which case the bacterium must remember the initial concentration. Researchers reasoned that if bacteria do compare concentrations at different times, then when suddenly exposed to a uniformly(同伴) high concentration of an attractant, the cells would behave as if they were swimming up a concentration grade, with long, smooth runs and relatively few tumbles. If, on the other hand, bacteria detect a chemical grade by measuring it at two distinct points, front and back, on the cell body, they would not respond to the jump in concentration because the concentration of the attractant in front and back of the cells, though high, would be uniform. Experimental evidence suggests that bacteria compare concentrations at different times.
59. According to the passage, bacteria tumble more often when they____.
A. head to food or light
B. head away from other bacteria
C. head to the initial concentration
D. head away from the attractant
60. The passage provides information in support of the statement that_____.
A. the seeming erratic swim can in fact reflect the way bacteria control their movements
B. some bacteria may have a stronger reaction to the concentration of an attractant than other types
C. bacteria do not normally have a memory of a measurement of the concentration of an attractant
D. bacteria appear to have less control over their movement than biologists previously expected
61. The passage shows that a bacterium’s movement is
connected with_____.
A. the frequency of its neighboring bacteria’s tumbling
B. its detection of changes in the concentration of an attractant
C. the ways that it uses in determining the appearance of an attractant
D. the kinds of chemical attractants present in different concentration grades
C
I wasn’t around to witness my dad’s rapid decline between 2005.
I heard the stories by the time it was too late to do anything about them, but my conscience(良心)troubled me, and I finally went back home to visit him for lunch.
It was the first time I’d seen him in two years. He was unable to do anything but drink, and I felt like I was meeting a ghost.
I was really uncomfortable during the short walk to the Chinese restaurant we’d decided to eat in. My dad could barely walk or talk. It seemed that he was under the influence of a terrible mix of both medication and a lot of alcohol. But nothing could have prepared me for the next wave of emotions. Walking into the restaurant, I saw a reaction I didn’t expect from the others: they looked on us with great fear. My hear sank. My pride fled, and I felt nothing but embarrassment. I didn’t even want to call him Dad. My dad had completely vanished. In his place was somebody who had no idea what day it was, and it broke my heart.
Without ordering anything, I told my dad I was leaving and that I wanted to go home. The worst thing was that he never asked me why. As we walked up the road where I was about to
leave, I pleaded(再三恳求)with him to remember who he used to be. But his eyes glazed over. He wasn’t listening. I ran off and cried my eyes out in private
Then, after a few failed attempts, he agreed to move into a rehab centre(康复中心).
The h ardest thing I’ve noticed for anybody who’s hurt a lot of people is that even when they accept that they’ve done wrong, they still can’t understand why haven’t forgiven them yet.
It just felt to me like he was getting away with it and that if I just sudden ly forgave him, I’d be the fool. It made me angry. I envied anyone with stability in their home life and there was the shore of letting the outside world know that our father had a problem. You felt he had failed you, or the others might look down on you because of what he was.
That feeling hasn’t gone away, but it isn’t that bad now . As each Christmas visit passed, I started seeing hope. Gone was the skinny, hard-working man I once knew, but there was in his please a happy, pot-bellied man who still loved me more anyone else in the world.
Every time I see my father, I know it may be the last time. Because I can’t see inside his body, and the damage that’s been done to it. The harm that the doctors have told me is irreparable(无法恢复的). Even though the future might look bright on paper these will always he that fear of relapse(退步)or worse in both of us—most of all him.
It’s a strange feeling to learn to love a parent again—somebody you thought was beyond help, someone you felt let you down so badly that you cou ldn’t call him for help in times of real need and someone who had make you feel so alone that
you couldn’t ever imagine having a relationship with him again.
But at the same time life is really short. So, I’m going to make su re that he’s rewarded for the hard work he’s done by making sure there
are never any more regrets between us because more darkness cannot drive away the darkness—only love can do that.
62. The author left the restaurant without eating anything because_______.
A. her father suddenly ran out
B. she was ashamed of her father
C. her rather was too drunk to order
D. she didn’t want her father to scare others
63. Why did the author refuse to forgive her father after he admitted he had been wrong?
A. Because she f elt forgiveness wouldn’t clos e the wound in her heart.
B. Because she thought her father would never understand her feelings.
C. Because she thought her father was just trying to escape punishment
D. Because she felt it would be foolish to believe what an alcoholic said.
64. Since the author’s father lived in the rehab centre,_____.
A. he has lost a lot of weight and looks in high spirits
B. his health has improved and he will recover soon
C. the author has been worrying that history may repeat itself
D. the author has managed to love her father again in one month。
