When I looked at the grade on my math paper my jaw (下巴) almost dropped to the ground: a big “65〞 in bright red ink. I had never received such a terrible grade before.
I was so ashamed that when I got home that afternoon I lied to my dad.
I tol d him I got 85 and that the report wouldn’t come until the end of the month. Dad smiled. His daughter would never lie about her grade, so he didn’t doubt the unusual delay (延迟) of my report.
A month later, Dad casually (随意地) asked me again about the report at the dinner table. He looked right into my eyes and asked for an answer. Having no choice, I told him that I had in fact got just 65 in my math final. I had lied because I didn’t want to let him down.
For a moment, he just looked at me. I would have preferred a telling off than that silence. Finally, Dad said, in a hurt voice, “You have already let me down, with your lie. I am not disappointed at your math score. That is no big deal – no one can be perfect all the time. But I am very
disappointed in you. If you can’t be honest with your dad, who can you be honest with? It’s much easier to achieve a better grade than rebuild someone else’s trust in you.〞
Dad’s words touched my heart. I couldn’t forgive (原谅) myself for having hurt his feelings. I took out the report that I had been hiding for weeks, handed to him and apologized, sincerely. I realized that my honesty is not only important to me personally, but to those around me that truly care about my well-being (幸福).
In one of Shakespeare’s plays a character says: “No legacy (遗产) is so rich as honesty.〞 After the crisis between Dad and me, I began to understand those words.

There’s a line in Shakespeare’s Hamlet that sums up (总结) US teenager Samuel Vega’s story beautifully: “We know what we are, but know not what we may be.〞
When Vega was a sophomore (高中二年级学生) at Chicago’s Roberto Clemente High School, he was in top classes getting D grades.
Though he had always been a strong reader, he hated reading.
Words didn’t jump off the page. Instead, they lay t here silent and lifeless. They didn’t speak to him.
Vega was at school the day his English teacher invited students to audition (试镜) for the Chicago Shakespeare Theater program. Vega decided to audition for a part and was amazed when he won the lead role.
“I was surprised by what I’d gotten myself into,〞 said Vega, who played Hamlet. “Professional actors [and a director] were training us.〞
During rehearsals (排练), the actors sat in a square and practiced their lines. Vega said that for the first time, the words –even those written in the 16th century – began to come alive for him.
“I wanted to know what the words meant,〞Vega said. “Shakespeare used all these big and difficult words and phrases to create characters, and you had to know what he meant – and own it – in order to understand how to play the character.〞 Though Vega had never acted before, the professional actors were impressed by the teenager’s natural talent.
Soon, Vega started bringing a dictionary to rehearsals to help him understand his lines. He started carrying the dictionary wherever he went.
Whether he was reading for history class or social studies, he used the same skills he had learned from reading Shakespeare. He said he tried to get into the heads of the people he was reading about, and he imagined himself as them.

Scientists have found that human eyes are more likely to be damaged by UV rays (紫外线) while skiing in snow-covered areas than sitting on the beach, according to a report by the UK newspaper the Telegraph.
Researchers at Kanazawa Medical University, Japan and American company Johnson & Johnson conducted the study together. They looked at the effects of light reflection on newly fallen snow on a ski trail (滑道) in Ishikawa Prefecture, northern Japan. They compared the results with the levels of UV rays on a sand beach in southern Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture.
They found that on the beach, eyes are exposed to a daily 260 kilojoules (千焦耳) of UV a square meter compared to 658 kilojoules in snow-covered areas.
The findings are supported by the Japan Meteorological Agency (日本气象厅). According to the agency, the reflection ratio (比率) of UV light on beaches is often between 10 and 25 percent, compared to 80 percent in new snow areas. The amount of light increased 4 percent with a 300-meter rise in height.
UV rays harm the eyes
Most of us know that UV rays can harm the skin. That’s why we wear sunscreen (防晒霜) before we go out in the sun. But many of us may not realize that UV rays are also harmful to the eyes.
If your eyes are exposed to large amounts of UV radiation (放射) over a short period of time, you may experience photokeratitis. Like a “sunburn of the eye〞, photokeratitis is painful. Your eyes will become red and feel strange feeling. They may be sensitive to light. Fortunately, this is usually temporary (暂时的) and seldom causes permanent (永久的) damage to the eyes.
Long-term exposure to UV radiation, however, can be more serious. Scientific studies and research have shown that exposure to small amounts of UV radiation over a period of many years increases the chance of eye damage, which could lead to total blindness.
It is never too late to begin protecting the eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. The following tips from the American Optometric Association (美国验光协会) can help prevent further eye damage:
*Wear sunglasses any time your eyes are exposed to UV light, even on cloudy days and during winter months.
*Choose gray-colored glasses. They reduce light without changing the color of objects.
*Wearing a hat with a rim (帽沿) can also provide protection.
8. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?
A. Most people know that UV rays harm the eyes as well as the skin.
B. Short-time exposure of the eyes to UV rays doesn’t harm them
C. Too much eye exposure to UV rays may cause total blindness.
D. You don’t have to protect your eyes from UV rays on cloudy days.
9. According to the article, what do we know about the UV rays?
A. The reflection ratio of UV rays changes a lot in Japan.
B. The higher you stand, the more you will be exposed to UV rays.
C. The level of UV rays is high during winter months.
D. Sensitivity to light and tearing are common effects of daily UV rays exposure.
10. You would most likely find the article in ______.
A. a doctor’s diary
B. a travel journal
C. a medical magazine
D. a physics textbook

At the center of New Zealand can be found its artistic community. Lying at the top northwest corner of South Island is the town of Nelson, New Zealand’s centre for arts and crafts (工艺).
Named after England’s famous Admiral Horatio Nelson by the first English settlers, the city today is a paradise (天堂) for lovers of coffee and fine arts with its numerous galleries and street cafes. The city has nurtured (培养) its artists and today has a cosmopolitan (国际化的) arts community among its 50,000 residents.
Artists are attracted by Nelson’s Victorian architecture and luminous (明亮的) light. Nelson gets over 2,500 sunshine hours per year, making it the country’s su nniest city. To: All Staff
From: Jakie Mok, Secretary; Sports Development Committee
Date: May 20, 2010
A week ago, “Sports for Life〞 programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones.
Sports 1: Basketball
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
Sports 2: Gym
We will be using St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.
Sports 3: Hiking
Hiking (远足)will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr.
Sports 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i.e. 2:45pm to 3:45pm). Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The
pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.
15. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Students selecting basketball had better register early.
B. Students participating in gym should arrive at 6:00 pm.
C. Hiking usually begins at 2:30 pm and lasts 2 hours.

D. students taking up the four sports should bring bottles of water
17. It can be concluded that ______.
A. each sport will take only on hour
B. students will be charged for the four sports

It wouldn’t be terribly comfortable for you to sleep standing up, but the opposite is true for horses. 1
Horses have bones and ligaments (韧带) in their legs that can lock together in a special way. That allows the animal to be completely relaxed while standing.
2 In fact, it is preferable to lying down. Horses are heavy animals with big muscles (肌肉), but their bones are surprisingly delicate (脆弱的).
3
Horses do, however, sometimes take short naps while lying on the ground in an area where they feel safe.
How did this happen? 4 Horses probably developed their habit of sleeping upright as a defense against enemies.
Their speed is their main defense in the wild, and it takes horses longer than most animals to pull themselves upright. A standing position keeps a horse constantly ready to race away if danger comes near.
Horses’ ability to stand in that special way is called the “stay apparatus〞. 5 Horses can stand for a very long time – a few years –without getting tired.
A. Because they don’t have to use any energy, sleeping while upright is no problem for a horse.
B. If an enemy were to come while a horse was on the ground, they might not be able to get up fast enough to get away.
C. That’s because of the way their bodies are built.
D. Lying in one position for too long could injure a horse.
E. They use it even while they are awake to avoid getting tired.
F. Scientists say it evolved (进化) over time.
