In the United States, the word "holiday" is synonymous with celebration. The following four holidays per year are proclaimed by the federal government.
Independence Day
Independence Day is annually celebrated on July 4 and is often known as "the Fourth of July". It is the anniversary of the publication of the declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1776. Now it is celebrated in all the states. The army marks the occasion by firing a 13-gun salute every year. Ceremonies may include parades, official speeches, visits to historic monuments and fireworks displays.
Memorial Day
This holiday, on the fourth Monday of every May, is a day on which Americans honor the dead. Originally a day on which flags and flowers were placed on graves of soldiers who died in the American Civil War, now it has become a day on which the dead of all wars and all other dead are remembered the same way.
Veterans Day
Veterans Day was established to honor Americans who had served in World War Ⅰ. It falls on November 11, the day when that war ended in 1918, but it now honors veterans of all wars in which the United States has fought. Veterans' organizations hold parades or other special ceremonies, and the US president customarily places a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National.
Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. It has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. Today, people celebrate Thanksgiving to remember these early days. The most important part of the celebration is a traditional dinner. Thanksgiving dinner almost always includes some of the foods served at the first feast: roast turkey, cranberry sauce potatoes pumpkin pies. Manta rays(魔鬼鱼)are some of the creatures in the ocean who allow divers to swim right up to and interact (互动)with them.Unfortunately, these gentle animals are in big trouble.Since 2011,manta rays have been listed as a threatened species worldwide.
Peru,a country in South America, recently took a big step to protect giant manta rays :It banned fishing for them.Although 12 other countries have passed laws to protect rays,Peru's may be the most important one yet. That's because there are more manta rays in the Pacific Ocean near Peru than in any other place in the world.
Giant manta rays are unusual-looking creatures. The giant, flat rays are typically about 4.5 meters wide and can grow up to 8 meters wide\ "They're" sort of like giant flying carpets underwater, says Joshua Stewart of the Manta Trust,an organization that researches manta rays.
People catch rays for their meal.Overfishing is bad for any sea creature, but it's even worse for manta rays.Female manta rays usually have only one baby every two to five years. So every ray that's caught hurts the population in a big way.People who break Peru's new law can be fined or have their fishing licenses taken away.Even rays caught accidentally in fishing nets must be set free.
Earlier this year, the Manta Trust attached video cameras, called Crittercams,to manta rays off the west coast of Mexico. The footage (连续镜头)the cameras collect could help researchers predict where rays swim and when. The scientists could use the information to warn fishing boats to avoid these areas, helping reduce the number of accidentally caught rays.
Stewart says ifs important to protect these unique creatures. " There's really no other animal that compares in size and that you can have interactions with in the wild."
8. What's a characteristic of manta rays?______
A. They can fly like a bird.
B. They are usually of small size.
C. They are very friendly to people.
D. They like swimming up and down.
9. What's the current situation of manta rays?______
A. They haven't their own home.
B. They only live in the Pacific Ocean.
C. Their number has dropped greatly.
D. Almost no female rays give birth.
10. Except for doing research on manta rays, the Manta Trust is also trying to ______ .
A. protect them
B. look for more rays
C. make films about them
D. reduce their population
11. How does Stewart feel about Peru's new law?______
A. It makes no sense.
B. It is hard to follow.
C. It needs improvement.
D. It is really essential.

Added sugar exists in nearly 70 percent of packaged (袋装的)foods and is found in bread, snacks, and most breakfast foods. The average American eats about 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day (not counting the sugar that exists naturally in foods like fruit) .That's about double the suggested-limit for men (nine teaspoons)and three times as much as the limit for women (six teaspoons).
A number of health organizations agree that cutting back on added sugar is a good idea. They believe that added sugar is a main cause of obesity, but normal-weight people can experience the same health problems connected with too much sugar.A 15-year study found that eating high amounts of added sugar doubles the risk of heart disease, even for people who aren't overweight.
Added sugar has also been connected with an increased risk for diabetes and even Alzheimer s disease. And increasingly, the scientific community is realizing the worrying nature of added sugar.Brain scan studies show that fructose (a form of sugar found in fruits)put in packaged foods influences the dopamine system,a messenger center in the brain that controls how we experience pleasure.Eating lots of fructose in packaged foods can create changes in the brain similar to those found in alcohol (酒精)addicts.
The fructose found in packaged foods is taken from com and sugar cane, and much or all of the fiber (纤维)has been taken away.Without the fiber to slow it down, your body gets a big amount of fructose that can cause health problems. However, not to worry :When you eat a strawberry or other fruit, you are eating fructose in its natural state, and it comes with a lot of fiber, which slows the speed at which sugar enters your blood.Your body can deal with fructose well when it's eaten as fruit.
12. What do we know about Americans from paragraph 1 ?______
A. They eat too much added sugar.
B. They are eating more packaged foods.
C. They prefer added sugar to natural sugar.
D. They are adding more sugar to their foods.
13. What did the brain scan studies find out about added sugar?______
A. It may cause heart disease.
B. It can influence how the brain works.
C. It may be connected with Alzheimer's disease.
D. It can lead to people being unable to stop taking it.
14. What does the author think of eating fructose in fruits?______
A. It is all right.
B. It is harmful.
C. It makes the blood run slowly.
D. It can cause health problems.
15. What does the text mainly discuss?______
A. Why fructose works best with fiber.
B. How fructose does Americans good.
C. How added sugar can influence your health.
D. Why added sugar can be found in so many kinds of foods.
