Question 1-2
W: George! It's so lovely to see you again! It's been ages since we last met.
M: Oh, I suppose it is. But weren't you at Michaefs when he had his twenty-first birthday party last August?
W: No, I wasn't. I got the flu at the last minute. I think the last time I saw you was three years ago in December, when we all had dinner together in that Indian restaurant...
M: No, surely we've met since then...wait a minute...it was at Peter's place, when he
and Jenny got married in March.
W: Yes, of course it was! Questions:
1.Why did the man go to Michael's?
2.When did the speakers meet last time?
Question3-4
W: Hi Paul. I'm so sorry, but I can't pick you up from work this afternoon. I've just learned that I'm working outside the city today and I'll get back just in time to pick up Toby from his after-school club before they close at 5:00.
M: OK. T m not very happy to hear that, but never mind. I'll take a taxi again.
W: Wait. Wait. Don't get upset. After I pick up Toby, Fll drive him straight to his guitar lesson. The music school is on the same subway line as your office, just two stops away. So you could take the subway and meet me in the cafe opposite the music school. We'll wait for Toby there and then I'll drive us all home together.
M: Darling, thafs a great idea. I'll be there. It's not too far so I'll walk. Questions:
3.What will the woman do after work?
4.How will the man get home?
Question5-6
W: Hi, Bill. Tm having trouble deciding which class to take this term. Last term, I had a really horrible teacher for art history-Ms. Taylor.
M: If you like art history, why don't you do art? Mr. Harris teaches that, and he's really easy-going.
W: Yeah, but I'm hopeless at drawing and painting I like looking at it more than actually doing it...Maybe a foreign language? Fve always wanted to learn French.
M: Well, there's a new teacher fbr French this term 一Mrs. Brown. I can't tell you what she's like, but she looks okay.
W: I don't really want to risk it...
M: How about Miss Williams? I've had her fbr geography before, and she's really interesting.
W: But her class is already full. I guess that really just leaves German. Doesn't Mr. Smith teach that? He seems friendly enough.
M: Yeah, but he only teaches the advanced classes. If you wanted to do level one German, you'd end up with Mr. Jones, and he's very strict.
W: Oh. dear. I guess I'll do the same class as last year. At least, the subject's OK. Questions:
5.Who teaches art?
6.What class will the woman take?

Transportation and communication networks bring people together. Yet sometimes people themselves create barriers (障碍)to transportation and communication. In some countries, laws stop people from moving freely from place to place. Over the centuries, many groups of people have been denied the freedom to travel because of their race, religion, or nationality. In the Middle Ages, for example, Jews were often forbidden to move about freely within certain cities. South Africa's government used to require black Africans to carry passes when they travel within the country. Some governments require
all citizens to carry identification papers and to report to government officials when they move.
Countries set up customs posts at their borders. Foreign travellers must go through a customs inspection before they are allowed to travel in the country. Usually travelers have to carry special papers such as passports and visas (签证).Some countries even limit the number of visitors to their country each year. Others allow tourists to visit only certain areas of the country, or they may require that travellers be with an official guide at all times during their stay.
Many of those barriers to travel also act as barriers to communication. When two governments have conflicts with each other on important matters, they usually do not
want their citizens to exchange news or ideas freely. Countries often try to keep military
or industrial information secret.
Today, people have the ability to travel, to communicate, and to transport goods
more quickly and easily than ever before. Natural barriers that were difficult or dangerous to cross a hundred years ago can now be crossed easily. The barriers that people themselves make are not so easy to overcome. But in spite of all the different
kinds of barriers, people continue to enjoy travel and the exchange of goods and ideas.
18.The examples in Paragraph 1 are used to tell the readers that _________ .
A.transportation and communication networks bring people together
B.it's important to prevent people from transporting and communicating
C.people made it difficult for themselves to transport and communicate
D.natural barriers mainly influenced transportation and communication
19.How is Paragraph 2 mainly organized?
A.By listing several facts.
B. By listing several figures.
C. By following the order of time.
D. By following the order of importance.
20.Which of the following may lead to people's less communication between countries?
A.People today have the ability to travel without any of the barriers.
B.The governments can't reach agreement each other on big issues.
C.Citizens of some countries aren't good at exchanging news or ideas.
D.Countries require their citizens to keep all the information secret.
21.We may learn from the passage that ________ .
A.people cannot remove the obstacles made by nature and themselves
B.man-made barriers are sometimes harder to overcome than natural ones
C.with so many barriers, people can't travel and exchange goods and ideas
D.natural barriers have always been difficult and dangerous to cross for us
D
Learning a second language is tricky at any age. Now, in a new study, scientists have worked out the exact age at which your chances of reaching fluency in a second language seem to drop: 10.
The study, published in the journal Cognition, found that it's nearly impossible for language learners to reach native-level fluency if they start learning a second tongue
after age 10. But that*s not because language skills start to go downhill. n It turns out
you're still learning fast, "says study co-author Joshua Hartshorne, an assistant professor
of psychology at Boston College. ' It's just that you run out of time, because your ability
to learn starts dropping at around 17 or 18 years old. People who start a few years after age 10 may still become quite good at a language/ the authors say, H but they are
unlikely to become fluent/
Kids may be better than adults at learning new languages for many reasons. Children's brains are more plastic than those of adults, meaning they're better able to adapt and respond to new information. H A11 learning involves the brain changing/ Hartshorne says, "and children's brains seem to be a lot more skillful at changing. " Kids may also be more willing to try new things and to potentially look foolish in the process than adults are. Their comparatively new grasp on their native tongue may also be advantageous. Unlike adults, who tend to obey the rules and patterns of their first language, kids may be able to approach a new one with a blank page.
These findings might seem discouraging, but it was heartening for scientists to
learn that the critical(关键的)period for fluent language acquisition might be longer than previously thought. Some scientists believed that the window began to close
shortly after birth, while others extended it to early adolescence. Compared with those estimates (评估),age 17 or 18 —— when language-learning ability starts to drop off—
may seem relatively old.
22.What is the best period to learn a second language?
A. Before ten.
B. Early adolescence.
C. Age fifteen.
D. Age seventeen or eighteen.
23.When it comes to new things, what does the writer think of kids compared with adults?
A. They're less skillful.
B. They're less interested.
C. They f re more flexible.
D. They're more stubborn.
24.What does the underlined word "window" in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Interest.
B. Chance.
C. Confidence.
D. Motivation.
25.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.It's Never Too late to Learn a Second Language.
B.It Takes Time to Be Good at a Second Language.
C.Do We Really Need to Learn Foreign Languages?
D.Why Kids Learn Languages More Easily than Adults.

How Spies Are Trained
—26—A navy, army or air-force officer who has a gift for language, and at the same time is thoroughly trained in the technical side of his work may be considered for active employment. A businessman who travels a great deal may be considered for active employment. After his background has been thoroughly investigated, a man living abroad may be useful as a spy.

—30—So it is just understandable that spy schools are not open to everyone. Above all, still another quality is required, He must be a man of moral soundness. Yet he must be prepared to lower himself to the meanest crime in order to complete his Assignment successfully.
A.A soldier fights supported by his comrades.
B.He must become an expert in unarmed fight.
