Mawangdui Han Tombs
Welcome to Mawangdui Han Tombs, one of the most important archaeological discoveries in China. Located in the eastern suburbs of Changsha, the tombs date back to the Western Han Dynasty, over 2,000 years ago.
The tombs were discovered in 1972 by archaeologists from the Hunan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. They contain the remains of three people: Lady Dai, the wife of a Han Dynasty nobleman; her son; and an unknown male. The tombs also contain thousands of artifacts, including silk clothing, lacquerware, bamboo and wooden objects, and more.
The most famous of the tombs is Tomb 1, which belonged to Lady Dai. Her body was incredibly well-preserved, thanks to the unique preservation techniques used in the burial. The tomb also contained a wealth of artifacts, including the famous silk banner, which depicts a mystical world of gods and goddesses.
The discovery of the Mawangdui Han Tombs provided valuable insights into the Han Dynasty, including their beliefs about the afterlife, their burial customs, and their daily lives. It is also considered one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.
Today, the Mawangdui Han Tombs are a popular tourist attraction, and visitors can see the actual tombs and artifacts on display in the Hunan Provincial Museum. We hope you enjoy your visit and gain a greater appreciation for the history and culture of Changsha.。
