Doctors in hospital emergency rooms (急诊室) often see accidental poisonings (中毒). A frightened parent arrives with a child who swallowed a cleaning liquid. Or perhaps the harmful
substance is a medicine. Or it might be a product meant to kill insects. These are common causes of accidental poisoning.
In cases like this, seek medical help as soon as possible. Save the container of whatever caused the poisoning. And look on the container for information about anything that stops the effects of the poison. Save anything expelled from the mouth of the victim. That way, doctors can examine it.
Millions of people know how to give abdominal thrusts (腹部按压) to save a person choking on something trapped in the throat. The American Red Cross says a rescuer should first hit the person on the back five times between the shoulder bones. If the airway is still blocked, the Red Cross suggests pushing hard five times along the victim’s abdomen. You can do these abdominal thrusts by getting directly behind a sitting or standing person.
The Mayo Clinic health centers suggest several steps if bleeding (出血) is severe. First, if possible, remove dirt from the wound and press
on it with a clean cloth or piece of clothing. In the past, people were advised to stop severe bleeding with a tourniquet (止血带). But experts now say tourniquets are dangerous because they can crush (挤压) major arteries and nerves. If a wound seems infected, let the victim rest. Physical activity can spread the infection. Treat the wound with a mixture of salt and water until medical help arrives.
To learn more about first aid, ask a hospital or organization like a Red Cross or Red Crescent Society for information. Training may be offered in your area.
If you know first aid methods, you can be calmer and more helpful in case of emergency.

It was my first day in college. As I entered the chemistry class,
I saw everyone seated. Apparently, I was late. I started looking for
a bench when suddenly someone said, “Here. Come and sit.”
That’s how I met Rachel.
We started sitting together for lectures, lunch and would partner with each other for the projects and even discussed our lives. It was a perfect friendship. There was no trace of jealousy when she publicly talked to other girls or when I did. We understood each other perfectly and had complete freedom for each other. Time moved swiftly.
During my final year, I was not able to attend most lectures as I started preparing for MBA. Rachel would ensure that I got all the important updates (最新的信息) about classes, experiments and projects. She would call me up twice a week to tell me about college.
I would never forget the day when I was at college to get my BSc mark sheets, how proudly she told everyone of my selection.
I was amazed to see how beautifully she celebrated my happiness.
On the eighteenth, June, just one day before her twenty-third birthday, while I was playing video games with my brothers, the phone rang.
It was Rachel. I picked up. The voice on the other end was not hers. It was her brother. He said that Rachel was no more —No More! I simply didn’t understand. Later, I was told Rachel died in an accident.
Tears covered my face, my eyes were red and I could barely speak. I cried... I cried like hell! How could it happen? It was unbelievable.
After coming back from her funeral, the days were the darkest ones in my life so far. To date, whenever I remember, I still see her smiling at me, forever willing to help me. Sometimes when I close my eyes I feel her looking at me and smiling!
Through her, I come to know where the real connection is.
Love stays long after we are gone, as she stays with me to this day!

Girls’ behaviour at school is becoming worse due to the appeal of Wag lifestyles and reality TV shows, according to teachers.
They are giving up on studying because they want an “easy route to money” by becoming a footballer’s wife or an instant star on Britain’s Got Talent or The X Factor. Many want to become a mini-celebrity instantly and they often interrupt classes, spread rumours (谣言) and even take
cyber-bullying. As a result, teachers’ time is increasingly taken up w ith dealing with “horsing around”, use of mobile phones in lessons and bullying.
The Association of Teachers and Lecturers(ATL) surveyed 859 teachers, heads, lecturers and support staff working in state and independent schools ahead of its annual conference, which begins in Liverpool today. Nearly half said girls’ behaviour has worsened over the past two years. And one in five believe that girls’ behaviour is more challenging than that of boys.
Hank Roberts, ATL’s junior vice president, cited the influen ce of Wags –young women who obtain instant wealth by marrying sportsmen. And he thought that teaching is made more difficult by programmes such as The X Factor, which is judged by Cheryl Cole―herself the winner of a TV talent show and a former footballer’s wife.
Mr Roberts, a teacher at Copland Community School in Wembley, said that the TV shows create a “false image of success that anyone can do it and it’s just a matter of luck rather than hard work”. Other reasons given for girls’ bad behavior are bust-ups(破裂)with friends and family and problems associated with puberty (青春期). Almost half of teachers said the
most common form of bad behavior is bullying by isolating another pupil and spreading rumors.

Japanese households are being urged to go to bed one hour earlier than normal in order to help tackle climate change.
The Japanese government has launched a campaign encouraging people to go to bed and get up extra early in order to reduce household carbon dioxide emissions.
The Morning Challenge campaign, launched by the Japanese Environment Ministry, is based on the belief that swapping late night electricity for an extra hour of morning sunlight could significantly cut the nation’s carbon footprint.
A typical family can reduce its carbon dioxide footprint by 85kg a year if everyone goes to bed and gets up one hour earlier, according to the campaign.
The amount of carbon dioxide emissions potentially saved from going to bed an hour early equals 20 percent of annual emissions from household lights,“Many Japanese people waste electric power at night time, for example by watching TV until very late.”a ministry spokesperson told The Daily Telegraph.
But going to bed early and getting up early can avoid wasting electrical power which causes carbon dioxide emissions. If people change their lifestyle, we can save energy and reduce emissions. The campaign also proposes that people take advantage of an extra hour of morning sunlight by improving their lifestyles in general by running, doing yoga and eating a nutritious breakfast.
It is the latest initiative (倡议) tackling climate change by the Japanese environment ministry, which is faced with the challenge of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent from 1990 levels within the next three decades.
It was the same government department that launched the high-profile (备受关注的) Cool Biz campaign five years ago, which encourages workers to wear short-sleeved shirts and offices not to turn air conditioner lower than 28 degrees Celsius during
summer.
