Dear mom and dad,
We’re staying with Lingling’s uncle in Hunan Province, and I’m having a wonderful time here in Zhangjiajie. It’s a magic land of mountains, forests and rivers. It’s famous for the strange rocks(岩石). Some of them look like people but others look like animals.
Last night we camped by a small lake. At night, we heard a noise. It woke everyone up. We thought someone was moving about. Lingling’s uncle said it was an animal. We came out and found it was just a hungry monkey looking for food.
This morning, we climbed Mount Tianzi. From the top we hoped to see the lakes and forests. But it was cloudy. We could only see the mountain tops above the clouds. Then we walked down, along a river, past trees and other plants and back to the camp. I picked a flower from a plant, but Lingling’s uncle said it was wrong and we should protect(保护) everything here. I think he is right and I will never do that again.

Betty

These days, teenagers are influenced (影响) by the media. Many of them spend hundreds of hours on TV. That’s more time than they spend with teachers at school. However, some studies show a serious problem: Today’s teenagers lack media literacy(缺乏媒体素养). In other words, they have difficulty thinking about the information they see. One study from a middle school shows that more than 70 percent of them couldn’t tell the difference between real news and stories someone made up. Kevin John teaches a class called Media Effects. He tries to help his students learn media literacy. He gives an example that shows why media literacy is important. In the example, two news stations report a snowstorm. One is about the terrible road conditions(路况). The other is about kids playing in the snow.
“With a news story, news stations tell you what they feel are the important details (细节). These are up to the news director(主任) to decide.” said John. “A person with media literacy would know that each story is about one side at this time. There is more going on.”
Some scientists think the school is the best place to teach media literacy. Others believe everyone—from parents to reporters—should help teenagers learn the skills. As for the best time to start learning media literacy, many scientists think students should begin at the age of 12. But others think the students should learn even earlier. “Old habits die hard. It’s never too early to start learning media literacy,” John said.

(共5小题,每小题1分;计5分)
In the film Forrest Gump, there’s a famous saying: “Life is like a box of chocolate; you never know what you’re going to get.” It’s the same with blind boxes. The history of blind boxes can be back to lucky bags sold in Japan from the late
1860s. It becomes big business in China these days. The market
for blind boxes could grow to 25 billion(十亿) yuan in 2025 from
about 3 billion yuan in 2019. During the Double 11 shopping day,
Pop Mart, a popular blind box company in China, sold 55,000
Labubu dolls in just 9 seconds.
Why do people like these blind boxes? First, they have beautiful and cute looks inside the boxes. Second, they’re like miniature (微型的) cartoon characters. It’s possible to put them almost anywhere in your home. But another, perhaps more important reason is that the “surprise factor (因素)” makes them fun to buy. Sometimes, it’s a toy that you want. But sometimes, it’s not the one you want. Each of these small, closed boxes has one of many toys in it. The buyer doesn’t know what they can get until
they open the box. “The most interesting thing about blind boxes
is the gap (差距) between what you expect and what you get,”
said Wen Xi, a blind box lover from Beijing.
Some people surely get much fun from the boxes, but others
worry that children might spend too much money on these toys.
If you really want something special from a blind box, you might
not get it in the first box. So you buy another box, hoping that you’ll get the toy you want this time. Then you buy another, and another. Pretty soon, you’ve spent all your money. I think we have to be careful about it. Part of growing up is learning self-control(自控), after
