Saint Paul has four ice rink (溜冰场) locations. All hockey (冰球) rinks have boards and nets. See below for locations, hours, and updates.
Cold Weather Policy: Rinks will close if temperatures reach -25F.
Warm Weather Policy: In order to prevent extended closures due to damaged ice, rinks will close if melt water is visible on the surface.
Rink Hours & Locations:
Rink hours and conditions are subject to change without notice. Rinks will close periodically for maintenance. Appointed hockey rinks may be unavailable for open
skating during hockey practices or scheduled open hockey times. Please call the numbers listed below to confirm details.
Our maintenance crew and dedicated volunteers work hard to keep the rinks clean,
but Saint Paul snow piles up fast and freezes easily, which can quickly reduce the skateable surface area of the rink. Even if you feel you can't commit to volunteering, you are still desired to help by clearing snow while visiting the rinks. Thank you for doing

It was this very morning that Garrone let us know what he is like.
The master had not yet arrived, and three or four boys were bullying Crossi, the one with the red hair who has a dead arm and whose mother sells vegetables. They were hitting him in the face with chestnut shells. And he, alone on the end of the bench, became quite pale, begging that they leave him in peace.
All at once, Franti sprang upon a bench. Pretending that he was carrying a basket on each arm, he aped the mother of Crossi when she used to come to wait for her son at door. Many began to laugh loudly and Crossi was trembling and turning red with anger.
Suddenly Crossi seized an inkstand and threw it at the other’s head with all his strength, but Franti moved aside, and the inkstand struck the master who entered at the moment, full in the breast. All flew to their places and became silent with terror. The master, quite pale, went to his table, and said in a controlled voice:
“Who did it?”
No one replied.
The master cried out once more, raising his voice still louder, “Who is it?”
Then Garrone, moved to pity for poor Crossi, rose sharply and said resolutely, “ It was I.”
The master looked at him, looked at the confused scholars, then said in a calm voice, “It was not you.”
And after a mom ent. “The culprit shall not be punished. Let him rise!”
Crossi rose and said, weeping “They were striking me and insulting me, and I lost my head and threw it.”
“Sit down,” said the master. “Let those who provoked him rise.”
Four rose and hung their heads. “You,” said the master, “have insulted an unfortunate companion; you have struck a weak person who could not defend himself. You have committed one of the most shameful acts!”
Then he went over to Garrone and looked him straight in the eye, and said to hi m, “You are a noble soul.”
Garrone profited by the occasion to murmur some words, I know not what, in the ear of the master; and he, turning towards the four boys, said abruptly, “I forgive you.”

It happens sometimes—the forecast says it’s going to rain, but you carry the umbrella with you all day only to find that it isn’t. It’s natural for weather forecasts to make mistakes, but hopefully the launch of Fengyun 4A, China’s new weather satellite, on Dec. 12 will make things better.
Although it is 36,000 km above Earth, Fengyun 4A could be an important part of our lives.
According to Dong Yaohai, the chief designer of the satellite at the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, the satellite has four instruments, including a lightning mapping imager and a radiation imager.
The lightning mapping imager can take 500 pictures of lightning within one second. These pictures will greatly improve thunderstorm forecasts as well as the research on lightning’s frequency and e ffects. The radiation imager will be used to find out the amounts of PM 10 and PM2. 5 in the air. Both of these are harmful particles (颗粒) that can damage our health.
The satellite is also very sensitive. It is able to tell if there has been a temperature change of 0.1 C on the ground.
Since 1988, China has launched 14 satellites in the Fengyun series. Each satellite has had a different job, and each generation of satellite has been more accurate and updated data more often than the one before.
According to Qu Yan, deputy head of the academy, since 2000 all typhoons formed and developed in the Western Pacific and South China Sea have been successfully found and followed. “Forecasting of typhoons has become increasingly more accurate, and the Fengyun satellites can be credited for this,” said QU.
And the technology is shared with the world. China’s weather satellites, together with those from the US and Europe, are used by the World Meteorological Organization, which means weather data collected by the satellites is made available to more than 3,000 weather forecast outlets in more than 90 countries and regions worldwide.
8. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A. The weather forecast is unbelievable at all.
B. The weather forecast can not make any mistake.
C. Fengyun 4A is believed to make the weather forecast better.
D. Fengyun 4A has made the weather forecast more reliable.
9. What do we know about the Fengyun series from the article?
A. They have the same job and accuracy.
B. The new one is more accurate than the former ones.
C. They can hardly forecast natural disaster.
D. They often update their data.
10. What does the underlined word mean in the last but one paragraph?
A. Praised.
B. Applied.
C. Accused.
D. Scolded.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Education.
B. Health.
C. Entertainment.
D. Science.

Some bats sing just as birds and humans do. But how they learn their calls and melodies is a mystery—one that scientists will try to solve by researching the genes of more than 1,000 bat species.
The project, called Bat 1K, was announced on 14 November at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in San Diego, California. Its organizers also hope to learn more about the flying mammals’ ech olocation ability—the ability to find directions in the dark; their strong immune systems that can defend against Ebola, a deadly virus; and their relatively long lifespans.
“The genomes of all these other species, like birds and mice, are well-understood,” says an expert at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. “But we don’t know anything about bat genes yet.”
Some bats show babbling behavior including barks, chatter, screeches, whistles and trills, says Mirjam Knörnschild, a behavioral ecologist at the Free University of Berlin. Young bats learn the songs and other sounds from older male tutors. They use these sounds during courtship and mating, when they seek food and as they defend their territory against rivals.
Scientists have studied the vocal sounds of only about 50 bat species so far,
Knörnschild says, and they know much less about bats’ communication than birds’. Four species of bat have so far been found to learn vocal sounds from each other, their fathers and other adult males, just as a child gradually learns how to speak from its parents.
Genetic studies have discovered at least one gene in bats that is linked to speech and language, called FOXP2. The gene is also known to have a role in how people learn language, and in vocal learning in song-birds. Researchers working on the Bat 1K project expect to find that other genes are also involved in communication, and that many more bat species have the ability to learn songs, calls and other sounds. “It’s not a ra re trait,” Knörnschild says. “I’m becoming convinced that all bats are more or less the same in vocal learning.”
Bats’ echolocation ability has been studied for many years, partly because of its applications to sonar and radar. But scientists know very little about the vocal communication and social behaviour that drive how bats learn their songs and sounds, says Michael Yartsev, a neurobiologist at University of California, Berkeley. The study of vocal learning in bats is “nearly completely untapped”, he s ays—comparing it to the state of research into birdsong 60 years ago.
12. The project, Bat 1K is carried out mainly to ________.
A. do research on the genes of more bat species
B. research bats’ ability to find directions in the dark
C. study the way bats learn their calls and songs
D learn more secrets about bats’ longer lifespans
13. From Para 5 and 6, we can safely infer that ________.
A. scientists have studied only approximately 50 bat species so far
B. of all bats, only four species learn vocal sounds from each other
C. more than one gene linked to speech and language has been discovered
D. the gene FOXP2 has something to do with human language learning
14. Which of the following is the word“trait” in Paragraph 6 closest to in meaning?
A. quality
B. behavior
C. habit
D. gene
15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Scientists try to know more about bat genes.
B. Scientists seek keys to bats’ vocal sounds.
C. All bats are almost the same in vocal learning.
D. Bats sing just as birds and human beings do.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A Farewell Party
We learned that our class teacher, Mr. Read, was about to be transferred to another school in a week. All the pupils adored Mr. Read as he was a very good and dedicated teacher. He never shouted at us and was very patient with the slower pupils.
Our class decided to hold a farewell (告别) party for this model teacher. But we needed to have the permission of the school’s headmaster first. Judy was given the task
of writing to the headmaster for permission to hold the party as her handwriting was the
neatest and her language skills were excellent. After the letter was written, all the pupils in the class signed the letter and six pupils, myself included, went to the headmaster’s office on behalf of the whole class.
The headmaster was mildly curious when he saw the six of us in his office. We gave him the letter of request and after reading it in silence he frowned. He said that the request was very irregular but after the six of us begged him genuinely, he finally changed his mind and gave us the permission. He allowed us to hold the party during the last period of the following Friday, which would be Mr. Read’s last day of teaching in our school.
The whole class was excited after getting the permission. We gathered together after school and planned for the party. After some debate and discussion we finally agreed on the things we needed to do.
On the following Friday, after we came into the classroom, we hid the drinks, food, and the farewell gift—the “Complete Sherlock Holmes”—in a corner so that Mr. Read would not see them as we wanted to surprise him. On the last period of school, our class monitor, Aaron, approached Mr. Read just as he was about to begin the next lesson.
“Sir, we have obtained permission from the headmaster to treat you to a simple farewell party.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Immediately the pupils brought out the drinks and food.
