Getting a new PC is one thing. Keeping it running is quite another. While a personal computer should continue to perform well for years, users know that system
unsteadiness( 不稳固性 ) does exist. Yet you can reduce it to the smallest amount by
following the tips below.
First, put in as little software as possible. You’ll have fewer software -related problems and a system that is easier to manage.
Second, you should ensure that you have as much memory (RAM) in your PC as you need. If you run Windows 98, your computer should have at least 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM
or more. You can also get by with 128 MB Of RAM if you use Windows NT or Windows 2000,
but these operation systems will run much more smoothly if you have 256 MB of RAM or
more.
Third, make sure you buy good hardware. No-name products may be cheaper and
sometimes just as good as named brand products, but named-brand products usually became well- known because of their steadiness. It ’s wise to buy products from famous companies because Windows will more often support the hardware that you buy. If you are starting
out with computers, it’s also a good idea to buy ready-made systems from major manufacturers. They are likely to have been tested thoroughly with your operating system,
and you will generally experience fewer problems.
Fourth,do prepare for disaster. No matter how well your system runs when you get
it, the day will come when it will need to be replaced. Hopefully, you will replace
it because technology has become out-dated, but you may need to replace it also because the hard drive crashes or you begin experiencing problems that no one can figure out.
That ’s why it ’s important to copy your important information regularly.Whether you use a tape backup device or a CD-RW drive,it ’s important to make a regular backup
plan and stick to it.
64. If you want to use Windows 2000, but your computer only has 64 MB of RAM, what will you have to do?
A. Change its RAM for at least 256 M
B.B. Put in good software in your computer.
C. Enlarge its memory to at least 128 MB.
D. Buy another new computer to match it. 65. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A. your computer will save the important information when its hard drive crashes
B. your computer might lose all the information it stores when it crashes
C. you must not put in much software
D. you ’d better use 128 MB of RAM if you run Win dows NT
66. The best title of this passage would be _______.
A. The Tips You Must Follow
B. How to Start Out with a Computer
C. How to Use Your PC Better
D. How to Keep Your PC Steady
67. What does the underlined word“it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. system unsteadiness
B. personal computer
C. to perform well
D. getting a new PC

Crossroads International
How does Crossroads work?
Crossroads is a resource network. We take goods Hong Kong doesn’t want and give them to people who badly need them. So Crossroads is just that: a Crossroads between
need and resource.
Who do we help?
The welfare agencies(福利机构) we help do not run on large budgets. They are
grass-root groups who have seen a need and tried to meet it. They can’t get the job done without back-up, though, so our task is to help them do their task. Our warehouse is full of goods, from computers to high chairs, clothing to books, stationery to medical provision, cupboards to dining sets. They send us a list of their needs and we try to
match it with the resource we have in stock.
How do we operate?
Crossroads itself also operates on a low budget. We do not buy the goods we send. They are donated( 捐献 ). Similarly, rather than raising funds for freight(货运),we ask transport companies to donate their services. Nobody in our organization receives a
salary. Even our full-time staff work on a voluntary(自发的) basis.
Those that donate goods and services:
Factories / Manufacturers / Hospitals/ Hotels / Educational Institutions
/ Householders / Transport Companies / Offices / Other Charities
One resource that we are always in need of is people. While we receive large
quantities of goods and there is never a short supply of requests for them, we are always in need of hands to help sort and prepare them for shipping.
What can I do?
If you are volunteering regularly, we can offer work in some of the following
categories some of the time. You are welcome to number your top three choices and
we will do our best to offer them. Clothing / Sewing / Toy / Furniture handling / Book
/Driving / Household goods / Office work / Electrical goods / Book keeping / Medical
/Fund-raising
Where to find us?
All volunteer work is done at our warehouse? Located in Basement Zone M of the Kai Tak Government Building

The Value of Time
A proverb says:“ Time is money.” But in my opinion, time is even more precious
than money. Why? Because when money is spent, we can earn it back. However, when time
is gone, it will never return. This is the reason why we must value time.
It goes without saying that the time we can use is limited. Therefore, even an hour is extremely precious. We should make full use of our time to do useful things. As
students we must not relax our efforts to engage in our studies so as to serve our country
in the future.
But it is a pity that there are a lot of people who do not know the importance of
time. They spend their precious time smoking, drinking and chatting. They don’ t realize that wasting time is equal to wasting a part of their valuable life.
In a word, we should form the good habit of saving time. Do not put off what
can be done today until tomorrow.。
