Picture 6. The huge and precious diamond was gone. Maybe it was stolen.
What can you guess about the novel from the pictures? Try to tell the story.
These pictures tell readers a story. It is a detective mystery about the theft of a diamond from a shrine in India. Wilkie Collins was one of the first writers of detective novels. In 1868 he published The Moonstone. The pictures on page 109 show scenes from the novel.
Step 2: Listening about some dialogues at the party. (page 110)
1. Look at the picture and guess what people are doing in the picture.
2.Turn to page 110 and answer the two questions and then listen to the tape.
3. In the above story, the young woman was called Rachel Verinder. Some dialogues take place during her party.
4. Please pay special attention to the advice given by people.
Step 4: Speaking
1. On the day of Rachel’s birthday, one of the guests, Godfrey, asked her to marry him. Rachel refused. Act out the conversation between them. (Work in groups to discuss the situations. (page 111) Two students will be picked out to act out the scene. One acts Rachel, and the other Godfrey.)
2. After the party Rachel put the Moonstone in a cupboard, but the following morning it was missing. How do the characters in the story react? Act out the situation.

OK. I will do it.
At times we all need to give other people advice, but it is easy to upset the person we are advising. When you are giving advice in English, it is important to be careful about the language you use so that you do not offend your listener. You should avoid being too straightforward. Speaking in a roundabout way and using the passive voice is a good way to do this.。
