Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, drink and
even fight. They often do something dangerous.
Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely (可能) to make
decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong? Not really. So what’s the reason?
According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care
a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them—that is “peer influence”.
As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and also they care more about what they think of them. This makes teenagers
make decisions without thinking about the costs.
In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely.
___▲___?
As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油门) but a
weak brake (刹车). The “accelerator”is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake”is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to
end up in an accident.
But the good news is that a violent (暴力的)teenager doesn’t necessarily become a violent adult. About two-thirds to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it. “They get
more self-controlled.”
34. Why are teenagers likely to make wrong decisions according to the passage?
九年级英语(上)4—13
A. Because their friends can’t offer help.
B. Because they think teenagers have more chances
C. Because they are too young to tell right from wrong.
D. Because they care a lot about what their peers think of them.
35. According to the passage, with peers around them, teenagers are more

A.use more self-control
B.perform better than when they are alone
C.become more careful about what they do
D.care about winning without thinking about danger
36. Which of the following is the best for “______” in Paragraph 6?
A. How do teenagers often drive a car.
B. Why do teenagers always have a car accident
C. What kind of influence do peers have on teenagers.
D. Why do peers have such a big influence on teen’s acts.
37. What can we conclude(推断) from the passage?
A. Peer influence is always bad on teenagers.
B. Teenagers don’t like to use a brake while driving.
C. Most teenagers become less violent when they grow up.
D.Teenagers shouldn’t spend all the free time with their friends.

MSG (monosodium glutamate) is a food additive (食品添加剂), which has been widely
used by many food factories all over the world since it appeared first in Japan in 1909.
MSG is a substance that is added to some food to improve its original (原先的) taste
and color. It is used in foods around the world such as cakes, bread, frozen meats, fish and
vegetables. In the beginning, people thought MSG was safe just like salt and sugar. However,
in 1968 some people reported they seemed to have bad reactions (反应) to MSG after having
had a meal at a restaurant. They included headaches and quick heartbeat (心跳). It was also
reported that MSG excited a person's brain and caused his death in Japan. Scientists think
that MSG may lead to many neurological disorders (神经紊乱). In mice studies done by a
university, the evidence showed the mice d idn’t want to eat the food including MSG.
Today many food companies “hide”

When you look at a giraffe, what do you see? Some people see the characteristics of
four animals a leopard's coat, a camel's head and neck, a cow's feet, and a snake fora
tongue(舌尖). Why does the giraffe have so many different characteristics? The giraffe
needs all of its characteristics to survive (continue to live).
Giraffes are very tall and have long necks for two reasons. First, they eat from the tops
of very tall trees. Second, they need to see over the tops of the trees. They can see danger,
like a lion from far away. Then they have time to run away or hide.
The giraffe's coat is also important to its survival. It has brown spots and is very thick.
The spots help the giraffe hide among the trees. The giraffe's thick coat protects it from the
sun.
Two other important characteristics of the giraffe are its large eyes and long thick
eyelashes(眼睫毛). With its large eyes it can see very well. The eyelashes protect its eyes.
The giraffe sees better than most other large animals in Africa.
九年级英语(上)6—13
九年级英语(上)7—13
A giraffe's feet and legs are also important characteristics. The giraffe uses them for
protection. It has hard feet, like a cow. It also has very strong legs. If a lion comes too close, the giraffe can kick it on the head. That usually kills the lion.
One last characteristic is the giraffe's long black tongue. It is about 18 inches long. With their tongues, giraffes get food far above their heads. They also clean their eyes and ears with their tongues. Why is the giraffe's tongue black? The color protects it from the sun.
Maybe the giraffe looks like four animals, but of course we know that it is not. It is one animal, with many different characteristics. Its characteristics help it survive.
42. Which of the following characteristic for a giraffe to survive is not mentioned?
A. Large ears.
B. Long neck.
C. Black tongue.
D. Thick eyelashes.
43. According to the passage, which of the following is RIGHT about giraffes?
A. Giraffes are so tall that they can't hide among the trees.
B. Giraffes can use their soft feet to kill lions sometimes.
C. Giraffes always clean their necks with their black tongues.
D. Giraffes have thick coats to protect themselves from the sun.
44. The passage mainly tells us that__________.
A. giraffes, camels, leopards and cows look the same.
B. giraffes have the characteristics of many animals.
C. giraffes ’ special characteristics help them survive.
D. giraffes learn these characteristics from others.
