Shake Shack is a new kind of restaurant becoming more popular in the U S. The restaurants are not “fast food.” They are known as “fast casual.”
Observers say Americans want more choices and fresh food when choosing where and what to eat. This trend is one reason why the fast food restaurant McDonald’s has struggled financially. In the last quarter of 2014, McDonald’s net income dropped by about$300 million. The January earnings report brought more bad news. Worldwide sales dropped for the eighth month in a row and even more than expected. While McDonald’s is struggling to get their customers back, Shake Shack, is doing well in making money. The New York-based burger chain had a very successful IPO, or initial public offering, of shares at the end of January. On its first day of trading,Shake Shack went from$21 a share to just under$46 a share. Being part of the “fast casual” trend has helped Shake Shack. Other fast casual restaurants in the U.S.include Chipotle and Panera. Bonnie Riggs, a restaurant expert with NPD has studied Americans’ restaurant habits for almost 30 years. She says one reason why Americans like fast casual food is that it’s new. It is creative. it is something different and people like to try new things. Her study shows Americans made 61 billion visits to restaurants last year. Three out of four visits were to fast food restaurants, like
McDonald’s. Fast casual is still a small percentage of restaurant visits, but it has developed fast. Just as Ms. Riggs says, “It’s growing by leaps and bounds, because they me et consumers’ needs. They know it's being prepared while they wait, it’s fresh, quality food, good tasting food at what they say are reasonable and affordable prices. ”
Many Americans still like their fast food. They just are not going as often. They are finding other ways to have a meal.
21. What is the trouble with McDonald’s?
A. Its share goes down to$21.
B. Shake Shack has taken its place.
C. It’s not popular with Americans.
D. Its sales and income have dropped.

A. 1ike to try something new
B. care only about the quality
C. don’t like fast food any more

April 27 is Take Our Daughters to Work Day in Britain. Started at first in the United States and brought to Britain in 1994, Take Our Daughters to Work Day has become a special day for girls between 11 and 15. On that day thousands of girls take a day off school and go together with one of their parents to their work places. The purpose of this day is to broaden girls’ horizons and raise their self-confidence.
For many years people have thought that boys can do better than girls in society. But actually, “girls can be whatever they want to be just like boys, whether it is a pilot, a nurse or a chief executive,” says the chairman of Our Sons and Daughters Charitable Trust, an organization which supported the activity of t he Day. “Now the girls have a close look at what their parents are doing and this may help them to be more self-confident when they are faced with a choice of work.”
Schools and many companies support the activity too. Palmers Green High School for Girls, in north London, has made the Day a necessary part of career education.
Zarina Bart, 15, from Palmers Green, went with her mother to her lawyer’s office on this year’s Take Our Daughters to Work Day. She found it interesting to see her mother at wo rk. “It’s really strange seeing Mum at work —running around, getting serious and telling people what to do.” She has always liked this idea of going into law and thinks it likely that she will follow in her mother’s footsteps. Having a chance to see how h er mother works has given her more
self-confidence.
Experts believe that girls with higher self-confidence aim higher and are more likely to be successful in life. Parents have the most important effect on the confidence of teenage girls. If parents believe in their daughters and show examples both at work as well as at home for them, this will give a lot of help to girls. Take Our Daughters to Work Day is surely a step in the right direction.
25. What is the topic of this passage?
A. Raising daughters’ self-confidence.
B. Take Our Daughters to Work Day.

D. Following mothers’ footsteps.
26. It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that ________.
A. women pilots are popular in Britain
B. girls are sure about their future jobs
C. people have wrongly believed that girls can do as well as boys

27. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

Not many things in life can be more irritating: you are having a conversation with friends, but they check their phones and begin replying to texts or checking their emails. The Guardian (卫报) described the scene of a friend’s face buried in a screen as “a distinct 21st-century problem”. A new word has been created to describe this --- phubbing. It is the act of looking at your mobile phone instead of paying attention to others during a s ocial interaction. Like pointing at one’s nose, phubbing is widely considered rude behavior. People everywhere are beginning to lose patience with the phenomenon.
“Stop Phubbing” campaign group has been started in Australia and at least five others h ave sprung up in its wake as anger about the lack of manners grows. The campaign’s creator, Alex Haigh, 23, from Melbourne, said, “A group of friends and I were chatting when someone raised how annoying being ignored by people on mobiles was.” He has creat ed a website where companies can download posters to discourage phubbing.
Phubbing is just one symptom of our increasing dependence on mobile phones and the Internet, which is replacing normal social interaction. A survey found that one out of three Britons would answer the phone in a restaurant and 19% said they would while being served in a shop. The survey came after a supermarket assistant in south London refused to serve a woman until she stopped using her phone. A poll, for a Sunday paper, also found that 54 percent of people checked Facebook, Twitter or other social media every day, with 16 per cent checking more than ten times a day. An unsurprising 63 per cent of people carry their phone with them “almost all, or all of the time”, it found.
Phil Reed, a professor of psychology at Swansea University who has studied the Internet addiction disorder, said many phubbers show symptoms of addiction to their mobile phones. Time magazine once pointed out, “Phubbing has a much greater potential harm to real-life connections by making people around us feel like we care more about posts than their presence.”
In the UK, Glamour magazine even imagined how novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817) would have written about people with bad mobile phone manners: “It is a tru th universally acknowledged that a single man or woman in possession of a good mobile phone must be in want of manners.”
29. Phubbing has come about because _______.
A. distrust has already been everywhere among people
B. the friendship between people is becoming fragile
C. people are getting dependent on attraction online
D. there has been a lack of means of communication
30. Which of the statements is TRUE about the “Stop Phubbing” campaign?
A. It was first started in America and then it spread to Melbourne.
B. Companies can update posters against phubbing on the website.
C. Alex Haigh, 23, was the first one to find phubbing annoying.
D. Up till now, at least six groups have claimed to support it.
31. The supermarket assistant refused to serve the woman mainly because _______.
A. the woman buried her face in the mobile phone screen for a very long time
B. the woman ignored respect and manners by focusing only on her phone
C. the assistant lost his patience with the woman who was using her phone
D. it is rare for customers to answer the phone while being served in shops
32. In the last paragraph, the writer wants to tell readers that ______.
A. one with a mobile phone should mind his/her manners
B. Jane Austen must have worked for Glamour magazine
C. phubbing is going to be forbidden immediately in the UK
D. people with good manners must have good mobile phones
D
Chicken soup has long been a comfort food for people with cold symptoms. Whether the remedy (疗法) comes from the warmth and comfort of the soup or from actual cold-fighting ingredients(成分) in the meal, it is still up for debate.
Chicken Soup: Just the Evidence
Science_has_begun_to_support_what_mothers_have_understood_for_centuries. The heat, salt, and hydration provided by chicken soup may actually fight the cold virus. Laboratory studies have shown that ingredients of chicken soup with vegetables could kill viral cells and prevent the
growth of new ones. The soup may also provide an anti-inflammatory (消炎的) effect that helps reduce cold symptoms. Unfortunately, the benefits of chicken soup appear to be limited by how quickly the soup leaves the body. There is no indication that chicken soup would help in the prevention of colds, but its use as a remedy for symptoms is common. It is largely a safe remedy with no ill side effects, and scientific evidence points more in favor of its cold-fighting properties(特性) than against it.
The Downside of Chicken Soup
Evidence in support of chicken soup's antiviral properties is not yet solid enough to prove true, reliable medicinal effects. Although the evidence based on personal experiences and existing research seem to support a good effect of chicken soup, a clinical trial would be very difficult to perform. In addition, some people with food allergies (过敏性反应) or sensitivities to salt may experience ill side effects from chicken soup. Unbroken bones may also lead to a choking risk, particularly for children. However, the potential benefits of chicken soup seem to far outweigh the possible risks.
33. What does the underlined sentence suggest?
A. Mothers have long been helped by scientists to find remedies for colds.
B. Scientists have agreed for centuries with what mothers have understood.
C. People have tried chicken soup to help reduce cold symptoms since long ago.
D. Mothers know better how to deal with cold symptoms than scientists.
34. Which of the following is true about chicken soup?
A. It is particularly good for children.
B. It can prevent people from colds.
C. It is an amazing comfort food for people with colds.
D. It surely has medicinal effects on colds.
35. What's the author's opinion on chicken soup?
A. It is good for people with colds to have chicken soup.
B. Scientists have found solid evidence about the benefits of chicken soup.
C. Chicken soup can take the place of other medicines for colds.
D. People still argue whether chicken soup has effects on cold symptoms.
