When Hitler decided to launch his invasion (1) of Russia, he thought that nothing could stand in the way (2) of his armies. Conquest (3), it seemed, was inevitable. He had surprise on his side, catching Stalin (4) off his guard by launching (5) his attack without a declaration (6) of war. Hitler expected the campaign (7) to last only a few months. In the event, it was to drag on (8) for much longer. Like Napoleon before him, he had made a fatal mistake in failing to reckon with(9) the severity of the Russian weather. Many German soldiers were to die from (10) the cold as winter set in, bringing the German advance to a halt (11).
Hello. Welcome to your new car. I am your onboard computer-assisted driving system. It is my job to alert (1) you to any hazards (2) that may occur on the highway (3). From the moment you start up (4) the car, I'll be there to help you. When you want to relax, I can take control of (5) the steering in your place, guiding you from one lane (6) to another. If a car in front of you slows down suddenly, I'll decrease (7) your speed. If you get stuck in (8) a traffic jam, the experience will no longer be so monotonous (9). Just sit back, relax, and let me eliminate(10) the worry. When you want to convert (11) back from automatic control to manual control, that's easy. Just press the right button mounted (12) on the steering column.
What is the best way to impress a prospective (1) employer when you go for an interview (2) for a job? As I see it (3), the best thing is to demonstrate that you have done your homework (4) and know all about the firm. You should make every endeavor (5), for example, to show that you know something about the structure (6) of the company, including the different lines of business it is involved in. Be enthusiastic, let the interviewer know that you are not frightened by new challenges, but are willing to take a crack (7) at anything. Try to look at the situation from the standpoint (8) of the person offering the opportunity of employment (9). What sort of qualities is he likely to be looking for? Enthusiasm, certainly. So don't leave your application waiting until just before the deadline (10). Apply early. Another thing that can make a difference (11) is to follow up (12) your interview with a letter expressing your enthusiasm to join the company.
Is America on the decline (1)? Or do we see in America a new civilization, one that will not follow historical (2) precedent, but will continue to grow and develop? It may be that in America we see for the first time (3) a completely new civilization that does not follow the path of earlier empires. This new society is forging a fresh way of looking at the world, a new mentality (4). Its essential (5) characteristic is a refusal to be discouraged (6), a willingness to try again and again rather than just accepting one's destiny(7). It is a society based on pluralism, on the mixing of immigrants (8) from different ethnic (9) and cultural backgrounds. The resulting combination (10) of cultures gives America its unique vitality.
You see that young man swimming out at sea? He's trying to swim out to the beacon and back. He must be insane (1) to have committed (2)himself to such a thing, the current (3) is far too strong. I met him on the beach before he set out. I don't mind telling you that I was taken aback (4) when he told me what he was going to do. I am a swimmer myself, but I wouldn't attempt it. And he didn't look in good condition (5) at all. Far from it. He may have had a good constitution (6) once, but he had clearly let himself go all to pieces (7). However, it seems like he had no choice. He told me that he had gone broke (8), not a penny left, and that old Burton would only find him a vacancy (9) in his firm if he did the swim. That was another surprise. Burton seems such a mild (10) mannered man, kind to everybody. Perhaps he thought the young man would not have the courage, that he would funk (11) it. Then, again, perhaps Burton knew he was sending the young man to his death, but was too cold-blood to care. It only goes to show how deceptive (12) appearances can be.
Can you switch off (1) from the cares of life and relax? Many people today cannot. They feel instead that they are obliged (2) to be on the go (3) all the time. The pace of life seems to grow ever faster. As a result, feelings of stress (4) are common as people struggle to cope (5) with what they see as a shortage (6) of time. Such widespread (7) feelings are in part caused by the large quantity of (8) information that comes pouring in (9) on us. No longer is it possible, as it was in the past, for a handful of (10) people to master the whole range of human knowledge. Instead, any individual can only command a fraction (11) of the total knowledge available. It may be argued that it is futile (12) to even attempt to do so. We should learn to set more realistic goals for ourselves if we are to hope to escape from the tyranny of time.
Peggy Noonan uses her weekly column to reflect on (1) her week. These span (2) a range of events, from the unusual to the everyday. Casual remarks from friends find their way in, such as feeling like paper coming out of a fax(3) machine. Her morning stroll gets a mention, as do the joggers and hikers she shares it with. Her television viewing creeps in, too, and she let's her imagination (4) run free about whether Colin Powell may have seen the same film she did. Her thoughts are clearly never far from the events of September 11. She thinks she has noticed a baby boom (5) in reaction to those events, despite the lack of statistical (6) evidence. All she has to back up
(7) her belief is the evidence of her own senses. She also contends (8) that the nation's dream life has been affected, with people suffering from recurring (9) dreams centring on the disaster. She wants readers to send in (10) accounts of these to her so that she can weave (11) them together to form the basis of another article.
One of the best ways to enjoy the jungle is making a trip on the river. This is better than taking the trails(1) through the forest, as these are often blocked by undergrowth that gets tangled (2) in your feet and makes traveling difficult. If you really wish to find yourself in the heart (3) of the jungle, making use of the rivers that loop (4) their way through the forest is by far the best way to get about. You can sit back and enjoy the slap (5) of the oars (6) as the boat glides (7) through the water. Everywhere you can hear the clatter (8) of birds, hidden out of sight (9) deep in the jungle. At other times, they are clearly visible, circling in flocks (10) overhead. But birds are not the only wildlife. The whole jungle swarms (11) with a huge variety of animals, guaranteed to make your trip a spectacular(12) event that you will never forget.。
