Christmas with my family is magical. We enjoy the festivities, spend time together, give each oth er gifts and eat a lot of delicious food. And the menu always includes Mum’s home-cooked dishes, Dad’s prime rib, and Aunt Charlotte’s pies. The amazing thing is that everybody is 100% genuine and there are no negative attitudes.
After I became a vegan, I went to my mother’s house to spend the holidays with my family.
I had told my mother over the phone about my decision, but she didn’t say anything. She wanted to leave me to do the explaining. And I knew that I would be questioned. I also knew that I would need to prepare my own Christmas feast, because I wanted to show my family that I ate very well indeed. So I had a plan. I cooked some vegan food and put it in the refrigerator.
When everyone was called in to take their seats at the dinner table, I sat down and patiently waited as dishes were passed back and forth. Don’t get me wrong—I did take a serving of the two things that I could eat: the dinner bread and some olives. As everyone else’s plates were piled higher and higher, my family began to notice th at my plate was rather empty. Looks were exchanged across the table, and some of my family looked embarrassed, maybe even a bit guilty. There was a silence as my entire family waited for my response. I smiled and said, “No. Excuse me.” I went to get MY di nner plate, piled high with REAL food, and sat back down with a wide smile on my face. There was some chuckling(咯咯的笑),and my mother said, “Oh, Colleen, you had us all fooled.”

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality(好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly cannot manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their
hospitality at home!
32.The writer of this passage must be ______.
A.an American B.a Chinese
C.a professor D.a student
33.When we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______. A.warmly welcomed at the airport B.offered a ride to his home
C.treated hospitably at his home D.treated to dinner in a restaurant
34.The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ______. A.strict with time B.serious with time
C.careful with time D.willing to spend time
35.A suitable title for this passage would pr obably be “______”.
A.Friendships between Chinese B.Friendships between Americans
C.Americans’ hospitality D.Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendships

lead to unhealthy weight gain.

What's screen time? It's the amount of time you spend watching TV or DVD5, playing video games, and using the computer. The more time you spend on these sitting down activities, the less time available for active stuff, like basketball, bike riding and swimming. 40.

Dear Jack,
You have asked for my advice about how to get along with friends and it is my pleasure to give you my suggestions.
Firstly, when your friends are upset, you’d better calm them down and try to help them solve the problems. Secondly, you should be concerned about your friends rather than ignore them. Finally, when your friends disagree with you, it would be a good idea if you could communicate with them face to face, and when they help you, you should be grateful to them.
These are my personal suggestions, and I hope they will be helpful to you and I believe you will make more and more friends in the future.
Good luck!
Yours sincerely,
Mary

M: Mary! I don't believe it! We're here at the same wedding. John and I are colleagues. W: What a coincidence! I work with Lucy.
Text 2
W: Can you play tennis with me today, Bob?

W: I see. Good luck to her.
M: Thanks.

M: I'm sorry. I'll try to avoid an “F”.
Text 5
W: John, are you going straight home after school today?
M: No, I'll stay in the lab doing an experiment until six o'clock and after that,I'm going to spend a couple of hours at the library before going home.
Text 6
W: In order to reduce crimes in the city, I think we should employ more policemen.
M: I don't think so. ⑥Only education works. What are you doing here? You seem to be so happy.
W: ⑦Oh yeah, I'm stealing other people's crops.
M: ⑦How can you do that on the Internet?
W: Of course I can. You know, there is a special website here for you to grow and steal crops. It's great fun.
Text 7
W: Have you heard the city has passed a law against walking dogs in the streets?
M: ⑧Sure, it's published in the newspapers.

W: But dogs often leave a mess everywhere.

W:Would they?
M: Perhaps the best solution is to build a dog park. Then people can walk their dogs there. W: Sounds too good to be realistic. The city is already too crowed without dogs.

Text 10
W: I understand that the majority of foreigners working in Britain are au pairs. What is the attraction do you think?
M:(17) Well, it is an excellent system, you know. In exchange for a little help round the house, (18)it gives the girls not only free accommodation but a splendid environment to learn the language.
W: It may well have been that way before, but does the system work like that now? (19)It's become more of a business now, hasn't it? In many cases it merely gives the families a chance to make money from the girls, without giving the girls a chance to learn the language. M: Not at all. It is a very good way, you know, of bringing people of different nationalities together. And anyway, the girls continue to come over in the thousands.
W: Yes, (20)but don't they complain that they find it hard to meet English people, especially people of their own age?
M: (20)I'm not sure that is so. The interesting thing is that in spite of everything the girls are really quite content, there's evidence for this, you know.
W: Yes, that's all very well, but don't you think it's surprising that very few of them keep in touch after they go back home?。
