大学生西部志愿者计划事迹的英文作文My Big Brother Alex and His College Friends
My big brother Alex is the coolest! He's a student at the university in our city and last summer he got to do something really special - he went out west with a group from his school to help people in poor villages. It's called the Western Volunteer Program or WVP for short. Every year lots of university students sign up to go spend a few months out in the countryside helping families that don't have very much.
Alex's group went way out to Gansu Province which is pretty far from where we live. He said the scenery was gorgeous with huge mountains, deep valleys, and the yellowest soil he'd ever seen. But a lot of the villages were very poor with houses made of dried mud bricks and thatched roofs. Most people were farmers who grew wheat, corn and herded sheep, cows and goats on the hillsides.
Alex's group did all sorts of things to help out. First they worked on improving some houses by putting in new windows, laying brick floors instead of just dirt, and fixing up leaky roofs. Alex got really good at mixing mud and straw to make adobe bricks! He also learned basic construction skills like laying bricks,
putting in support beams, and thatching roofs with dried grass. It looked like very hard work but he said it felt good to make homes warmer and drier for the families.
Then they helped out on some farms by assisting with planting crops, building trellises for grape vines, and setting up drip irrigation systems to use water more efficiently. The farmers thought the student volunteers were hilarious citykids who didn't know one end of a plow from the other! But Alex's group worked really hard and caught on quickly about farming techniques. Alex even learned to milk cows, goats and sheep which he thought was totally disgusting at first but got used to it.
My favorite part though was when Alex's team helped renovate the village school building. They plastered over cracked walls, installed new desks, painted bright murals on the walls, and set up a simple computer lab by buying a few old laptops with funds they had raised. Alex said the kid's faces just lit up with excitement to get to use real computers for the first time. How cool is that?!
The students also organized classes to teach English, computer skills, art, music and sports. Alex is a good artist so he ran an art program for the village kids where they drew pictures with charcoal, made sculptures from clay, and learned about
famous Chinese artists. He brought me back some really nice artworks the kids had made as souvenirs. One day I'll frame them and hang them up.
At night, Alex's group would hold activities and performances for the villagers. They put on plays, sang songs, did magic shows and played games. It was a chance for the volunteers and villagers of all ages to have fun, bond with each other, and experience each other's cultures. Alex said his favorite nights were when the farmers would cook amazing outdoor feasts over open fires and the students got to try all sorts of delicious homemade dishes.
But it wasn't all just fun and games. Alex said some parts were really difficult too. A lot of the villages had hardly any medical resources at all. When a teenage girl got sick with a bad fever, Alex's team had to emergency evacuate her by vehicle over hours of bumpy dirt roads to the nearest town with a hospital. They were all scared for her life along the way.
Another time, a baby goat was having troubles being born and got stuck, which is really dangerous for both the kid and mother. Alex and his friends had to help out by grabbing the little hooves and pulling gently to ease the kid out. He said it was stressful but they managed to save both the baby and mama
goat thank goodness! The students also gave lessons on first aid, nutrition and hygiene to the villagers.
When it was time for Alex and his friends to head back to the city after their two-month stint, he said there were lots of hugs, tears and promises to stay in touch. They had become like extended family to the villagers and gained a deep appreciation for the hardships of rural life, but also the wonderful simplicity, beauty and wisdom of the country folk. The students donated their equipment like shovels and cooking gear, and raised money to install a solar panel array to give the village some electricity.
Alex said the WVP was one of the most meaningful and growth-promoting experiences of his life. He feels he made a positive impact in rural communities while learning real-world skills and life lessons beyond what you can get in a classroom. He hopes to continue volunteering to help the underprivileged however he can. Alex is truly an inspiration and role model, not just for me but everyone!
So that's the scoop on my big brother's amazing Western Volunteer Program adventure last summer. I'm super proud of him and all his friends for giving up their vacation to go help complete strangers in far-off villages. Not a lot of people would choose to do that but it just goes to show what thoughtful,
hard-working and compassionate individuals they are. I look up to Alex so much and someday I hope I can do something that exceptional too!。
