English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven huma n beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mails are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.
However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探索它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.
And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, should n’t th e plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity
of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.
59. According to the passage ________.
A. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things
B. there should be egg in an eggplant

What happens when we want to do something impossible? It may seem unlikely, but it is our true nature. It may seem silly, but it is our heart’s purpose.
Once there was a strong camel. She liked dancing very much. She wanted to be a ballet (芭蕾舞) dancer. “To make every movement a thing of beauty,” said the camel, “is my dream.”
Again and again she practiced. She repeated the five basic positions a hundred times each day. She worked for long months under the hot sun, but not once did she think of stopping.
At last the camel said, “Now, I am a dancer.” She gave a performance and danced
before an invited group of friends. She did very well. When her dance was over, she
made a deep bow.
There was no applause (鼓掌). Instead, everyone laughed at her.
“I must tell you frankly,” said one of her friends, “you are lumpy and humpy.
You don’t have any talent in dancing. You are, like the rest of us, simply a camel.
You are just an animal. You are not and never will be a ballet danc er!” With these
words, they moved away across the sand, laughing and joking.
“How wrong they are!” said the camel. “I have worked hard. I will be a good
dancer. I will dance and dance just for myself.” That is what she did. It gave her
many years of pleasure.
She practiced hard and made much progress in her dancing skills. Occasionally,
the camel was chosen to perform at an animal party before her old friends. The camel
was lucky because she knew exactly what she wanted and she never gave up.

A. They thought poorly of it.

69. Which of the following words can best describe the camel?
A. Crazy.
B. Confident.
C. Proud.
D. Unlucky.
70. What can we learn from the story?
A. Choose a job you are good at.
B. Dance for the pleasure of others.
C. Success results from hard work.
D. Dancing needs more practice.
第II 卷(非选择题共45分)
五、任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在文后第1至第10小题的空格里填上适当的单词。
注意:每空1个单词。
Things adults should learn from kids
Children can teach adults a lot. In other words, there are many things adults can learn from children. For example, kids tend to show love. Every action they do for parents, friends, pets, and people they like, is filled with love. They don’t think twice before loving, and they just love. So adults can learn this: the best way to receive love is to first give it. Unfortunately, most of us have developed the habit of questioning everything. We often try too hard with love, and associate it with weakness. Actually, the only way to experience love is to have minimal expectations, and love your dear ones unconditionally.
Kids never hide emotions. They cry when they hurt themselves, and express displeasure when things don’t go their way. On the contrary, we adults always try to hide our feelings, and never express ourselves sincerely. We often feel happy for others with negative thoughts in our hearts. Crying or expressing oneself is what normal people do. Never hold back tears or happiness. If you want to cry, cry your eyes out, and if you are happy or pleased about something, don’t be afraid to show or share it.
Kids are curious little beings, who always try to understand their surroundings by completely involving themselves in every task they undertake. They have a huge appetite for knowledge, and ask lots of questions every day. This curious nature guides their life, and often leads them to simple yet brilliant discoveries. Are adults as curious as kids? Well, most of us aren’t. Also, they no longer have the thirst for knowledge, and don’t even ask questions if they don’t understa nd something. Adults often forget that it isn’t talent or skill but our curiosity and a huge appetite for knowledge that makes us worthy.
Kids live in the present, and give 100% to any task they are doing. They never worry about the future, and since they are so busy enjoying their present, life is great today. However, with a job, money, and relationships, it does get hard for an adult to enjoy life. The best thing to do here is to change oneself, and if that isn’t
possible, we can live like a child. Just don’t bother about the future, because it isn’t in your control. The only thing you can control is your present, so work hard toward it.
As kids treat everyone equally, they make friends soon and also play a lot with them. Through playing, they make a lot of astonishing discoveries about their friends and surroundings. They also learn a lot about life, because they are out in the open and are playing with all their hearts. So how long has it been since you played outdoors for fun as an adult? Not some serious sporting event or activity, just kicking a ball, running in the park, or any other silly game! Playing doesn’t mean that you have to achieve a purpose. Sometimes, it is healthy to just have some fun.

One possible version:
As is vividly shown in the cartoon, modern life has been dominated by computers. Whether a person is working, studying or playing, he is always staying in front of
a computer. Even when he sleeps, what is in his dream is still the computer.
The reasons why modern people are tied up with computers are as follows. On the
one hand, there is no denying that the computer is currently the most efficient tool
to meet the needs of their work or to entertain themselves. But on the other hand, many people admit that they are too much addicted to computers to maintain
face-to-face contact with their friends and colleagues.
Hence, it’s necessary for us to use computers in a reasonable way. After all, the computer is invented to connect you and me, and to bring conveniences to our life rather than set a barrier to keep people beyond reach. (150词)
