Paper--More than Meets the Eye(纸——超越视觉)
A) We are surrounded by so much paper and card that it is easy to forget just how complex it is(我们周围有那么多的纸和卡片,很容易忘记它是多么复杂). There are ma
ny varieties and grades of paper materials(有很多品种和等级的纸张材料), and whilst(同时;时时,有时) it is fairly( 相当地;公平地;简直) easy to spot the varieties, it is far more difficult to(它…..是困难
得多) spot the grades(虽然它是相当容易的发现品种,更很难发现等级).
B) It needs to be understood that most paper and card is manufactured for a specific purpose, so that whilst the corn-flake(玉米片) packet may look smart, it is clearly not something destined for(发给; 注定会) the archives( ['a:kaivz] 档案). It is made to look good, but only needs a limited life span( 跨度;范围). It is also much cheaper to manufacture(产品:;制造) than high grade card.
C) Paper can be made from an almost endless variety of cellulose-based(基于纤维素) material which will include many woods, cottons and grasses or which papyrus( [p?'pa?r?s]n. 纸莎草;纸莎草纸) is an example and from where we get the word "paper". Many of these are
very specialized, but the preponderance(n. 优势;多数;占优势) of paper making has been from soft wood and cotton or rags( 破布;抹布), with the bulk(大部分) being wood-based(木质的).
Paper from Wood
?D) In order to make wood into paper it needs to be broken down into fine strands(细线). Firstly by powerful
machinery(n. 机械;机器) and then boiled with strong alkalies(n. 碱金属,碱性液) such as caustic soda(氢氧化钠), until a fine pulp( 纸浆;果肉) of cellulose fibers(纤维素纤维) is produced. It is from this pulp that the final product is made, relying on the bonding(粘合) together of the cellulose(n. 纤维素) into layers(层,层次;膜). That, in a very small nutshell(坚果的外壳;小的东西,小容器), is the essence(n. 本质,实质;精华) of paper making from wood. However, the reality is rather more complicated. In order to give us our white paper and card, the makers will add bleach(n. 漂白剂) and other materials such as china clay(陶土,瓷土) and additional chemicals.E)
A further problem with wood is that it contains a material that is
not cellulose. Something called lignin(木质素). This is essential(基
本的;必要的;本质的) for the tree since it holds the cellulose
fibres together, but if it is incorporated(合并;包含) into the manufactured paper it presents archivists with a problem(它提出了档案的问题). Lignin eventually breaks down(分解;发生故障;失败) and releases acid products into the paper. This will weaken the bond between the cellulose fibers and the paper will become brittle(易碎的,脆弱的;易生气的) and look rather brown(棕色的) and careworn(忧心忡忡的;饱经忧患的;疲倦的). We have all seen this in old newspapers and
cheap paperback books. It has been estimated that(据估计) most paper back books will have a life of not greater than fifty years. Not
what(而不是…什么) we need for our archives.F) Since the lignin can
be removed from the paper pulp during manufacture, the obvious question is "why is it left in the paper?" The answer lies in the
fact that lignin makes up a considerable( 相当大的;重要的,值得考虑的) part of the tree. By leaving the lignin in the pulp a papermaker can increase his paper yield(产量;收益) from a tree to some 95%. Removing it means a yield of only 35%. It is clearly uneconomic to remove the lignin for many paper and card applications(卡应用).
G) It also means, of course, that lignin-free paper is going to be more expensive, but that is nevertheless(conj. 然而,不过) what the archivist must look for in his supplies. There is no point
whatsoever( 无论什么) in carefully placing our valuable artifacts in paper or card that is going to hasten( 加速;催促) their demise(加速
自己的灭亡). Acid is particularly harmful to photographic(摄影的) materials, causing them to fade and is some cases simply vanish(使不见,使消失)!
H) So, how do we tell a piece of suitable paper or card from one that is unsuitable? You cannot do it by simply looking, and rather disappointingly(而令人失望的是), you cannot always rely on the
label(标签;商标). "Acid-free" might be true
inasmuch(adv. 因…的原因) as a test on the paper may indicate that it is a neutral material(中性的材料) at this time. But lignin can take years before it starts the inevitable process of breaking down(不可避免的分解的过程), and in the right conditions(正确的条件) it will speed up enormously(巨大地,庞大地;非常地).
I) Added to this, as I have indicated earlier(我之前已经表示), paper may also contain other materials added(补充) during manufacture such as bleach(漂白剂), china clay, chemical whiteners(增白剂;漂白剂) and size(化学美白产品和规模). This looks like a bleak(黯淡的,无希望的) picture, and it would be but for the fact that there are suppliers who will guarantee the material that they sell. If you want to be absolutely sure that you are storing in, or printing on, the correct material then this is probably the only way(正确的材料,那么这可能是唯一的方法).
J) Incidentally( 顺便;偶然地), acids can migrate from material to material. Lining old shoe boxes(李宁旧鞋盒) with good quality acid-
free paper(无酸纸) will do little to guard the contents(不保护的内容). The acid will get there in the end(酸最终会到达那里).。
