In order to know a foreign language thoroughly (完全地), four things are necessary. First, we must understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, correctly with confidence and without hesitation (犹豫). Thirdly, we must read in the language as much as possible. Besides, we must be able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar.
There is no short way to succeed in language learning. A good memory (记忆) is a great help, but it is not enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book. It is no much use learning by heart long lists of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary, and so on. We must learn by using the language. If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. We must “learn_through_use〞. Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever we can.
41.The most important things to learn a foreign language are ________.
A. understanding and speaking
B. hearing, speaking, reading and writing
C. writing and understanding

Jolin Tsai, a famous singer, has become an English teacher! But she is not staying in a classroom to give you talks in English. Instead, she has published (HY) a new book, “Jolin's English Diary Book〞. It came out in Taiwan in March. Jolin is helping you learn English in a lighthearted way and giving you useful words for life outside your textbooks.
“I hope it's a happy English book,〞she said. “When you learn English in a fun way, you will keep on doing it.〞 This certainly doesn't mean just reciting (背诵) words. Jolin has a lot of clever ways of learning. She likes to listen to English songs or find friends to talk to in English. She has been good at English since Grade 3 in primary school. Because of this, she hosted news programme on the radio herself.
Jolin knows it's important to put English to good use. So, in her English diaries, she wrote something about her everyday life, like study, fashion, travel and family. After each diary, she gives you lots of notes. You can use them often, too! Jolin also asks you to keep diaries like hers.

Think for a moment about the teachers you have had at school. Which one did you like most? And why? Were the teachers you liked most also the ones who were the best teachers in your opinion? Before you read further, consider for a minute the qualities that make a teacher outstanding (出色的).
Some very common answers to this question are that teachers need to love their students, that they need to have an expert knowledge of their subjects, and that they should devote themselves completely to their jobs. All of these ideas are, of course, true to a certain extent (在一定程度上) but they are perhaps a little too simple.
It is impossible for anyone to love everyone he knows, and teachers deal with a very large number of students over the years. On the other hand, teachers should certainly be able to make their students feel that they are interested in them and pay attention to the development of both their brains and their characters. A deep knowledge is the ability to pass that knowledge on to the students effectively—a teacher needs to be trained in the skills of teaching. These skills include how to control a class, and so on.Finally, teachers have to devote a lot of time and energy
to their work, of course. However, as models, they should set a good example for their students to follow, so it is important that they should be wellbalanced people with interests outside their school work, friends, hobbies, etc. A teacher who only lives for work is likely to beco me too narrowminded (狭隘的).
49.The author thinks it impossible for a teacher to ________.

A. who devotes all his time and energy to his work

D. who has interests neither in nor outside his work

I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court.
After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and
determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I'd have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.
But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another.Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215.
My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met.But after that he avoided seeing me at all.He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him.And he made me pay him $770.
