Why is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys?
The answer depends largely on cultural values as well as personal experiences. To the Egyptians, green was a color that represented the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims, it means heaven. Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. In China, children are given money in a red envelope to bring good fortune in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs. Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect themselves against evils(灾祸).
People’s choice of colors is also influenced by their bodies’ reactions toward them. Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally (精神上)and physically. People who work in green environment have been found to have fewer stomachaches.
Red can cause a person’s blood pressure to rise and increase people’s appetites(食欲). Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. Similarly, many commercial(商业的)websites will have a red “Buy Now” button because red is a color that easily catches a person’s eye.
Blue is another calming color. Unlike red, blue can cause people to lose appetite. So if you want to eat less, some suggest that eating from blue plates can help.
The next time you are deciding on what to wear or what color to decorate your room, think about the color carefully.
51.Muslims regard green as a symbol of heaven mainly because of their ________.
A.personal experiences B.commercial purposes
C.cultural values D.physical reactions to the color
52.Why will many commercial websites have a red “Buy Now” button?
A.To relax people physically. B.To encourage people to buy goods.
C.To increase people’s appetites.D.To cause a person’s blood pressure to rise.
53.What color might help lose weight according to the text?
A.Red B.Green. C.Blue. D.Purple.
54.Which of the following would be the most proper title for the text?
A.The Meaning and Function of Color B.The Cultural Meaning of Color

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star”or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one’s future development.
55.What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A.People remember well what they learned in childhood.
B.Children have a better memory than grown-ups.
C.Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
D.Stories for children are easy to remember.
56.The author explains the law of overlearning by_________.
A.presenting research finding B.setting down general rules
C.making a comparison D.using examples
57.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The multiplication tables. B.Commonly accepted rules.
C.Things easily forgotten. D.School subjects.
58.What is the author’s opinion on cramming?
A.It leads to failure in college exams. B.It’s possible to result in poor memory.
C.It’s helpful only in a limited way.D.It increases students’ learning interest.

What makes a gift special? Is it the price you see on the gift receipt? Or is it the look on the recipient’s face when they receive it that determines the true value? What gift is worth the most?
This Christmas I was debating what to give my father. My dad is a hard person to buy for because he never wants anything. I pulled out my phone to read a text message from my mom saying that we were leaving for Christmas shopping for him when I came across a message on my phone that I had locked. The message was from my father. My eyes fell on a photo of a flower taken in Wyoming, and underneath a poem by William Blake. The flower, alone dandelion (蒲公英)standing against the bright blue sky, inspired me. My dad had been reciting those words to me since I was a kid. That may even be the reason why I love writing. I decided that those words would be my gift to my father.
I called back. I told my mom to go without me and that I already created my gift. I sent the photo of the cream-colored flower to my computer and typed the poem on top of it. As I was arranging the details another poem came to mind. The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe; my dad recited it as much as he did the other. I typed that out as well and searched online for a background to the words of it. The poem was focused around dreaming, and after searching I
found the perfect picture. The image was painted with blues and greens and purples, twisting together to create the theme and wonder of a dream. As I watched both passing through the printer, the white paper coloring with words that shaped my childhood, I felt that this was a gift that my father would truly appreciate.
Christmas soon arrived. The minute I saw the look on my dad’s face as he unwrapped those swirling (旋涡纹状的)black letters carefully placed in a cheap frame(框架), I knew I had given the perfect gift.
59.The idea for a special gift began to form when the author was ______.
A.reading a message B.having a debate
C.doing shopping D.leaving for Wyoming
60.The author’s inspiration for the gift came from _______.
A.a photo of a flower B.a story about a kid
C.a call from the mother D.a text about Christmas
61.The author made the gift by _______.
A.searching for the poems online B.matching the words with pictures
C.painting the letters in three colors D.drawing the background by hand
62.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To show how to design images for gifts.
B.To suggest making gifts from one’s heart.
C.To explain how computers help create gifts.
D.To describe the gifts the author has received.
D

Like human beings, dogs may catch cold because of cold weather, wet conditions or can also get it from other sick dogs. If a dog has a running nose and watery eyes, coughs or sneezes (打喷嚏), then it is quite probable that the dog has caught cold.
A dog's cold can get over after a few days without treatment but it
totally depends upon the owner to treat it with medications or improve
its immune power (免疫力)to get rid of the cold naturally. Following
are some of the things you can do if your dog gets a cold.
You can improve its immune power by giving it proper nutrient
diet. Healthy food can really do wonders. Try to give it food which is either suggested by the vet(兽医)or is healthy for your pet. Increase the intake of food which is rich in vitamins A, C and E.
Keep your dog warm. The best place for your dog in winter is inside your house. Do not keep your dog outside when it is cold and wet. At home you can also keep the dog warm with the help of carpets. This will make him comfortable and help him to recover fast.
Increase the fluid(流质)intake as it helps a lot. Water can be the best choice but you can also add broth (肉汤)in water which will give your dog strength. Warm water will make your dog more comfortable and will also keep the dog away from the respiratory infections(呼吸道感染).
Steam treatment is considered to be effective in getting rid of cold. It makes the nasal(鼻的)passage wet, which helps proper breathing. Just fill your bathroom with steam and leave your dog inside the bathroom for 15 minutes. Do it nearly 2 to 3 times a day and you will see your dog recovering.
These are some of the things you can do to help your dog recover from cold. However, if you are not able to find any improvement in its health, then turn to the vet for help immediately. Take your dog for regular checkups so as to avoid complications(并发症).
67.From the first paragraph we know about __________.
A.causes and symptoms(症状)of cold in dogs
B.characteristics of sick dogs
C.the similarities between dogs and human beings
D.the difficulty in keeping a dog as a pet
68.When your dog catches cold, you should feed it on _______.
A.its favorite food B.the suggested food by the vet
C.some meat and water D.food rich in vitamin B
69.When a dog catches cold, it is wrong to ________.
A.keep it inside during cold and wet weather B.let it eat too much solid food
C.leave it inside the bathroom full of steam D.keep it sleeping on rugs at home 70.It can be learnt from the text that _________.
A.a dog’s cold can always disappear naturally
B.it’s quite easy to make a sick dog recover from cold
C.treating a dog’s cold sometimes needs a vet’s help
D.cold in dogs won’t spread between each other.

One possible version:
Nothing succeeds without a Strong Will
Sometimes, in our daily life, the easiest thing might be the most difficult thing, as in the case of some people trying to quit smoking for hundreds of times and still making endless efforts without any hope of success. The reason for their failure is their lack of a strong will.
In our modern world, nothing is simple and straightforward. Something might appear easy at first, but as we proceed on, we will find that it is actually extremely difficult. Therefore, we must take whatever we do seriously and be mentally prepared to make our utmost efforts. When
we come across obstacles and setbacks, we must apply our strong willpower and persevere until we finally succeed.
For us students, in our studies or in our daily life in school, we might also be faced with challenges. But we need to get prepared, right now, to take things seriously, try to strengthen our will, and be ready to pursue our goals through persistence and. I believe it’s the only way we can achieve our success.

M: Wow, your new computer is so nice. Let’s surf some websites on it.
W: Sure, but later. It’s my turn to walk the dog. Just wait for a while.
Text 2
M: What a nice day! It’s so sunny. Not too hot, not too cold.
W: Yes. The weather report is predicting warm sunny skies for the whole weekend.
Text 3
W: What’s this?
M: I don’t know. I just turned it on. I think it’s a movie about Africa. You see? There are some lions…
W: Oh, no. It’s a documentary. Boring.
Text 4
W: Are you listening to music or English study tapes?
M: Well, I’m listening to news by radio.
W: Oh, Bob, you really should make good use of your time to study English.
Text 5
M: We’re going out for dinner after class. Do you want to come, too?
W: Maybe, where are you going?
M: Pizza King. We are all expecting to eat there.
W: Pizza? I love pizza!
Text 6
W: Hey, Robert. Why did you give that homeless guy cash?
M:Well, he looked as if he needed help.
W: But you are always so careful with your money.
M: But I like to help when someone’s in need.
W: I just wonder why the guy doesn’t get a job and make his own living.
M: It’s just not that simple, Susan. Some people have a hard time of it in life.
W: If you give them money, they will just waste it.
M: Life has been good to me, Susan, and I’d like to share some of my luck.
Text 7
M: Honey, you can’t wear that skirt. It’s much too short! What will your classmates think?
W: You don’t understand fashion. It’s what everyone is wearing. Besides, I think it is pleasant to look at.
M: It doesn’t suit ordinary people like us. Your mum is sure to say that the skirt is far too short.
W: But it’s really in high fashion;everyone is wearing clothes like this in my school.
M: Not everyone. Your friend Amy would never wear a skirt like that!
W: Look at the photo. It was taken yesterday at the gate of our school. Amy’s skirt is the same as mine.
M: My god, I give up.
Text 8
M: Well, I’m all ready to go. I hope you’ll come to visit me if you have time.
W: I’ll try! Good luck with everything. I’m sure you’ll be a great English teacher.
M: Thanks. I’ll do my best. I’m really looking forward to the new job, and to learning about Chinese culture. The college I’ll work in is a language university, so I think I will make friends from all over the world, the Chinese the Koreans, the Australians. I’m really excited about that.
W: That’s so great! Well, have you thought about how to spend this Christmas?
M: Yes. I want to have a party to let the new friends and students experience our culture. I’d like the students to make a play based on the story of Christmas and sing some Christmas songs.
W: It’s so fantastic! Remember to improve your Chinese. Anyway, practice makes perfect.
Text 9
M: Hey, Jane. I went to see the head teacher and he said it’s OK for us to form a club.
W: Oh, really?
M: Yes. Firstly, we need to decide on the name of the club. Um.. What about “First Club”? Or “Super Film Club”.
W: I think “Our Super Film Club” sounds better.
M: OK. What about the main aim of the club?
W: I’m afraid the lower grade students won’t be interested in our activities. I think we should only aim our efforts on students from Grade 4 to Grade 7.
M: Oh, and don’t forget that Grade 5 and Grade 7 students are not allowed to join any school clubs because of the public exams.
W: Yes. Next let’s decide what kind of activities we want to do.
M: Um… I think we should organize film shows after school and organize visits to film studios on some weekends.
W: That’s great.
Text 10
M: Good morning, boys and girls. In past years, our school held many competitions successfully, like Singing Competition, Reading Competition, Dancing Competition, etc. I do know most of the students will want to have a reading competition as was held last year. But, now we’ll have something funnier. It’s the Pet’s Competition! Well, in fact, it aims at letting students know the importance of loving animals. Nowadays, too many people can’t treat animals well. Some people do not think carefully before getting a pet. You will not be disappointed because our teachers will not be using dull theory to put a love of animals in us. Instead, we can all learn something from a relaxing environment. The competition will be based on the dogs’ability. Unfortunately this competition is not open to our pets this year. Our school has selected five dogs for this competition. That means, we can just sit back and enjoy. So please come to join this event and keep your diary during the activity. How can you afford to miss such an educational and funny event of the year?。
